Questions for the Evaluation of the Synopsis - Final Draft Explain the:

world - My film is based around a birthday house party in a middle class area in a detached house, in a small village. character - The main character is a turning 17 year old closet homosexual boy with a boyfriend and loud minority of homophobic friends. problem - The main characters boyfriend is attending the party and is openly homosexual, which the homophobic friends despise.

Does the story encompass a single moment/event? Describe it. The story encompasses the event of the main characters 18th birthday. The most successful shorts are those that deal with a single event (unity of action), take place in one location (unity of place) and happen within an unbroken continuum of time (unity of time). How far does your story conform to the unity of time, place and action? The unity of time takes place all within the afternoon of the main characters 18th birthday. The unity of place is within the main characters house. The action is the party and the homophobic hate that happens during that party. From whose POV is the story told? Is this clear? How? The story is told from the point of view of the homosexual boy of whose party it is. This is clear as in the beginning we are taken into his psychological domain. Explain what motivates your protagonist. My protagonist is motivated by the feeling of wanting to be accepted and needing to be free with his sexuality. Is the main problem the heart of the film? Explain. The main problem is the heart of the film. The problem is the fact that the main protagonist is a homosexual, with a boyfriend and wants it to be out in the open. Not for him to be treated any differently, but just as one would know a persons gender or age. Unfortunately a loud minority of his friends are homophobic. He also needs to learn to treat his boyfriend with more consideration, integrity and respect. How successfully have you set up a predicament for your main character which presents them with a choice between two equally difficult paths (the dilemma)? The predicament has been set up in a way where the character must choose between acceptance from his friends and betraying his boyfriend or protecting his boyfriend and face the ridicule from his friends.

Is there a sense of internal or external conflict for your protagonist (often emanating from the predicament) and is it credibly developed? Internal conflict - The decisions his needs to make based on his sexuality, his boyfriend and his friends. External conflict - There is a conflict between his friends and his boyfriend. Based on sexuality. What use is being made of:

familiar settings - House parties familiar rituals - 18th Birthday

Are the stakes high enough? Explain. Homophobia is still prevalent in certain areas in todays world, but its not morally tenable or acceptable in a modern 21st century society. The stakes are based on what the protagonist would rather have, his friends or his boyfriend. For the purpose of empathy, this can be seen exactly as if a boy was dating a girl that his friends hated, but his friends didnt know they were dating. Is there at least one clear meaning that the audience can take away? What is it? That they should take the time to see someone for who they are rather than possible stereotypical misconceptions associated with the person. Be it sexuality, race, gender or region identity. Also, someones sexuality, if they are not harming others, is not a crime. Its totally the choice of the individual. Is the film achievable on a zero budget? The film is completely achievable on a zero budget. The locations are free, I already own or have access to equipment and the situation (ritual) is an extremely well known and can be recreated with ease.
