Remembering Melbourne Lee Clark

Oroville, California Mel Clark passed away on August 10, 2012 peacefully at home, he was 91. Born on December 23. 1920 in Selma, CA. His parents were Charles Howell Clark and Dr. Mary Nelson Clark. He was a resident of Oroville for the last thirty years. Mels family moved to southern California when he was six years old. He ran track for Covina High School and graduated in 1939 and also attended Mt. Sac College. He was a navigator for the United States Navy Air Corp during WWII and was stationed in Kodak, Alaska during the Korean War. Mel worked in Law Enforcement for the Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department for twenty ve years. He also worked for the University of Southern California for fteen years. Mel was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bladwin Park #660, Pasadena Scottish Rite, Oroville Masonic Lodge and Ben Ali Shriners in Sacramento. He had many hobbies: gardening, working with his hands, doing woodwork and especially doing stain glass windows and lamps. He loved shing and boating. Mel is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Fran. His two daughters Vickie Varing (Jim) of Westlake Village, CA; Connie Fletcher (Gary) of Crescent City, CA. Grandchildren Ty Varing (Katie) of Santa Barbara, CA; Kimberly Hastings (John) of Stanford, CT; Eric Fletcher of Crescent City, CA; Aaron Emmerson (deceased). In memory of Mel donations may be made to: Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA, 95817 His smile and sense of humor will be missed by all.

World-renowned trumpet player Bobby Shew has performed in the big band groups of Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich and Tommy Dorsey, among others. He has also backed up a whos who of pop stars, including Elvis yes that Elvis. His solo CD work has garnered a Grammy nomination and also a Jazz Album of The Year award. He has also played on soundtracks of major motion pictures, including Grease (I and II), and Rocky (I and II). Rarely does a trumpet player of this magnitude make it to Chico. His performance with the Jazz X-Press on October 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre will be a must see, according to Rocky Winslow, Director of Jazz Studies at CSU, Chico. Having Bobby here will be like having Yoda on campus -- he will leave an everlasting, thought-provoking impression on our students and all else who take advantage of his performance, master classes and workshops. Winslow said much of the program for the Saturday night performance was still up in the air and wouldnt be finalized until Shew and the Jazz X-Press rehearse together a few days before the concert. Works being considered, though, are Thad Jones Zec, Shews Breakfast Wine and Tom Harrells Terrestris, among many others. The Jazz X-Press has established a consistent pattern of top-notch, well received performances, said Winslow. Our guest Bobby Shew is a trumpet and jazz legend. He displays such a unique and personal style, a pure pleasure to experience. The musical combination of the Jazz X-Press and Bobby Shew will be one not to miss. Opening up the concert aptly titled, Shew In, Groove Out -- will be the Chico High School Jazz Ensemble conducted by Todd Filpula. Have I a lot to tell you this month! My mom and dad left me with Alex and Kathi for a weektook me over there at 4 am! Huh! Just climbed back into my bed and went to sleep. Too early for me! Anyway when I awoke, all was good. Alex and Kathi were taking care of me. Then on the next night, moms friend, Carol, came by. She got the keys to our house, but didnt take me with her. What!? Didnt see her for four days. While I was visiting with Alex and Kathi, they had friends over for dinner. Two of the friends bought their dogs. One I already know, nice little thing called Partee. But the other one! Huh, an Alpha, if I ever met one. She kept trying to hump us. Doesnt she know that is a male thing, not for females? Well, we had to keep shaking her off. Finally Partee ran under the coffee table to get rid of her, and I took my head and sent her flying. But it didnt slow her down! Anyway, we survived her. On Friday Carol came back and took me home! Great, now I can spend days in Dads chair, not having to worry about Dad using it. Carol sat on the sofa. I also have my dog door; so I can go out whenever I want. It is hot and muggy here this time of year. Carol takes me for a walk every morning. I like her, because she lets me roam on my leash. Unlike Paulette who makes me walk next to her. I HATE that! Evenings are nice, we have dinner, and she always gives me something different to eat. We take rides in the golf cart each day to get the mail. The first night I went to my room to sleep, but the next night, I figured if I didnt go maybe she wouldnt make me. I was right, for the next 10 days, I slept in Dads chair at night. Nice and comfy. Boy, when they return they are not gonna like this! But, I like it just fine. The days are going by fast, just bee bopping around the house. Miss running at night with my Mom on the golf course, but Carol is very nice to spend time with. She goes out during the day for an hour or two, but we spend the evenings watching TV in the cool, air conditioned house! Finally Carole put me in Dads car, and we were off somewhere at night. Not sure where. We stopped in a lot near the airport, and finally a phone call came, and Carol took off. Whoa, my mom and dad were standing on the curb! I was so excited to see them. My mom hugged me, and I kissed her, and Dad, well he was so happy to see me. I sat on his lap all the way home and just let him hug me. I kissed him, too! Looks like things will be getting back to normal. Night came, and Mom said time to go nite nite, Louis. I just looked at her with my big, brown eyes and hoped she didnt mean it. But as luck would have it, she picked me up and took me to my room! Drat, same old routine again. But I am glad they are back; the house was lonely without them.
