Outline for Action Research Proposal

Focus area of interest

Supporting ESL learners in the mainstream classroom to produce more language use through processed drama activities The focus of this research is to know how does process drama develops the capacity of the participated students (ESL learners) to use more English Language during the activity. My interest is on the application of Process Drama in Second Language learners classroom in developing their speaking skills. My focus area- interest is the fluency of the learners in using the target language. This action research will experiment the teaching strategy, skills and talent in using process drama as a tool to support 4 ESL learners to produce more language use in Ironside State School. This action research aims to find out the power of process drama in encouraging students to produce more language during activity. The production of the language hence will help in the language development of the ESL learners. The action research will be conducted in a session for 30 minutes. The learners will be set into a group and a drama teaching on an issue will be conducted. I will facilitate the learning and encourage more interaction during the activity by giving some stimulus. To carry out the research, I will conduct a drama activity on an issue that they have experienced. This will ensure that they will be able to interact to each other with the experiential knowledge that they have acquired. The learners will talk about My first day at school in Australia. However, I will stimulate their interest in the topic earlier by acting as one of the students in the school who welcomes them. The example dialogue would be: Hello how are you? Are you a new student in this school? My name is Suzanna, Can I know your name? Do you like this school? Through the stimulus by the facilitator, the other students will respond and start using the target language in interaction.

Prompt question: what do you want to find out?

First planned action: what I will do: what the learners will do

What will I need to help me? (resources, materials, input) How will I know if it has been effective?

A video camera to record the interaction that takes place. This will determine the effectiveness of Drama process technique in developing the capacity of language use in the students. Some props such as books, pencils, bag, or ball. The data will be an observational data. This data will be based on my observation. The effectiveness of the activity will be determined on how much the students use the target language to address the issue in an authentic way. This can be detected when they are carrying out the activity. In stage two, some modification will be done to further see the effectiveness of the technique to the second language learners.
