The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, because the Lord has anointed us to proclaim: Ecce Agnus Dei - Behold the Lamb of God; Behold the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Inspired by Luke 4:18 & John 1:29
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you. (Jeremiah 1:5a-b)
This is a powerful account of how precious human life is, the life of each baby who is conceived and how ardently we need to work for the same passion for each child God gives us, as have Mary and Mark Cisilino, two of our parishioners. Julia was baptized in the hospital on July 22, 1999 by Fr. Tom Cargo who was at St. Marys Parish at the time. From then on it was faith and prayers that got us through the roller coaster ride of hospitalization. She became weak and ill after birth and her weight dropped below one pound for a while. They told us she probably would not live. They told us the extremely delicate blood vessels in her brain could burst at any moment leaving her brain damaged. Her greatest struggle was breathing. Her oxygen levels would fall because her lungs could not absorb enough oxygen. So they would give her more oxygen. The more oxygen they gave her, the more it would damage her lungs thereby decreasing their efficiency to absorb more oxygen. It was the epitome of a vicious cycle. They told us she would most likely have asthma and breathing problems. They told us she probably would have learning disabilities. At one point they told us she would be completely blind and I will never forget the day they called and said we better come in right away because she probably wasnt going to make it. In the end she stayed in the hospital for almost four months coming home right about the same time as her due date. When Julia was born at twenty-four weeks, the top of her head to the bottom of her torso would fit in your hand with just her little legs dangling down. She was perfectly formed and had all her parts like other little babies, just tinier. At birth her eyes were still fused shut but opened a week or so later and were a beautiful blue. We watched her eye lashes come in and listened to her little cries grow stronger. During the last month she was in the hospital she began to noticeably grow and put on weight. She was not allowed to leave the hospital until she was five pounds. When she was finally sent home she had reached what seemed to us a whopping five and half pounds.
Page 2
Her hospital bed was covered with prayer cards, St. Julia medals, and crayon pictures from her big brother and sister. I even smuggled in a very old vial of holy water from Lourdes, which I am sure was against hospital regulations, and blessed her myself. She was the recipient of hundreds of prayers and abundant love. To us she was beautiful and perfect and we could not have loved her more. Driving back and forth to the hospital for two hours a day for four months gave us a lot of time for thought and prayer. We usually had talk radio on during the drive and would often hear the news. At that time, there was coincidentally a news story of a girl who was fighting the courts for the right to have a late-term abortion at twenty-eight weeks. That was a full month after Julias gestational age. I would listen to the news story then go into the hospital and hold Julias little hand and think there is no possible way that girl could know what was inside of her. It was a fully formed child, a child she would literally have to kill to abort the pregnancy. If the baby was taken out during an abortion, he would most likely live and very likely be healthy. I would pray for Julia and I would pray for that little baby. I do not know the fate of that baby but I do know Julia is beautiful and healthy today with extremely little residual damage. I know we made the right decision. We did not know what would happen. We were told to expect the worst and all we knew is that we trusted God to get us through and if there was something wrong, we would love her just as much. - - - - Mary Cisilino - - - parishioner I remember full well the baptism of little Julia. It is the experience that most impacted my first two years in the Diocese of Joliet when I was stationed at St. Marys. It impacted me so deeply that I have preached on it numerous times as to how awestruck I was of the fragileness, beauty and sanctity of life. I remember vividly going to Childrens Hospital. I remember tiny Julia, smaller than my hand, having a tiny-tiny little white baptism cloth-gown laid over her as with a tiny medicine cup of water I poured over her head as I said I baptize you, Julia, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. I remember driving home thinking I would hear within a few days of her passing and would say some prayers over her and with her loving family. Months went on and I did not hear and busy work kept me running, until one Sunday morning a beautiful young mother flanked by her family walked after mass with one of the most beautiful baby girls with big beautiful blue eyes in her arms. Somehow the sight was familiar but I was unsure until Mary said that this was little Julia who I had baptized not so long ago. It took my breath away. Julia and her mother and her family took my breath away. God took my breath away. A bit under 12 years had passed and last summer I arrived at St. Johns as your new pastor. My very first Sunday, from the back of church came a young husband and father who pulled me toward his dear family and again this family and God took my breath away. There she was almost 12, growing and beautiful like her mother and sister and joined with her two brothers. All of them are precious, all of them are gifts from God. All babies who are conceived should have the same passion rooting for them to live and to grow in grace as do the Cisilino children from their parents. - - - - Fr. Tom

- - - - Padre Toms

World Mission Sunday 2012October 20th and 21st ONE SUNDAY FOR THE WHOLE WORLD
Next Sunday, Pope Benedict XVI calls every Catholic in the world to celebrate our vocation to be missionary. Its World Mission Sunday! As Catholics around the world here at home and in the Missions gather at the Eucharist around the table of the Lord, we are to pray for the Churchs worldwide missionary work. We pray for those awaiting the Good News of our Lords great love for us and for the missionaries who offer the poor and suffering the light of Christ. And we are to offer financial help through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith for more than 1,150 dioceses in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands. MISSIONARIES OF FAITH Today is World Mission Sunday. We are called to this Eucharistic celebration along with Catholics in every parish, chapel and church throughout the world to fulfill the call we first heard at Baptism, the call to be missionaries, to share our faith. On World Mission Sunday, we are called in a special way to be missionaries of faith through prayer and participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection. Let us pray especially at this Mass for all who long to hear the hope-filled, saving message of Jesus, and for the priests, religious and lay catechists in mission countries worldwide who offer them that Good News. WERE ALL MISSIONARIES Do you know the date of your Baptism? Well, on that day, you became a missionary, called by our Lord to share your faith with those around you and to be part of the Churchs mission to the world. We are not all able to travel to foreign lands as St. Francis Xavier did. However, we can all make effort in our daily lives through prayer and sacrifice to support those men and women who are called to leave their homeland and preach the Good News of the Lord in a foreign land. On World Mission Sunday, we have the opportunity to be part of the Churchs missionary work in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands through our prayers and generous help offered to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Just as our young church here in the United States received support in the 19th century from the Catholics of Europe through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, so too the growing churches in the Developing World today also require financial help. Your generosity will help make a faith-filled difference around the world! * A gift of $15 is a weeks support of a young man in a mission seminary. * A gift of $25 is a months help for the formation of a religious Sister in the Pacific Islands. * A gift of $50 helps provide care for one of the 50 children at a home in Zambia. * A gift of $100 covers the cost of a desk and textbook for five of the 300 children in catechism class at a parish on the Galpagos Islands off Ecuador. Next weekend a second Special Collection will be taken for World Mission Sunday. These envelopes are included in your packet. The Special Collection will be taken immediately following our regular offertory collection. Please be as generous as possible.
