its hard to imagine now, but at one time the Palos Verdes Peninsula was completely uninhabited save for a few sheepherders. in the early 1900s, this entire area was a cattle ranch, used for farming. over 2,000 head of cattle roamed the vast and barren land. the remote location and lack of adequate roads prevented any additional development at the time, and with the arrival of the great Depression and world war ii, ideas of future development came to a halt. the area still held promise, though, as a unique location that provided magnificent views, rolling terrain, and a yearround mild climate. the first three Peninsula cities Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling hills, and Rolling hills Estates were incorporated before the largest building boom began in late 1950. the remaining unincorporated areas soon experienced rapid development, and the idea of incorporating a fourth city was first brought up in 1962 as an answer to controlling this unrestrained development. these unincorporated areas fell under the control of Los angeles county, and although the newly-formed Save our coastline group had made some progress toward implementing zoning changes, it soon became apparent that the only way to truly preserve the environment and gain control over rampant development was through the incorporation of a fourth city Rancho Palos Verdes. these days, all of the peninsula cities have committees that regulate building development so that open space and nature can be preserved. the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land conservancy was founded in 1988 with the purpose of preserving open space on the peninsula, and has since successfully preserved more than 1,600 acres of open space. Palos Verdes encompasses so much more than a simple definition of four cities that make up the peninsula and a list of their various differences and similarities. From Pointe Vicente and the spectacular view of catalina island across the bay, to the historical malaga cove Plaza and charming La Venta inn, there are numerous special spots and areas all over the peninsula. Fantastic surfing spots, secluded coves only accessible by trails, and the luxurious terrenea Resort its all here!

palos Verdes estates, rancho palos Verdes, rolling hills and rolling hills estates are the predominant cities. the area overall is home to golf courses, country clubs, and the beautiful South coast Botanic gardens. on the coast is the location of the former marineland of the pacific which was an aquatic theme park, now occupied by terrenea. Wayfarers chapel and point Vicente lighthouse are on the national register of historic places and point Vicente park is a popular spot for watching the migration of gray whales to and from their breeding lagoon in Baja california.

Palos verdes estates:

consists of 4.8 square miles of land. features the neighborhoods of Valmonte, lunada Bay, malaga cove, montemalaga. incorporated in 1939 the oldest of the four cities on the zpalos Verdes peninsula.

rolling hills:

consists of a single gated community. the city borders rolling hills estates to the north and rancho palos Verdes on all other sides. no traffic lights and large spaces between the homes. horse-friendly, ranch-style home.

ranCho Palos verdes:

consists of 13.5 square miles of land. features the neighborhoods of p.V. drive east, mira catalina, p.V. drive South, West palos Verdes, country club, Silver Spur, la cresta, los Verdes.

rolling hills estates:

the city has a total area of 3.6 square miles. features the neighborhoods of p.V. drive north, palos Verdes peninsula, Silver Spur, peninsula center. over 25 miles of public horse trails. many lots are an acre or more. major surf locale.

With some of the best ocean views in california, los Verdes golf course is considered to be one of the best golf values in the area. tucked above the cliffs in rancho palos Verdes, the course makes putting a huge challenge on nearly every hole because of its proximity to the pacific. not too many public courses have views of catalina like we do, general manager Bob lockhart said. as far as affordable golf in the area, los Verdes is it. this course makes it accessible to the general public and couple that with the views, it is pretty remarkable.
