Festival of Sand... McNeill...
Scottys Contracting & Stones 11th Festival of Sand benefiting Kids on the Block was held on September 14, 2012. Competition began at 10am and ended with the judges declaring winners at 5pm. Cash prizes were awarded with the top prize being $1,000! McNeill Elementary was honored when Olympic Gold Medalist Claire Donahue visited the school. Claire, a former student at WKU, spoke to the students about setting goals and realizing it takes a lot of work to accomplish them. Students presented her with a McNeill Gold Medal as a thank you for her inspirational message.

After the competition there was a Kids on the Block puppet program as well as lots of childrens activities. Kids on the Block is an educational puppet troupe teaching children to accept differences in themselves and others and how to make healthy life choices. They have been providing these programs free to our local schools for the last 27 years! Central Wins Two Events at State Track Meet
Warren Central High School senior Donovan Halsel closed out his high school track and field career May 19 by capturing his third consecutive state championship in the high jump. Halsel, who will compete in track and field at Western Kentucky University, cleared 6 feet-4 inches to take 1st place in the high jump. It was one of two events won by the WCHS team. The Dragon 4-by-100 relay team of Antonio Atkins, Andre Bledsoe, Tyreon Patterson and LaJustin Scgers won that event. The same foursome took 2nd in the 4-by-200 relay. Warren Central, which also got a 3rd place effort from Andreaus Robinson in the shot put, finished 6th in the team standings.

Three Warren Central High School students won 1st place awards in the recent FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) Region 4 STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) Events competition. Warren East Middle...
Students in Mrs. Carinis art class participated in the Country Peddler Design An Ad contest. Several WEMS students won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards. Their ads were on display through the month of January at the Capitol Arts Center upstairs Gallery. A reception took place for the winners and their parents on January 18 at 4:30pm at the Capitol Arts Center. Congratulations to all of these students. 1st place: Conner Hurd, Shelby Chobot, Chelsey Matthews, Maria Leyva, Jordan Turner, Grant Hudnall, Kevin Day, Caleb Wallace, and Grace Davenport. 2nd place: Dakota Embry, Tiren Brook, Eli Sparks, Haley Stillwell, William Simmons, Brooklynn Willis, Gage Fish, and Austin Hymer. 3rd place: Breanna Watt, Grant Turner, Tyler OBrien, Harley Gallaway, Leslie Guess, Shyann Coitrone, and Maddie Elder.

For kids, change can turn into an adventure and help make the future better than the present. For Holy Trinitys 4th and 5th grade class, taught by Ms. Deedy Whittamoore, that belief became a reality last Christmas in their social studies segment about supporting the local economy through purchasing locally-crafted items. Each student was challenged to find Christmas gifts made in Kentucky, and the students became experts at sleuthing out the origin of everyday items. To their dismay, the students usually discovered labels heralding international origins. The class took a field trip to an area attraction where the students perused the area gift shop unsuccessfully for local merchandise. They then embarked on a letter writing campaign to various government officials, including Governor Steve Beshear and President Obama. These bright, believing students caused a ripple with their words. Now, that area attraction has a table piled full of local fare and a sign proudly boasting Made in Kentucky. Ms. Whittamoores class was featured on Bowling Greens local news channels, newspaper, as well as receiving national coverage on ABCs Primetime with Diane Sawyer.

St. Joseph Middle...

House System
The fall of 2007 saw the St. Joseph Middle School (grades 6-8) put the House System into place. This system was adapted from the Harry Potter books and movies. Five years later, the concept is thriving, and House of Cabrini House of Drexel students look forward to it. To begin, the House System specific goals were put into place, which include building the core values of leadership, helping students reach their academic potential, and helping students grow in faith and service to their community, to name only three. In order for the House System to work, the teachers developed a game plan, which includes, for example, having members from all grade levels in each house and having each middle school teacher as a mentor for a house (named for a Saint of the Catholic church who had some impact on the development of the Catholic school system in America). Since its inception, the middle school teachers have used the House of Seton House System to encourage and reward community service projects, school spirit, and Christian behavior. Also, the House System has given the students a sense of community with students of different grade levels.

Richardsville student Zack Hogan is a National Champion in Archery. Hogan recorded a score of 290 (out of a possible 300) at the National Archery Tournament held in May in Louisville and captured 1st place in the Boys 5th Grade Division. Another Richardsville student, Hallie Willis, finished in 12th place in the 6th Grade Girls Division. These students were coached by Richardsville physical education teacher Joe Dan Cline.
