MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF SHOPMOBILITY UK

Shopmobility Stockport means independence for over 1,500 people who use our scooters, wheelchairs and sighted guides to get round Stockport. I have never driven one of those scooters! They are very easy to drive. We will show you how to use one, and once you are confident and competent, we will let you take one out. We may even be able to provide an escort but only for your first outing. If you would rather use a power chair or wheelchair, we have those as well. If you are using a wheelchair, you are responsible for providing your own carer to push you. It will only take a few minutes to show them how to use one. My sight is not good! We have trained sighted guides who can guide you on foot or push you in a wheelchair. What will it cost me? You will need to join. It costs 10 a year or 20 for life membership. After that it is free. There is just a 2 deposit, which you can choose to donate, if you borrow any equipment. I am a member of another Shopmobility scheme. Sorry each scheme is separate. You will need to join us as well.

How do I go about joining? To register as a member, it is advisable to make an appointment as registration can take at least 30 minutes. This includes training and assessment in the use of our equipment. We need two proofs of your ID with your name and address e.g. recent (no more than 3 months) utility bill or bank statement. Or one with your name and address and one photo ID (passport, driving licence or Blue Badge). You do not need to be registered disabled. If you wish to use a scooter or power chair and you have one of the following conditions we will need a letter from your doctor to say that you are fit to use powered equipment: EPILEPSY1 DIABETES controlled by insulin1 FITS OR BLACKOUTS SLEEP DISORDERS MENTAL IMPAIRMENT (e.g. Alzheimers) POOR CONCENTRATION SEVERE WEAKNESS OR TIREDNESS IN THE UPPER LIMBS LEARNING DISABILITIES

However if your doctor is likely to charge for this, we suggest you try out one of our vehicles first to see if they are right for you. When are you open? Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, except on Bank Holidays.

Sight of current driving licence will be accepted.

Where can I find you? Level 2 of Merseyway Car Park. We have our own parking spaces just round the corner but if these are being used, we will bring a scooter or wheelchair to your car. Parking anywhere in the car park is free for Blue Badge holders for up to three hours. But I dont drive or use a taxi!

Can I borrow your equipment overnight? Not if it is a scooter but we can let you have a manual wheelchair for up to 13 weeks. The cost is 3 a day/night or 15 a week, with a deposit of 100. (Reduced rates available for members.) Again we need 2 proofs of your ID with your name and address (or one with your name and address and one photo ID). To make an appointment to register

No problem! We will meet you off the bus or train, or Ring and Ride, if you prefer (see picture on front). Just let us know when you book the scooter (or wheelchair) and we will come and meet you at an agreed time and at a range of handy central locations: the bus station, Mersey Square and Grand Central bus stops, taxi rank, Princes Street, St Petersgate and Sainsburys bus stops, Asda caf, or the railway station. We can also meet you in one of the car parks or a disabled parking spot. Is it just for Stockport town centre? No! You can take our scooters, wheelchairs or guides anywhere in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport as long as you have finished with them by 5.00pm! If you are using a sighted guide for visually impaired people, you can start or finish your journey anywhere in the area but you are responsible for your own transport. And it is subject to the guide being willing and able to undertake the journey you have requested. Some of the guides are volunteers.

Ring us on 0161 666 1100 SATELLITE SERVICE AT STEPPING HILL HOSPITAL FOR VISITORS & OUT-PATIENTS Monday to Friday, 8.30am 4.30pm (subject to the availability of trained volunteers). You will need to show your membership card. If you are not a member you may still use this service under escort by a hospital volunteer. To book, tel 419 5400.
