Name: Ron Gardiner Lesson: Research and blog about bullying using a Voki avatar Introduction: During this

lesson, students will learn about bullying, and what they can do about bullying. They will conduct research from various websites to answer several focusing questions. Students will use a word processing application to write a paragraph or two about what bullying is and how to handle a bullying situation. Students will create a Voki avitar and record their writing assignment to the Voki, then embed the Voki code into their Gaggle Blog page. The bullying blogs will be shared with the class using the Smart Board. Objectives: Students will identify what constitutes bullying, how bullying affects people, and learn how to react to a bullying situation. Common Core Standards: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine atopic and convey ideas and information clearly. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting. Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. Add audio recordings and visual displays to presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes. ISTE NETS for Students 2007: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Relative Advantage: Students learn to, analyze, evaluate and synthesize information acquired digitally, as well as plan and manage activities required to complete a project. Timeline/Learning activities: Day 1: 30 minutes (Introduction of topic with preview of activity) Day 2: 45 minutes (Students research websites, using note sheet to record

information.) Day 3: 1.5 hours (Students draft, revise, and edit their essay using the question sheet as a resource) Day 4: 45 minutes (Students review the procedures to create a Voki avatar, record their paragraph to the Voki, and acquire embed code and paste the code to the Gaggle blog.) Day 5: 1 hour (Students share their Voki with rest of the class) Materials: Computer with digital projector, speakers and, viewing surface. Note taking sheet. Computers with Internet access and word processing application. Gaggle and Voki account access. Grouping strategies: After whole group introduction of lessons, students will work individually. Adaptations: Special needs students may take part in this lesson by using assistive technology (input devices, speech to text software, partnering with a peer or working with their assigned educational aide.
