A Clockwork Orange
Partner Paper WITNESS: _____________________ One of the most important questions that Anthony Burgess asks in A Clockwork Orange is: what is the cause of badness (44). As we finish reading the novel, we will discover Burgesss answer to the question. However, is Burgess correct? In 1962, his American publishers disagreed with Burgesss view and changed the ending of the book to match their views on human naturethat man is inherently evil, and cannot ever go through a TRUE moral transformation. Our version of the novel has the original Burgess endingshowing man is inherently good, and can go through a TRUE moral transformation. To assess whether Burgess is right or wrong, we are going to investigate different views about human nature. This is preparation for your participation in THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY: HUMAN NATURE. Witnesses for the DEFENSE believe Witnesses for the PROSECUTION believe All of humanity is, inherently, evil. The individual isof humanity is, inherently, good. Societys All evil, and thus makes society evil. influences turn good individuals toward evil.
It is your job, with your partner, to find and interview a potential witness at our trial. To find your witness, you may use any resource available: the book or story, biographies in the library or online, and from your teachers and other experts around the school. To interview your witness, you must: 1. Find and copy FIRST HAND information (primary sources) that contain evidence of your witnesss philosophy of human nature. a. Does your witness, in his/her work and ideas, demonstrate a belief that human nature is inherently evil or inherently good? Write an essay (with a clear, argumentative thesis and at least two supporting body paragraphs that relate back to your thesis) explaining how your witness would testify. a. Would he/she take the view that human nature is basically good or basically flawed? That evil originates with the individual, or that evil originates with society?

Paragraphs 2-3. One to Two Body ParagraphsMajor life event(s) and/or proof as to why this character or person would be a great witness for the Defense or the Prosecution. Use at least 2 quotations from your text and/or sources as specific evidence. Paragraph 3 or 4.
