Content Page
Introduction (1 minute): o Hello, my name is Paige. I am a senior in nutrition at UT and I am going to tell you why you should Be in Cahoots with Calcium! Pre-assessment: o For starters, I want to know how much you already know about calcium. So answer these questions on the handouts that you are getting. Remember there is no wrong answer! Content and Sequence o Food sources of Calcium This is MyPlate (show picture of MyPlate). MyPlate tells us that we need to have dairyand these can be any of the foods in the Milk Group (show Milk Group) Which of these foods in the Milk Group are your favorites? The reason these foods are so important is because they give us a mineral called calcium; and calcium is very important for our bodies But there are other foods that provide us with the calcium that we need. (Show calcium-rich foods) Which of these calcium-rich foods are your favorites? Mozzarella Stretch: Mozzarella cheese is part of the Milk Group and is a source of dietary calcium. To make mozzarella, it needs to be stretched and stretched Have you ever noticed when you take a bite of pizza and the cheese stretches on for miles

So we are going to stretch like mozzarella cheese!

Paige Owens Be in Cahoots with Calcium! Demonstrate simple stretches and encourage them to stretch all over!

Milk Shake: Have students stand up with adequate room on either side Whats a fun and delicious way to drink milk? Milkshakes! How do make milkshakes? You shake! Have students jog in place and shake all over for 10 seconds

o Functions of calcium in the body: Do you remember me telling you that calcium is important for our bodies? The reason is because it helps us build strong bones and strong teeth. So if you shake and stretch like you did earlier, and you get a lot of calcium, you are not likely to break your leg. Calcium may reduce getting high blood pressure, which makes it hard for your heart to work, and can lead to heart disease (Have two volunteers each blow through paper towel roll, straw, and coffee stirrer to demonstrate contracting arteries) Ask which was harder to blow through.

Calcium may also reduce some cancers o Serving Size: Getting enough calcium is important. When drinking milk, or eating yogurt you should pay attention to how much you are getting. The correct serving size for a glass of milk is 8 fluid ounces. (Demonstrate by pouring 8oz milk into glass) Play Milk Group Station exercise (see attached)

o Recommended Daily Intake The last thing I am going to talk to you about today is how much calcium you need throughout the entire day.

Paige Owens Be in Cahoots with Calcium! Children over the age of 9 need 3 servings of dairy, or foods that are rich in calcium. However, it is important to know that these foods may not have AS MUCH calcium as dairy products. Foods that give you more than 10% are considered high in calcium. (Show slide show of calcium rich foods with percentages of RDA for calcium. Have students write down how many servings they will need of each food based on percentages.)

Evaluation: In closing, I want to make sure you learned something with me today. Please answer the questions on the new sheets you are getting. See how much you can rememberthere are still no wrong answers!
