Well done to all in Roscommon GAA On a Successful Year Looking Forward to 2013

Teachtaireacht an Cathaoirleach
On behalf of Coiste Contae Ros Comin I take this opportunity to welcome you all to Strokestown for the Junior and Intermediate county finals. Todays finals mark the end of the premier adult football competitions for 2012 we can expect that all four finalists-St Aidans, St Michaels, Michael Glaveys and Oran are determined to capture titles today. The Intermediate final is a highly anticipated north v south clash. St Aidans are hoping for a speedy return to senior ranks while St Michaels will be looking for a chance to play in senior ranks for the first time since 1972. Both teams will be aware of the achievements of last years Intermediate champions Padraig Pearses who contested a closely fought senior final last Sunday and todays winners will look forward to competing in the countys premier competition in 2013. The prize of promotion to senior ranks will be a huge incentive to todays finalist and I wish both clubs every success. Our Junior final is contested by two sole junior clubs and both will be keen to atone for recent final losses. Oran were defeated in the final four years ago while Michael Glaveys were runners up in 2010. Todays finalists are two clubs with a long tradition in the county and victory for either would be a huge boost to morale in their clubs. I look forward to this final as the junior final means so much to the followers of both clubs. As we come to the end of the club season in Roscommon it is a time for reflection. All our clubs face challenges on and off the field. The costs of running a club continue to be a major headache for club officials. Income streams are becoming scarcer while sponsors and donors who were most generous in the past are no longer able to afford financial support. As well as this problem the challenge of the scourge of emigration has returned to haunt our clubs. The GAA community in the county need to examine how best we can face these new challenges and cater for our young people by providing competitions that are geared to meeting the changing financial and demographic situation that clubs in our county now face. A special thanks is due to the Strokestown club for providing their magnificent facilities for todays finals. Strokestown have every reason to be proud of the developments here today and the hosting of two adult finals is for the club a historic occasion. This is not the first occasion that Strokestown has hosted finals. The most recent one was the 1964 senior final while many of the finals in the early years of the Association were played at various venues in Strokestown. I wish both our referees Kevin Naughton and Sean Feeney good luck today and again I wish to express the Boards thanks to all our referees for their work during 2012. A word of praise is due to the referees committee under the chairmanship of Haulie Beirne and referees co-ordinator Peter McHugh for their work during the year in referee education and training. It is very important work and is much appreciated by the Board and clubs. Once again the CCC has completed the senior, intermediate and junior on schedule despite having to face many challenges. Our clubs should realise the deadlines that have to be met to meet the demand of provincial competitions and it is not always possible to accede to requests from clubs concerning fixtures. To all officials, team management, gate collectors and everyone involved with the running of our championships a special thanks for your work. Without the volunteers who give of their time and effort tirelessly during the year the GAA would be a much poorer organisation and your work is greatly appreciated. I wish all our representatives in the provincial competitions every success and I am sure that you all will be worthy representatives of Roscommon clubs on the provincial stage. I again wish all our finalists good luck today and I hope that we have two enjoyable contested by clubs who have a long and proud tradition on the playing fields of Roscommon.

MEET THE MANAGERS & CAPTAINS

MANAGER Eddie Egan Castlerea native Eddie Egan is in his second year as Oran manager. Living in Cloverhill Eddie gained an interest in his adopted club. He was part of the winning All Ireland Under 21 team in 1978 where he played half back & won an Intermediate championship with Castlerea St. Kevins in 1987. He was at the helm last year to see Oran winning the Under 21 Division 2 Final & many of those players have came through to the Junior team today. He has management experience in the past with Castlerea St. Kevins, Tulsk Lord Edwards & Elphin, who he guided to a quarter final replay in 2008 where they lost out narrowly to Clan na nGael. Eddie has his team fine tuned for todays game & the Oran men will be well up for the game. CAPTAIN Mark Gunning Mark is an Agricultural Science student who hails from the Ballinaheglish area of the parish. A tricky & tenacious player Mark is a fine model for the modern half back cutting off supply to the opposition forwards and often travels up the field to kick a score. Mark first claimed silverware in 2001 when he was part of a winning u-12 team & made his way up the grades showing great commitment & was a prominent player on the winning 2008, 2010 & 2011 junior & U-21 teams. He also plays hurling & was a winner of an U-21 All Ireland B Hurling medal this year. The Gunning family have a great interest in GAA & have had links to Oran football down through the years. In 1970s when training facilities were at a minimum, Sonny Gunnings field (Marks grandfather) was the venue where the Oran men of the 70s often perfected their skill. Marks two brothers, Niall & Jack, also play for Oran, with his sister Caroline on the Roscommon Under 14 team this year.

MANAGER Stephen Healy Stephen hails from Charlestown in County Mayo and he is one of the excellent teachers that make up the staff of Gorthaganny National School. Stephen had great success with his own club, Charlestown when he led them to Mayo and Connacht Championship glory in 2001. Stephen has also inter-county experience when he was a selector for the Mayo Minors during Ray Dempseys tenure as manager. Stephen is a shrewd observer of the game and in his few months with Glaveys he has earned the respect of all the lads. He is very thorough in all that he does and training sessions are always well planned in advance. He is a great motivator and along with his selector Ciaran Grogan they hope to ensure that Glaveys will be playing Intermediate championship in 2013. Michael Glaveys would also like to take this opportunity to thank Padraig OMalley, who was involved earlier in the year; Ruairi Comer, who keeps the vital statistics in all the games and their Physio Jennifer Keadin. CAPTAIN Derek Waldron Derek hails from Granlahan, that hotbed of football in Roscommon and one of the three pillars that make up the Michael Glaveys club along with Ballinlough and Cloonfad respectively. Derek is a passionate Glaveys man who wears his heart on his sleeve and has Michael Glaveys blood coursing through his veins. He`s a leader in the true sense of the word and after a injury hit start to the season which saw him miss a good portion of the early league games he resumed full fitness around mid-April and has been consistency personified in the relatively new role of midfield which he has made his own on the back of some stellar performances in both the league and championship. He`s a real motivating force in the dressingroom and puts his body on the line every time he puts on that Glaveys jersey. He`ll be a key presence for Glaveys today in the engine room that is midfield and if spirit and tenacity can carry Glaveys over the line then Derek will be firmly at the wheel and there will be no prouder man in Strokestown today than Derek as he leads his men into battle on the biggest and most important occasion of all county final day.

HISTORY OF ORAN FOOTBALL CLUB

The Oran GAA Football Club was formed between the years of 1890 & 1900 following the establishment of the Association making it one of the oldest clubs in Roscommon. It was initially called Donamon & kept this name right up to the early 1940s when Oran became its official title. During the 1940s the Farragher Monastery also had a football team who eventually joined up with Oran boosting numbers. This mid Roscommon club has a very proud footballing tradition & Oran claimed their first senior title in 1918. The last Junior Title was won in 1973 when, after the initial fixture being cancelled due to logged pitch, a fine bunch of men bridged a 41 year gap defeating Ballinameen by single point Hyde Park. They built on this in 1974 to claim the Intermediate Title & continued to compete well at this level. In 1997 the Intermediate Title came back to Oran again with victory over Ballinameen in Hyde Park. A hat trick secured victory for Oran, final score line 3-9 to 0-9. Ivan Conneely, a panel member today, lined out on that 1997 winning team. Its been 4 years since Oran last featured in a Junior Final, however, have been making progress since then winning the Tansey Cup in 2010 & claiming U-21 titles in 2009 & 2011 & were finalist in 2010. Great work has been done in our Minor Club down through the years to nurture & develop some fine players to compete at adult level with many featuring on county panels & hopefully the threat of emigration will not hinder us as we hope to build for the future. Today we have a mix of youth & experience as we hope to capture just the third Junior Title in the history of the Club. We wish the team & management the very best of luck today & thank all our players, officials, sponsors & supporters who are so important all year long. 2012 Executive Committee: Chairman: Seamus McDermott Secretary: Mark Lawless Treasurer: Martin Finan Registrar: Ronnie Mahon PRO: Deirdre Garvey

MICHAEL GLAVEYS GAA CLUB A BRIEF HISTORY

Serving Ballinlough, Cloonfad, Granlahan and some families from Gorthaganny, Michael Glaveys is seen as one of the Countys traditional clubs despite its rather late formation in 1956. The club was formed in January 1956 in Gorthaganny Hall by Peadar Earley. Our first title was the U-15 County Championship back in 1963. We dominated the Intermediate ranks in the early seventies when we won the league in 1970, 71 and 72 and the Intermediate championship in 70 and 72. Glaveys originally covered a large area taking in two Parishes Loughglynn and Kiltullagh but due to the vast geographical area, the Loughglynn Parish decided to form their own club, Eire g in 1984. The official opening of the Peadar Earley Memorial Park took place on Sunday May 18th 1986. The club won the intermediate championship and league in 1985. They managed to stay in the senior grade for twenty years and they reached their first senior final in 1996 but were beaten by Clan na nGael. The clubs adult team were relegated in 2005 back to the intermediate ranks and then were relegated to junior championship in 2009. We gained promotion to the Division Two League in autumn 2011 and finished in a very credible third place this year. We have had a lot of success with both our under-age girls and boys teams over the last few years so the future for the club is very bright. Famous Players - Over the years some wonderful players have pulled on the Michael Glaveys jersey Kevin Winston, John Lynch, Dermot Earley R.I.P., Gerry Fitzmaurice, Paul Earley, Conor Connelly, Iain Daly, Eugene Coggins, Ciaran Grogan, James Heneghan and in more recent times Cormac Costello, Stuart Daly, Eugene Stritch, Darren & Shane OMalley, Sonny Mc Anulty and Conor Hussey all have represented their club and county proudly. For over fifty years, we have had many wonderful days of success and achievement and many difficult days where we failed at the final hurdle or didnt rise to the first one at all but there is no doubt that Glaveys has been established as a great club on and off the field . I hope that all involved with the club are proud to be part of it and that we can all work together to make it even better in the next few years. 2012 CLUB OFFICERS Chairman Treasurer Insurance Officer Director of Coaching

GAA SOCIAL INITIATIVE

The GAA Social Initiative arose as a result of former President Mary McAleese and her husband, Martin, noticing an absence of older men in attendance at official functions during their many visits to local communities over the years. The President came to the conclusion that many men, because of the changing patterns of life, were falling through cracks in the system and either risking or already experiencing isolation and loneliness. Following further discussions they extended an invitation to the GAA to use it's network to engage older men who were not active in local community life and the pilot programme for the GAA Social Initiative was born. The aim of the initiative is simple: to offer a social outlet that is safe and welcoming and that provides a route into, and a place in, the community. So far, 13 clubs in the county have participated in the programme: St. Brigids, St. Dominics, St. Croans, Tulsk Lord Edwards, Roscommon Gaels, ire g, Michael Glaveys, St. Josephs, St. Michaels, Kilglass Gaels, Padraig Pearses, Boyle and Fuerty. The efforts of all the Clubs are greatly appreciated by those involved and they have given many people a new social outlet. A good example of the Social Initiative in action would be the activities of St Josephs. They began last November by organising a Table Quiz as a fundraiser with about one hundred and fifty people attending. They linked with existing community groups in Kilteevan such as Kilteevan Community Development, Community Alert and Kilteevan Cycling Club and arising from this, a trip to Croke Park Stadium and the Dermot Earley Exhibition at the GAA Museum was undertaken as the first social outing. The group consisted of former club players and officials, representatives from the local community groups and community members and all had a very enjoyable time. While the Social Initiative retains a focus on men in the community, it is not exclusive and clubs are encouraged to vary the type of activity they organise to include in their social programme events to which the entire community can be invited. Social events and activities should also be open to those in the community who are not GAA members, as the example from St. Josephs demonstrates. Further examples of club activities can be seen in the Social Initiative Newsletters which can be viewed at www.gaa.ie/socialinitiative. Roscommon GAA Social Initiative Officer, Sen Mannion, will hold a meeting later this month and all Clubs are encouraged to attend and learn more about the Scheme and how they can get involved. Details will be published in the local media nearer the time or alternatively, you can contact Sen any time on 086 838 8756 or social@gaaroscommon.ie or Colin Regan, the GAA Community & Health Promotion Manager, at colin.regan@gaa.ie

CUMANN LTHCHLEAS NAOMH MCHEL

St Michaels GAA Club would like to wish all our players the best of luck in todays County Final. Thanks to all our members, sponsors and supporters for your assistance during the year. Your continued support is much appreciated.

MEET THE MANAGERS & CAPTAINS

MANAGER Francie Grehan Francie has represented Roscommon football team at all levels and in 1998 he made his first competitive start for the Roscommon Senior team. 2001 saw him win his first piece of silverware for Roscommon when they defeated Mayo in the Connacht Final and it was also a historic year for Francie and the Club when he was a awarded an All-Star for his starring role at Centre Half Back on the Roscommon team. Francie began his Managerial career with the Club Minors in 2008. Most recently he guided the Under 21 team to the Division Two Championship Title in 2010. This is his first year in charge of the Intermediate team and he is being ably assisted by selectors Paddy Naughton, Tommy Grehan, Adrian Tully and Aidan Heneghan.

CAPTAIN David Hoey David is 26 years of age and is a Primary School teacher in St. Josephs School, Moate. David has been a very prominent player for the club down through the years. He has represented Roscommon at all underage levels where he has captained both the Minor and Under 21 teams and he also had the distinction of representing Ireland as part of the Under 17 Compromise Rules Team in 2003. All this hard work and commitment led to David playing for Roscommon at Senior level.

MANAGER Dermot Lane Dermot is in his second year as manager of the St Michaels Intermediate team and also played for the St Michaels Junior team this year. He is married to Heather and they have three children. Dermot has played all grades of football with the Club and most of his success has come at adult level, winning a Junior A County title by defeating Creggs in the 1993 County Final and a Junior B County title last year, following a win over Padraig Pearses. Dermot was also part of the St Michaels teams, who were defeated in the U21 County Final in 1991, the Junior A Final in 1992 and the Intermediate County Final in 1999. Dermots first steps into management was with under-age teams, where he had success at U18 level, with League and Championship Titles in 2002. Some members of that team are also involved on today's team. Dermot is assisted by his selectors Padraig McShera, Pat Simon, Kieran McDermott and Paul Duignan. CAPTAIN Michael King Michael is a 23 year old Mechanical Engineer with Ward Automation, Galway. This year he is playing at full back, but in other years has played on the half back line or at corner back. Michael has played with on all our teams from the Under 12 up to Intermediate grade. He has won two Under 16 County League Titles and was part of the St Michaels teams, who were defeated in a U14 Championship Final and two Under 21 Championship Finals. Michael missed the 2006, 2008 and 2009 seasons through injury, but has shown great determination to regain full fitness and get back playing again. Michael is a brother of corner back Conor King.

ST AIDAN'S GAA CLUB - A BRIEF HISTORY

St Aidan's GAA Club was founded in 1956 as a result of the amalgamation of Kevin Barry's and Ballyforan Clubs. A number of meetings were held between representatives of both clubs before an agreement was reached. At the time of the amalgamation Kevin Barry's had a new set of Blue and Yellow Jerseys. Ballyforan had a well worn Red and white set but had 8 in funds. Blue and Yellow were agreed as the St Aidan's colours and an account was opened with a balance of 8. The late James Fallon and Sonny Kenny were elected first Chairperson and Secretary respectively. The Club contested a number of South finals before winning the County Junior Championship in 1966. We were graded Senior until we opted to play in the newly formed Intermediate competition in 1972 and we won the Intermediate title in 1975. Although we dropped to Intermediate this time last year we are hoping for an even shorter stay on this occasion. Overall the Club has won three Intermediate Titles, one O'Rourke Cup, Leo Kenny Connacht League Cup, All County League, 3 x O'Gara Cups, 2 x County Junior, Under 21, 2 x Minor, 4 x Under 16, 4 x Under 14, One Connacht Under 14 Feile Peil ng in 1987, 3 x Under 12 and the Lough Rea Under 10 tournament. CLUB OFFICERS 2012 President: Phonsie Tully, Chairman: John Carty; Minor Board Chairman: Shay Galvin; Treasurer: Mark Higgins; Secretary: Mark Mc Loughlin; P.R.O: Thomas Naughton. A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON On behalf of the club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued hard work and generous contributions throughout the year and also best wishes to Francie and his team in today's Final. John Carty CLUB CREST The Club Crest represents different features of the Parish. It was designed by club member Kieran Scott, assisted by Joe Mannion, in 1997. The Bridge with 13 Arches straddles the River Suck at Ballyforan. The Church is the Ancient Church at Coolderry, Dysart. The Scroll represents Noelle Davis and Patrick Kelly two well know poets from the Mount Talbot area of Four Roads. The Deer represents Deer roaming the woodlands of Derryfadda in the Galway area of the Parish. The Red and White in the centre represents the old colours of the Ballyforan Clubs before amalgamating with Kevin Barry's to become St Aidan's.

HISTORY OF ST. MICHAELS GAA CLUB

St Michaels GAA Club is based in the Parish of Ardcarne and also takes in the area of Corrigeenroe, which is the Roscommon part of the Aughanagh Parish. Records show that in the late part of the nineteenth century, the GAA was strong within the Clubs boundary, with teams registered in Cootehall, Crossna, Ballyfermoyle and Corrigeenroe. In 1941, Cootehall and Crossna amalgamated to form St Michaels, with Corrigeenroe and Drumboylan joining later. The new team qualified for the County Junior Final in 1941, and defeated St Patricks, only for St Patricks to be awarded the Title on an objection. The first Title won by St Michaels was the 1951 Northern Junior League and this was followed by the 1953 Northern Junior Championship. We were defeated by Kilteevan in the County Final, but were awarded the match after it was discovered that Kilteevan fielded illegal players. St. Michaels played Senior Football in 1954 and 1955 (no Intermediate Grade then) and in 1956 and 57 we joined with St Ronans to form a Senior team, known as Paddy Morans. Unfortunately Paddy Morans were defeated in both years by Elphin; on route to completing their historic three-in-a-row. St Michaels also reached the 1956 and 1958 Junior County Finals. The 1960s saw us win many Juveniles Titles and the 1970s were our most successful spell; winning a County Intermediate Title in 1971, County Junior Titles in 1970 and 78, and the Curley Cup in 1975. The Club were also defeated in the 1975 County Intermediate Final. Our Juveniles won four County Titles in six years between 1978 and 83 and in 1988 we reached the County Junior Final and won the Tansey Cup. The Club suffered heartbreaking defeats in the 1991 County U21 Final and 1992 County Junior Final but we returned to the Intermediate ranks by winning the Junior title in 1993, after a replay. We came close to moving to Senior in 1999 but suffered defeat in the County Final. The new century saw us take part in RTEs Celebrity Bainisteoir in 2009 and were defeated by Rockwell Rovers of Tipperary. The Clubs Juveniles teams have recorded some notable wins at various levels in recent times and last year our Junior B team won the Northern and County Championships. Last year saw a revival of Ladies Football at Under 12 level and this team reached a County Shield Final. Today the Club fields three adult teams (Intermediate, Junior and Under 21) and nine underage teams (from Under 6 to Minor, and an U12 Ladies team). The Club has also had great success in Scr, winning an All-Ireland Title in 1973, Connacht Titles in 1973, 1974,1977 and 1983 and many County Titles over the years. In recent years Scr has also been revived with entries in all grades. Finally, when St Michaels is mentioned, the one name that is always associated with the Club is the late Jim Henry (RIP), who served as Club Secretary for over fifty years. We know that today Jim is looking down, one proud St Michaels Man.

A word from the Chairperson of St Michaels GAA Club

St. Michaels are thrilled to be back in the County Intermediate Football Final. Our players have put in a huge effort this year and on behalf of everyone in our Club I hope they get their reward. I would also like to acknowledge the input of our management team; Dermot Lane, Pat Simon, Padraig McShera, Kieran McDermott and Paul Duignan. The success of under-age teams in recent years has had a big knock on effect on today's Intermediate team. A big thank you to all our coaches and volunteers, who give of their time in ensuring our under-age continues to flourish. Thank you to our main sponsor Joe Simon Hardware and all our sponsors and supporters throughout the Club; your continued support is greatly appreciated. I look forward to a good sporting game with St Aidans, with hopefully the Jimmy Murray Cup making its first visit to our Club.

Dermot Cox. Chairperson.

The following are the main strands of the programme and may give readers an insight into the development of our games. Coaches Roscommon GAA has two full-time Games Promotion Officers (one for Football and one for Hurling) and nine part-time Coaches; seven devoted to football and two to hurling. Their assignments and the coaching programme as a whole is managed on a day-today basis by Games Manager, Willie Hegarty Coach education Twenty one coach education courses were held during the year and the breakdown is as follows: Course Code Number of courses Participants Foundation Football 9 117 Award 1 Adult Award 1 Youth Foundation Foundation (TY Students) Total Football Football Hurling Football 1 1 3 7 21 11 11 61 139 339

Development squads All clubs are invited to nominate players for County Development Squad training each year. In football there are two squads at under 14 and 15 and one at under 16 and 17. In hurling there is one squad at under 14, 15 and 16. When finalised these squads play in Connacht and national Blitz competitions. The following table highlights the numbers involved at each age level: Age group Under 14 Under 15 Under 16 Under 17 Under 14 Under 15 Under 16 Total Code Football Football Football Football Hurling Hurling Hurling No. of squads 2 2 1 1 2 1 1 10 No. of players 48 45 30 35 35 20 20 233 No. of coaches 11 5 5 3 4 2 2 32

Strength and conditioning programmes are also in place for county development squads. Schools The coaches mentioned above deliver the Schools Coaching Programme to 86 primary and eight post primary schools. At primary level it is carried out in two nine week blocks, Autumn & Spring, and at secondary level throughout the school term. An Agility, Balance and Co-ordination (ABC) programme has been piloted in a number of primary schools, and teachers are being trained in the delivery of this programme. Club blitzes Under 8 & Under 10 blitzes are organised in both football & hurling with clubs divided into groups who play each other on a home & away basis. This culminates in the county blitz days where every club in the county is invited to participate. We are grateful to Oran, Kilbride and St Dominics for the use of their pitches to run the blitzes over the past few weeks. Kelloggs GAA Cl Camps Twelve Cl Camps, eight football and four hurling, were held this summer and the Special Needs Camp, which was piloted last year in association with Roscommon Sports Partnership, was also held again this year Conclusion Thanks is extended to the teachers in the schools, the clubs and the coaches who volunteer their time to work with the county players of the future in our development squads. Thanks also to the officers of the County Board at minor & senior level for their continued support for Roscommon Coaching & Games Development and of course Willie Hegarty Games Manager whose hard work underpins all our activities.
