In John 17 Jesus made a prayer for success that has revolutionized the world. He knew that the time had come for Him to go away from this world to the Father. Having once had love for those in the world who were his, his love for them went on to the end. So He endured the cross and all its sufferings because He knew that by dying he would put an end to him who had the power of death, that is to say, the Evil One. It was a dark hour for Him, and His soul was deeply sorrowed. He asked His disciples to watch with Him: My soul is very sad, even to death: keep watch with me here, but they were dead tired and soon fell fast asleep. It was so that the only one who could save us from our sins and give us hope had to endure alone in agony the burden of our shame and guilt while those closest to Him succumbed to the fatigues of that long day.

What Jesus had in mind when He was making this prayer for success was the redemption and foundation of what would be called His Church. He could see the thousands of millions who would be saved by Him and that vision had an empowering effect on His determination to complete the work he had taken upon Himself and obey Gods will to the utmost. He is praying for those who will remain, the now frightened and exhausted bunch of disciples, soon to be scattered and flee in dismay. He doesnt look to the circumstances around Him, but eagerly prophecies the time when the Holy Spirit will come upon this fragile remnant of His ministry on Earth and produce a transformation that will shake the foundation of the Roman Empire and begin a process that

will culminate in the glorious day when Jesus will return with all His saints.
