Miracle
League
Photos and story by
Ricky J. Carrasco
I never intended to start a
club, says Gracie Martinez
about the Road Queens, El
Pasos all female MC, I met a
lot of women that simply
wanted to ride. Many of these
women I didnt even know off
the bike. Almost 10 years later,
and the Road Queens have be-
come a force within the El Paso
biker community. We have al-
ways been received well here.
We have earned the respect of
other clubs by working hard.
Gracie has been not only the
president of the Road Queens
since the start in 2003, but is
also the El Paso Coalitions sec-
retary. The Road Queens now
have one of the best attended
bike runs of the year in May,
averaging about 350 riders.
There are the stereotypes of
being a woman in a mans
world, but its different in the
biker community. We all just
genuinely move to similar
causes. One of those causes
was the reason we were at Bar-
nett that day.
The Road Queens have sup-
ported the El Paso Miracle
League and their field at 7499
Viscount behind Cielo Vista.
Sandra Olivar, Executive Direc-
tor for the EP field explained
how they serve the community.
The Miracle League serves
kids with physical and mental
disabilities so they can play
baseball and have other activi-
ties.
The field was created in 2007 at
a cost of $1 million raised by
donations and other fundraisers.
Activities at the field include
baseball, bowling, soccer and t-
ball for the little kids. Currently
14 teams participate with
around 300 registered players.
Each player has at least one
coach and the field has served
players from 3 years old all the
way up to 71 years old. We can
be real flexible, we dont turn
away anyone. The all-volun-
teer staff at the field provides
the uniforms, equipment, and
organizes the teams. The Mo-
torcycle community has always
been a big benefactor to our
field.
Cyndi Barba can attest to both
sides of this run. She is a mem-
ber of the Queens and also a
parent to one of the Miracle
League kids. Lalito has been a
member of the Longhorns team
since the league started 7 years
ago. Lalito, now a teenager,
loves going to the games. Both
of my other kids are in sports
and before, Lalito used to just
be on the sidelines. Now, he has
something to prepare for to. He
gets excited to be on the field,
always smiling, always laugh-
ing. He is has become very
comfortable to see and play
with other kids like him. They
dont have limitations. They
just do the best they can. There
was that one game I remember
where one of his teammates was
up to bat. Lalito just got ex-
cited, cheering, and playing the
crowd.
The El Paso run was just part of
an attempt to break an atten-
dance record for a nationwide
run. Though, the record wasnt
broken, the El Paso run had
good attendance, with over 225
riders, raising close to $3000
that will be used for field reno-
vations. Those are good num-
bers considering that there were
four other biker events going
on, including a large run in Las
Cruces.
But that seems to be the idea
within the local biker scene.
Thats what I love about being
a biker in El Paso. When you go
out of town and see a run like
this, the attendance is usually
just that club and whatever in-
dependents can attend. In El
Paso, everybody shows up.
Everybody gets along, the sport
bike riders, the independents,
the clubs. (As evidence of
this, at a recent run, members of
the Las Cruces Chapter Centau-
ros and Juarez club Dorados de
Villa were in attendance.) I
was the only biker at one of the
national planning committee
meetings and I advised other
cities on how to approach and
coordinate with their local
clubs.
Cyndi remembers how one
player, Ian, was so impressed
with the bikers after he helped
hand out doorprizes at Mulli-
gans. He said he wanted a vest
to match the bikers. Everybody
gave him something. The Ban-
didos gave him a cap, the CMA
gave him patches. He was so
excited and almost embarrassed
with all the attention.
Cyndi and the rest of the Road
Queens would like to thank
their sponsors and all the riders
who came out to support the run
and the UTEP Lady Miner Soft-
ball team for helping with the
run. Cyndi would also like to
invite El Paso to come out to
the field during one of the
games to see the fun and excite-
ment.

Are we
having In-
dian sum-
mer?
What a fall it has been here in
El Paso! Temperatures have been
running above normal for the last
couple of months (mid and upper
80's). This warm weather is al-
ways welcome for us bikers. I
had a recent conversation with
one rider that referred to our re-
cent weather as being an Indian
summer. We had a good conver-
sation about the use of this termi-
nology.
An Indian summer refers to a
time of year when temperatures
are well
above normal. It's a period of
about a week that is associated
with warm,
calm weather occurring in the au-
tumn months. Many references
point out that a true Indian sum-
mer can not occur until there has
been a frost or killing freeze (as I
write this article, we have yet to
witness those temperatures). In
most instances, this is a weather
phenomenon that occurs in the
fall. It can be applied in winter, as
long as an area experiences well
above average
temperatures.
I was curious how the term Indian
summer came about. I checked
out many sources as to the origins
and there are many. According
the 1985 Old Farmer's Almanac,
the term goes back to the very
early settlers in New
England. It says that each year
the people would welcome the ar-
rival of a cold wintry weather in
late October when they could
leave their stockades (camp or
military base) unarmed. But then
came a time when it would sud-
denly turn warm again, and the
Native Americans would decide
to have one more go at the set-
tlers. "Indian summer," the set-
tlers called it.

Rendering
where-ever
Photos and story by
Ricky J. Carrasco
Lets say you are walking down a
city street, minding your own busi-
ness, when someone near you trips
and falls. What is your reaction?
Do you stop, turn around and help
them up? Do you keep walking and
just pretend you didnt see? Do
you, as was epidemic a few years
ago up until today, suffer from the
Americas Funniest Videos syn-
drome and stop, stare, point and
laugh? Do you assume that some-
one must surely stop to help that
person, somehow absolving you
from any responsibility?
Moving on is not part of the Biker
Code. When I started riding, I was
instructed to carry tools (even
though Im not mechanically in-
clined) and that I must not pass a
stranded motorcyclist without stop-
ping to see if there was something I
could do. In El Paso, hardly a
week goes by without an MC either
helping a charity, a neighbor, or
even sometimes a random person
that just needs a hand up.
On September 22, at around 9:15
pm, Centauro El Paso president
Manny Rodriguez was returning
home after doing some work on his
bike at his friend and his VP,
Roberts house. On Edgemere
Street near Rich Beem, Manny was
on the left lane of the street. A
white SUV pulled up close on the
right lane. For whatever reason, the
SUV pulled away, and then decided
to turn left, cutting him off. In
order to not slam directly into its
side, Manny managed to move
around the truck and may have
clipped the SUV and lost control of
the bike. At around 25-30 mph, he
skidded across the street and finally
slammed into the gutter.
Manny ended up a week in the hos-
pital with road rash up and down
his left leg, 3 broken ribs, broken
shoulder, a 10-11 inch cut with 186
stitches on his head.
But Manny did not want this story
to be about himself and just about
his accident. He survived. And, he
is also surviving cancer, having
been diagnosed with colon cancer
two years ago, which has since
moved to his liver.
What he wants his story to be about
is that he is thankful to have sur-
vived, and more thankful still that
he wasnt wearing a helmet and,
yet, he somehow survived head
trauma. While he was in the hospi-
tal, Robert says that 4 other motor-
cycle traumas also came into the
hospital. Manny would like for his
brother bikers to at least consider
wearing a helmet. His Harley had
a few thousand dollars in lighting
and exhaust accessories (3 LED,
super bright headlights, wide diam-
eter pipes). (the driver) knew I
was there, and yet that didnt stop
her from pulling in front of me.
They say if you have the bright
lights and the loud pipes, its insur-
ance, but its not real security. I will
be riding again soon. Im already
walking! But when I ride again, I
will also have a helmet on.
Whats worse is that the lady who
caused the accident never stopped
and was never found. Another mo-
torcyclist and driver stopped to
help. Manny described how, as he
lay on the street with the first gen-
tleman, the officer who responded
to the accident peeked over his
shoulder and asked, How many
beers have you had? which is ob-
viously not proper first response
procedure. Further, both persons
who stopped for Manny were given
citations for various prior infrac-
tions that had nothing to do with
the incident, but came up when the
officer ran their licenses through
the system. That was incredibly
opportunistic of the officer. What
incentive is there for someone to
stop and render aid? People are
hesitant to stop as it is! Plus, the of-
ficer questioning me like that, I felt
humiliated on top of the pain I al-
ready felt.
I would like to have my brother
bikers to at least consider wearing a
helmet. I know its cool to feel the
air rushing past you, to feel like an
eagle in the sky, but there can be
consequences with that freedom. I
am thankful to the Lord that I can
share these moments still with my
family and friends. On the way
home from the hospital, Manny
says he passed by the scene of an-
other motorcycle wreck, but this
one, the rider already had a sheet
covering up the body.
Despite all that, Centauros-El
Pasos 3rd annual Kids with Cancer
run went off without a hitch.
Manny stated that it was one of
their most successful runs, raising
around $8000. The money will be
used to donate to various known
patients and charities. Ojos de
Dios, a Juarez organization that
helps kids with cancer, Provi-
dences Childrens Hospital that is
dedicated to pediatric cancer treat-
ment, and Eileen, a little girl with
cancer in Juarez have already been
earmarked to receive some funds
for their efforts. Manny and the
other Centauros would like to thank
the 300+ participants in the run,
The Cantina Flys and all the other
bands who performed and the all
the sponsors who made it happen.
Hospital photos provided by
Manny Rodriguez.

Survivors:
Helping
to Heal
In October, Survivors MC held
their annual BADD run, Bikers
Against Drunk Drivers. The run
included various stops around
the city, ending in a cook-out at
Album Park. This year, the run
benefits the New Life Restora-
tion rehab center headed by Pas-
tor Bobby.
New Life Restoration is a mens,
faith-based live-in center that
reaches out to the alcoholic, the
drug addict, the gang banger and
anybody in need. We work with
them through the Bible, Bible
study, and a Biblical approach
for their path to recovery, says
Pastor Bobby, center administra-
tor.
Pastor Bobby has been running
the center for three years and has
been in the church for 25 years.
I am a product of a mens home.
Many times, we believe that if
you want to make it work, you
have to make it on your own. If
youve failed with your own
method, then maybe you should
turn to Christ and have him
help. The program consists
usually of around 6 months or
more of counseling, working
around the home and church and
dedicating themselves to the pro-
gram. Sometimes, simply remov-
ing themselves from their previ-
ous situation on the streets is
enough to start helping. Some
stay in church, either ours or
some kind of church. Some just
want to change their surround-
ings.
Pastor Bobby, who himself is a
product of a mens home, gave
an example of a success story.
Ace is now doing well. Hes the
youth pastor at a different
church. Hes a success. He was a
typical crack addict. Hed been
to prison and everything. But he
got a hold of it. When theyre
making it [recovering], some-
times they just dont turn back.
By his own numbers, Pastor
Bobby says some of the men will
eventually be able to hold a job,
become productive citizens in
the community. They become
part of the church and the com-
munity and they dont become
part of that scene again.
Pastor Bobby describes himself
as good friends with Dimple,
president of the Survivors. He
also would like to thank the vari-
ous clubs, like the Black Widows
and Mad Hatters and others who
have done charity runs for his
center in the past. God has al-
ways kept me in the bike com-
munity, but I dont have a bike
myself. If any of your readers are
looking for a change, were here
for you.
If you would like to have more
information on New Life
Restoration, please call 533-

Motorcycle displayed at
owners request as memorial
to tsunami victims
MILWAUKEE (Oct. 24, 2012)
Harley-Davidson Museum has
recently unveiled a special dis-
play featuring Ikuo Yokoyamas
Harley-Davidson motorcycle
that drifted for more than a year
across the Pacific Ocean follow-
ing the tragic tsunami that devas-
tated parts of northern Japan last
year.
The 2004 Harley-Davidson
FXSTB Softail Night Train, re-
covered off the coast of British
Columbia by Peter Mark, is being
displayed at Yokoyamas request.
He asked to have the motorcycle
preserved in its current condition
and displayed at the Harley-
Davidson Museum as a memorial
to those whose lives were lost or
forever changed by the 2011
tsunami in Japan.
Were truly humbled to display
Mr. Yokoyamas motorcycle,
said Bill Davidson, Vice Presi-
dent of the Harley-Davidson Mu-
seum. This motorcycle has an
amazing story to tell, and we are
honored to be able to share it.
The remarkable story of the mo-
torcycles survival and recovery
made international headlines after
Mark found it washed ashore on a
remote beach on British Colum-
bias Graham Island at low tide.
He discovered the motorcycle,
still bearing its Japanese license
plate, in a container where the
bike was being stored by
Yokoyama.
Working with news agencies and
representatives from Deeley
Harley-Davidson Canada and
Harley-Davidson Japan, contact
was made with Yokoyama, who
lost his home and currently lives
in temporary housing in Miyagi
Prefecture, Japan. Still struggling
to rebuild his life in the aftermath
of the disaster, Yokoyama de-
clined Harley-Davidsons offer to
return the bike to him, although
he was grateful for the offer and
touched by the outpouring of sup-
port from Harley riders around
the world.

Las Cruces
Toys for
Kids
Motorcycle
Parade
The 32nd Annual Toys for Kids
Motorcycle Parade will take place
November 18, 2012. The parade
will end at a new location this year
at the Las Cruces Convention
Center at the corner of University
and El Paseo.
The primary beneficiary of the
Toys for Kids Motorcycle Parade
is Tresco TOTS, the only non-
profit early intervention agency in
southern New Mexico. TOTS pro-
vides physical, occupational,
speech and developmental therapy,
among other services, to children
from birth to three years of age
who have, or are at risk for devel-
opmental delays. So, toys that en-
courage the development of fine
and gross motor skills, language,
thinking, music, and creativity are
great choices. Due to the tremen-
dous support we receive, many
other agencies in the area have re-
ceived toys from the TFK Parade.
Last year at least 23 agencies that
support children and hundreds of
Southern New Mexico children
benefited from the TFK parade!
We have a new location, but the
same fun and traditions continue;
including a larger space for the
bike show, live music, door prizes,
grand prize drawing, raffles, a
silent auction, vendors and more!
Motorcyclists will gather and reg-
ister at Mesilla Valley Mall from
9:00 a.m. to 11:30; participants
can also register at the Convention
Center. The parade will leave the
mall at noon sharp. To participate
in the parade, motorcycles must be
street legal, registered and insured.
If you dont have a motorcycle,
join us at the Convention Center!
We are asking non-motorcycle
drivers to park at NMSU, or Pio-
neer Bank on the northeast corner
of El Paseo and University to
allow bikers to park in the Con-
vention Center lot. A donation of
$10 and a new toy valued at $7.00
or more per person gets you a
meal and two beverages, plus the
chance to win a door prize and the
grand prize.
LCPD has determined the Parade
route to be as follows:
Exit Mesilla Valley Mall on Don
Roser. Head west on Missouri to
Solano. South on Solano to Uni-
versity. West on University to El
Paseo; Left on El Paseo and Right
into Las Cruces Convention Cen-
ter.
If youd like to donate toys but are
unable to make it on November
18th, you can drop off toys at
Tresco TOTS, 2325 E Nevada or
Wheelsport, 105 Hanks Dr. in
Mesilla Park. For information,
call Mack at 575-527-7552 or
Kong at 575-523-1061.

There are plenty of people who dream of owning their own Harley
Davidson motorcycle. Some of them even scrimp and save their
whole lives until they have enough to buy one. Others may go out on
a whim and get financing one day and drive their new bike home a
couple of hours later.
Regardless of which situation you find yourself in, you need to know
a couple of things before you walk into a dealership to make sure
that you get the best deal on the best bike possible.
Although you will find plenty of different bikes for sale, it is impor-
tant that you know what you need to look for beyond just the bike.
Many people prefer to buy directly from an authorized dealer, but
there are also other ways to get your hands on a new bike, whether it
be from a second-hand dealer or from a private owner. Depending on
what you are looking for and how much money you have to spend,
you will need to get started with a search on the Internet to point you
in the right direction. The more you know about the different options
and price ranges that are available, the more specific you will be able
to make your search online.
Do not worry if you are not sure what exactly you want; there are
plenty of websites available with all kinds of information about dif-
ferent models to help you find one that will suit your tastes and your
budget. Speaking of budget, you want to make sure that you set an
affordable amount of money for yourself that you can afford before
you walk in the door to a dealership, and stand firm with it. While
some people fall into the trap of making rash decisions on things
they really cannot afford, you want to make sure that you protect
yourself and be reasonable so that you can enjoy your new bike
without constantly worrying about how to afford it.
Be sure that you find out enough about bikes to be able to inspect
them while you are shopping; although it would be nice to be able to
take someone else's word for the quality of a Harley Davidson that is
used (and new to a certain extent), you will want to be able to see
things for yourself that everything is in good working order.
You want to be able to tell if there is evidence of a previous accident
or collision, and also look for significant or premature wear and tear.
Check the condition of the brakes and the tires, and don't forget to
check inside the gas tank to see if there is any residue in there that
may indicate a future problem.
These are just a couple of things to check up on when you are shop-
ping for that new Harley Davidson bike.

Lane
Camfield
and the
Seed of
Abraham
Motorcy-
cle Club
By Joe Olvera , 2012
To Lane Camfield, vice presi-
dent of the El Paso Chapter of
the Seed of Abraham Motorcycle
Club, spreading the gospel is
very much a part of his life. So
is riding his 2010 Harley David-
son Street Glide Trike a mo-
torcycle with three tires instead
of two. I think trikes are safer,
stronger, and easier to spot when
Im on the road, Camfield said.
I like to ride long distances on
it and have gone to California
and to Tennessee. Of course, I
also ride it in El Paso.
Camfield, 41, who owns Sign
Depot, a business that does all
types of signs, including decals,
banners, vehicle wraps, and even
business cards, becoming a
Born-Again Christian started for
him when he was five years old.
Members of the Seed of Abra-
ham MC attend Bible Teaching
Churches, spreading the gospel
to sites near and far to those who
are interested. The first such
club started in Henryville, IN
and has spread throughout the
United States, including Texas.
The clubs are also international,
with Chapters in India, Canada,
Belgium, and Australia to name
just a few.
Ive been a member of the bik-
ing community for six years
now, said Camfield. My father
was asked by the national Seed
of Abraham Club to create one
in El Paso, so he did and I
helped. We do all kinds of char-
ity work, such as visiting pa-
tients in hospitals, doing toy runs
and helping out members of the
public who may be having prob-
lems, but, especially, helping
bikers who may be having trou-
ble of one sort or another. Ive
been riding bikes now for sev-
eral years, especially when I
used to live in Chaparral, NM.
Although he has a car, he prefers
his trike.
Camfield, who is married to
Anita, doesnt have any children.
His advice to bikers on how to
avoid accidents? Be on the
lookout for traffic, because
sometimes drivers dont see you,
so youve got to watch and make
sure that they see you. His fa-
ther, who is 67, still rides a bike,
so he thinks that youre never
too old to start. I love the free-
dom that riding a bike gives
you, Camfield says. Belonging
to the biking community is a
great experience. Ive met some
of the greatest people I have
known.
