Quality assurance - environment

Certified quality: ISO 9001

MT20066

A major asset
In each of its units, Schneider Electric integrates a functional organization whose main role is to check quality and monitor compliance with standards. This procedure is: b uniform throughout all departments; b recognized by many customers and approved organizations. But above all, it is its strict application that has allowed us to obtain the recognition of an independent organization: The French Quality Assurance Association (AFAQ). The quality system for the design and manufacture of MCset is certified to be in conformity with the requirements of ISO 9001: 2000 quality assurance standard.

Strict and systematic checks

During its manufacture, each MCset is subject to systematic routine testing, intended to check both quality and conformity: b sealing test; b filling pressure test; b measuring of opening and closing speeds; b measuring of operating torque; b dielectric test; b testing of safety systems and interlocks; b testing of low voltage components; b conformity with drawings and diagrams. The results obtained are given by the quality control department on each devices test certificate.
MT20067

Protected environment
As part of the groups environmental policy, Schneider Electric Services provides you with an operational subsidiary to recover medium voltage switchgear and thus eliminate any discharge to atmosphere. In order to help you protect the environment and to relieve you of any concerns in terms of stock or dismantling, Schneider Electric Services offers to take back your equipment at the end of its life. MCset has been designed with environmental protection in mind: b the materials used, insulators and conductors are identified, easily separable and recyclable; b the SF6 can be recovered at the end of the equipments life and reused after treatment; b production sites are certified to ISO 14000.

Make up of an MCset switchboard

MCset switchboards are made up of several interconnected functional units. Power connections are made between functional units within a switchboard via a single busbar. The electrical continuity of all metal frames is provided by the connection of each functional units earthing busbar to the switchboards main earthing circuit. Low voltage wiring trays are provided in the switchboard above the LV control cabinets. LV cables can enter the switchboard through the top or bottom of each functional unit.

Description of a functional unit

A functional unit comprises all equipment in the main and auxiliary circuits which together provide a protection function. Each functional unit combines all the components which are required to fulfil this function: b the cubicle; b the protection, monitoring and control system; b the withdrawable part.

The cubicle
The cubicle is of LSC2B (Loss of Service Continuity Category) type as defined by IEC standard 62271-200, in other words the medium voltage parts are compartmented using metal partitions (PM class) which are connected to earth and which separate: b the busbars; b the withdrawable part (circuit breaker, fuse-contactor, disconnector truck or earthing truck); b MV connections, earthing switch, current sensors and voltage transformers as required. MCset guarantees a high level of protection of people; when a compartment containing a main circuit is open, the other compartments and/or functional units may remain energised. The low voltage auxiliaries and monitoring unit are in a control cabinet separated from the medium voltage section. Four basic cubicle layouts are offered: b incomer or feeder AD b line up bussection CL - GL b busbar metering and earthing TT b switch-fuse feeder DI AD and CL cubicles have withdrawable switchgear.

The protection, monitoring and control system

This includes: b Sepam, protection, monitoring and control unit; b current sensors, which may be of 3 types: v conventional current transformers, v low voltage toroid type current transformers, v CSP type broad-range current transformers. b voltage transformers; b zero sequence core balance current transformers (CSH type).

The withdrawable part

This includes: b the circuit breaker, contactor or the earthing truck with its closing and opening mechanism, or the disconnector truck; b the lever-type propulsion mechanism for racking in-out; b interlocks to fix the withdrawable part on the fixed part either in service position or disconnected.

Protection of people

Internal arc withstand

Internal arc version: MCset is designed to withstand and protect operators in the case of failure due to an internal arc. MCset has been successfully tested using type tests. MCset proposes several options to install an internal arc switchboard. b 3-sided internal arc protection For an MCset switchboard fitted against a wall, access to the rear of the cubicle is impossible. Internal arc protection on 3 sides is sufficient. b 4-sided internal arc protection In the case of an MCset switchboard installed in the middle of a room, internal arc protection on 4 sides is necessary in order to protect an operator who goes behind the cubicle. b installation in a room with limited ceiling height v ceiling height over 2.8 meters, it is possible to install a tunnel in order to avoid hot gas to be reflected by the ceiling. b internal arcing detector MCset has a system enabling the detection of internal arcing and disconnecting of power supply in order to limit the duration of the fault to less than 140 ms. This system incorporates an electro-mechanical fail-safe trip system, located on the cubicle flaps. This unit transmits information to Sepam to give the circuit breaker upstream of the fault the opening order.
MT20076

MCset switchboard with tunnel

MCset
Basic version (gas exhaust): MCset is designed to eliminate the effects of internal arcing in total safety, due to: b metal flaps positioned above the enclosure, which in the case of internal fault, limit overpressure in the compartments. b nonflammable materials used for the cubicle.

Dependable mechanical control devices

All operations are carried out from the front face, including access to connections and busbars. The user is guided through icon-diagrams on each front panel making it easy to understand the operating sequence and device status. Interlocks and padlocks prevent operator errors. Several additional levels of security also protect operators: b racking in and out is only possible with the door closed. b the very extensive set of mechanical and electrical interlocks do not allow operator error. These can be added to by key locks or padlocks according to specific operating procedures. Each selector can be fitted with one to three padlocks. b all operations are carried out from the front face, including access to connections and busbars. b the voltage present indicator is located on the front face of the functional unit, in the immediate vicinity of the earthing switch control.

MT20077

Options
b disarming of circuit breaker when racking out. This function enables the circuit breaker control springs to be disarmed during the extraction operation. b disabling of racking in. This function disables the possibility of racking the withdrawable part in if the front panel (cable compartment) is not installed.

(1) Overall + 175 mm for switchboard internal arcing 4 sides. (2) Limited by fuses.

DI cubicles including a fuse switch are used to supply power and protect low power transformers. E.g.: auxiliary service transformers in primary substations. All operations are carried out from the front face, including access to connections and busbars. All functional interlocks meet recommendations in IEC 62271-200: b the switch is only possible to close if the earthing switch is open and the connection access panel is in place; b closing of the earthing switch is only possible if the switch is open; b opening of the access panel to medium voltage connections and fuses is only possible of the earthing switches upstream and downstream of the fuses are closed; b the switch is locked in the open position when the access panel is taken off. The voltage presence indicator is situated on the front face of the functional unit, integrated in the switchs control panel.

CSP type broad-range current transformers

CSP type current sensors, designed for the Sepam 2000, work on the Rogowski coil principle. CSP sensors use a winding around an insulating core with no magnetic circuit, which prevents saturated and residual flux. Therefore, they are completely linear, and deliver an accurate secondary signal, a perfect image of the primary current, without distortion for both steady and transient states in the primary circuits. These sensors have much wider primary current ranges than current transformers do. The combining of CSP sensors and Sepam 2000 gives a consistent protection and measurement system. This in turn makes current sensor specification simpler (choosing from 3 sensors for a rated insulation level of 24 kV).

Voltage transformers
These supply power to: b measuring, metering and monitoring devices; b relays or protective devices; b auxiliary LV sources for various types of switchgear; all these devices are protected and insulated from the MV section. They are installed at the bottom of the functional unit. In the withdrawable fuse version, the voltage transformers are attached to a side wall. The energized part is entirely encapsulated in an epoxy resin, which provides both electrical insulation and excellent mechanical strength. They include the following models: b with one insulated MV terminal, for connection between neutral and phase conductors in three-phase systems with withdrawable MV fuses; b with two insulated MV terminals, for connection between phase conductors.

Presentation
LF1-2-3 circuit breakers equip cubicles AD1-2-3 and CL1-2-3 for voltage values of between 7.2 and 17.5 kV. Breaking is based on the principle of self-expansion in SF6. The 3 main poles are contained in an insulating enclosure of the sealed system type, which requires no filling during the service life of the device (in conformity with standard IEC 62271-100). This gas-tight enclosure is filled with SF6 at a low relative pressure of 0.15 Mpa (1.5 bars). Low pressure filling ensures reliable gas tightness. LF circuit breakers are equipped with a pressure switch. LF1-2-3 circuit breakers are actuated by RI type stored energy release mechanisms.
PE55051

DE55117

Principle of the self-expansion breaking technique

b a

This technique is the result of a large amount of experience in SF6 technology and significant research effort. It combines the rotating arc technique with thermal expansion to create the conditions to cool and extinguish the arc. This enables the control mechanism energy to be reduced as well as arc contact erosion; mechanical and electrical endurance is therefore increased. The operating sequence in a self-expansion breaking chamber whose moving part is actuated by the mechanical control is as follows: b Fig. 1: the circuit breaker is closed; b Fig. 2: on opening of the main contacts (a), the current is transferred to the breaking circuit (b); b Fig. 3: on separation of the arcing contacts, an electrical arc appears in the expansion chamber (c); the arc rotates under the effect of the magnetic field created by the coil (d) which has the breaking current running through it; the overpressure produced by the increase in gas temperature in the gas expansion chamber (c) causes gas flow which blows the arc within the tubular arcing contact (e), thus causing it to extinguish when the current passes to zero; b Fig. 4: circuit breaker open.

Presentation
SF range circuit breakers equip cubicles AD4 and CL4 for rated voltage values of 24 kV. They work on the basis of the puffer type principle in SF6, which is used as a breaking and insulating medium. Each of the 3 poles have an independent insulating enclosure which forms a filled pressure system in compliance with IEC standard 62271-100. Each pole forms a gas-tight unit filled with low pressure SF6 at low relative pressure of 0.05 to 0.35 MPa (0.5 to 3.5 bars) according to the performance level required. No filling is required during the equipments life. According to the performance levels, it is possible to optionally equip SF6 circuit breakers with a pressure switch to act on an alarm in the case of a pressure drop. SF6 range circuit breakers are actuated by a GMH type spring mechanism.
PE55052

DE55118

Principle of the puffer breaking technique.

The main contacts and arcing contacts are initially closed (Fig. 1). Pre-compression (Fig. 2) When the contacts begin to open, the piston slightly compresses the SF6 gas in the pressure chamber. Arcing period (Fig. 3) The arc appears between the arcing contacts. The piston continues its downward movement. A small quantity of gas, directed by the insulating nozzle is injected across the arc. For the breaking of low currents, the arc is cooled by forced convection. However, for high currents, thermal expansion causes the hot gases to move towards the cooler parts of the pole unit. The distance between the two arcing contacts becomes sufficient for the current to be broken when it reaches the zero point, due to the dielectric properties of the SF6. Sweeping overstroke (Fig. 4) The moving parts finish their movement and the injection of cold gas continues until the contacts are completely open.

Withdrawable parts Rollarc contactor

Description
b three main poles located in the pressurised enclosure; b electromagnetic operating mechanism with: v magnetic latching for Rollarc 400, v mechanical latching for Rollarc 400D. b upstream and downstream terminals for power circuit connections; b pressure switch equipped with a NO contact for continuous monitoring of SF6; b mechanical interlocking of the contactor in the open position to prevent racking in or out with the contacts closed; b 3 HPC fuses with striker pin and auxiliary contact to trip the contactor.
PE55053

An optimum solution
The Rollarc contactor uses rotating arc breaking in SF6 gas. A magnetic field causes the arc to rotate between the arcing contacts, the field is created by the passage of the arc through a blow-out coil (Fig. 1). The rotation movement cools the arc by forced convention. The arc rotation rate depends on the current to be broken. The energy required to extinguish the arc is supplied by the electrical system. The operating mechanism is simple and economical. Modulation of the rotation rate ensures soft breaking without any dangerous overvoltage or current chopping. The Rollarc has a high breaking capacity and may be used without a time delay in combination with fuses.
DE55119

Fig. 1

DE55120

Contactor operation
At the beginning of the opening operation, the main contacts and arcing contacts are closed (Fig. 2). The main circuit is interrupted by the separation of the main contacts (Fig. 3). The arcing contacts are still closed. The arcing contacts separate shortly after the main contacts. The arc that is created is subjected to the electromagnetic field produced by the coil, which is proportional to the current to be interrupted. The arc rotates rapidly, driven by the electromagnetic force and is cooled by forced convection (arcing period, Fig. 4). Due to the phase-shift between the current and the magnetic field, this force is still significant around the current zero point. At the zero point, the gap between the two arcing rings recovers its original dielectric strength due to the intrinsic properties of SF6 (contactor open, Fig. 5).

Fuses
The fuses used are of the FUSARC CF or FERRAZ type (Standard IEC 60282.1 and DIN 43625) with high breaking capacity. Substantial fault current limitation reduces the electrodynamic stresses on the load-side components (contactor, cables, CT, etc). A blown fuse device is used to open the three poles of the contactor.

DI switch cubicle

Switch
The three rotating contacts are placed in an enclosure filled with gas to a relative pressure of 0.04 MPa (0.4 bars). The system offers maximum operating reliability: b gas tightness The SF6 filled enclosure is of the sealed pressure system type. Sealing tightness is always checked in the factory. b safety v the switch may be in one of three positions: closed, open or earthed, giving a natural interlocking system that prevents operator error. Moving contact rotation is driven by a fast acting mechanism that is independent of the operator. v the device combines the breaking and disconnecting functions. v the SF6-enclosed earthing switch has a short-circuit making capacity in compliance with standards. b breaking principle The outstanding qualities of SF6 gas are used to extinguish the electrical arc. To increase cooling of the arc, a relative movement is created between the arc and the gas. The arc strikes when the fixed and moving contacts separate. The combination of the current and a magnetic field created by a permanent magnet causes the arc to rotate around the fixed contact, extending and cooling it until it is extinguished at current zero point. The distance between the fixed and moving contacts is then sufficient to withstand the recovery voltage. This system is both simple and dependable, and it provides improved electrical endurance due to very low wear of contacts.

Switchgear resistance to ageing in a substation depends on 3 key factors

b the need for correctly made connections New cold connecting technologies offer easy installation and favour durability in time. Their design means they can be used in polluted environments with harsh atmospheres. b the impact of relative humidity The installing of a heating element is essential in climates with high relative humidities and significant temperature differentials. b ventilation control The dimensions of air vents must be appropriate for the dissipated energy in the substation. They must only sweep across the transformer environment. Cold connected terminals Schneider Electrics experience has led it to favour this technology wherever possible for optimum durability. The maximum acceptable cable cross-section for standard assemblies are: b 630 mm2 for incomer or feeder cubicles with single-pole cables; b 400 mm2 for incomer or feeder cubicles with three-pole cables; b 95 mm2 for transformer protection cubicles with fuses. Access to the compartment is only possible when the earthing switch is closed. Tightening torques for cables will be attained using a dynamo wrench set to 50 mN.
