Programs Progress
Health Policy Fellows Releases Call for Applications The RWJF Health Policy Fellows program is now accepting applications for 20132014 fellows. The application deadline is November 7, 2013, at 3 p.m. (ET). The program provides the nations most comprehensive fellowship experience at the nexus of health science, policy, and politics in Washington, D.C. Each year, fellows are chosen through a highly competitive selection process. The selected fellows leave their academic settings and professional practices to spend a year in the nations capital. A threemonth orientation program is followed by a nine-month assignment in which fellows work in either a congressional office or the executive branch. Work assignments are supplemented throughout the year with health policy leadership development activities and media training. Read More Programs Progress

Foundation Focus
We now live in a thoroughly digital world. Practically everything we do depends in some way on knowledge and information weve acquired online. For those of us in health and health care, the implications of this technological and cultural revolution are vast. The Web is the primary source people turn to for information on health and health care. And mobile devices are now the most popular tools for accessing that information. Its a challenge just to stay current with the technology, let alone with all the content. How can we do it? One way that RWJF is keeping in step is by unveiling a completely redesigned rwjf.org a portal that makes the Foundations rich storehouse of information on health and health care easier than ever to search and access. The site, launched in September, delivers this information intuitively by topic and offers visitors many ways to find exactly what they need. This means that you can now use rwjf.org to quickly find what people in RWJF program teams outside Human Capital are accomplishing in the areas that interest you most. Click on prevention, for instance, and you can learn about Better Education = Better Health, RWJFs NewPublicHealth National Prevention Strategy series; read a study from Health Affairs finding that prevention improves health while lowering health care costs; interact with a U.S. map showing the prevalence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and asthma in every state; and much, much more. The site isnt only easy to navigate; it also presents data in brief, accessible chunks, so you can see highlights from a study or report before deciding whether to read more. You can customize and visualize facts and figures on dozens of topics

using the RWJF Data Hub. With more social components than before, rwjf.org can also connect you with others who share your passion about improving the nations health. And did I mention that theres a mobile version, too? I hope youll visit the site and learn how it can serve you and your work. And please do get involved by contributing directly: your posts and comments are invited on the Human Capital Blog and elsewhere on the website. Youll find that, while it has a new look and greater usability, the redesigned rwjf.org remains focused on the Foundations mission-critical work: advancing knowledge about the countrys most pressing challenges in health and healthcare. Your projects and discoveries in Human Capital, and those of grantees in RWJFs other program areas, are what has always made rwjf.org an invaluable resource, and theyll continue to do so. Because even during revolutions, the most important things remain the same. Best regards, Linda Wright Moore Senior Communications Officer

Research Roundup
Cross-Program In a Perspective published in the August 23 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Clinical Scholar Gordon Sun, MD, (13) and Physician Faculty Scholar Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, (09) describe the tenuous state of medical research funding in the United States. The authors also offer a defense of the economic potential of U.S. medical research, as well as a summary of policies in five Asian countries that are using biomedical research as a scientific and economic stimulus. Achievements & Accolades

Community Health Leaders Dana Harvey, MS, (10) was honored during the week of September 11 by the White House as a Champion of Change for strengthening food security. Harvey, executive director of Mandela MarketPlace in Oakland, Calif., appeared at the White House to discuss her efforts to bring healthy food options to underserved communities. I couldnt be more humbled and honored than by being recognized by the Obamas, Harvey told the In Oakland Blog. I actually cried on my panel because its very emotional. Each week, the White House honors and invites individuals who are doing extraordinary work in their communities to the White House to share their ideas.
