CSE 4520/5420 Wireless Networks and Protocols Homework3 1) Problem Definition: In this homework we study the wireless network

design. In particular, we concentrate on the design of access network for the cellular networks. We investigate on how to convert the existing TDM network to IP network in the core and study the benefits of cost reduction and improve availability. 2) Description of the 2 configurations: Configuration-1: Fully star-Traditional network In the traditional network configuration we have all the BTSs connected to the BSC through a chain of Central offices (CO). Frame selection is done at the BSC. The BSC has the selection and distribution unit (SDU). BTS are located in the tower.BTS and BSC are connected using T1 links. Voice or data use one DS0 channel at a time.

Configuration-2: Star connection of wireless Routers to BTS In this type of network, the wireless router (WR) takes care of the switching and calls processing. This bunch of WRs is further connected to Edge Routers (ER). All WR-ER links are assumed to be DSL links. In general there will be a ER for every bunch (cluster) of WR and each ER is connected to the adjoining one and also connected to a BTS of the adjoining bunch.

3) Configuration-1 Traditional Network- Fully Star

4) Approximate Distances between BTSes :

BTS 1-2 1.4 km BTS 1-7 1.8 km BTS 2-3 1.4 km BTS 3-4 1.4 km BTS 4-5 1.4 km BTS 3-8 > 1.8 km BTS 4-8 > 1.8 km BTS 13-8 1.6 km

5) Assumptions: 1. I assume that the Central Office(CO) is in Denton. 2. The above mentioned distances are the approximate distances between BTSes. 6) Given: BSC is in Dallas. So the approximate distance between Denton and Downtown Dallas is approximately 35 miles from the Central Office (CO). Channel termination cost T link (T1) = $150. Fixed cost of the link is Flink (T1) = $50. Cost per Mile distance is Mlink (T1) = $15. Given Available spectrum = 100MHz. Band width needed per user = 30 KHz. Total number of base stations (NBS) = 16 Average distance D = 35. The formula used to calculate the cost for traditional network: CT = NBS (Link= T1 or T3 NLINK (2.TLINK+FLINK+MLINKD)) Where NBS = Number of base stations (BTSes). NLINK = Number of links of type T1 or T3. TLINK = Termination cost of the link. FLINK = Fixed cost of the link. MLINK = Cost per mile. I lease one T1 cable from each BTS to the Base Station controller (BSC). CT = 16*(1*(2*150+50+15*35))) = 16(300+50+525)) = 875*16 = $14000. So that the total cost required for the traditional star network is $14000.

Configuration-2: Star connection of wireless Routers to BTS

Since the no of base stations are 16. I have taken frequency reuse factor as 4. So number of clusters = 4 Number of base stations per cluster = 4 Cost of the WR network: CM=0.25 NBS(NBS-2)CFixed-Link-Cost+ NBS(Link T1 or T3 N*LINK(TLINK+FLINK+MLINK D)) CM= 0.25*16*14*50 + (4*4(150+50+15*25)) = 2800 + 16 * (575) = 9200 + 2800 = $12000

7) Plot showing the number of cost vs No of subscribers

Star Mesh Cost

Simultaneous Users

8) Conclusions: 1. The cost of each the mesh network is lesser than the cost of the Star network. 2. Also the signal availability is much better in mesh network than star network.
