Editor in Chief: Directed staff of 273 at iconic New York City newspaper and website fourthlargest circulation in U.S. -- in countrys most competitive media market. Repositioned the Daily News as the community paper for New York City, and bannered it as New Yorks Hometown Newspaper. Reconnected brand with its outer-borough roots and historic urban voice by adding new features, beats and columnists, reordering news and local pages, adding color and graphics, strengthening local report, headlines and layout while instituting top-to-bottom culture of enterprise. Inspired staff to do its best work while injecting new energy into newsroom, paper and website. Presided over small rise in print circulation during first year that was snuffed out by price increase. Brought sweeping change to a hidebound, traditionalist organization. Devised and instituted first-ever initiative to converge print and web staffs and create universal, platform-agnostic copy and layout desk. Overcame formidable cultural and staffing obstacles to re-engineer all newsroom workflows, making them digital-first while implementing new content management system. Fostered the growth of social media to engage readers, increase audience and enrich local news report. Tweeted frequently myself and hosted monthly live web chats in addition to regular reader breakfasts and neighborhood meet-and-greets as part of community outreach program. Brand rose from 7th largest to 4th largest circulation in U.S. including digital sales. Monthly page views zoomed from 126 million to 196 million during same period; unique visitors from 16 million to 20 million. Fostered new era of cooperation among siloed editorial departments and smashed long-standing walls between editorial and advertising, digital and production departments in order to achieve better overall financial results and new sense of purpose and teamwork. Managed staff through three painful rounds of downsizing over 16 months that cut $8 million from $44 million newsroom budget, reduced staff by 32 jobs from a peak of 305 and eliminated millions in freelance, independent contractor and other costs. Hired, fired and trained key editors and columnists; ran daily news, planning and enterprise meetings; chose stories, angles and art, suggested designs and wrote headlines and subheads for page one presentation every night.
