ASSIGNMENT NO. 1 I. Chemical Process Industries

CPI is an industry wherein the raw materials undergo chemical conversion during their processing into finished products, as well as (or instead of) the physical conversions common to industry in general. In the chemical process industry the products differ chemically from the raw materials as a result of undergoing one or more chemical reactions during the manufacturing process. The chemical process industries broadly include the traditional chemical industries, both organic and inorganic; the petroleum industry; the petrochemical industry, which produces the majority of plastics, synthetic fibers, and synthetic rubber from petroleum and natural-gas raw materials; and a series of allied industries in which chemical processing plays a substantial part. The chemical process industry comprises the companies that produce industrial chemicals and other useful products with the help of different unit operations and unit processes. It is central to modern world economy, converting raw materials (oil, natural gas, air, water, metals, and minerals) into more than 70,000 different products in the world. While the chemical process industries are primarily the realm of the chemical engineer and the chemist, they also involve a wide range of other scientific, engineering, and economic specialists. II. Examples:

The Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) includes major processing plants for organic and inorganic chemicals, industrial gases, petrochemical complexes, plastics producers, paints and pigments, coatings, and detergent manufacturers. a) Inorganic and Organic Chemical Producers - Major companies engaged in the production of dyes, pigments, acids, compounds, and specialty chemicals. Producers of olefins, alcohols, ethylene and ethylene-based chemicals, polymerization, cyclical compounds, and solvents.

b) Industrial Gas Producers - Manufacturers of hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and other industrial gases from air separation processes. c) Agricultural Chemical Industry - Bulk liquids and solids (granular, powder) agricultural product producers, including fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and intermediates, such as urea, ammonia, nitric acid, and ammonium nitrate. d) Detergents and other Household Product Producers Manufacturers of soaps and detergents, cleaners, bleaches, disinfectants, and surface agents. Personal use products, such as deodorants, hair sprays, cosmetics, and liquid and bar soaps. e) Plastics, Rubbers, Fibers, and Resins Manufacturers Companies performing compounding or extrusion and molding operations for the production of raw materials in pellet, billet or fiber form. f) Painting and Coating Producers - Manufacturers of pigments, coatings, solvents, lacquers, enamels, stains, and varnishes for finishing. g) Producers of Other Chemicals - From explosives to inks, dyes, glue lubricants, fire retardants, and chemical preparations. h) Alkalies and Chlorine - Producers of caustic soda, soda ash (not produced at mines), chlorine (compressed or liquefied), carbonates (potassium and sodium).
