Mayor: Life
back to normal
by mid-week
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Tabernacle Sun
Tabernacle last week was be-
ginning the cleanup following the
strong winds and rain Hurricane
Sandy brought.
According to Mayor Richard
Franzen, all operations were
under control within the town-
ship, and life around the town-
ship had returned to normal by
mid-week.
The Office of Emergency
Management, directed by Colonel
William Lowe, has done a fantas-
tic job. He coordinated and direct-
ed the responses of the township
Road Department, Rescue Squad,
Fire Company and CERT to any
emergency situations. They oper-
ated out of the Emergency Servic-
es Building 24-hours a day begin-
ning early Monday, Oct. 29, said
Franzen.
Issues in the township includ-
ed downed trees, wires on road-
ways and minimal flooding. Addi-
tionally, there were no injuries,
deaths or motor vehicle accidents
reported through the course of
the storm.

Addiego issues minimum wage statement
Senate Labor Committee mem-
ber Dawn Marie Addiego issued a
recent statement following the
Oct. 22 public hearing on SCR-1, a
constitutional amendment rais-
ing the minimum wage and man-
dating future increase based on
inflation.
Amending the state constitu-
tion to achieve guaranteed annu-
al minimum wage increases, re-
gardless of unknown economic
conditions that employers will
face in the future, is irresponsible
and inflexible economic policy.
As elected officials, we ought
to be considering the realities
faced by everyone job creators
and workers alike and making
decisions that are most respon-
sive to the economic climate at
that time. Writing minimum
wage policy into the state consti-
tution takes away our ability to
respond to changing conditions
in a way that is most likely to cre-
ate jobs and grow our economy.
A minimum wage increase is
of little comfort to those who lose
their jobs as a result.

Tabernacle was very fortu-
nate; a lot of trees came down.
None of the trees hit houses, but
some hit power lines, said Lowe.
According to Lowe, at the
height of the storm there were
approximately 2,800 residents
without power.
According to Franzen, due to
the large number of tree limbs
that fell during the storm, the
township will offer a special
brush pickup over the next sev-
eral weeks. Township manager
Doug Cramer will announce a
new schedule via the township
website with details about the
pickup.
We are very fortunate that the
damage was not worse. While the
high winds and heavy rain did
cause many power outages and
fallen trees, there was not any
major structural damage. When
you look at what has happened on
the barrier islands and in the
New York City area, you have to
be thankful that our local losses
were so much less severe, said
Franzen.
Tabernacles OEM activated
two reverse 911 calls to keep resi-
dents informed of Tabernacles
plans during the storm and the
brush pickup.
Through the storm, the
Pinelands Regional CERT team
ran the OEM, while the fire com-
pany was part of a strike, or
equal resources, team. The team
responded to a few calls in Sha-
mong along with a response in
Monmouth County, said Lowe.
Overall, the residents of Tab-
ernacle did very well, and it was
proven, we got very little calls,
said Lowe.
According to a statement is-
sued by Burlington County, assis-
tance given was to the neighbor-
ing counties, specifically Atlantic
and Ocean. Ocean County had nu-
merous fires, and five local fire
companies dispatched fire trucks
to assist. Local units also sent
four marine rescue boats units to
assist in rescuing individuals.
Additionally, county shelters
took in 400 or more individuals
from both Atlantic and Ocean
counties. Of the people, 200 were
moved into an overflow shelter at
the Pemberton Campus of
Burlington County College. Most
of the other residents were
moved to the shelter at Fountain
of Life located in Florence.
The recovery begins in
Burlington County. But we are
not out of the woods, thousands
are still without power, and we
need to work expeditiously to
clear our roadways for safe pas-
sage. In the meantime, we will do
everything we can to help our
friends in neighboring Ocean and
Atlantic Counties. I know we still
have a long way to go, but our
county and local emergency man-
agement personnel and volun-
teers have done a great job of
keeping on top of this storm,
Freeholder Director Bruce Gar-
ganio said in a statement last
week.
If I were to say anything
about the people of Tabernacle, is
that they listened very well, said
Lowe. They prepped for the
storm, and so few people called
[OEM].

eterans Day traces its history
to the end of World War I.
Then known as Armistice Day,
Congress, in the mid-1950s, formally
made it Veterans Day. Its one of those
days of the year that has, or should
have, special meaning for every Ameri-
can.
The sacrifices made by the men and
women of the Armed Services are
well-documented. They protect the na-
tion every day. Without their service,
America isnt the land of the free.
We encourage everyone to not only
recognize veterans on this day, but also
to make a commitment to do some-
thing tangible in their honor.
There are numerous groups that
help veterans and their families, espe-
cially those who have fallen on hard
times. Volunteer for one of these
groups, or make a donation.
Or get involved in a different organi-
zation that is trying to better your com-
munity. Help to feed the hungry or ad-
vance research into a deadly disease.
Gather clothing and other items and
drop them off at a center that will use
them to help the less fortunate. Do
something to make a difference, to give
back to those around you who can use
a helping hand.
We are heading into the holiday sea-
son. Its the easiest time of the year to
get involved because there are so many
ways to give.
In the coming weeks, we invite
everyone who is holding a drive or
fundraiser to contact us with the de-
tails so that we can share them with
the entire community. Give us the days
and times, the drop-off locations and
the items requested, and well do the
rest.
And then we invite our readers to
jump in with generosity.
We can never say thank you too
many times to our veterans. We can
never fully repay them for what they
have done and continue to do for us.
But we can honor them by doing
what we can to make a difference in
our communities.

Burlington County Animal Shelter unveils Free Pets for Seniors
Burlington County senior citizens can
now have a free furry companion from the
Burlington County Animal Shelter.
Freeholder Mary Ann OBrien recently
unveiled the shelters Free Pets for Sen-
iors program, through which all county
senior citizens age 60 years and older may
adopt a dog or cat free of charge.
This program is imaged after the very
successful Free Pets
for Vets program that
OBrien started in January of this year.
It is well known that companion ani-
mals can help to reduce stress, depression,
anxiety and loneliness, said OBrien. We
are making it easier for Burlington County
senior citizens to provide animals in need
with a loving home while giving seniors a
furry companion.
The cost of adopting from the shelter is
anywhere from $45 to $100, depending on
the type and the age of the animal.
All animals are neutered
or spayed before being adopted out.
Seniors interested in adopting will need
to fill out an application form and show
proof of age and residency.
The typical waiting period runs any-
where from one to seven days, depending
upon the animal.
Anyone in the market for a pet should
consider the shelter, said OBrien.
Visitors are welcomed to walk through
the kennels, and acquaint themselves with
our occupants who are looking for new
and loving homes.
The animal shelter is located on Pioneer
Boulevard in the countys Westampton
complex, off Woodlane Road.
It has hours every day but Sundays and
holidays. The phone number is (609) 265-
5073.

everything for the week, said
Caroline Royston, president of
the student council.
Homecoming was broken up
into three separate components
the homecoming dance, where
students vote for their king and
queen, spirit week and the foot-
ball game at the end of the week.
This is the first year we paired
spirit week with homecoming,
said Erica Maira, student council
adviser and homecoming organ-
izer. It used to be paired with the
spirit carnival in the spring, but
the kids wanted it to feel like a
true homecoming.
The student government
changed its style to help revamp
homecoming. The student council
created four separate executive
chairs for each grade to help or-
ganize the homecoming festivities.
We added four more positions,
a liaison from each grade. They
go out to each homeroom each
Friday to tell them what their sta-
tus is, and check to see where the
homeroom is, said Maira. [The
game] was a culmination of all of
that.
The student council came up
with a theme for each grade. Sen-
iors were the 1960s, and the jun-
iors were the 1940s. The sopho-
mores chose the 1850s, and the
freshman class was the 1980s.
Spirit week, a week with desig-
nated themes each day, included
the theme the classes chose.
Monday was dress for success.
We encouraged every student to
dress up. Tuesday was crazy hair,
and Wednesday was their decade.
Thursday was college T-shirt day,
and Friday was upperclassmen
wear green, underclassmen wear
gold, said Royston.
The student council wasnt set
up to be a separate entity from the
student body, it was to bring the
school together, said Maira. I
think this year, it finally hap-
pened.
The students then attended a
pep rally dressed in green and
gold, and the finale of spirit week.
The pep rally gave me chills,
Royston said. Theres so much
school spirit.
Additionally, the students cre-
ated a seamless lip synching
video slated to be posted to
YouTube.
We had over 45 clubs, which is
about 300 kids who participated
in the lipdubbing, said Royston.
At halftime, the Golden Eagles
showed off their dance moves.
The cheerleaders performed a
routine before the band took the
field to play their Rocky Balboa
ensemble, complete with a boxing
match performed by the color
guard. Immediately following
was the banner parade with floats
decorated by decade, and a dance
created by each class.
The parade has never been to
that extent. I think each year its
just going to get better, said
Royston. Homecoming never re-
ally felt like a homecoming. This
year, it was awesome.
It was a true celebration,
said Maira.
