ASSESSMENT & TESTING

Assessment The Texas State Education Code requires all students who enter public institutions of higher education be tested for reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Test scores are used to place students in courses that are appropriate to their current level of knowledge in each of the three areas. They are not admission tests; no student is denied admission to Navarro College on the basis of test results. Students must take one of the state-approved assessment instruments (THEA, Quick-THEA, Accuplacer, or COMPASS) unless exempt for one of the following reasons (valid proof of eligible exemption must be provided to the Registrars Office before exemption/waiver can be granted): 1. Student holds an associates bachelors or graduate degree from an accredited Texas public college or university. 2. Student transfers to Navarro College from a private or accredited out-of-state institution of higher education and meets college readiness standards based on course work from that institution. 6. On or after August 1, 1990, student was honorably discharged, retired, or released from active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard, or service as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States. All students who are not exempt must take one of the approved placement tests prior to enrolling in classes. Several approved tests are administered by Navarro College including COMPASS, Accuplacer, THEA, and Quick-THEA. Selecting the placement test that is best for you depends on several factors and should be done in consultation with Testing Center personnel. Tests are given at scheduled times and pre-registration is required. Call 1 (800) NAVARRO or contact the appropriate Testing Center listed to the right. Students are encouraged to test a minimum of two weeks prior to registration to allow sufficient time for processing scores.
