The Man, The Myth: Ron Shenkman
O
ver 200 people recently gathered to
celebrate Ron Shenkman and his
many contributions to the cities of
Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and
Westminster. Ron has been actively involved
in these communities for over 45 years and
his leadership skills and wisdom were noted
by all present at the event.
Ed Arnold served as Master of Cere-
monies and remarked that he has known
Ron since 1966, when they became in-
volved with the Jaycees. He also noted that
not many people can lay claim to having
served as Mayor of both Fountain Valley
and Huntington Beach as well as having
served on the Huntington Beach Union
High School Board of Trustees. Many peo-
ple commented on how Ron is a mentor for
any one wanting to serve in public office and
Supervisor John Moorlach was quick to point
out that Ron is one of those people who
walks his talk!
In a video produced by Matt Liffreing, one
heard community leaders use words such as
influential, fair, genuine, compassion-
ate, mediator, balancing force, sense of
humor, family, to describe Ron. Although
some thought they might be able to roast
Ron, it was soon discovered that Ron is just
too darn good to roast in any way. As one
looked around
the room and
saw the many
past and cur-
rent elected
officials pres-
ent it was evi-
dent that there
was a lot of
history that
had come to
say thank you.
B e s i d e s
Rons work in
the communi-
ties, he will al-
ways be held
in high regard
as a leader in the
solid waste industry. As Chairman of the
Board of Rainbow Environmental Services
he has led the charge to make the world a bet-
ter place by emphasizing the importance of
recycling. He helped lead the development
of a state of the art material recovery facility
and has been instrumental in bringing recy-
cling education to every
school in Fountain Val-
ley, Huntington Beach,
and Westminster. Those
efforts helped the cities
Rainbow serves to ex-
ceed the mandated re-
quirement of recycling
50% of all trash and for
Rainbow and the City
of Huntington Beach to
become recognized as a
State Leader in Recy-
cling.
People in attendance
that day not only en-
joyed the wonderful
tropical atmosphere, the
great food provided by
Suzannes Catering and the entertainment by
the steel band, Pan-A-Cea, but everyone said
they felt a real sense of community and what
it means to live a life of giving. Ron
Shenkman acknowledged the many kind
comments and said that many of his accom-
plishments were the direct result of working
with so many wonderful people. In his re-
marks, he also thanked his wife, Judy, and his
family for always being there for him and en-
couraging him to be involved in the commu-
nity.
As the guests left the event, each person re-
ceived a bobble-head of Ron Shenkman as a
reminder of the person who works each and
every day to make our communities a better
place in which to live, work, and play!
Ed Note: Ron and I have been Mayors, we
both broke our shovels in the solid waste in-
dustry, we started a bank together...did Little
League together, served on numerous Boards
together but most important laughed together
about life. I've been honored over the years
to count Ron and Judy as friends and wish
Ron well as he retires to three days a week in
the office in stead of seven. Ron is a man for
all seasons, a person of character, charisma
and above all persona considerate of others
and truly a Man of Distinction.

THERE YOU HAVE IT... and remember,

A
seminary professor was vacationing with his wife in
Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
One morning, they were eating breakfast at a little restau-
rant, hoping to enjoy a quiet, family meal.
While they were waiting for their food, they noticed a dis-
tinguished looking, white-haired man moving from
table to table, visiting with the guests.
The professor leaned over and whispered to his
wife, 'I hope he doesn't come over here.'
But sure enough, the man did come over
to their table.
'Where are you folks from?' he asked in
a friendly voice. 'Oklahoma,'
they answered.
'Great to have you here in Ten-
nessee,' the stranger said... 'What do
you do for a living?'
'I teach at a seminary,'
he replied.
'Oh, so you teach preachers
how to preach, do you? Well, I've
got a really great story for
you.'
And with that, the gentle-
man pulled up a chair and sat down
at the table with the couple.
The professor groaned and
thought to himself, 'Great.. Just
what we Need.... Another preacher story!'
The man started, 'See that mountain
over there? (Pointing out the restaurant
window). Not far from the base of that
mountain, there was a boy born to an unwed mother.
He had a hard time growing up, because every
place he went, he was always asked the same ques-
tion, 'Hey boy, who's your daddy?'
Whether he was at school, in the grocery store or drug
store, people would ask the
same question, 'Who's your
daddy?'
He would hide at recess and
lunch time from other students.
He would avoid going in to
stores because that question
hurt him so bad. '
When he was about 12 years
old, a new preacher came to his
church.
He would always go in late
and slip out early to avoid hear-
ing the question, 'Who's your
daddy?'
But one day, the new
preacher said the benediction so
fast that he got caught and had
to walk out with the crowd.
Just about the time he got to the back door, the new
preacher, not knowing anything about him, put his hand on
his shoulder and asked him, 'Son, who's Your daddy?'
The whole church got deathly quiet.
He could feel every eye in the church was looking at him.
Now everyone would finally know the answer to the
question, 'Who's your daddy?'
This new preacher, though, sensed the situation around
him and using discernment that only the Holy Spirit could
give, said the following to that scared little boy..
'Wait a minute!
I know who you are!
I see the family resemblance now, You are a child of God.
With that he patted the boy on his shoulder and said, 'Boy,
you've got a great inheritance.. Go and claim it.'
With that, the boy smiled for the first time in a long time
and walked out the door a changed person.
He was never the same again.
Whenever anybody asked him, 'Who's your Daddy?' he'd
just tell them, 'I'm a Child of God..''
The distinguished gentleman got up from the table and
said, 'Isn't that a great story?'
The professor responded that it really was a great story!
As the man turned to leave, he said, 'You know, if that new
preacher hadn't told me that I was one of God's children, I
probably never would have amounted to anything!'
And he walked away..
The seminary professor and his wife were stunned. He
called the waitress over and asked her,
'Do you know who that man was -- the one who just left
that was sitting at our table?'
The waitress grinned and said, 'Of course. Everybody here
knows him.
That's Ben Hooper. He's governor of Tennessee!'
Someone in your life today needs a reminder that they're
one of God's Children!

O
ne of the most magnificent
museums in the United
States is nestled just west of
Legoland, above the famous flower
fields in this beautiful city in North-
ern San Diego County. Once you
enter the impressive 6,500 square-
foot, "hands-on" facility, you'll be in
awe, and in for an experience you'll
never forget.
The Smithsonian-quality, Mu-
seum of Making Music, founded in
1998 by the National Association of
Music Merchants (NAMM), is an in-
credible treasure that makes a lasting
impression on your senses through
huge murals and state-of-the-art
gallery displays, which take you
back in time, bring you to the present
and get you thinking about the fu-
ture.
You can select audio and
video clips featuring a vari-
ety of musicians, instru-
ments and their glorious
sounds over more than 100
years. You also can create
your own music by playing
several instruments--from
guitars to drums to a Slap-
eroo, a vertical, electric-
timed percussion
instrument, which produces
vibrations from a steel strap
making a unique sound.
"We have over 500 instru-
ments on display
and up to 80 clips
that help pre-
serve our musi-
cal heritage," said
the museum's B.J. Morgan. "We tell
the story of the people who created
the instruments and show the impor-
tance of them to our country and the
world. We offer concerts with musi-
cians from around the globe and we
have a variety of educational pro-
grams."
You'll learn how Dr. Paul Tanner
took the Theremin and developed the
Tannermin to create the unique
sound at the end of the Beach Boy
hit, "Good Vibrations;" how the fa-
mous Gibson company in 1908
modernized the Mandolin and made
it easier to play and more accessible
to the masses; the story of Ukuleles
from 1916 and their evolution to eas-
ier-to-play instruments; the Ricken-
backer, aluminum-cast "Frying Pan"
of 1934, so important in electric
pickup (turning the vibrations of the
string into electrical signals that can
be amplified); Steinway's military
olive drab "Victory Pianos" (sent to
the troops during WWII); a 1951
Fender "Nocaster" Electric Guitar
(you can actually play their Tele-
caster guitar); a Mellotron, like the
one the Beatles used for the flute
recording on "Strawberry Fields For-
ever," plus much, much more.
One of the most popular parts of
the museum is the interactive Inno-
vative Studio, that has six stations,
including drums, guitar, base and
keyboard. Each area has a touch
screen for lessons, turning on speak-
ers, playing solo or having a live jam
session. Each station offers the same
music.
What you'll really learn from this
incredible experience is how people
are always innovating and creating
new instruments off the ones already
in existence, like the Harpejji, an in-
s t r u m e n t
played by tap-
ping the
strings to produce a note. It has 16
strings covering 4 octaves. You can
actually try it out.
"The Sound of Sax" is a special ex-
hibit showing how Adolphe Sax cre-
ated the saxophone (1846 Patent)
while trying to fill a gap between
strings and base. While in the "1890-
1909" room, I really enjoyed hearing
the actual voice of John Philip Sousa,
then listening to his patriotic, leg-
endary "Stars and Stripes Forever."

away to visit this fantastic place.

unbelievable museum that has a

Nonsense Democrats

ancy Pelosi, and several
other prominent Demo-
cratic leaders, swarmed
about the steps of the Congres-
sional Building in D.C. in order to
rant and rave about what they re-
ferred to as The Do Nothing Con-
gress. The media salivated over
each word, capturing the acrimonious speeches on
film, in order to deliver them with complete bias to
the uninformed public. Republicans continue their
war on Women claimed Pelosi. Republicans re-
fuse to protect women from abusive partners de-
clared another. Of course, not a single member of
the media challenged these assertions, but that is an-
other article.
The media also failed to report that
Congress had every intention of once
again passing the eighteen year old Vio-
lence Against Women Act in the same
manner in which they had renewed this
act twice before, with bipartisan support.
Only this time around the Democrats ac-
tually refused to support the bill! Oh
what tangled webs we weave, When first
we practice to deceive (Sir Walter
Scott).
The Democrats demanded that the bill
include language to specifically include
Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Transsexual, and illegal
alien persons. This would require an additional
50,000,000 dollars. But of course! It costs a lot of
money to print up all those flyers to educate the em-
ployees and volunteers at the shelters where they are
turning away everyone but heterosexual women! Ac-
tually, the fact is, no one is being turned away based
on their sexual orientation or legal status. So why
insert this language and the additional fifty million
in funding? Clearly for political gain.
So all this pandering to the cameras with claims of
insensitivity and outright assaults against women on
behalf of Republicans was nonexistent. The delay
of the bill passing rested solely on the disingenuous
shoulders of the Democrats. Democrats were so ex-
cited about the opportunity to slam Republicans and
pretend to be doing something for Foreign Nation-
als (illegal aliens for the politically incorrect) and
the Gay community, that they were willing to risk
this bill being held up over nonsense.
This is a glaring example of the dishonesty and
outrageous steps taken to push an agenda. This
Administration is apparently so accustomed to
having their lies supported by the media they know
no limits, i.e. Libya, Fast & Furious. We may expect
our Presidents to fudge a little or even a lot but when
we must fact check our media we have sunken to the
lowest point in our history. The one thing we prize
and which has largely separated us from other Na-
tions is our
journalistic
f r e e d o m .
Sadly, that
freedom is
now being
twisted and
manipulated
by short-
sighted peo-
ple. What
does that say
about their view of the masses? That in order to elect
a President of their choice they will lie, deceive, fail
to report, and intentionally mislead the public? This
behavior is unethical and criminal. Opps, I did men-
tion earlier that that was for a later article.
If Obama cant work with Congress, for WHAT-
EVER REASONS, he needs to step aside for some-
one that can. Vote like your freedom and liberty
depend on it, because they do!

ote No on Yes is pretty much what it comes down
to in the General Election in 2012. While I applaud
and encourage active citizen involvement, the HB
Municipal Election 2012 was a hodgepodge of one liners,
endorsements and, to some degree same old BS.
Chamber of Commerce, where the heck did they come
from...all of a sudden after a quarter century of political
silence...they use a Howitzer to announce their entry into
local politics. Nothing wrong with that but why expose
simple everyday small, medium and large business
members to all that potential negative stuff when a sim-
ple political action committee could have carried the
water leaving the business of business pure and fo-
cused... and the self interest of politics left to the political
process and pundits.
Not a good maiden voyage for the local Chamber
seemingly loosing on their major issues of
both their Green Light candidates and their
pro -Measure Z obsession. It just baffles me
why they would jump in with seemingly no
life raft.
Then there are the Public Safety groups.
The population loves them...give me break
ever see a little old lady raising her cane to
a firefighter! Di-polar to the Chamber in
their pursuit of political gold medals...they
won two out of three City Council seats
among the three candidates they supported
and apparently prevailed with their position
on Measure Z.
And get this...did you see their campaign
mailers...every one carried a Badge or traditional Fire-
man's hat and they put their Association names up front
and in the reader's face...as proud as peacock. Who
wouda thought? I became a believer...I was on the side
that the badge, etc...would not necessarily add to the
message acceptance. I admit I was wrong.
Then there were the PAC's (political action commit-
tee's). The current Mayor lead an effort for two council,
hopefuls and a YES position on Measure Z and the Assem-
bly candidate from Los Alamitos. So far, Measure Z is a
No and two of the three leaders apparently winning in the
council race have a Public Safety stamp
of approval. The local candidate
for Assembly from Hunting-
ton Beach seems to have
snatched the prize. All
the Candidates that
were supported by
them were good peo-
ple, qualified, char-
acter, integrity, etc.
Same with the Pub-
lic Safety side.
Two former May-
ors of HB were in the
race and they seemed to
have won as of the time of
this diatribe. Wow...that's
Change! The other apparent winner is
a soon to be retired LA Police Officer. Go figure!
Neither major political party can claim a victory locally,
the business group did not prevail, strongly endorsed and
favored conservative candidates did not seem to
prevail...so who won?
Well, that question will remain unanswered for some
time as the two veteran politicians return to office with
the new kid on the block and we'll see if the system
worked or not.
I'm disappointed in at least one candidate that did not
win because I felt strongly that he would be a shining star
and very independent of the usual politics in town. As well,
I am sure you had your horse in the race as well.
It's a democracy...well, a Constitutional Republic..the
best form of government in the world today and we'll have
to wait and see if money rules, or personality wins or being
on message brings home the bacon.
Chamber, I've been on and off your Board for 20 years,
the President of a Chamber, a director of at least 3 others...
form a PAC and keep your members out of the fray. Please.

perience in public service to
the Seal Beach Police De-
partment. Commander
Stilinovich has spent his en-
tire career with the Long
Beach Police Department
and has served for the past
five years as a Commander,
and currently serves as the
Gang and Violent Crimes Division Commander. His assign-
ments have also included Patrol South Division Commander
and Training Division Commander.
Joe has a proven track record of leadership in the areas
the Council and I heard were most important to our commu-
nity, our employees and our strategic partners, said City
Manager Jill Ingram. He has a wealth of experience and I
am extremely confident he is capable of advancing the goals
and objectives of the Citys stellar police department and the
Seal Beach community.
Mayor Michael Levitt also commented, stating, I believe
that we have found in Commander Stilinovich a chief of po-
lice that not only has the professional qualifications, but the
personal attributes, demeanor, interests, and community
spirit that will make him an excellent fit for this very impor-
tant position in Seal Beach."
Commander Stilinovich has a Bachelors degree in Busi-
ness and a Masters degree in Emergency Service Adminis-
tration both from California State University, Long Beach.
He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, West Point
Leadership Program, Sherman Block Supervisory Leader-
ship Institute, and received the California Peace Officers As-
sociation Professional Achievement Award.
"I am very honored and humbled to have been selected
by City Manager Ingram to serve as the chief of police for
the Seal Beach Police Department. Policing is a people
business and Seal Beach is known for being a close knit,
supportive community. I am excited to work with the com-
munity and entire City family. The Seal Beach Police De-
partment is a strong, well respected organization. My goal
is to keep the Department moving forward while ensuring
we are responsive, approachable and transparent to the
community we serve.

he City of Huntington Beach Historic Win-
tersburg Preservation Task Force will host
the Nov. 17 and 18 Orange County premier
of the film, Lil Tokyo Reporter. The Lil Tokyo Re-
porter cast includes Academy Award winner Chris
Tashima (Visas And Virtue), television star Keiko
Agena (Gilmore Girls) and Eijiro Ozaki (Letters
From Iwo Jima). Lil Tokyo Reporter is a narrative
short film inspired by the life of historic newspaper
publisher, Sei Fujii, who was known by Orange
Countys pioneer Japanese community.
The film will be screened at the Regency Theater
(Warner Avenue and Beach Boulevard) at 5 p.m.
and 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, and at 11:30 a.m. and
12:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18 ($9, $7 discount for

n Monday, November 12th, join the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9557 & Ladies Auxiliary and Girl Scout
Troop 327 as they celebrate American patriotism and honor our brave military and veterans at the annual
Fountain Valley Veterans Day Ceremony. This free event will take place at 10:00 a.m. at Veterans Park, 17635 Los
Alamos (next to the Fountain Valley Library).
This years event includes a patriotic ceremony honoring our military, with Vietnam Veteran, James May, as the
inspiring keynote speaker. Participation in the program along with the
VFW Commander David Harker and Auxiliary President Laura Cher-
mak will be Congressman, Dane Rohrbacher, Fountain Valley Mayor
John Collins and other Council members along with Girl and Boy
Scouts Troops and Police Explorers.
Glenn Grandis, President of the Fountain Valley Community Foun-
dation and Stacy McCartney, representing the Citys Recreation and
Community Services Division, will present the Honored Heroes ban-
ners to the families of these active military personnel. These banners
highlighting residents who have been active in the military this past
year have been displayed around Fountain Valley since May to show
support of these great men and women. This was the first year this pro-
gram has been offered and it will be offered each year when banners
are displayed between May and November.
Buddy Poppies will be distributed to raise funds for the veteran programs and there will be a food drive to
collect Pop-Tarts, beef jerky, granola bars, and/or tuna kits our troops. Following the ceremony, there will be pa-
triotic crafts and games for all ages. Activities and complimentary refreshments will be available until
noon.

he Huntington Beach Downtown Business Im-
provement District is inviting young artists to help
decorate downtown with holiday spirit. Children,
ages twelve and younger can submit original illustrations
based on the theme: My Holiday Wish. Entries will be
displayed in downtown businesses through the month of
December.
Many prizes will be awarded. One Grand Prize Winner
will be selected to be a Special Guest at the Tree Light
Ceremony. This winner will help welcome Santa Claus
and assist with the actual lighting of the tree on Sunday,
November 25th.
The Tree Lighting Ceremony marks the start of Miracle
on Main Street, a month-long celebration in Huntington
Beach Downtown. Free entertainment, hot cocoa, and
cookies are all part of the festivities, from 5pm - 7pm.

d love to
give the
NCAA the
benefit of the
doubt, and not
because I care
about the hundreds of overpaid bureaucrats en-
sconced in their cushy offices in Indianapolis.
They could all join the millions of unemployed
and underemployed in this coun-
try and I wouldnt shed a tear on
their behalf. If that should hap-
pen, some of those righteous, self-
serving individuals might even
find a way to make a positive con-
tribution to society.
My concern is for the millions
of student-athletes who are abused
and threatened by the very indi-
viduals who falsely claim to have
their best interest at heart.
Through their administration of
confusing and archaic bylaws,
rules, policies, procedures and agreements, the
NCAA and its member institutions serve to ac-
complish nothing that benefits student-athletes
that they would not otherwise receive if the
NCAA ceased to exist. But unfortunately, that is
unlikely to happen anytime soon. In fact, like any
bureaucracy, the NCAA continues to pass new
and more confusing rules of operation.
Thats exactly what the governing body did last
week when, with much fanfare, it adopted new
legislation touted to increase accountability for
schools and coaches. When it becomes effective
on August 1, 2013, the new, four-tier system of
infractions will replace the existing two-tier
structure. Under the current system, violations
of the 400-plus page rulebook can only be clas-
sified as major or secondary. That has led to
some minor infractions being lumped in with se-
vere ones. Think a traffic violation being classi-
fied the same as armed robbery. The new system
allows the NCAA to classify violations from
most egregious, the worst violations, to minor
or technical.
The new changes also attempt to impose
greater accountability on coaches for violations
that occur in their program. Head coaches could
face suspensions ranging from ten percent of a
season to one full season for an egregious infrac-
tion committed by a member of their coaching
staff, unless they can prove they were unaware of
it. That sounds good in theory, but the out, al-
lowing the coach to prove ignorance of an infrac-
tion committed by an assistant, opens a door wide
enough for the guilty to escape liability.
Heres what the NCAA should have done if it
wanted to send a message of change. Revise the
rule book before addressing the infractions struc-
ture. Streamline it to make it smaller and less
confusing. Theres no reason why it should read
like the Internal Revenue Code.
Another goal should be the uniform application
of rules and punishment, something the NCAA
hasnt done a very good job of over the years.
Big name schools have generally received favor-
able treatment and the same can be said for insti-
tutions that dont contest the charges against
them. In other words, exercising your rights is
held against you.
Ignore the hoopla. The new legislation is just
the same old, same old.

ccording to The Bog...the Travel Blog...what you wear to the airport could get you
grounded:..."Featuring fresh takes and real-time analysis from The rules of in-flight
fashion are different from those on the ground. When you're sitting for hours in a
metal tube flying 35,000 feet in the air,
comfort trumps style. Wear an
outfit that keeps you
cozy and relaxed,
and you'll
likely appear
more chic
than the trav-
eler struggling
with heavy bags
in four-inch
stilettos or the
one sweating in
too-tight synthetic
fabrics. To look and feel
your best while jet setting, avoid the following
in-flight fashion faux pas.
Uncomfortable Shoes
This one seems obvious. Still, I've yet to board a plane without spotting at least one flyer
tottering down the aisle in pumps. A good pair of comfortable shoes will make it easier for
you to hoof it around the airport and sprint to the gate if you need to make a connection.
Furthermore, wearing your bulkier shoes instead of stashing them in your suitcase and
donning sandals or stilettos will free up some roomand some weightin your checked
or carry-on bag.
Complicated Shoes
Look at these boots. They're the nightmare of every in-a-rush business traveler
who must stand behind you as you undo myriad straps and laces. Wear simple slip-
on shoes or sneakers when flying, as you'll have to take them off in the airport se-
curity line.
Fabrics That Don't Breathe
Shun any fabrics that lack breathability, such as nylon or leatherette. Add your rubber
rain coat or waterproof jacket to this list as well. (Note, however, that some high-quality
waterproof jackets, like outerwear made from Gore-Tex, are quite breathable. It all depends
on what it's made of.) Less breathable fabrics hold sweat on the skin when it's hot as well
as prevent air circulation. You won't feel very fashionable sweating in too-tight, synthetic
clothes as your plane rests on the tarmac under the hot sun.
A foolproof way to find breathable clothes for the plane: Stick with moisture-wicking
active wear (I recommend Prana) or clothes sold from travel suppliers like Magellans,
which are designed specifically for travel.
Tight Clothing
Have you heard of deep vein thrombosis? Also known as DVT, this condition occurs
when dangerous blood clots form in veins. Those blood clots can lead to a pulmonary em-
bolism, which is potentially fatal. According to the University of Washington Medical Cen-
ter, sitting for long periods of time can increase the risk for DVT, and so can constrictive
clothing: "Avoid tight clothing, nylons, or socks (especially the type that are too tight at
the top and/or leave marks on your skin) that might restrict blood flow through veins."
Compression stockings are a good choice for travelers interested in taking further steps to
reduce the likelihood of DVT.
Complicated Clothing
Aircraft lavatories are tiny contrivances, about the size of a small closet or a very large
Manhattan apartment. So maneuvering in and out of your pants can be, well, tricky. (That's
why someone invented Claspies.) Lest you drop your wallet in the toilet or fall and smash
through the bathroom door, wear something that isn't likely to cause difficulties in the plane
bathroom. Avoid bodysuits or complicated wrap shirts or dresses, as well as long pants or
skirts that may graze the unsanitary (and often disturbingly wet) lavatory ground.
Contact Lenses
According to Frommer's, "The air in plane cabins is so dry (usually 10 percent to 20
percent humidity, sometimes as little as 1 percent, compared to the Sahara desert's 20 per-
cent to 25 percent humidity) that your health is challenged every time you fly." Contacts
can become uncomfortable to wear if your eyes dry out in the arid cabin, so either avoid
them altogether or bring a pair of glasses to change into.
Perfume
Avoid this one for the good of your fellow passengers. Strong-smelling perfumes,
colognes, body sprays, and so on shouldn't be worn in flight. Some passengers may find
your CK One offensive; others might suffer allergic reactions to synthetic fragrances. If
you really must smell of the finest department-store brands upon arrival in your destination,
pack a sample size and apply it once you land.
Thin, Warm-Weather Fabrics
The key here is layers. It's fine to wear lightweight clothing on a plane. It may even be
a smart strategy if you're flying to or from a sweltering climate. But planes are often very
coldand blankets aren't exactly freely distributed on many flights these days. Getting
warm? Remove a few layers, bundle them, and then use them as a pillow.
Bonus: The more layers you can pile on your body, the less clothes you need to pack in
your suitcase.
Offensive or Inappropriate Clothing
Carriers typically leave it up to flight attendants to judge whether passengers' garb is
inappropriate for wear in the air. So how do you know if your outfit is appropriate?
Learn from the past: Passengers have been removed from planes for wearing everything
from low-cut dresses to baggy pants to T-shirts splashed with expletives or offensive
(well, depending on whom you ask) political messages. If you can't wear it to church
or dinner with your mother-in-law, you probably shouldn't wear it on a flight. Read

We Need a Specimen

ture..."an unmanned space capsule car-
rying medical samples from the
International Space Station splashed
down in the Pacific Ocean Sunday,
completing the first official private in-
terstellar shipment under a billion-dol-
lar contract with NASA.
The California-based SpaceX com-
pany gently guided the Dragon into the
water via parachutes at 12:22 p.m., a
couple hundred miles off the Baja Cal-
ifornia coast.
Astronauts aboard the International
Space Station used a giant robot arm to
release the commercial cargo ship 255
miles up. SpaceX provided updates of
the journey home via Twitter, includ-
ing a video of the Dragon separating
from the ISS.
The supply ship brought back nearly
2,000 pounds of science experiments
and old station equipment. Perhaps the
most eagerly awaited cargo is nearly
500 frozen samples of blood and urine
collected by station astronauts over the
past year.
The Dragon is the only delivery ship
capable of returning items, now that
NASA's shuttles are retired to muse-
ums. Atlantis made the last shuttle haul
to and from the station in July 2011.
SpaceX more formally Space Ex-
ploration Technologies Corp. launched
the capsule three weeks ago from Cape
Canaveral, full of groceries, clothes and
other station supplies. Ice cream as well
as fresh apples were especially appreci-
ated by the station residents, now back
up to a full crew of six.
It's the second Dragon to return from
the orbiting lab; the first mission in
May was a flight demo. This flight is
the first of 12 deliveries under a $1.6
billion contract with NASA.
"It was nice while she was on
board," space station commander
Sunita Williams said as the Dragon
backed away. "We tamed her, took her
home and, literally and figuratively,
there's a piece of us on that spacecraft
going home to Earth."
She added to the SpaceX flight con-
trollers in Hawthorne, Calif.: "Con-
gratulations Hawthorne and thank you
for her."

Is Our Future
Dry or Wet?
I
n this months ar-
ticle there are two
terms that are un-
familiar to many
readers, so I
should define
them. First, the
groundwater basin
is an aquifer or
natural under-
ground water storage area that is underneath this part
of Orange County. A
recharge basin is a large
pool or pond that is filled
with water that is diverted
from the Santa Ana River or
the Groundwater Replen-
ishment System in Fountain
Valley. The water percolates
into the groundwater basin,
refilling it. Now, let us turn
to the article.
I never thought I could
get so excited about the
sight of pure water flowing
from a pipe into a dry reser-
voir or recharge basin, fill-
ing it for the first time. I
have to admit that knowing
this water represents in-
creased water reliability for
Orange County residents
gave me a sense of pride. The Orange County Water
District (OCWD) Board of Directors, has the re-
sponsibility of insuring the cleanliness and sustain-
ability of the vast groundwater basin that is so critical
to 2.4 million residents. OCWD owns a six-mile
section of the Santa Ana River from Imperial High-
way to Ball Road and operates a complex recharge
system of 21 recharge basins.
OCWD directors, staff, retail water providers, and
representatives from our local and federal legislative
offices gathered recently to dedicate OCWDs 21st
recharge basin. OCWD recently completed con-
struction of this new percolation basin, called Mi-
raloma Basin, in Anaheim. The new basin allows
OCWD to percolate up to an additional 6,000 acre-
feet of water, which is enough for nearly 50,000 peo-
ple. Dedicated in a short ceremony last month, the
basin took about 10
months to construct. The
13-acre site was purchased by OCWD and trans-
formed into a recharge facility that is approximately
10 feet deep.
This percolation basin is a vital addition to
OCWDs groundwater management system. Captur-
ing as much water as we can locally, enables the Dis-
trict to be less dependent on more costly imported
water supplies from Northern California and the Col-
orado River. It also guarantees that there will be an
adequate water supply for generations to come.
Miraloma basin is currently dedicated to receiving
water from the Groundwater Replenishment System
(GWRS), the worlds largest advanced wastewater
purification system for indirect potable reuse, located
in Fountain Valley. Although only recently put into
service, the Basin is yielding the highest measured
percolation rates among OCWDs 21 basins due to
favorable geology and ultra-pure GWRS water. To
address future water challenges, OCWD will con-
tinue to expand and develop its recharge system.

arious models of Huffy, Iron Horse, Mon-
goose, Northwoods, Pacific, Razor and
Schwinn bicycles have been recalled
by Meijer Inc., of Grand Rapids, Mich. Pedals
on the bicycles can loosen or detach during
use, posing a fall hazard to the rider. There
are 29 reports of pedals detaching or coming
loose during use, including 16 reports of
minor injuries. This recall involves two-
wheeled youth and adult Huffy, Iron
Horse, Mongoose, North-
woods, Pacific, Razor<
and Schwinn bicycles
measuring 20 or
more. They were as-
sembled on site at
Meijer stores by
Serv-U-Success of
Grandville, Mich.
The bycycles were
sold between March
2012 and August 2012
and have a Serv-U-Suc-
cess assembly stickers writ-
ten in green marker. The
Serv-U-Success assembly
sticker is located on the bot-
tom of the bicycle frame between the pedals or on
the back of the frame facing the rear tire. A full

The bikes
were sold ex-
clusively at
Meijer stores
in Michigan,
Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky from March
2012 through August 2012 for $60 to $300. Bicy-
cles sold at Michigan Meijer stores in Cadillac,
Gaylord, Petosky and Traverse City are not in-
cluded in this recall. Consumers should immedi-
ately stop using the recalled
bicycles and return them to
any Meijer store for a full
refund or a replacement
bicycle of the same type
and value. Consumers
will also receive a $10

Whats the latest on
the proposal to turn
parts of the Northern Forest
in Maine into a big national park?

The idea of turning a large chunk of forest in central Maine
into a national park dates back at least 150 years when Henry
David Thoreau himself called for making the region a na-
tional preserve in essays about his travels through the area
via foot and canoe in the 1850s. To this day most of the areas
in central Maine that Thoreau visited are still primarily un-
developed save for intermittent timber extraction.
But recent changes in land ownership there are worrying
ecologists. The non-profit RESTORE: The North Woods has
been carrying the torch for creating a Maine Woods National
Park and Preserve for 20 years and reports that, between
1994 and 2005, the share of forest land in Maines 9.3 mil-
lion acre Unorganized Territory owned by timber companies
dropped from 59.2 to 15.5 percent while that owned by in-
vestors grew from 3.2 to 32.6 percent. RESTORE is con-
cerned that this dramatic change positions the region for a
real estate gold rush. A huge development already planned
for the shores of Moosehead Lake in the region is just one
example of the kinds of changes afoot that could decimate
the regions wilderness qualities.
RESTOREs proposal, first aired in 1994, calls for setting
aside 3.2-million acres surrounding Baxter State Park (home
of Maines tallest peak, Mt. Katahdin, and the northern tip
of the Appalachian Trail) as a national park. Bigger than Yel-
lowstone and Yosemite combined, the proposed park would
safeguard thousands of
miles of rivers and
streams while provid-
ing unfragmented
habitat for wildlife.
According to RE-
STORE, there are no
significant chunks of
undeveloped wilder-
ness anywhere in the
Northeastern United
States and that such a
large park is needed
to protect wildlife
habitat on a landscape
scale to allow for
adaptation in the face
of unprecedented cli-
mate change. Also,
the proposed park
would ensure perma-
nent access for out-
door recreation and
support a diversified
and sustainable econ-
omy. Although RESTOREs campaign has the backing of a
majority of Maine residents, it has failed to gain enough trac-
tion to make it before Congress. Some blame local opposi-
tion, allied as the Maine Woods Coalition, for convincing the
states Congressional delegation not to push for the proposal.
A new proposal from Burts bees founder Roxanne
Quimby later rekindled the issue: In May 2011 she offered
to donate up to 70,000 acres she owns adjacent to Baxter
State Park for a new national park, along with a $40 million
endowment for park operations. And to appease those op-
posed to RESTOREs proposal, she offered a similar amount
of land for multiple-use, including hunting. Quimbys pro-
posal includes only lands she owns, and would create a much
smaller park than what RESTORE envisioned.
A few months after Quimby made her offer known U.S.
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and National Park Serv-
ice Director Jon Jarvis held a public listening session in
Millinocket, Maine. But then in February 2012, Maines
Congressional delegation convinced Secretary Salazar to
table the new proposal for the time being. So for now, the
fate of millions of treesthe veritable lungs of the North-
eastern U.S.and hundreds of wildlife species may just
hang in the balance.

Ill never forget the woman,
drenched in god-only-knows-
what-brand of perfume, who
came into the Belvedere tasting
room years ago, when I was pour-
ing Belvedere wines. She looked
at me from over her eye glasses. You know the
look head down just a bit, eyes now having
to look up over the rim. Her shoulders were
curved in a bit (body language, high self es-
teem built on inse-
curity). Her extra
long, very well
manicured index
finger nail was tap-
ping the wine list
on one particular
item. Tap, tap, tap,
tap, tap
She said in her
best holier-than-
thou voice Ill
have the Cab
Sauuv dragging
it out.
I was thinking to myself, Yeah, right,
lady whatever If you really knew what
you were doing, you wouldnt have had a
Chanel No. 5 bath this morning while I
pleasantly smiled at her.
This brings me to why I wanted to write this
brief one. While in Maine, and talking with
cousins, I was told about one wine Nazi that
one a cousin had come across in her life. The
Wine Terrorist was an older guy older than
my cousin (hence, his feeling of complete au-
thority over
her). He was
t errori zi ng
her, thinking
he was
teaching her
about wine.
Instead, he
made him-
self into
s o m e o n e
who made
wine any-
thing but
fun, com-
pletely uninteresting; in fact, it made her
doubt herself. Having only been loved in
ones life, a first encounter with abuse always
leaves one speechless, and wondering what he
or she has done wrong. Ive seen this more
than once in my life, and the reaction is al-
ways the same self doubt.
So, my cousin
spent a bit of time
doubting herself, in-
stead of finding
wine interesting and
fun. Believe me,
when things arent
fun something is
wrong.
I explained to her that the more one knows
about wine like the kazillion winemakers
that I know the more humble they become,
for the most part.
Knowing about wine is a process similar to
a lotus unfolding. Once the first layer is
peeled back, you realized that thats just the
beginning of ones ever-unfolding journey
And, the journeys really wonderful, not one
built on fear and intimidation.
Everyone who ever intimidates anyone else
about wine should be taken out to the wood-
shed and whipped within an inch of their
lives, and Im not into corporal punishment.
So, a word to the wise should be sufficient.
If you come across someone whos a wine
snob, you can measure what that person really
knows by watching the movement of an inch
worm, and just take everything with a grain
of salt, as far as that person goes.

A
number of environmental organizations
have also advocated taking many fish off
the menu. The large fish listed below are
just six examples EatingWell chose to highlight:
popular fish that are both depleted and, in many
cases, carry higher levels of mercury and PCBs.
1. Bluefin Tuna
In December 2009 the World Wildlife Fund put the
bluefin tuna on its 10 for 2010 list of threatened
species. The bluefin commands as much as $177,000
a fish. Bluefin have high levels of mercury and
their PCBs are so high that EDF rec-
ommends not eating this fish
at all.
2. Chilean
Sea Bass
(aka Patagonian
Toothfish)
Chilean sea bass has been fished to near depletion.
The methods used to catch them have also damaged
the ocean floor. EDF has issued a consumption advi-
sory for Chilean sea bass due to high mercury levels:
adults should eat no more than two meals per month
and children aged 12 and younger should eat it no
more than once a month.
3. Grouper
High mercury levels in these giant fish have caused
EDF to issue a consumption advisory. Groupers can
live to be 40 but only reproduce over a short amount
of time, making them vulnera-
ble to overfishing.
4. Monkfish
This strange fish resembles a catfish in that it has
whiskers and is a bottom dweller, but its light, fresh
taste made it a staple for gourmets. The fish is recov-
ering some after being depleted, but the trawlers that
drag for it also threaten the habitat where it lives.
5. Orange Roughy
This fish lives a long life but is slow to reproduce,
making it vulnerable to overfishing. As Seafood
Watch puts it: Orange roughy lives 100 years or
moreso the fillet in
your freezer might be
from a fish older than
your grandmother! This
also means it has high levels
of mercury.
6. Salmon
(farmed)
Most farmed salmon are
raised in tightly packed,
open-net pens often rife with parasites and diseases
that threaten the wild salmon trying to swim by to
their ancestral spawning waters. Farmed salmon are
fed fishmeal, given antibiotics to combat diseases and
have levels of PCBs high enough to rate a health ad-
visory from EDF.

The new Corvette will replace this
older model.
"An all-new 2014 Chevrolet
Corvette, the seventh generation of the
uniquely American sports car in six
decades, will make its debut January 13
on the eve of the North American Inter-
national Auto Show, General Motors'
Chevrolet brand says.
Eagerly awaited by auto enthusiasts,
the new Corvette - dubbed C7 by the
faithful but known to GM and its sup-
pliers by the development code Y1XX
- is widely expected to have a radically
restyled exterior, a more upscale inte-
rior, a lighter chassis, and a more effi-
cient engine and transmission.
There will be a six-month gap be-
tween the 2014 Corvette new C7 and
the current C6 version, so the company
can retool the Kentucky plant where the
iconic sports car is built. GM will stop
building the 2013 model in early Feb-
ruary, and is due to start producing the
2014 model in volume in July.
The first of the new C7 Corvettes is
expected to roll off the line in Bowling
Green on June 30 - 60 years to the day
that the first 1953 model was pro-
duced, according to two suppliers fa-
miliar with the automaker's plans but
are not authorized to speak on behalf
of GM.
The C7's formal unveiling in mid-
January also marks the anniversary of
the Corvette's debut in January 1953 as
a GM Motorama "dream car" concept
in New York. Since then, GM has built
and sold more than 1.5 million
Corvettes, although annual sales have
slowed in recent years as higher vehicle
prices, rising fuel and insurance costs,
and growing competition from Europe
and Asia have eroded its once fiercely
loyal owner base.
To rekindle interest in the Corvette,
especially among younger, affluent
buyers who tend to favor imported
brands, Chevrolet has completely over-
hauled the car for the first time since the
sixth-generation model was launched in
July 2004.
The result, according to chief engi-
neer Tadge Juechter, is "a truly all-new
Corvette. There are only two carryover
parts from the C6 used in the C7 - the
cabin air filter and the rear latch for the
removable roof panel." One of the crit-
icisms of recent Corvettes has been
using interior parts and pieces from
lesser priced GM vehicles, something
that is not expected to be repeated on
the new car.
Chevrolet even has redesigned the
Corvette's familiar crossed-flags em-
blem for the 2014 model.
Other significant upgrades, according
to the supplier sources, include a
smaller, lighter aluminum V8 engine
displacing around 5.5 liters, advanced
features such as direction injection,
cylinder cutoff and variable valve tim-
ing, and a new seven-speed manual
transmission for improved fuel econ-
omy.
Prices, due to be announced next
summer, are expected to range from just
under $55,000 for the base model to
nearly $120,000 for the top-of-the-line
Corvette ZR1.
Chevrolet said dealers will continue
to take orders for the current model
until December.

Pickup trucks may cater to blue col-
lar roots but some require white collar
wages just to make the lease payment.
Does the world really need a $70,000
pickup?
Abso-trucking-lutely.
Just ask Gary Byrd, 45, of Forney,
Texas, who recently bought a Ram
Laramie Longhorn 3500 4 x 4 dually,
which has a starting sticker price of
$57,200.
But like many truck owners, Byrd
added lots of bells and whistles to his
truck.
"I use it for work but also as a family
vehicle," said the married father of
two. "I spend 50 percent of my time in
my truck, so my philosophy is to get
the best."
Indeed, Byrd, who owns and oper-
ates Pro Line Panel Systems in Kauf-
man, Texas, said he has a fleet of eight
Ram pickups, but got the premium
Longhorn for himself.
"It's really comfortable," Byrd
added. "The back is just as comfort-
able as the front, and I can still carry
all of my tools and stuff. My kids love
the DVD player as well."

very homeowner is looking to take advan-
tage of todays low rates. With mortgage
rates at record lows, they should be. Unfor-
tunately, some homeowners are experiencing the
negative effects of legislative reform in mortgage
lending. Its much more
difficult to qualify and
be approved for a loan
today than it has been
in the past. Even home-
owners with perfect
credit and plenty of eq-
uity are finding that
they may be challenged
to document sufficient
income to qualify for
the new loan under cur-
rent requirements.
For many homeown-
ers the biggest hurdle to
overcome is that if they
have been able to af-
ford the higher pay-
ment at their current
interest rate, common
sense would lead to be-
lieve that they will eas-
ily be able to afford the
lower payment at the
new lower rate. Unfor-
tunately utilizing such common sense is a preda-
tory lending practice. Lenders are required to
verify that a homeowner can document sufficient
income to qualify for the new loan, or they simply
are not allowed to make a loan to that individual.
Income qualifying is more difficult than it has
ever been. Debt-to-income ratios have been re-
duced, stated income programs no longer exist,
and even alternative documentation programs
have nearly been eliminated. This is especially
challenging for self employed individuals who
take advantage of the write-offs afforded them on
their income taxes. Although those write-offs limit
their tax liability, it also limits the income lenders
are able to use in qualifying for a loan under the
current requirements.
Anyone who finds themselves in this situation
shouldnt give up hope. Fannie Mae has a pro-
gram that allows liquid assets to be factored in to
the income calculation. Very simply, the math
takes the asset base and divides by 36
months. So a homeowner with
$100,000 in a money market or other
liquid account would have an addi-
tional $2,777.78 in qualify-
ing income that can be
factored in for the loan ap-
proval.
For homeowners who
have tried to refinance in the
past and fond their income
calculation was coming up a
little short, this could pro-
vide the difference
needed to push them
over the line and secure
an approval. For many
self-employed individ-
uals who thought these
low rates would never
be available to them, this
may be the good news
they were looking for.
As with every spe-
cialty program, there is a
catch. In this case its
simply that very few
lenders offer this pro-
gram. The good news is
that there are a few who
do. Do your homework
or find the right broker
or lender who has access
to this program and you
too can take advantage
of these record low
rates. Just make sure its
the Fannie Mae asset-
based program. There
are other lenders who
offer similar asset-based financing

leagues at the award winning Central Park Sports
