Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche

His Eminence Jigme Pema Thinley Namgyal is the 7th incarnate of Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche. He was born in 1966 in the holy valley of Tongshang Thrichu Gonpa in Eastern Bhutan, to Yab Tshering Gyaltsen and Yum Sherabmo. Rinpoche was recognised as the Seventh Namkhai Nyingpo by the Sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa. Consequently, in 1972, at the age of six, Rinpoche ascended to his predecessors throne at the Pema Shedrup Chholing (commonly called Kharchhu Dratshang) in Bumthang. At the age of eight, he received the Refuge Ordination and on two occasions the Long Life Empowerment from the Sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa. In the same year, he received the Kalachakra empowerment, teachings on the Bodhicharyavatra and many other major teachings from the Dalai Lama. Rinpoche received almost all of Nyingma teaching from his root teacher His Holiness Chabje Dilgo Khentse Rinpoche. It was upon the request of His Holiness that the Pema Samdrup Chholing was extended to a monastery. The Monastery now houses over 400 monks and nuns. In addition Rinpoche also presides around 20 temples spread throughout the country. Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche continues his intensive study of Buddhist philosophy with many masters and in the spirit of non-sectarianism has received teachings and transmissions from the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He has also transmitted his own special nyingma lineage called Jang Ter (Northern Treasure) teachings to other Lamas and Rinpoches. Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche has mainly concentrated on the care and training of the monks and nuns at his monasteries in Bhutan and on his own study and practice. He has given numerous teachings, empowerments and oral transmissions in Bhutan and abroad. The lineage The first Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche was one of the first seven monks ordained by Shantarakshita- Abbot of Nalanda University- in 8th century at the then newly founded Sam-ye monastery, first Buddhist Monastry in Tibet. The monastery was built under the patronage of King Trisong Deutsen. Shantarakshita and Siddha Guru Padmasambhava were invited by the King to help build the monastery. Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche was one of the twenty five principle disciples of Guru Padmasambava. Later Rinpoche became the root lama of the great King Trisong Deutsen. He was also one of the five close heart sons of Guru Padmasambava (Heart sons: King Trisong Deitsen, Khando Yeshi Tsogyal, Namkhai Nyingpo, Gyalwa Chogyang and Variotsana). History has it that Rinpoche revealed miraculous achievements at numerous occasions, such as: riding on the ray of the sun, turning pebbles into seeds

and leaving body imprints on rocks. Rinpoche passed away into parinirvana, without leaving the corpse behind, after serving sentient being for two hundred years. Subsequently, there were many successive reincarnations, such as treasure revealers Jangchub Lingpa Palgi Gyaltsen and Dawa Gyaltsen. However, it was not until the reign of the fifth Dalai Lama (16171682) that the tradition of naming the successive incarnation of Namkhai Nyingpo began. Thereafter, a permanent seat at Lhodra Kharchu, southern Tibet, was established. Since then the golden rosary of Namkhai Nyingpo lineage had been passed down in an unbroken transmission to the present and his enlightened activity has spread far and wide. It was the sixth Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche who eventually Program: Date 17th Jan 18th Jan 19th Jan 20th Jan 21st Jan 22nd Jan 23rd Jan 24th Jan

had to flee Tibet and go to Bhutan. He lived there for three years before passing to parinirvana.
