What distinguishes this school? Please particularly address any condition in the school or community or anything else that demonstrates a unique and compelling book need among the students in this school. Please tell us the schools story. Tell us the students story.
Our Title One school is in Athens, Ga in which 30% of the population is below the poverty line. A large part of our population is comprised of English Language Learners, Special Education students, and students who receive free or reduced lunch. Last year, our standardized test scores in science across the board, for students in all grades and subgroups, were extremely low. After reviewing our collection, we determined that some of our science materials are outdated but also do not cover all of the science standards covered throughout the year. We also have a need for different leveled texts due to the varied reading levels in our school as well as the fact that many science topics are taught at different grade levels. It is important to have content specific texts low enough to reach all of our readers, but it is just as essential to have higher level texts for our advanced readers and for teachers to utilize during instruction.

This answer is limited to 500 words. 31. The goals of the Laura Bush Foundation are to:(A) encourage and foster a love of reading,(B) support student learning, and(C) make books available to students who otherwise would not have access to them. Which goal or combination of goals does your proposal address?
In order to collaborate with classroom teachers and support their instruction and the learning objectives of the school, a library must be able to provide materials that are in alignment with those goals. Our goal is to give the teachers and students support towards reaching their

instructional goals by adding nonfiction texts that address relevant science topics and standards essential to their instruction.

This summary is limited to 100 words. 32. If you were to receive a grant of up to $5,000, how would you use it? In other words, what is your proposal? What is it that you want to do? Who and what would it benefit? Why? (In describing your proposal, please be sure of two things: (1) That you do not request anything other than books or magazines, and (2) that if your plan includes purchasing eBooks or any other electronic materials, be sure to tell us in what ways and how easily your students will be able to access them.)
My primary goal for this grant would be to purchase nonfiction books at varied levels for my collection so that the coverage of most, if not all, of the science standards for grades Kindergarten through fifth are addressed. I want to increase the coverage of science topic at appropriate level in my collection so that both teachers and students alike can benefit. The teachers would benefit by having access to a wide range of books on science topics that they can use for instructional purposes. The students would be benefit by having access to science books on their level in topics related to the instruction they are receiving in the classroom, whether they are accessing these books in their classroom, on their own, or for an assignment.

(In describing your proposal, please be sure of two things: (1) That you do not request anything other than books or magazines, and (2) that if your plan includes purchasing eBooks or any other electronic materials, be sure to tell us in what ways and how easily your students will be able to access them.) This answer is limited to 500 words. 33. What gave you the idea for this proposal? *
This year our school hired an academic enrichment teacher that all students in second through fifth grade see throughout the week. She addresses science topics that either don't receive enough time in the regular classroom, students are having difficulty with, or takes the topic above and beyond the standard required. They hired this teacher due to the standardized test score results in science and I knew that my library could be a part of this goal. That is why I want our collection to have the most coverage of science topics as possible.

This answer is limited to 100 words. 34. How were the specifics of the proposal developed? *
I determined the types of books needed in our collection by reviewing the science standards for kindergarten through fifth grade, talking with the teachers about their needs and experience with science instruction and scores in the past, and conducting an analysis of the books we did have in our collection that would address those specific standards.

This answer is limited to 200 words. 35. If you do receive a grant to implement your proposal, how will you measure and evaluate its impact on the students, on the library, on the school? * Since the standardized test scores in science were what brought our attention to our students' deficit in science, looking at these scores over the next couple of years would be a good indicator of whether the addition of these new science materials helped to support instruction. Another way I would determine the effectiveness of the addition would be by interviewing the teachers regarding their use of the materials in their instruction. Looking up and analyzing circulation records of the materials would also prove helpful in determining if they were being used to supplement instruction. This answer is limited to 250 words. 36. What is your schools Federal Employer Tax Identification Number? * (number only)
