1901: Theodore Roosevelt: Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far. West African proverb. o o o 1903: Hay-Herrn Treaty with Colombia: US offered $10 million outright & $250,000 annually to build canal in Panama. November 2nd, 1903: American gunboat Nashville arrives in Panama. November 4th, 1903: Panamanian rebels, with the help of U.S., achieve independence. Republic of Panama established.

1904 to 1905: Several European powers wanted to collect money owed by Dominican customs. o Roosevelt extends Monroe Doctrine by issuing a corollary, or proposition. U.S. = international police of Western Hemisphere.

1909: Taft continues Big Stick policies, however, uses diplomacy: Conduction international relations. o 1897 to 1914: Investment in Central American development increased by $72 million.

1900s: Stereotypes of Asians as the lawless hordes and the yellow peril. The Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions: Missionaries in China. 1899 to 1900: European powers and Japan agree to Secretary of State John Hays Open Door policy for China. o Territorial integrity: Abandon spheres of influence free trade (with China) for all.

1898: U.S. wins against Spain (for Cuba). o Teller Amendment: Promised Cuba complete and unconditional freedom. 1|Page

Emilio Aguinaldo: Filipino revolutionary leader, resisted American annexation. o 1902 to 1906: Guerilla warfare, however, more Filipino causalities. Albert Beveridge: [J]ust beyond the Philippines are Chinas illimitable markets. 1904: Russo-Japanese War. o 1905: Roosevelt earns Nobel Peace Prize for mediating a peace agreement between Russia and Japan.

1906: Japan protests against segregation of Japanese children in San Francisco schools. o o 1907: A Gentlemans Agreement: Roosevelt complies, however, regulates Japanese immigration to California. 1908: The Great White Fleet (16 U.S. battleships) arrive in Japan. Lol, wow. 1906: Roosevelt defused a crisis between Germany and France over Morocco. 1911: Taft arbitrated a dispute between France and Great Britain over Liberia.

Early 1900s: U.S. was often called upon to mediate disputes. o o
