Hartwick is one of the best at study abroad. Period.

J Term changes lives. What will it do for you?

Do more. Be more.

J Term Will Change Your Life

At Hartwick, we know how valuable study abroad is, because weve seen it in action. Ive been leading J Term experiences to South Africa since 1997, and Ive seen firsthand how those trips have affected my students. Being abroad helps you to appreciate your own circumstances; to be grateful and humble; to cherish your own family and communicate with them more. It helps you to think about what matters most to you, what you want, to choose a career and actually achieve it. You will develop social skills with other group members and with the people of the other culture; you will be able to interact successfully with members of other cultures. Youll develop confidence in yourself, courage, and pride because youve discovered that even though something always goes wrong, you can make it right. Youll understand that you have the ability to endure, to persevere, and succeed in difficult circumstances. Study abroad will inspire you to learn more and more on your own throughout your life, and it will help you put meaning into your life. During J Term, youll have the time of your life, and youll change your life. Once you go, youll never be the same.

Global
J Term will take you everywhere
Study abroad is a major component of J Term, and J Term is a major part of what we do at Hartwick. We reserve a month out of the year to focus on intense, indepth study. The kind that will change your perspective, and change your life. Many J Term programs take place in the farthest corners of the globeyoull meet the people, speak the language, and get up close and personal with what makes the place tick. Take a look at where weve been and where were going:
J Term 2013 (off-campus) Arizona, USA: Sustainable Public Policies in Arizona Bahamas: Island Biogeography Brazil: The Arts of Brazil England & France: Museums and Monuments of London and Paris England & Germany: The Psychology of WWII England: Social Work in Great Britain Ghana: Multicultural and Urban Educational Field Experience in Ghana Hawaii, USA: Geology and Natural History of Hawaii Hawaii, USA: The Psychology of Creativity Italy: Global Marketing in Italy Jamaica: Transcultural Nursing New York City, USA: Theatre in New York City Senegal: Language and Cultural Immersion South Africa: Change and Challenges Spain: Language Immersion Thailand: People, Animals and Plants of Thailand Ukraine & Czech Republic: Post-Communist Transition Vietnam: Education, Language and Culture J Term 2012 (off-campus) Chamber Music in Arizona Doing Business in China Natural History of Costa Rica Shakespeares England Theatre in England Irish Culture and Society Art and Architecture of Italy Transcultural Nursing in Jamaica Culture, Conservation, & Natural History in Madagascar Language & Social Justice in Peru Ecology, Culture, and Transformation in South Africa German Term in Vienna

My J Term experience was absolutely amazing. I traveled to South Africa, and we explored the country in so many ways. I got to pet a cheetah, talk to dozens of citizens, be within 20 feet of elephants and lions, and even had a wildebeest tibia thrown at me by a baboon. I still have that tibia today. The natural landscape of South Africa is something to which I will always yearn to return.

Life-changing
After J Term, youll never be the same
Hartwick students and alumni say their J Term experience changed their lives forever. It gave them a new perspective on the world, or helped them discover their own passion, career, and drive. Spending a month outside your comfort zone will do that. It will challenge you in new ways every day, and change you in ways you never expected.
Off-campus J Term programs are demandingmentally, emotionally, and, often, physically. Your faculty leaders, the students going with you, and past participants will work together to get ready. Prep meetings start in the fall. Some courses like Arizona: Sustainability and Uneven Development have an on-campus study component before travel; otherslike Contemporary Chinainclude language, culture, and arts coursework in the host country. J Term will ask a lot of you, so be ready. And be open. Ask any Hartwick student or alumnusjust one J Term experience and youll never be the same. While youre at it, ask them what to pack. Absolutely everyone will tell you one thing: dont forget your camera.

The Hawaiian Islands were constructed in the same way that I had witnessed with my own eyes, flow by flow, layer by layer. This fills my daily thoughts with ideas of just how much time it takes to construct a world so beautiful. I can say with confidence that as a result of Hartwicks J Term, I now live my life with a renewed view on just how vast the age of the Earth is; I no longer busy myself with the trivial worries of the smaller problems in life.

Experiential
J Term is about getting your hands dirty
During J Term you might gain clinical nursing experience in Jamaica and meet the challenge of providing culturally competent health care to individuals and families. Maybe youll begin to effect change when you work with NGOs (non-governmental organizations) in Ghana. Study in Madagascar, the only place where lemurs can be found, and home to two thirds of the worlds chameleon species, and six of eight baobab tree species.
Participate in religious rituals with the Qero people of Peru, the last remaining Inca community, and climb mountains to reach some of the worlds most important archaeological sites. Gain a new perspective on island biogeography in San Salvador when you snorkel to coral reefs, sea grass, and mangrove lagoon habitats.

Peru was the experience of a lifetime. I really learned a lot there. My oral communication in Spanish improved and I learned a lot of new vocabulary - but the best lessons were about life. I saw many things in Peru. We saw injustice and poverty. We saw people who were incredibly strong. We saw love. It is impossible for me to express everything that I learned in Peru. It is an adventure that I will never forget; my experiences will be with me always.

Valuable
J Term is much more than a trip
Yes, youll go places you never thought you would, and youll see things you never thought youd see. But dont expect a month-long sightseeing tour. In many cases, J Term is about learning first-hand of the struggles faced by our global neighbors, and working to help them improve their lives.
Whether its nursing in Jamaica, health advocacy in Thailand, or economic justice in Mexico, J Term often means gaining a real understanding of how other people live, and what it takes to try to fix the system. Once youre exposed to these cultures and issues, youll never be the same. Once you get a global perspective, it will inform your outlook for the rest of your life. At the same time, youll be showing future employers and grad schools that youve got a lot to offer. In todays competitive marketplace, experience is currency, and J Term is a pot of gold. Off campus, international, on campusevery J Term experience is an academic course, with grading criteria, and academic credit. It becomes part of your transcript, your resume, your credentials. The outcomes are both quantifiable and immeasurable.

We skipped the tourist attractions of Mexico. Professor Kate ODonnell got us right into the villages in Chiapas. She does economic solidarity work there, so she has connections with Jolom Mayaetik, a womens fair trade initiative. We were able to work directly with the Mayan textile weavers. Because they speak the indigenous Tzeltal and not Spanish, everything had to be communicated through two translators. I learned to distill my thoughts.

Deep
One month, one topic, serious learning
During J Term, Hartwick faculty and students dig deeper. When youre engaged with a topic on a daily basis, you get focused and you get deep. You really know what youre taking about, because youre spending all your energy on one intense month. Its really serious learning.
J Term is intense. The month of January is spent on one course and one course only. On-campus classes meet every weekday, taking full advantage of the extended time together for in-depth study, discussions, practice, and projects. Off-campus programs typically begin at Hartwick with academic and cultural preparation before the on-site experience begins. When youre able to really dive in, you never know what the results will be. Youll probably learn more than you thought you couldabout your course of study and about yourself.

J Term changed my direction. It showed me that I wanted to do physical therapy. Being with the people, helping them, let me see the difference I could make in someones life. I worked with a visiting nurse practitioner. She helped me understanding that the Akah of Thailand do not rest, they always go back to the fields; I helped her do health presentations. We demonstrated, in a culturally sensitive way, simple ways to prevent injury. I was inspired.

Essential
The best thing youve ever had to do
J Term is a requirement at Hartwick (every student must complete two J Terms during their four years), and thats because we take it seriously. Experiential learninggetting in the field or the lab and getting your hands dirtyis a crucial part of what we do. Thats because we know its the best way to learn.
When you combine in-depth study with global experience, something incredible happens. Thats why Hartwick alumni always list J Term as one of the most important parts of their academic career. Thats why they use words like life-changing to describe J Term. Thats why it matters.

I taught at Springbrook during J Term as an educational mini-practicum. It was a requirement, which turned into much more. My students were unique in so many ways and have a way of igniting a spark of passion within me that is unmatched by any other volunteering or work I have done. Because of my experiences, I decided to pursue a certification in special education at Hartwick, as well as a second masters degree in special education after graduation.

It doesnt seem that three and one-half weeks can change ones life, but I have seen it happen so many times. I firmly believe this chance to study in an area accompanied by the expertise of a professor well known to the students is an opportunity not to be missed.

Wendell Frye | Professor of German Frye led his 31st Vienna Program during J Term 2012. He estimates he has led nearly 900 students through the Austrian capital.
No matter where you go in life, youll never forget the experience abroad. Ive seen firsthand that its life-changing.

17

Applied
Learning means more when youre doing
Dont get us wrongtextbooks and classrooms are important. Theories are critical and sometimes scholarly work is spent with your nose in a book. But getting out of the academic halls and into the world is what were all about.
If youre a biology major, it might mean studying tropical biodiversity and conservation by living at field stations in the rainforests, cloud forests, and dry forests. Theres no better way to get to know biodiversity than to put yourself in the middle of it. If youre a theatre arts major, it means seeing shows in London or on Broadway. It means meeting the people who make them happen. It means thinking and talking deeply about what youve seen, how it was done, and why its important.

Jessica Spitz 14 | Education

We took what we had been learning in class and applied it to what we were doing and seeing. We werent just discussing a school play, we were critiquing Broadway.

Phenomenal
Experience something incredible
Theres nothing like J Termin-depth, in-the-field, in-country study with a small group (usually around 15 people) of diverse students. Almost all J Term programs are open to majors and non-majors alike, so youll get a mix of interests and talent no matter where you go.
Nearly every off-campus program is open to new students; a few are First Year Seminars just for freshmen. Somelike Geology and Natural History of Hawaiihave a course prerequisite offered in the fall.

Living in the middle of the rainforest. Surrounded by the sights, sounds, and aromas of this magnificent land. You couldnt experience that in a classroom. It was phenomenal. Living so simply, drinking in the world around me, allowed me the opportunity to get to know me. I learned who I had become. And in doing so I learned that I wanted something for my life other than being a researcher. And that is okay. I continue to pursue adventure every day.

Groundbreaking
Do real work in real places
At Hartwick, we place great emphasis on undergraduate students doing realworld research. At most schools, these are the kind of experiences that arent available until youre a graduate student. J Term programs often mean working closely with your professor in an exotic locale, turning up real data, solving real problems, and making real change.

Catherine Winters 14 | Environmental Chemistry

For my Food and Social Justice class last J-term, we had the opportunity to give back to the community by volunteering at a local food pantry. The material we covered in class and my experiences at the food pantry opened my mind further to the importance of the issue of food justice. Seeing first-hand how poverty can impact a persons health by preventing them from being able to afford healthy food was really eye opening and strengthened my interest in urban agriculture, which brings access to local and healthy food to food deserts.

23

Important
What you learn matters
In many cases, J Term programs are about the greater good. As you increase your understanding of the people and places of the world, youll also often work on solving critical issues that confront villages, nations, and the planet as a whole.
Yes, J Term is about taking a class that will teach you more than you thought possible. Its about gaining valuable experience that will serve you well throughout your career and life. Its also about getting out there and doing real work, inspiring real change, and making the world a better place. Hartwick gives you an opening. All you have to do it walk through it.

My J Term journeyworking an archaeological dig at Pigeon Creek on San Salvador Island in the Bahamasrepresented not only my first trip outside the US, but in fact my first trip on an airplane. The experience fueled a lifelong passion for exploring the world. During our dig, we uncovered many artifacts of the Arawak Indians. The most significant was a ceremonial jade hammer from Mexico. This was an important find because it helped prove the existence of previously unknown trade routes across Central America that included these tiny islands. I reflect on that hammer and its discovery often when I consider the challenges of global businessopening new markets, developing new ideas to expand our company, and finding new ways to operate when there is no proven path. What J Term taught meand what that hammer symbolizesis the value of exploration, of expanding your horizons, of being actively curious about the world around you. The journey I began with J Term is still taking me to new places today.

Intern Abroad
Take your international savvy to the next level and further customize your Hartwick education. Continue to broaden your understanding of and appreciation for other countries and other people. Impress graduate schools and future employers. Do an internship or independent/directed study abroad.
The steps are straightforward. Think and talk about your interests, your goals. Be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior in strong academic standing. Make professional connections through Hartwick faculty, staff, and affiliates in host countries. Complete the extensive application for international internship, and maybe apply for an international scholarship. Get ready for the experience of a lifetime. Recent international internship experiences for Hartwick students have been as diverse as the world we live in. Business Administration and Political Science double major Keisha Moore 12 studied industry and trade in Ghana. Biology major Ethan Stats 13 served as a biodiversity monitor for Operation Wallacea at Cusuco National Park in Honduras. Another Biology major, John Stuligros 13, lived in Kenya where he worked in hospitals and researched that countrys health care challenges. Spanish major Anne Wagner 13 explored womens rights and issues while living in Cusco, Peru, and working at La Casa de Acogida Mantay..

Scholarships
Choose one of the on-campus J Term courses and there are no additional required expenses. Tuition and room are included; the campus meal plan is an optional extra. Financial aid applies. Take one amazing, in-depth course. Develop great insights through concentration. Enjoy the snow on campus, and take in one of our enticing (and hair-raising) slopes.
Off-campus J Term courses incur additional costs. Most average $1,000, but those in the farthest corners of the globe can be more. Expenses include all travel, most or all meals, lodging, transportation on site, and excursion fees. Youll want to consider applying for one of Hartwicks generous scholarships dedicated solely to study abroad. Duffy Family Ambassador Scholarships support students educational travel abroad with up to $5,000. Awards go to students with demonstrated financial need who make a strong case for the value of their proposed program abroad. Emerson Foundation Scholarships offer up to $5,000 for international academic internships or directed study. Both of these scholarship programs are open to sophomore, junior, or senior students of all majors who are pursuing an experience for academic credit. Three more scholarships are available to help defray some costs of an off-campus program: The Florence and George Hutman Scholarship for International Study, the Dobert Family Scholarship, and the Andrew and Betty J. Anderson J Term Scholarship. These are open to students in good academic standing pursing international study at all levels.
