Downtown Chico Previews Holiday Cheer Downtown Chico will officially kick off the holiday season with the 36th Anniversary of Christmas Preview to be held on Sunday, November 18th from 4-8 p.m. This tradition in holiday hospitality celebrates the magic of the season. Downtown businesses debut their holiday cheer by inviting the community to delight in an evening filled with the sights, sounds and anticipation of the holidays. Stores don beautiful decorations, provide special entertainment and offer delicious refreshments. Strolling carolers add a special charm to the downtown streets - performing this year are: The Childrens Choir of Chico, Sounds of the Valley, The Bidwell Generals, and the hardest working band in snow business, The Yule Logs. Arriving by horse-drawn carriage, Santa Claus will visit children at his station located on the corner of Third Street & Broadway from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Youngsters can stop by for a visit, a special gift and a photo opportunity. Other special attractions include: The Mix 95.1 Christmas Karaoke booth, The Salvation Army kicking off its Red Kettle Campaign with bell-ringers and hot donuts served from the Emergency Disaster Services Canteen, and Hupp Signs, Inc. with a special holiday-themed photo opportunity. TJ Farms Carriage Company will be offering horsedrawn carriage rides around the downtown area and Creekside Cellars will provide a holiday trolley for those who park vehicles on the north side of Big Chico Creek. Roaring 20s on Display at the Historic Lott Home in Oroville

In the 1920s, a new woman was born. She smoked, drank, danced, and voted. She cut her hair, wore make-up, and went to parties. She was giddy and took risks. She was a flapper. The C.F. Lott Home in Sank Park, 1067 Montgomery Street in Oroville is featuring an interesting display about the flappers. Included in the display are dresses from the era, hand bags, jewelry and an advertising board from the Oroville City of Paris store which was a very popular shopping spot at the time. The flappers also began working outside the home and challenging womens traditional roles. They were considered a significant challenge to Victorian roles which at the time were defined as devotion to plain-living, hard work and religion. Research reveals that increasingly discarded old, rigid ideas about roles and embraced consumerism and personal choice and were often described in terms of representing a culture war of old versus new. Flappers also advocated voting and womens rights. The C.F. Lott Home is open for tour on Friday, Sunday and Mondays from 11:30 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.

Oroville Museum Receives Chinese Tapestry Donation

The Chinese Temple & Museum Complex in Oroville has added a beautiful tapestry to compliment its historic collection. The tapestry was donated by Mrs. Roxanne Kolbuke whose late husband, Antole, brought it from China to the United States in the 1940s. Tapestries typically depict scenery and the donated item is no exception with a very peaceful and serene illustration of trees, flowers, a village and a flowing stream. The tapestry is prominently displayed at the museum along with an Imperial Pillar rug of the 16th century, a bronze urn and a colorful display of Shadow Puppets made of donkey skin. China, there is evidence that woven rugs and wall hangings from Persia were imported to China during the realm of the Tang Dynasty from 618 to 906 AD. With the rise of the Mongol Empire and the subsequent rule over China by Kublai Khan in the 13th century, there was a flourishing of trade and crafts, which included the production of tapestries and rugs. Tapestry traditions exist in most countries in the world, making it a near-universal art form. The history of tapestry art extends back many centuries and many of museum quality are from the 1500s through the 1800s which was considered a golden age for the textile arts. The materials are typically Picardy wool, silk and metallic threads from Cyprus. Ancient Chinese tapestries usually feature silk threads that alternate with gold thread. The Oroville Chinese Temple traces its roots back to the 1860s when the Chinese community was very vibrant and active in the Oroville area. The Chinese Temple and Museum Complex is open for tour daily from Noon until 4:00 P.M.

Character Assassination an Oroville Mirror Priority
Maybe its, in part, human nature. Who isnt guilty of having said something negative about a friend or acquaintancerepeated a second-hand story about something someone said or did. Trashing someone even a friend. Then theres the individual whose life over the years has become nothing more than the carrier of sordid tales. Why does he travel from person to person planting half truths? A pastime? A vengeance? A weakness? A sickness? Its a perennial personal history story carried over into the publishing business, and it travels under the flag, Oroville Mirror. Recently the Oroville Mirrors victim was Mercury-Register reporter Mary Weston. Ms. Weston was attacked for having been a hairdresser before she became a reporter. Somehow, thats an argument to prove she is not capable of being a reporter. Sort of like the old argument, a woman cant have a career and be a good mother too. Well, if a former hairdresser isnt qualified to be a reporter, is a former convicted forgery felon qualified to be a publisher? Are these things mutually exclusive? Hairdressers have always been known as having the latest gossip and news. If you want to know whats going on in town, who better to ask? Maybe hairdressers are natural-born news gatherers. Convicted felons have been known for deceit, conspiracy, forgery, robbery. Are those the natural qualities you look for in a publisher? Are his pages the pages you go to for news and facts? Its laughably ironic for a carrier of sordid tales to contend, its a journalists responsibility to be fair and balanced in their reporting effort. What does fit is the misleading contention that, A diligent reporter might engage opinions from qualified financial experts and goes on to name a self-serving choice of financial expert, Don Remley. It has been apparent from the beginning of the FRRPD story, even to the casual observer, that publisher Loewe and Mr. Remley have been cohorts. Does this mean Mr. Remley mutually sanctions the publishing expertise of Mr. Loewe? Mr. Loewe postulates in an editorial opinion that the lawsuit brought against FRRPD is politically not financially and punitively motivated, and because Ms. Weston didnt bring that OPINION forth in her news story, she must be playing a game. The game she is playing is called keeping her opinions off the news pages. A lesson the publisher of the Oroville Mirror seems not destined to learn.

The November presentation for the Butte County Historical Society will be California and the Civil War, a multimedia show created by Grass Valley authors Richard Hurley and TJ Meekins from their research for Queen of the Northern Mines, just named a 2012 Ben Franklin Award Finalist for Historical Fiction. The show traces the political and military history of the Golden State from the Mexican War to the War Between the States, and reveals how close California came to siding with the South in 1861. Featured are stories of men of honor like General Albert Sidney Johnston, a Southern sympathizer whose refusal to betray his officers oath spared California from partisan war and San Franciscos gifted orator, the Reverend Thomas Starr King, whom Abraham Lincoln dubbed the man who saved California for the Union. The show also depicts the exploits of daring Rebel partisans determined to act for the Confederacy in California, both by land and by sea. The presentation is free and open to the public. The show takes place Sunday, November 18th, 2:00 p.m., at the Chico Branch of the Butte County Library, 1108 Sherman Avenue. Fun Ways to Burn Off Those Calories from Thanksgiving Dinner

I have been working hard this year to try and lose weight, and as all of us busy moms know, this is no easy task! Now with the holidays approaching, I will have even more temptations to resist. I can almost taste it now, the warm gravy pooling in the middle of a heaping pile of hot mashed potatoes. The sweet smell of warm pumpkin and pecan pie as it sifts through the air. Sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows burnt to a slight crisp. Dont forget the main course to complete the ultimate dinner of the year, the moist turkey with dressing! How many calories do you think are in the average Thanksgiving dinner? I went online to see what I could nd. I found a website that actually had a thanksgiving calculator, where you could check off on the list the items that you would eat. It would then calculate how many calories there where in each item and give you a total for the entire Thanksgiving dinner. Now I was pretty honest on the calculator and selected just about everything on the list. My grand total of calories just for the dinner alone (not counting if I ate any breakfast or lunch that day) was 2,050 calories. That is almost double the calories I should eat in a day. It also told me how many miles I would have to walk to burn all of those calories, which was 20.5 miles! I have been walking four times a week, but there is no way I could accomplish 20.5 miles in one day. I also know that I am going to enjoy my Thanksgiving dinner with my family. So what is a busy mom to do? How about some fun ways to get the kids involved to burn off some calories together? 1. Walkinga great way to get out and get moving. Change the scenery. Take the family to Riverbend Park and walk the loop a few times. Go up to the Oroville Dam and see how long it takes to walk across and back. Maybe offer some kind of prize for the person who has the quickest time. Kids love to win! 2. Bike or ScooterAnother option to walking, but still fun. Parents can walk and the kids can ride circles around you! Trying to keep up with them is the real exercise. 3. Soccer or Football Gamea fun family activity, especially on a holiday where your extended family can get on your nerves, if cooped up in a house all day! Any school eld is big enough to handle a fast game. The weather is usually still nice this time of year. 4. Shoppingstart the holiday season off by looking at decorations or window shopping. You can park downtown and walk around looking at all of the festive sights, while burning those calories. Hit the mall and see how many times you can walk from one end to the other. 5. Digital ScavengerHunt-create a scavenger hunt list and split up the family to see who can nd the items on the list the fastest. Using your camera or cell phone, you take a picture of the item you found from the list. There has to be a time limit (like one hour) to nd as many of the items you can and meet back together. This will have you running around and burning calories in no time! Whatever you decide to do, enjoy a great meal with your family and give thanks for the thing that is really importantbeing together.
