TOPIC 1 : INTRODUCTION 1.1 Explanation of Interactive Whiteboard Standard classroom uses


An Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) is a large, touch-sensitive board connected to a digital projector and a computer. The projector displays the image from the computer screen on the board The computer can then be controlled by touching the board directly or with a special pen. 1. 2. 3. 4. Emphasis is on interactive whiteboard as a tool where effectiveness will be determined by how it is used. Designed to develop interactivity in classroom learning. Danger that it could be used for further chalk and talk. Facilitates auditory, visual and kinaesthetic learning styles Many other brands of iwb available. (Hitachi, Smart) Each brand has its own software. (Workshop 2 slides will refer to pedagogy)

Click on text tool (T), place cursor where you want to begin and start typing using keyboard. Text options for formatting text in tool tray. Using select tool, double click on text to access editing text toolbar. Click on the broken T to allow you to click into the middle of the text to edit. Insert images from Resource Library. Reposition and resize. Explore categories of folders and resources (images, videos, sounds) To insert multiple copies of same image click on rubber stamp icon and then click required image in tool tray. Click required number of times on flipchart page to insert the images. Insert background. Explore categories Clear background by clicking bin icon below categories button. Explore first 7 icons: New flipchart (not new page) /Open / Save / Print / Reset page / Teacher notes / Web browser / Close flipchart. You will be prompted to save.

Resources may be saved in Personal or Shared folders within the Resource Library or saved to another location. Facility to search for resources. Spotlight Reveal Zoom Dice Protractor Ruler Compass Fraction Creator Recognition Floating Calculator Camera Screen Recorder XY Origin Clock Highlighted tools are most commonly used Allows you to focus attention on an aspect of the screen or allows you to hide an aspect of the screen. Allows you to hide the displayed page and use a window blind to reveal the underlying material from either the top, bottom, left or right. To zoom in on aspect of a page click the zoom tool and hold and press on aspect to be enlarged. Double click on a page to return page to original size. Allows you to roll up to 5 dice. The result can be pasted onto the page. Use to create random numbers. Use a graduated, scaleable protractor on screen. Use a graduated resizable ruler on screen. Draw circles onscreen. Technique: Circle of Focus. Focus on specific text/objects by dragging into a central circle on the page. Handwritten fractions will be converted to text objects Convert handwriting to text. Use a simplified childs calculator on screen or use a standard version. Capture pictures from your flipchart pages. Advanced Create a video recording of a screen activity e.g. a mathematical process Allows you to create or change the rotation point of an object on a page. Display analogue or digital clock on screen. Use clock for count-down or count-up activities.
