CONTENT Induction Set (5 minutes)

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY Teacher shows a video of a superhero named superman. Who are here like to watch superman cartoon or movies? Ok, now I want to show you this video. Teacher asks the students about the superman video. From the video, what can you talk about superman? How does the supermans hand look when he is flying? Can anyone of you shows the way he flying? Teacher shows the ultraman picture. What picture is this class? This is the picture of how the ultramans hand look when he attack the enemy. Now, I want to know how many of you like ultraman? Teacher shows the ultraman style. This is how do the ultraman did when he attact the enemy.

LEARNING ACTIVITY The students who like to watch superman put their hand up.

The students tell about superman characteristics and show the styles.

The students tell about the picture shown.

Teacher tells the students the different of hands used between superman and ultraman. We can see that superman style is like this whereas ultraman is like this. Teacher informs the students that they are going to learn about parallel lines.

The students differentiate the styles by doing it together.

Actually, today we are going to learn about parallel lines. Development (10minutes) 1) Determine whether two straight lines are parallel when the gradients of both lines are known and vice versa. Teacher uses the slides to teach todays lesson (parallel lines). Teacher tells the learning outcomes of todays lesson. Determine whether two straight lines are parallel when the gradients of both lines are known and vice versa. Find the equation of a straight line that passes through a fixed point and parallel to a given line. Teacher shows a few diagram and ask students to recognize parallel or perpendicular line. These are some of lines. I want you to recognize which is a parallel and perpendicular line. Which lines is parallel class? Is there any perpendular lines? Teacher introduces the concept of parallel lines using the aid of powerpoint presentation. Two lines are parallel when the slope is both same. Students listen to teachers learning outcomes for todays lesson.

Students make conclusion on how to differentiate parallel or perpendicular line.

Students listen to teachers explanation.

If L1 // L2 , then mL1 = mL2

Lines in the same plane that never intersect are called parallel. If two non-vertical lines have the same slope, then they are parallel. And the converse is also true If two non-vertical lines are parallel, then they have the same slope. Example: line y = 3x + 4 is parallel to line y = 3x - 2 Because the equations of two parallel lines have the same slope, but two different yintercepts.

Teacher provides examples to students. Example 1: Are the lines 12x + 3y = -9 and -8x -2y = 14 parallel?

Students listen and take note to the teachers example.

2) Find the equation of a straight line that passes through a fixed point and parallel to a given line.

Teacher tells the students about the steps to find the equation of a straight line that passes through a fixed point and parallel to a given line. 1) Express the given line into slope-intercept form. 2) Find the slope of the line. 3) Use slope to find the equation of the line

Students state the steps to find the equation from the components in an equation.

Teacher shows the students more examples. Example 3: Find the equation of the line L1 which is parallel to 3x + 2y 5 = 0 and passes through (4, -1).

Students listen to the example explained by teacher.

Students listen to the teachers example.

Teacher shows another type of question example. Example 4: Find the equation of a line parallel to y = - x that passes through the point (2, 4).

What is the gradient of the first line, y = - x ? This is in gradient intercept form so y = mx + b which means the gradient is 1. So we know the gradient is 1 and it passes through (2, 4). Having the point and the gradient, we can use the point-gradient formula to find the equation of the line. y 4 = -1 ( x 2 ) y = -x + 6

Exercises ( 10 minutes)

Teacher gives some exercise in a worksheet as enrichment exercise. Teacher wants to make sure that students understand about todays lessons. Teacher gives handout as an exercise to students. Teacher asks students to solve the handout questions in 5 minutes. Handout questions: 1) Match lines in column A that parallel with a line in column B

Students take and handouts and discuss it with their friends.

Students involve in discussion.

COLUMN A 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 2y = 12x + 3 y = 4x + 7 y = -10 + 5x x 2y = 4 2y + 3x + 1 = 0 a) b) c) d) e)

COLUMN B y = 4x - 18 2x 4y = 12 y = 5x + 2 y+ =0 y = 6x + 4

2) Find the equation of a line going through the point (3, -5) and parallel to = + .

Students complete the worksheet given.

a) +

b) 3y + 2x + 9 = 0 c) d) + = =

3) Given line 1, L1 has a slope of m= 3. Is the line 2, L2 is parallel each other?

L2 L1 ( 7, 25 )

m=3

( 1, 7)

Closure (5 minutes)

Teacher recall about todays lesson.

Students give respond to teacher about todays lesson. Students volunteer state the steps to find the parallel lines. The students enjoy the video.

Today, they learnt about parallel lines and how to find the line equation.

Teacher shows a video about parallel lines.
