It is thrilling that you are seriously taking accounting as your future career. I would like to provide you information regarding the CPA examination, which would be an essential stepping stone for your career as an accountant. Being a CPA, you become a vital part of the business organization, which brings you many job opportunities not only in accounting but also in other areas such as finance. Passing the exam and becoming a certified accountant reflects your professionalism and commitment to the career. In addition, you gain a higher salary which would be a great benefit in your career. The exam has 4 sections: Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting(FAR) Business Environment and Concepts (BEC), and last of all Regulation (REG). These are the detailed information on the 4 sections. First of all, Auditing and Attestation (AUD) covers internal controls and audit procedures and findings. Second, Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) covers typical items in financial statements to not typical details in governmental and not for profit reporting. Third, Business Environment and Concepts (BEC) covers issues such as corporate governance, economic concepts, and financial management. Lastly, Regulation (REG) covers issues in ethics and business law, also on federal taxation for individuals and entities. There are many courses in the business department but I would like to recommend two courses that are necessary for a CPA. The first course is Business Law. This course focuses on the how regulations and laws impacts business. It provides guidance on understanding government regulation on business, further this course gives an opportunity to learn about the legality of agreements and contracts related to accounting issues. Also, I recommend Business Ethics course. Due to various accounting scandals and the turbulent economic environment, it is essential to take this course since it helps prepare future accountants to learn the foundations of ethical behavior in the business environment. To pass the CPA exam, you will need to get the score 75 or higher for each section. Preparing for the exam is not an easy road, but you will need to always keep in mind the advantages when passing the exam. I hope that you will plan your schedule accordingly, and have a strong study plan to successfully pass the exam. Good luck! From, Student Adviser at Oakton Community College.
