Thought beats
Thought beats are a way in which the audience view a song. They visualise the music in their mind, simultaneously making associations of that song, through the music and voice of the lead singer, normally the artists voice is unique therefore acts as identication of trademarks that work well with the star image. Goodwin also suggests that the thought beats act as stories and the artist the storyteller, making the music video a communication device.

Narrative and Performance

Goodwin states that songs fail to give the audience a complete narrative, he says we only get a taste of the narrative of a music video, and that we make up the rest of the story in our minds the way we wish to see it. Goodwin goes on to explain that a music video should ignore common narrative, as it is important in their role of advertising. He states narrative and performance work hand in hand as it makes it easier to the audience to keep their interest, as the artist is both narrator and participant.

Star Image

Goodwin suggests that the Star Image is another vital aspect of music videos. He says that it is a form of advertising the artist, through Meta narrative which is a large narrative that describes the development of the star over time. This has a large effect during the production process of the music video.

Relation of Visuals to Songs

Goodwin states that there are three ways in which music videos work to promote a certain song, these are: Illustrate - This is where a series of images are used to illustrate to the audience the meaning of certain lyrics and the genre of the song. Amplify - Being similar to repeatability, this is where meanings and effects are constantly manipulated through a video and constantly drummed into the audiences vision. Disjuncture - This is where the meaning of the song is completely ignored

Technical Aspects
Technical aspects hold the music video together, these are camera work, movement, angle, mise-en-scene, editing, sound and special effects. This is all done during lming and post production. For instance lighting and colour helps to effect the mood of the video. In terms of editing the videos are cut to match the beat of the music. Basically it is about making the music video as attractive as possible to the audience.
