Chowringhee
and Surroundings

Chowringhee Road is the arterial road running from the eastern fringes of Esplanade southwards up to the crossing with Lower Circular Road (renamed Acharya Jagadish Bose Road). It is the single most important spine of the metropolis of Kolkata. One of the first areas of expansion by the British, Chowringhee still remains very much the heart of Kolkata and the place of choice for many large business houses.

01. Certain old buildings flanking the main thoroughfare are ill maintained . 02. The biggest problem is hawker menace which encroaches the entire length of sidewalks, even in front of Indian Museum, leaving little or no space for pedestrian movement. 03. Roads devoid of regulatory markings and signage. 04. Haphazard traffic control and lack of public awareness leading to traffic congestion especially near crossings. 05. So called Metro Channel (political demonstration area )abutting the main road near a very important multi-crossing ,disturbs the whole traffic pattern frequently. 06. Hoarding / banners indiscriminately mar the beautiful facades.

CONCLUSION
Policy enforcement regarding occupiers co-operation for maintenance and upkeep of old/dilapidated buildings.
Awareness addressing upkeep of old buildings to be driven in through extensive propaganda. Discipline enforcement on varied aspects ranging from garbage disposal to movement on roads & walkways through media awareness campaigning & widespread use of directional signage. Hawker menace may be tackled through interactions between the authorities and the hawkers and ensuring a participation of hawkers in the solution process.

CONCLUSION

funding by sponsors for the movable kiosk designs envisaged for the hawkers.
Involving Financial modalities planned appropriately so as to benefit sponsors, authorities as well as the general public.( Campaigns or other features such as kiosks, furniture sponsored by corporate bodies, aiding authorities in raising awareness of general public and provision of public facilities and also aiding in a subtle but large scale marketing aspect of the sponsor.)
An attempt to instill a pride and the sense of belonging to the cityaggressive media campaigning plays a major role.

A mere beautification can never be the solution to the existing deep rooted problems It is not about just cosmetic treatment by painting and adding sculptures.. But about solving the problems and creating a healthy environment for all.. Promoting economic growth and relief Aggressive media intervention can aid in raising general awareness levels to a great extent.

A joint effort of public, private and media, can be made towards a cleaner and better Kolkata and help it regain its past glory
