Follow the checklist below to make the most of your Fall 2012 EXPO Job and Internship Fair experience. Use these tips for success before, during, and after the fair. BEFORE Read this EXPO Job Fair Guide thoroughly. Study the articles and explore the list of organizations registered for EXPO. Review the chart within this Guide that lists employers by career category, but consider all companies. This preparation will give you an advantage over students who come unprepared. Update your resume (review the Create a Resume to Capture Employers Attention article on page 7 and the Resume Rubric on page 6). Attend the Professional Resume Critique workshop on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 in Business Administration Building Room 114 between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. or visit the Career Center to have your resume reviewed. Schedule an appointment by contacting the Career Center at 419-372-2356 or bring in your resume during Drop-In Hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Last Chance Resume Critiques will be available Monday, October 8, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. in the Career Center, 318 Math Sciences Building. Access your WorkNet account through your MyBGSU web portal under the Student Services Section in the Career Center links located on the left navigation bar. In WorkNet, complete the Profile section and upload your resume in the Documents section. Check your e-mail regularly to see if your resume has been accepted. If it is not accepted, follow the instructions provided and submit again. If the resume is accepted, access your WorkNet account and include your approved resume in the resume books by clicking on the Send My Resume tab in the Documents section. Employers access these books to search for candidates. Search WorkNet regularly for internships, co-ops, and career (postgraduation) employment opportunities. All employers on WorkNet are seeking BGSU students or recent alumni! Use the quicklink on the right side of the home page to get a list of all positions posted for Fall 2012 EXPO. Schedule e-mail alerts. Create a Saved Search in your WorkNet account. Start by clicking on the Search Jobs & Internships tab and selecting BGSU WorkNet Listings. Choose the Advanced Search option and click the check box next to save as: and name the search. Search the postings by selecting the position type of Fall 2012 EXPO and other desired criteria. Remember, if you use too many search criteria it will greatly limit your options. We suggest using position type or major for your search criteria. Dont forget to go to the My Saved Searches tab after you submit your search criteria and click on Schedule to have WorkNet send you e-mail notifications when new employers register for the fair. Research organizations attending the Fair by accessing your WorkNet account. Review organizations profiles in the Research Employers module (e.g., services and products, YouTube videos, pictures, stock symbols) and Fall 2012 EXPO postings. Dont forget to review company websites to learn about their mission and vision, financial data, organizational structure, new developments, industry trends, and recent news reports. Search social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, to learn more about organizations. For additional information, read the Online Job Search: Tweeting, Linking, and Creating a Personal Brand through Social Media article on page 10 in this Guide. Attend EXPO prep workshops. Dates and times are located under the Events module of your WorkNet account and on the back page of this Guide. Practice your one-minute commercial, so you can effectively communicate with employers. Whats a one minute commercial? Read Introduce Yourself: The One-Minute Commercial article on page 7 of this Guide. DURING Attend the job and internship fair! Bring your BGSU ID card to check in. Make sure you attend the Fair early because employers will be creating interview schedules for the next day, and you do not want to show up after the schedules are full. Dress professionally. We recommend wearing a suit if you have one or other professional clothes, such as sports coats, blazers, button-down shirts, ties, blouses, slacks, skirts, etc. See the Job and Internship Fair: What to Wear? article on page 11 for more information. Take a quick walk through the job and internship fair. Review the floor map and identify locations of organizations of interest. Prioritize the order in which you will visit your targeted organizations. Assess the length of the line of students waiting to speak with the recruiter. If you are nervous, you may not want to go directly to the organization of most interest first. Pay attention to the questions the recruiter is asking the other candidates; this allows you to prepare before speaking to the employer. Request to schedule an interview with organizations staying for next day interviews. Review the Be Prepared to Answer Behavioral Interview Questions article on page 8 for information about successful interview strategies. Keep track of your interviews by using the Student Interview Schedule form distributed at the Student Registration Table. Ask for business cards, after speaking with recruiters; also ask for recruiting brochures, and other company materials. Jot down notes on the back of the business card; this will help in writing thank you letters. Remember, you will be speaking with many employers throughout the day; taking notes and reviewing recruiting materials will help you keep track of important details and next steps. AFTER Send a brief thank you letter or e-mail to the employers you met to reaffirm your interest and remind them of your qualifications and fit with their organizations. A list of attending recruiters will be posted on the Career Centers website at hire.bgsu.edu after the job and internship fair. See the Follow-up with a Thank You article in this Guide on page 12. Apply for on-campus interviews. Check WorkNet to see which organizations will be returning to hold on-campus interviews at the Career Center. Search for positions in WorkNet, using the keywords OnCampus Recruiting to find and apply for positions of interest. Keep checking your e-mail regularly to see if you have been invited to schedule an interview with an organization coming on campus to conduct interviews. Dont give up! Organizations post jobs, co-ops, and internships throughout the semester. If you need additional help with your search, contact the Career Center at 419-372-2356 to schedule an appointment with a career consultant.

information about yourself and your suitability for the job. 4. Gain confidence in your Job and Internship Fair skills by networking with recruiters. If this is your first job and internship fair, do not be afraid to approach employers. They are there for you and more than happy to get to know you. If you are seeking employment, network with employers to obtain interviews and ultimately job offers. 5. Observe the interactions of other participants and recruiters to identify strategies for success, such as a firm handshake, an outstanding introduction (see the One-Minute Commercial article on page 7), a pleasant demeanor, or how to dress appropriately (see the Job and Internship Fair: What to Wear? article on page 11). 6. Take risks. The first career fair seems intimidating. However, when you take the risk and speak to employers you will realize they are easy to talk to and are here to meet you. They have chosen BGSU because they want to meet BGSU students. They are always looking for talented individuals like you no matter if it is your first year of college or your last. Once you take the risk and network with employers, you will realize that it gets easier after that. If you are seeking an internship or career position, see the Introduce Yourself: The One-Minute Commercial article on page 7 as a guide for your conversation. If you are attending EXPO to learn what it is all about, review the example of an introduction below: Hi. My name is Frieda Falcon, and I am a first-year student. I am currently undecided, but I am researching different career options. I am interested in broadcasting and journalism, and I understand your company is hiring an Anchor/Reporter. Would you have time to answer a few questions about how to become a News Anchor? Specifically, are there certain experiences and skills you seek in potential candidates? Keep in mind it only takes a few moments to ask an employer if they have the time to speak with you. After each employer interaction, ask for a business card and thank the employer; this will make a positive impression. Remember, the EXPO Job and Internship Fair is an excellent opportunity to learn about career paths, network with employers, and ultimately gain employment. We hope to see you at EXPO!

Making the Most of Your First Job and Internship Fair


When is the right time to attend a career fair? Anytime throughout your BGSU experience! The EXPO Job and Internship Fair is not just for juniors and seniors. Whether you are a first-year college student wanting to see what EXPO is like, a sophomore or junior hoping for an internship, or a senior looking for career positions, there are many opportunities to learn and interact with employers at your first job and internship fair. Here are six reasons to attend the Fall EXPO Job and Internship Fair and how to make the most of the experience:

1. Learn about what a job is like by preparing questions to ask employers. If you are a first-year student and want to learn about a particular career, you could ask about a typical day at work to gain an idea of the job responsibilities; you also can inquire about the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in a particular career. If you are job searching, asking specific questions about the positions you seek and demonstrating your skills and professionalism to the employers could help you obtain an interview, or better yet, a job or internship! 2. Network with employers after conducting your research. Before talking to an employer, research the organization, job descriptions, career paths, industry, and company culture; this will make you stand out from your peers. If you are still unclear about your career and academic major, utilize this opportunity to network with employers to help you solidify your career goals. 3. Find out what experience, knowledge, and skills employers seek in candidates. If you are deciding on a career path, this will help you identify what you can do during college to become marketable to employers for a future internship or job. If you are job searching, knowing what employers want is critical, so you can provide them with relevant

Create a Resume to Capture Employers Attention


Organizations often receive hundreds of resumes for one position. Therefore, it should not be a surprise that an employers first glance at your resume only may be 30 seconds long. Does your resume have what it takes to make it past one glance? How can you make your resume stand out from the rest? Review the Resume Rubric on page 6 for advice on creating a resume that goes beyond the basics. Customize your resume for a specific position by using the job description to help guide your writing and make sure to indicate examples illustrating required and preferred qualifications. Update your resume with the most relevant experiences and skills. You might think that a general work experience is not relevant to a potential career-related position, but the transferable skills you used or learned as part of that experience might be a perfect match. Transferable skills are abilities that are acquired or used in previous experiences, which are applicable to a variety of situations and tasks. For example, the skills you gained interacting with customers at your job as a cashier can be used in another setting, such as a sales internship. Examples of transferable skills include public speaking, writing, and problem solving. Remember, you can enhance your chances of being noticed by an employer by communicating relevant skills gained from various experiences.

Introduce Yourself: The One-Minute Commercial


Your success as a job hunter will rely heavily on the initial impression you give employers. On average, recruiters attending BGSUs EXPO Job and Internship Fairs stated that they spend between three and five minutes with each student, so be sure to make the most of the time you have with them. EXPO employers also reported interest in learning about a candidates major, GPA, year in school, career interests and goals, attitude, unique qualifications, and relevant experiences (e.g., internships, leadership, and co-curricular activities). To improve your chances of making a favorable impression, practice delivering a one-minute commercial about yourself and the contributions you could make to an organization. The following format will help you develop an excellent one-minute commercial for use at EXPO and other career fairs. 1. Introduce yourself by first and last name, major, and class standing (e.g., senior). 2. Briefly share your knowledge about the organization, field, or industry. 3. Explain what you can offer by highlighting your relevant skills and experience. 4. Express your interest in learning more about the organization by asking a direct question or requesting an interview.

EXAMPLE OF A ONEMINUTE COMMERCIAL


Hello, my name is Blake Springs, and I am a junior Graphic Design major. Thank you for being at EXPO; I have been looking forward to speaking with you today. I noticed on WorkNet that you have an opening for a graphic design intern; I am very interested in your company and this position. I am fluent in html, Flash, and the Adobe programs. Last year, I was selected to participate in BGSUs Undergraduate Art Exhibit, as well as the Toledo 419 Art Show. Entrance to these exhibits is a very competitive process, so I was proud to have several prints and paintings chosen. This past summer, I completed an internship with ProHome in their Marketing department where I developed many print and web pieces to launch their new Living Room Campaign. The campaign was very successful, and I gained great insight about marketing techniques. I am interested in learning more about your graphic design position. What types of projects would this intern work on?

Professional Networking Tips for College Students

To access WorkNet Mobile navigate to the web address http:// bgsu-csm.symplicity.com/students on Android, iOS, Mobile Safari, or iPhone devices. Be sure to bookmark this website for quick and easy access to WorkNet. iPhone users can save a web app after logging in and following the prompts. Networking is one of the most important job skills you will acquire in college. As a student, you will have a vast amount of networking opportunities on campus. It is important to begin networking even before you have thought about a job searchnetwork with classmates, faculty members, advisors, etc.you never know who could assist you in the future! Practice and preparation will help develop skills needed to be effective during networking opportunities. As difficult as it might seem at first, the ability to make a positive impression on people will become extremely important as your career advances. To meet your full networking potential, use the following tips: BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUR FACULTY MEMBERS It is important not only to see your faculty member as an educator, but also as a professional contact. Professors play many roles serving as advisors, mentors, professional contacts, references, etc.; and they are individuals who may have significant contacts in other organizations outside of the classroom. Take class time as an opportunity to work hard and show dedication, while getting to know your faculty members on a professional level. Professors may take note of this behavior and be excellent referrals. JOIN STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS Professional and academically affiliated organizations provide you with knowledge of a specific field of study and related careers. These organizations connect you with individuals who have the same career interests and goals. Student organizations help you learn how to work in groups, plan events, and utilize effective communication skills. Consider joining a student organization to gain transferable skills that are needed to succeed in the workplace and network with future colleagues. CONTRIBUTE YOUR TIME AND VOLUNTEER One of the most effective ways to build relationships with people can be done through volunteering. Your involvement will give you the chance to build relationships with individuals who will be able to discover your talents, values, and character. Think about choosing a volunteer opportunity related to your desired field in order to gain relevant experience. Not only will this benefit you in evaluating your career choices, but the experience will enhance your resume and make you a stronger candidate. OBTAIN A PARTTIME JOB Nationally and at BGSU the majority of students work while attending college. Student employment is much more than earning a paycheck. Results from a BGSU research study on assessing student employee learning indicated that working on-campus offers an opportunity for all students to learn and gain transferable skills. Part-time positions also offer an outstanding opportunity to make connections with colleagues and supervisors. ENGAGE IN AN INTERNSHIP OR COOP EXPERIENCE Participating in an internship or co-op is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in your chosen field. Internships/co-ops provide a platform to network with other professionals and build lasting relationships. Your supervisor and other professionals you worked closely with may be excellent references for future positions. Even after the internship/co-op has ended, follow up with your contacts in order to continue building a professional relationship. DOCUMENT YOUR NETWORK Document your contacts in a list or database. How many people do you know? It is probably a lot more than you think. Make a list of everyone you know, such as family, friends, colleagues, classmates, etc. Dont forget to include people like your clergy, dentist, doctor, hair stylist, and others who you see on a regular basis. You can track new contacts you meet by collecting and documenting the information from business cards. LinkedIn. com is a popular online professional networking site that offers a way to maintain up-to-date contact information for all of your connections. LinkedIn also provides a venue to build and enhance your network by suggesting connections to individuals with similar contacts. FOLLOW UP AND PROVIDE THANK YOU NOTES By maintaining an up-to-date contact list, you can follow-up and provide them with current information on your job search needs or the details of your new position. You also can send your contacts information that is related to their career interests. Networking is all about making connections and assisting others. When someone from your network helps you make connections with professionals in your field of interest or assists with your job search in another way be sure to send her/him a thank you note. Sending thank you notes lets you follow up in a professional manner, while also providing pertinent information about yourself.

Be Prepared to Answer Behavioral Interview Questions


Past behavior is considered the best predictor of future behavior. Recruiters often use behavioral interview questions to evaluate how you would handle yourself in a similar situation. For this type of interview, you may be asked questions like: - Describe a time when you did more than what was expected of you. Why did you provide the extra effort? - Give me an example of a time when you set a goal and were able to achieve it. - Tell me about a difficult decision that you had to make. How did you go about making it? When answering these questions, be sure to illustrate your skills and abilities by referencing specific examples from your coursework, leadership roles, co-op/ internship assignments, work experience, community service involvement, volunteer projects, or other relevant experiences. To effectively answer behavioral interview questions, use the SOAR Model. SOAR stands for Situation, Obstacle, Action, and Result. This model is an outstanding way to organize your responses and communicate what you have to offer an employer in terms of skills, knowledge, and experience. Here is an example of how one might use the SOAR model to answer a behavioral interview question. Question: Describe a project or situation that best demonstrates a time you took initiative. SITUATION: Over the past summer I was an intern for Acme Widget Company, where I demonstrated initiative through implementing a green office project. OBSTACLE: In the office, I noticed there were ways to save resources and energy. I wanted to develop a plan to save the company money and change the office culture to be more sustainable and efficient. After speaking to my supervisor about the idea, I was asked to develop a plan and train the entire staff on sustainable techniques. ACTION: I contacted my states office for sustainability to learn about resources for creating a green office. After compiling research, I then created a training manual of action steps. This manual was distributed to all employees during a training session I facilitated. RESULT: Two months after implementing these action steps the office saved $2,000 in energy costs, and we were able to reduce office trash output by a third. The company also applied for green certification from the state office and received a gold star rating.

The SOAR Model


SITUATION: Give an example of an experience with a positive outcome or, if asked for a negative example, talk about what you learned from the experience. OBSTACLE: Describe challenges you encountered in the situation. ACTION: Specify what actions you took to overcome the obstacles and achieve your results. RESULT: Highlight and emphasize positive outcomes.

2. Keep it positive. Negative posts showcase a negative personality. A good rule of thumb is post only positive comments about your current or a potential employer. Additionally, if you are pursuing multiple opportunities, it may be a good idea to not post overly positive comments either. Gushing over Employer A while Employer B is watching may have a negative effect on your candidacy. Check out the Dean of Students website, Clear Eye for the Facebook Guy at http://www.bgsu.edu/offices/sa/ studentconduct/page29925.html, to see a fictional example of an inappropriate Facebook profile. LINKEDIN: LinkedIn is a professional networking site where users can create a profile, connect to others, and present information about their professional careers. LinkedIn offers groups and applications primarily for networking, idea and information sharing, and company research. 1. Create your professional profile. Upload or add information from your resume to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and abilities. Remember, if you add a photo, keep it professional. 2. Ask for recommendations from your connections. Providing short 1-3 sentence comments on your skills, abilities, or knowledge can increase your marketability and add to your credibility. Ask for recommendations from your supervisors, colleagues, or clients for a well-rounded view of your experience. 3. Join alumni groups and career or industry related groups. Once you join groups, follow and contribute to conversations by communicating original ideas and asking questions and advice. Remember to announce that you are job searching and ask for leads. 4. Research companies. Use the search feature to indentify and investigate companies of interest. Find employees who are IN your network and request to be introduced through a shared 1st connection. New to LinkedIn and want some help getting started? Visit http://learn.linkedin. com/students/ TWITTER: Twitter is a micro blog where users are able to tweet information in 140 characters or less. Users can create a brief profile and include a picture. Tweeters can follow common interests by using the # sign or hashtag in front of the common conversation term and then searching for that hashtag. If a user wants to reply or talk to another user, the use of the @ symbol along with the other users Twitter username will create a public mention and tweet. A user also can direct message another person, which is a private message. 1. Follow companies. Look up and follow company Twitter feeds of interest. Recruiters may keep Twitter accounts to share information on campus visits, job fairs, and postings. Company Twitter feeds also may include recent news, product information, and job openings. 2. Follow relevant #hashtags to your search. Some examples of job #hashtags include: #tweetmyjobs, #sportsjobs, and #salesjobs. Job and Internship Fair: What to Wear?


In a job market where numerous candidates are competing to get the interview that gets the job, being noticed for the wrong reason is a bad thing. Your choices in dress can make a great first impression or may lose your potential employers interest before you can say Hello. So, what should you wear? When attending a job and internship fair or participating in an interview, the Career Center recommends wearing business professional attire. Review the information below to gain an understanding about standards and expectations for professional dress. FOR MEN: Conservative two-piece business suits in blue, brown, black, or grey. Button-down shirts in white or solid colors that complement the suit. A properly knotted tie in a coordinating color; a little pattern or small print is fine. Dark belt, socks, and shoes (either tie or slip-on and well polished) that go with the suit colors. Hair should be neatly groomed; avoid non-standard hair colors. Faces should either be clean-shaven or with neatly trimmed facial hair. Nails should be short, clean, and unpolished. Regarding jewelry: a watch and a ring are acceptable. Consider that even a single earring may be unacceptable to some employers. FOR WOMEN: Two-piece business suits in a solid conservative color or a simple dress with a business jacket. Always wear a blouse or top with a suit. Camisoles and cotton tee shirts are not appropriate options for business suits. If wearing a skirt or dress, wear panty hose. Skirts should be no more than two inches above the knee. Shoes should be color coordinated, closed-toed pumps with a conservative heel. No stilettos, please! Purses, if carried, should not be overly large and should coordinate with the outfit. Hair should be neatly styled. For best impressions, avoid extreme styles and nonstandard hair colors. Nails should be neatly manicured. Consider nail choices carefully; bold colors or overly long nails may detract from a business-like appearance. Regarding jewelry: think classic and minimal (small earrings, a necklace, and a few rings). Hint: If you wonder if it is too much, it probably is. FOR WOMEN AND MEN: Good hygiene is essential. Clean skin, hair, and teeth are a must. Fragrance is optional. If worn, perfume, cologne, or aftershave should be very light. For best impressions, piercings, and tattoos should not be visible to prospective employers. Clothing should fit; too tight, too short, too high, or too low is not professional. If in doubt, consult with a Career Center staff member. All garments should be neat, clean, and wrinkle-free. No gum chewing. If you are a smoker, do not smell like smoke for a job and internship fair or an interview. Remember, in the end, a friendly smile, good manners, and an air of quiet confidence are the very best accessories in any environment.

In the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) 2012 Student Survey, 41% of participating college seniors reported using social media as a tool in their job search. Additionally, according to a survey from Jobvite in 2012, 73% of recruiters have successfully hired a candidate who was identified or introduced through a social network or social media. Searching for a job is more than just submitting your resume. Utilizing social media and networking can increase your chances of obtaining an interview leading to your dream job! As you utilize social media and networking in your job search, be sure to create a consistent online brand. What is a brand? Think of your brand as an online identity or reputation, the assets or skills associated with your online presence. Make sure all of your social media platforms align with your professional online brand. For example, if an employer sees two different personas on your social media sites, they may wonder which is the one they could potentially hire. When creating your online brand be authentic; do not pretend to be someone or something you are not. Just as you would when writing your resume, be honest! Be true to your experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities; and showcase appropriate examples. Utilize industry keywords and jargon in your profiles, conversations, and posts. Communicate in a professional manner, even within the Twitter constraints of 140 characters. TIPS FOR USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN YOUR JOB SEARCH. FACEBOOK: Facebook is a social networking site where users can create profiles to share status information, photos, and anything else with friends or the public. Facebook offers groups, pages, and applications for users to communicate, inform, and entertain. It is seen primarily as a social platform. Here are some suggestions for appropriate use of Facebook. 1. Make your profile professional and create privacy settings. If you include a picture, make sure it is appropriate. For example, post a picture where only you are in the picture, wearing appropriate or professional attire, and have a pleasant expression on your face. The background should be relatively neutral. Remove tags of yourself from any inappropriate pictures. If inappropriate pictures of you are up on someone elses site, request that the friend takes down the pictures. Even if your site is private, an employer may have a connection to one of your friends and a way to view your content. Remember to always maintain your privacy settings.

Followup by sending a thank you letter/e-mail to the employers you met at EXPO to reaffirm your interest, remind them of your qualifications, and highlight your fit within their organization. Sending a thank you letter/e-mail is not only proper etiquette, it also reinforces your ability to follow through. PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING TIPS IN MIND Send letters/e-mails out in a timely manner. If your communication arrives within a day or two after your meeting with the recruiter, you have a better chance of being remembered.
