15th November, 2012

Unfortunately the weather has not co-operated for our school Athletics Day today and although the students did start the rotation of events at 9am it had to be called off due to the rain. Because we have a very full school calendar leading up to the Inter-Intermediate Athletics Competition scheduled for 27th November, students will compete in events with their own Team over the next week to confirm who qualifies.

MIS - NZ Junior Year 8 Netball Champs!

Nine MIS girls travelled to Taupo to compete in the annual NZ Junior Netball Festival which was held over the last term break. MIS Bulletz Netball team had won the Year 7 title in 2011 so they were very keen to take the Year 8 title too. The team played four games on Saturday winning three games against St Peters Chanel Hamilton 40-4, Tauranga Intermediate 20-14 and Mount View 44-6; however, they lost to Howick 22-18. On the Sunday the girls took out the semi-final against Cambridge 43-3 and were up against Howick again for the finals. MIS Bulletz played a brilliant two halves and had a good lead. However, Howick came out fighting and were looking to creep in for a win towards the end of the game. The last quarter saw the girls dig deep and play hard to take the win 21-17 making them the 2012 NZ Junior Year 8 champions! These girls played a magnificent tournament and their set plays and awesome defence helped in every game. Well done girls, be proud of your amazing achievements! The MIS Bulletz Team: Alysha Priestley, Ella Wilton, Mackenzie Taylor, Zarnia Herewini-Wilson, Alison Priestley, Tiana Parker, Sophie Hamilton, Te Kawhi King-TamihanaToby, Jazmine Clark-Cook and supporter Elly Wilson. The team was coached by Mrs Taylor with support from dedicated parents.

Makuhari Student Exchange

On Monday the 17th of September two M.I.S students Luke Phillips and Sukhraj Dosanjh got on a flight for Japan with Mr McDonald and headed for a homestay with 32 other Intermediate students from around the Waikato. This trip was part of an annual Year 8 exchange that our school has been involved in for many years. Families from our school host students from Makuhari Junior High in the first term of every year. Our first day in Japan was a public holiday so we spent the day with our host families. We then had a welcome assembly at Makuhari Junior High (which was 5 storeys high.) We had a tour of the school and went to a shopping mall named Ito Yokado. Later we had a traditional Japanese tea ceremony (which was DISGUSTING). Next we visited Makuhari International School and everyone there spoke English much to our surprise, then from the school we traveled to a traditional garden where we had our second tea ceremony (still DISGUSTING). We then traveled back to the school and participated in fun activities. We spent a day at Disneyland and we had a blast! Next was the weekend, usually Japanese people work on Saturday but it was Equinox Day on Saturday so everyone had a day off. We travelled by train to Tokyo and toured the city. On Tuesday we went to Tokyo Disney Sea which was also heaps of fun and it was great to meet Goofy! We went to two museums (FUN) which were both very interesting; we learnt lots about the culture. The next day we went to a shopping mall called Lalaport which is 17 x bigger than Chartwell and we bought lots of stuff. We also went to Akihabra which is one of biggest technology shops in the world and was really amazing to see. Sadly, we all knew we had to go home the next day after an awesome time with lots of new experiences and new friends but after a 10 hour flight home we were all really excited to see our families again.

NZ National Champion!
Steven Christie has recently won the 2012 National Tae Kwondo Tournament in his division! This event was held at North Shore Event Centre last month. Steven won the final 11-7 and also won gold two weeks later at the Pride Open Tournament held at Manurewa where he won his final 23-3. Congratulations Steven on your fantastic achievements!

Inter-Intermediate Volleyball
On 30th October two teams of MIS girls and boys travelled to Te Awamutu to compete in the annual Inter-Intermediate Volleyball Tournament. The boys team played five games, the competition was tough and, although we didn't win any of our games, we all learned a lot and enjoyed playing some skilled teams. The girls team did really well and finished 4th overall by winning four of their six games which was a great result for them.
