Corinne Pennock Lesson Plan Name: Native Son Unit Lesson (Day Five: Check for Assessment and

Wrapping up Unit Lesson) Class/Subject: American History; 2nd & 4th period Date: 11/25/2011 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: The students will work on short stories modeled off of Native Son that have aspects of race relations, incorporate the Black Belt, and the inequalities in Chicago during the 1930s. This is to examine their understanding of the novel. Students will benefit from this form of differentiated learning in that they will have the ability to be creative and construct a short story that allows them to learn other than listening to lecture. Content Standards: 1D. understands the relationship between the social sciences and other learning areas; 1G. develops interdisciplinary approaches to the teaching of general social science; 2E. understands the tentative nature of interpretations about human actions; 2F. understands the difference between fact and conjecture and between evidence and assertion; 2L. analyzes data from a variety of sources before reaching a general conclusion or interpretation; 14A. understands chronological thinking and periodization; 14D. understands historical context; 14G. explains patterns of historical succession and duration, continuity, and change; 14H. explains events in relationship to historical setting; 21A. understands the use of mental and other maps; 28B. understands social organization in various time periods (e.g., ancient, pre-industrial, industrial, postindustrial); 28C. understands the impact of social customs, cultural values, and norms on behavior; 28D. understands the influence of social class on life decisions; 28E. understands sociological approaches to conformity and deviancy; 29B. recognizes the relationships among the four language arts (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), and knows how to provide opportunities to integrate these through instruction; 29I. plans and teaches lessons to help students develop comprehension of content area materials through instructional practices that include analyzing critically, evaluating sources, and synthesizing and summarizing material. Corinne Pennock Lesson Plan Teachers Goals: To have the students bring a creative aspect to the classroom while still incorporating the social science. Students will have the chance to showcase talent while integrating unit lesson and put historical events in chronological order. Time

Start of Class: Teacher will take attendance of the class and pass out the selected readings from Native Son. Introduction of Lesson: The teacher will explain what is wanted from the students during the activity that they will be doing during the class and pass out the guidelines. Lesson Instruction: The teacher will give students maps, photos of Chicago, and the Black Belt to give students references for their stories. The students will have the class period to create their own historical fictional short story. Students also can use the research they did, any notes they may have taken, and previous worksheets. Assessments/Checks for Understanding: The teacher will check to see how the students are progressing in their short stories. The teacher will answer questions about requirements and check for understanding of the unit. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: Teacher will check to see if students fully understand the concepts covered in the unit lesson. The teacher will do this by asking questions and having students give their views of race relations, Black Belt, and Native Son, along with what they researched. When students are leaving the classroom, the teacher will collect the short stories. Self-Assessment: N/A
