Putnam County Elementary School Media Center Policy & Procedure Guide Purpose of the Policy & Procedure

Guide The purpose of the policy and procedures guide is to provide the users of the library media center a guide to the operation of the school library media program. The guide will be updated as changes are made in the library media center. Media Center Staff Linda Walker Media Specialist & Instructional Technologist Nancy Whitesides Media Center Paraprofessional Mission Statement The mission of the Putnam County Elementary School (PCES) library media center is to assist the learning community in becoming lifelong learners by being a leading resource for information, providing access to informational, educational, and cultural materials in a variety of formats and technologies, and to stimulate an interest in and promote the love of reading. Goals - To provide services to students, faculty, and staff that will enhance the instructional program within the school. - To provide instructional materials that will stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation, ethical standards, and aesthetic and moral values. - To provide materials representative of many religious, ethnic, and cultural groups and their contributions to our mutual heritage. - To promote information literacy.

Library Media Center Hours of Operation - The media center is open 7:30 am 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday for faculty & staff. - The media center is open from 7:35 am 2:55 pm, Monday through Friday for students. Library Media Center Conduct Policy PCES Library Media Center conduct policy is in compliance with PCES school rules with follows: - Follow established school rules and policies - Respect adult authority - Demonstrate respect for self, other, and the property of others - Use quiet voices when in the media center - Take responsibility for damaged/lost materials Circulation Policies Teacher Circulation - Faculty and staff may check out print media center material for a period of one month - Faculty and staff may check out audiovisual material for a period of two weeks

Student Circulation - Students must have a media center issued pass to exchange books. Media passes will be limited to two per classroom in order to maintain an environment that is conducive to the Media Center Mission. Small groups of two to three students may use the media center for research with media center issued research passes. All students must have a signed Acceptable Use form on file in order to use the media center for Internet research. - Students may check out two books - Books are checked out for a ten day time period - Books may be renewed one time - If a student has an overdue book, he/she may not check out another book until that book is returned - Reference material or periodicals may not be checked out by students - Lost or damaged books must be paid for before another book may be checked out Nonschool Owned Material All nonschool owned material that is used at PCES must be submitted for approval to the Media Advisory Committee. Overdue Material Overdue notices will be sent either via E-mail or by the Wednesday Folder on a weekly basis.

Media/Technology Committee A Media/Technology Committee is formed at the beginning of each year. The committee will oversee media center policy and procedures, and advise the media specialist on material purchases in support of the school instructional goals.

Media Classes Georgia state standards require an open, flexible media schedule. The media center is available for individuals, small groups, and/or whole class activities. Throughout the year the media specialist will collaboratively plan with classroom teachers, by grade level, for appropriate grade/subject area integration of media skills instruction.

Selection and Weeding of Media Material Media center materials are selected according to state and district media selection policies. The primary consideration in material selection guidelines is if the purchase of the material will best support the district mission. Purchases are decided on with input from faculty, students, and the school media/technology committee. Weeding of media materials that are dated or in poor condition will be ongoing according to standard acceptable media center policies. Copyright Policy PCES, in recognizing the importance of the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States code) hereby notifies all faculty and staff that any use or reproduction of copyrighted material will be done either with the written permission of the copyright holder or with the bounds of fair use guidelines provided by the copyright act; otherwise, the individual responsibility for use or reproduction may be liable for infringing the copyright under existing laws. Emergency Procedures For emergency situations procedures will be followed as stated in the PCES Emergency Handbook. Fire drill/tornado routes are posted at the front entrance to the Media Center. Requests for reconsideration Procedures outlined in the Putnam County Board of Education Procedure Manual will be followed if a request for reconsideration of material is submitted by a parent, community member, faculty member, or staff member.
