Field Trip To Swarna River Dam

Today at mit we were going for our second Upon our arrival we were taken to see the dam. It was really a wondrous site for all of us. field trip to a water treatment plant and a dam.The dam which we were to visit is built over the Swarna river., i.e. , the major source of water for the city of Manipal. The treatment plant is located around 20 kms from the MIT camous There is a in built powerhouse with such a structure so as to assist the authorities to withdraw the water from the intake source. The River Swarna is a rain fed water source. Water is tapped at two small dams, one at Baje near Hiriyadka and the other near Shiroor, where it is taken through filtration plants and supplied to many towns and villages, including Parkala, besides being Udupis main drinking water source. Swarna also supplies water to many villages along its banks for agricultural purposes.

The Swarna River Dam located near Shiroor in Udupi was a breakthrough in the water problems faced by the city. Water was made available to every home in the city.It improved the overall water level. Treated water supply for a minimum of 18 hours in the town is ensured. In fact out of 10 distribution zones, 9 are under 24*7 water supply. No drinking water scarcity exists during summer seasons. After seeing the dam we were taken inside the compound where all Udupis water supply comes from. There were many complex machines which were doing the work that helped in purifying and supplying the water to the people in Udupi. The treatment of water is a systematic process, and the process is carried out in a series of definite steps strictly, with one proceeding the other.

The treatment of water is a systematic process, and the process is carried out in a series of definite steps strictly, with one proceeding the other. The teacher then dictated us the capacity of the Water Treatment Plant. Its was around 27.24 million litres per day. Then, stepping out of these chambers, we saw the chemical house which stores alum cakes in abundanceAfter that we visited a filter house There were six filter beds and filters comprised of gravel and sand as told by the instructor. It was a very interesting field trip. We all got to learn a lot about how a dam works. We learnt how water can be the solution to our electricity crisis and how hydroelectricity might be the future of electricity. I would like to thanks to our evs teacher and also to MIT for organizing such an eventful and valuable field trip for us. SUBMITTED BYSAURABH SECTION-Q ROLL NO.-83
