Sustainability : Rail advantages go beyond CO2 emissions

Travelling by rail is on average 3-10 times less CO2 intensive than road or air transport (depending on local electricity mix) Rail environmental benefits also include limited land use, reduction of congestion and safety

Alstom Transport Vision on Sustainable Development : Propose attractive rail options to support
modal shift
We believe :
Rail is generally more energy efficient than other modes Rail systems powered by clean electricity will be a key solution to reduce CO2 emissions Rail is also the most environmental friendly mode considering congestion, space use and safety

As a railway multispecialist, we propose:

A broad portfolio of standardized products with high flexibility to offer attractive rail options Complete rail systems with reduced environmental impacts integrating rolling-stock, As a responsible company, and maintenance infrastructures, control equipments we

commit :

P 14

to design and manufacture our products with a view to reducing env. impacts at all stages and to promote a life-cycle approach maximizing benefits over time to make sure our most energyefficient solutions are accessible to all customers

2 pillars of Alstom Transport Sustainability Approach

Reduce our Products Footprint

Supporting our customers to reduce their environmental impacts

Reduce Our Operations Footprint

Reducing environmental impacts of our operations

Developing innovations for high env. performance Designing all products with a view to reducing their environmental impacts all along the life-cycle (Eco-Design) Promoting our Green portfolio and solutions for energy efficient rolling-stock and systems Reducing energy consumption, water consumption and waste production in our facilities (manufacturing and project sites) ISO 14001 for all large manufacturing units Sharing and implementing Good Practices

Optimizing energy consumption in Rolling-Stock :

Focus on Energy efficient Motors
Alstom is leading research on rolling-stock application for Permanent Magnet Motors. First application very high speed railway trains (AGV) now expanding to other Rolling-Stock (Regional trains, TramTrain, Istanbul Tram) Weight reduction by self-ventilation + Improved energy efficiency + More braking energy recovery
ASM (Eurostar) Mass (kg) Energy efficiency Weight/Power ratio (Kg/ KW) 1260 93% 1.23 PMM (AGV) 780 96% 0.87

Intensive test already performed (world record, test benches, prototype train..)
=> WEIGHT TO POWER RATIO REDUCED BY 30 %

Integrating in urban landscape and surroundings

Protecting cities architectural heritage
Wireless solutions enabling tramways CITADIS to be integrated harmoniously into their urban environment with GPS (Ground-Power Supply), or via onboard batteries. City identity reflected in design

Reducing noise emissions

Aeroacoustic modelling on rollingstock, simulation tools for optimized infrastructure Redesigned HVAC (resonators, microperforated ducts) for reduced interior noise (e.g. Citadis Rotterdam ) New wheel dampers for high-speed and metro to avoid squeal Re-design of traction motor rotor (new Pendolinos, metros) Infrastructure : new high attenuation sleepers with rigid hull (noise reduced by
more than 20 DB for human ear)

- 3 dB 0 - 2 dB

3D Simulation of housing : thermal , aeraulic, acoustics

High-Attenuation Sleepers

Improving recyclability and integrating bio-materials

We are able to propose innovative solutions to : Eliminate harmful substances and materials that can be present in fluids, oils, refrigerating gases, braking pads Improve recyclability :
METROPOLIS and CITADIS trams are now at least 90% recyclable, with levels of 95% achieved in the Hamburg metro. Stockholms suburban CORADIA Lirex train holds the record for recyclability at 98%

Maximize use of biomaterials from renewable resources such as wood, hemp and wool as thermal and/or sound insulation in trains. We deliver today trains with 100% water-based paints
