Innovation in biomass technology

As an academic partner, DLSU will serve as a resource for the exchange of ideas on election-related concerns by hosting forums and encouraging discussions among its students. WITH THE AIM TO INTEGRATE ADVANCED AUTOMATED CONTROLS WITH LOCAL BIOMASS BRIQUETTING, a team from the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department developed a prototype machine that produces optimal biomass briquettes. This study earned second place in the nationwide 2012 Best Undergraduate Engineering Design Contest hosted by the Philippine Association for Technological Education (PATE). The awarding was held at the PATE Annual Convention last September 22 at the Century Park Hotel. An innovation in local research for fuel production, the project aims to optimize the efficiency of various local biomass briquettes. Briquettes are formed with adjustable parameters and the machine operations are actuated through a control panel, contrary to the existing manual machines. Experiments were conducted to characterize the machine and verify its accuracy. Moreover, the machine offers a safer production process, has a great potential for commercialization, and contributes to the energy sustainability of the country. Also awarded with an Outstanding Thesis during graduation, the winning team was composed of ME students Caroline Mae Janairo, Robert John Guting, Tristan Joseph Guanlao, and Rey Andrew Gatmaitan, together with ME Chair Dr. Alvin Chua as their thesis adviser.
