PART B Answer the following questions on the page provided. The word bank and the posters can help you.
1/ CONTENT
What is the artwork of? I think it is of the painter with somebody he knows maybe somebody important to him. What do you think it might be about? I think it might be about the painter in shock because his friend is holding his shoulder. I also think the friend might be dead. What is your first one-word response? Interesting When do you think it was made? I think it was made in 1518

2/ FORM:
What does the picture look like? I looks like a person in shock of a ghost maybe but is only expresses it using his body and not his face. What kinds of shapes and textures make up the picture? I think that it is made of round shapes. I also think there is a dark background and it becomes lighter in the top left corner. How would this picture look in a different material, size, or color? If the picture was a different size it would not look as powerful. Also the coloring makes the picture very deep and meaningful also it makes it interesting to look at. Is it big or small? Is it the size of something in your house? The painting is a ok size. I would think that it would be a b it bigger than our Henry Matisse canvass from year 7. Make some comparisons with familiar objects. The painting doesnt really include many objects but it is a self-portrait of the artist and his Friend who is thought to also be his fencing master. Is there a front and a back? There is only a front of the painting because there is no back in the painting. Also if there were to be a back you only be able to the back of two men. Are you meant to look at it from different angles? I dont think so because I think that the artist shows this angle because it was affective and it is what make this painting strong. Is it figurative (based on the human figure) or abstract (about colour, shape and form)? The painting is based on the human figure because there are no shapes only painting of the artist and his friend.

3/ PROCESS
How do you think it was made? I think the artist imaged himself with his friend holding his shoulder in comfort when he was it bad times. What materials do you think were used? I think the artist used paint and a paintbrush because during the renascences there I think one type of painting and it was pain. What is it made of? I think paint. Do you know of any artists who work in this medium today? I dont know any. What tools do you think the artist used? What techniques? I think he used a paintbrush and used the one stroke techniques to make the painting neat and clear.

4/ MOOD: What do I SEE/ THINK/ WONDER?

Puzzling confusing accurate amusing sad angry thoughtful busy angular mysterious fragmented curvy messy precise happy still

5/ THINK Why do you think the artist created this?

Why did he or she create it in this way? I think the artist created this painting to show that you

are never alone even when times are tough because there will always be a friend with you. I think that he made it like this to show that his side is dark and sad. The artist also made the side with his friend lighter as if his friend is the answer to the artists problems or that the friend is there for the artist not caring how bleak the times are. 6/ What do you WONDER? I I wonder how the artist created the painting this way and I also wonder why he did it. Was he in trouble, was he starving, or was he just trying to send out a message. I wonder why he choose these colors or why did he ever choose the friend and not somebody else.

7/ What questions might you have if you could talk to the artist or the person in the artwork? Why did
you make this and who is your friend or is he somebody else important to you. WORD BANK

MEANING

The artwork to me looks like a person the painter is in shock because he is seeing a friend he did not expect to see. The friend the artist sees may have been important to him. My first word response which led to me choosing this painting was that it look interesting and I didnt see paintings like this often. The painting was made in 1518 during the earlier times of the renaissance when the church still had power but was losing which has made me thinking that the friend of the artist might be Jesus. The painting looks like a person in shock but he is only using his body language and only a little bit of his facial language to express it. There are only two shapes and they are both human but the background is dark a only lights up the friends head which shows that it still has a medieval looking background to the painting. The painting size is what helps make it look powerful especially the colouring because the colouring brings out the human figures a lot which makes them look powerful and meaningful. The size looks as if it were the same size as the Henry Matisse canvases but a bit bigger. The painting only includes two objects which are the artist and his friend who is also thought to be his fencing master. There is only a front because the back would just show the back of the humans in the painting. I think that the painting was made to look at this perspective because it looks the strongest and it wont look as powerful from a different angle. The painting is based on human figure because the painting only has two humans and a background. The painting was made from paint. I dont think the artist used any medium. I think that the artist sat down with an empty canvas imagined his friend with him and started painting using paint. The artist used a paintbrush and paint. He might have used the on stroke technique When I look at the painting I think that it is amusing, mysterious, still, confusing, puzzling and sad but I still enjoy looking at the painting because it is just interesting. I think the artist created this painting to show that you are never alone even when times are tough because there will always be a friend with you. I think that he made it like this to show that his side is dark and sad. The artist also made the side with his friend lighter as if his friend is the answer to the artists problems or that the friend is there for the artist not caring how bleak the times are. I wonder how the artist created the painting this way and I also wonder why he did it. Was he in trouble, was he starving, or was he just trying to send out a message. I wonder why he choose these colours or why did he ever choose the friend and not somebody else. Why did you make this and who is your friend or is he somebody else important to you.
