Introduction

Thisreportisthefirstdeliverableinaprojectdesignedtouncoverthestrengths,spacesandcommunity
assetsinCalgarysNorthCentralCommunities.
Theprojectwillincludecollectingdatafromprimarysourcessuchasinterviewsandcommunity
meetings,andsecondarydata,suchasthedemographicdataprovidedinthisreport.
Collectingthedemographicdatafirstallowsustounderstandwhoweshouldfocusonforourinterview
andcommunitymeetingsinordertoensurethatthepopulationsofthecommunitiesincludedinthe
studyarerepresentedfairly.
ThedataprovidedinthisreportareexclusivetothecommunitiesthattheSteeringCommitteeforthis
projecthasidentifiedintheearlystagesoftheproject.Thestatisticsincludedarebynomeans
exhaustive.Anyomissions(withintheparametersofourstudy)orerrorsarepurelyunintentional.Every
efforthasbeenmadetopresentvalidandreliabledata.
SinceourprojectusesamodifiedParticipatoryActionResearch(PAR)approach,weinvitefeedback
fromcommunitymembersandinparticular,fromtheSteeringCommitteeofthisproject.The
implicationsofthisdataforaPARprojectarenotedattheendofthereport.

ThedataforthisreportwasdrawnmainlyfromtheCityofCalgarysCommunityProfiles,asreportedby
thesocialresearchpolicydepartmentoftheCityofCalgaryusingthe2011civiccensusand2006federal
census.4Themostrecentfederalcensuswasconductedin2011butcommunityleveldatawill
unfortunatelynotbeavailableuntilfall2013,soinsomecategoriesthe2006censusdataisthemost
recentavailable.Insomecases,thecommunityprofilesdonotincludeall2011civiccensusdata,in
whichcase,theoriginalcensusreportwasconsulted.5Forhomeprices,reportingfromtheCalgaryReal
EstateBoard(CREB)wasused,andforcrime,theCalgaryPoliceServiceCrimesWebMapping
Applicationwasconsultedforthemostrecentsixmonthperiod.
TheCanadianCouncilonSocialDevelopmenthasalsoestablishedtheCommunityDataPrograminthe
1990s.Thisprogramallowsmunicipalitiesandcommunityagenciesandnonprofitstoaccess
customizeddatafromStatisticsCanadaandotherprovidersthathelpswhenmonitoringandreporting
onsocialandeconomicdevelopmenttrendswithintheircommunities.Aspenisamemberofthis
programandcanaccessthisinformation.Thispreliminaryreportdoesnotincludethisdataasyet,but
thisprogramwillbeconsultedbeforethefinalreportissubmitted.

Ofcourse,therecanbenotypicalresidentsofthecommunitiesunderstudy.Eachoneofthe77,946
peoplewholivethereisuniqueandisaresultofbothgenesandupbringing.However,when
consideringthedemographicdataavailableforthecommunities,acompositeprofilecanbecollected
fromtheavailabledatawhenconsideringaveragesandmediansacrosstheninecommunities.
Acompositeprofileofatypicalresidentofthesecommunitiesfindstheperson:

Isbetween35and44;
Isemployed;
Drivesalonetowork;
Hasonechildlivingathome(1.1);
Hasahouseholdincomeofapproximately$106,254;6
Haseitherahighschooldiplomaorauniversitydegree;
Ismarried;
IsCanadianbornandCaucasian;
Ownshis/herownhome.

Thisfigureisextrapolatedfrom2006censusdata,whichshowedamediaincomeforthecommunitiesof
$79,830.However,by2010,themedianincomeforCalgaryhadgoneupto$89,490or33.1%
(www.statcan.gc.ca/tablestableaux/sumsom/l01/cst01/famil107aeng.htm)whichwouldbein2010dollars
adjustedforinflation.Therefore,becauseofthevastchangeinmedianincomesincelastdataavailablein2005,
themedianincomehasbeenincreasedby33.1%forthisreport.Thiscanbeframedonlyasabestguessnumber
andactual2006incomefigurescanbefoundintheAppendix.

Observations

Beyondthesehighlevelcompositecharacteristics,therearemoredetailedobservationsaboutthisarea
ofCalgarythatcanbemade.Thesearegleanedfromvariouspopulationcharacteristics,includingage,
gender,education,employment,income,households,dwellings,etc.Therearealsocertainspecial
populationsthatarehighlightedwithinthisreport,asanattempttouncoversomeofthemorediverse
aspectsoftheareaspopulation.

5.1 Population
5.1.1.Communitypopulations
Thetotalpopulationforthestudyareais77,946,or7.1%ofCalgarystotal2011population.
PanoramaHillsisthelargestcommunitywith19,851residents,followedbyCoventryHills
(15,722)andHiddenValley(11,657).ThesmallestcommunityisCountryHillsVillagewith2,342
residents,followedbyCountryHillsat3,720.Threeofthelargest20communitiesinCalgaryare
foundwithinthisstudyarea:PanoramaHills(1);CoventryHills(7)andHiddenValley(16).

TheageprofileofthecommunitiesalsomirrorsthatofCalgaryquiteclosely.Theonlyslight
differenceisthatthemostcommonagerangefortheareaunderstudyisbetween35and44,
whileforCalgaryitisslightlyyoungeratbetween25and34.Theonlytwocommunitiesthat
mirrorCalgarysmostcommonagerangeareCountryHillsVillageandEvanston/Creekside.
CountryHillsVillagealsohasthelowestnumber(250)andpercentage(10.7%)ofchildren,while
alsobeinghometothehighestpercentageofseniors(28%)andthesecondhighestnumberat
656.PanoramaHillsactuallyhasthehighestnumberofresidentsover65livinginthe
community(943),althoughthisonlyequatesto4.8%ofthetotalcommunitypopulation.
ThecommunitywiththemostchildrenisalsoPanoramaHills(6,201or31.2%ofthecommunity
population).Evanston/Creeksideactuallyhasthehighestpercentageofchildrenlivingthereat
32.4%or1,909children.HiddenValleyalsohasahighpercentageofchildrenat31.9%or3,714.
Therearealso6,099(7.8%ofthetotalareapopulation)childrenundertheageoffourlivingin
allofthecommunities.

general(39,016female;38,930male).Thereisanotabledifferenceinchildrenunder19,where

Theeducationalstatusoftheresidentsinthestudyareatracksverycloselywiththoseof
Calgaryingeneral.In2006,closetoonequarterofresidentshadeitherahighschooldiploma
(25%)orauniversitydegree(23.3%)listedastheirhighestlevelofeducation.Thisisverysimilar
totheaverageCalgaryratesofhighschool(25.6%)anduniversityeducation(25.3%).Therewas
a17.3%rateofarearesidentsheldnodegree,diplomaorcertificate,whichwasagaincloseto
the18.1%Calgaryaverage.
Withinthecommunities,Evanston/Creeksidehasthemosthighlyeducatedresidents,with
30.9%holdingauniversitydegree,withanother25.4%holdingacollegediploma.Only10.9%
hadnodegree,diplomaorcertificateand18.5%hadonlyhighschool.CountryHillsVillagehad
thelowestpercentageofuniversityeducatedresidents(16.9%),followedbyHarvestHills
(17.6%)andSandstoneValley(19.9%).CountryHillsVillagealsohadthehighestpercentageof
residentswithtradescertifications.

Theemploymentratein2011forthoseovertheageof15inthestudyarea(69.5%)isslightly
higherthanoverallrateforCalgary(65.3%).ThehighestratesareinEvanston/Creekside
(79.6%),CoventryHills(76.5%)andHiddenValley(72.9%).Again,CountryHillsVillage,withits
largeseniorpopulation,hasthelowestemploymentrateatjust50.6%,followedbySandstone
Valley(65.4%)andMacEwanGlen(68.6%).

5.4 Income12
Themedianhouseholdincomefigurescomefrom2005data,asreportedinthe2006census.
Calgaryexperiencedasignificanteconomicboomafter2005,andassuchthe2005figuresare
notreflectiveofcurrentconditions.StatisticsCanadareportedin2006thattheCalgaryaverage
householdincomewas$67,238;by2010,thisfigurehadincreasedto$89,49013which
representsa33.1%increase.Asaresult,twoversionsofthemedianincomearepresented
here:oneisthe2005data,whichisfirm,whiletheotheristhe2005figuresincreasedby33.1%.
Althoughthisisnotscientific(asforexample,CountryHillsVillagehasahigherpercentageof
seniorsonfixedincomes),itwillprovideacloserreflectionofcurrentestimatedmedian
incomes.
ThehighestmedianincomeratesarefoundinHiddenValley($89,0442005;$119,4192010),
PanoramaHills($89,0442005;$118,5182010),MacEwanGlen($87,9432005;$117,052
2010)andHarvestHills($87,2002005;$116,0632010).Thelowestratesbyfararefoundin
CountryHillsVillage($50,9602005;$67,8282010),againbecauseofthehighpopulationof
seniorslivingonfixedincomes.
Thereisasignificantlylowerrateoflowincomehouseholdsinthestudyarea(7.3%)thanacross
Calgary(14.2%).ThehighestratesarefoundinSandstoneValley(8.5%)followedbyMacEwan
Glen(8.3%)andEvanston/Creekside(8.3%).ThelowestratesarefoundinPanoramaHills
(5.1%)andHarvestHills(5.9%).

Thevastmajorityofresidentsovertheageof15inthestudyareaaremarriedcouples(59.8%)
asof2006,whilethosewhowerenevermarriedarenextat29.8%.Thisdiffersfromtheaverage
acrossCalgaryas35.6%werenevermarried,while49.7%weremarried.Therewasan7.9%
divorceorseparationrate,while7.8%ofcoupleswerelivingcommonlaw.Only2.6%of
residentswerewidowed.
PanoramaHillsandEvanston/Creeksidehadthehighestrateofmarriedcouplesat64.9%.
HiddenValleywasnextat62.6%.CountryHillsVillagehadthelowestpercentageofmarried
couplesat48.8%,andalsothehighestpercentageofwidowedindividualsat14.1%,whichisnot
surprisingconsideringtheprofileofolderresidentslivinginthecommunity.

Asreportedinthe2006federalcensus,therearealso5%ofresidentsoftheareawhoareliving

anaverageof16.4%ofhouseholdsheadedbyaloneparent,comparedto23.5%forallofCalgary.
ThereisahighpercentagelivinginCountryHillsVillage(36.8%),whichistheonlycommunity
higherthantheCalgaryaverage.Thelowestpercentageofloneparentfamiliesarefoundin
Evanston/Creekside(9.7%),followedbyPanoramaHills(11.4%).16

Therewere27,324dwellingsinthestudyareain2011,whichisdistributedinamannerthat
closelymirrorsthepopulationsoftheninecommunities.Therearefarmoresinglefamilyhomes
(SFH)inthisarea(78.3%)thanexistonaverageacrossCalgary(57.9%).Conversely,therearealso
fewerapartments(8.1%),townhouses(8.5%),andduplexes(4.4%)thanintherestofCalgary.
CoventryHillshasthehighestpercentageofSFHwith94.6%,followedbyEvanston/Creeksideat
90.8%andHiddenValleyat89%.CountryHillsVillagehasnoSFH,onlyapartmentsand
townhouses.
Ownershipratesarealsohigherinthestudyarea(86.8%)thanintherestofCalgary(72.8%).The

Therearenumeroussubpopulations,orgroupsofpeople,withinthesecommunitiesthatcanbe
revealedusingbothfederalandciviccensusdata.Thereisademonstrateddesireonthepartofthe
communitytoincludetheseresidentsinthestudy.
Diversityisatermthatincludesavarietyofdifferentpersonalcharacteristics.Forthepurposesof
thisreport,thefocuswillbeonthefollowingcategories:immigrant,visibleminority,Aboriginal,
disability,andseniors.

6.1 ImmigrantResidents
Calgaryhasexperiencedtremendousgrowthinpopulationoverthepastdecade,andmuchof
thisgrowthisduetoimmigrantschoosingthecityastheirnewCanadianhome.In2010,the
totalimmigrantpopulationofCalgarywasestimatedtobe304,000,oralmost30%,andis
expectedtoclimbto500,000by2020.25
Asof2006,thecommunitiesinthisstudyhaveonaverage27.9%oftheirresidentsidentifiedas
immigrants.ThehighestratesofimmigrantsarefoundinthecommunitiesofPanoramaHills
(41.7%)andSandstoneValley(38.8%).Thelowestpercentageofimmigrantresidentsisfoundin
HarvestHills(19.4%).Whenconsideringnumbers,againPanoramaHillsleadsthewaywith
4,255immigrantresidents,followedbyHiddenValley(3,130)andCoventryHills(2,900).

6.2 VisibleMinorityResidents
ResidentswhoidentifyasvisibleminoritycanbeeitherimmigrantorCanadianborn.According
tothe2006federalcensus,22.2%ofCalgaryspopulation,or237,900,belongedtoavisible
minoritygroup,whichisthefourthhighestpercentageinthecountrybehindToronto(42.9%),
Vancouver(41.7%)andAbbotsford(22.8%).Onlyoneinthreevisibleminorityresidentswere
Canadianborn,whiletwothirdswereimmigrants.26
Withintheareaunderstudy,therewereatotalof20,150whoidentifiedasvisibleminorityin
2006,or32.6%,whichisahigherratethantheaveragerateforCalgary.Therearesignificant
differenceswithinthecommunities,withPanoramaHillshavingoverhalfofitspopulation
identifyingasvisibleminority(52.6%),followedbySandstoneValley(45.3%)andCountryHills
(24.4%).ThecommunitywiththelowestpercentageofvisibleminorityresidentswasCountry
HillsVillage(15.1%),whichwastheonlycommunitytoreportapercentagelowerthanthe
Calgaryaverage.

doesnotprovideafurtherbreakdownoftheAboriginalpopulationastothesegroups.
TheAboriginalpopulationiswidelydistributedacrossCalgary,withnoonecommunityhavingan
Aboriginalpopulationexceeding12%.28Withinthecommunitiesinthestudyarea,the
Aboriginalpopulationisquitesmallat2%oftheareaspopulation.Thelargestpopulationof

Thereisatotalpopulationof4,591residentswhowere65oroverinthestudyarea,which
equatesto5.9%ofthetotalareapopulation.ThisisslightlylowerthantheaverageCalgaryrate
of9.8%.Therearemorewomenover65(2,495)thanmen(2,096).CountryHillsVillagehasthe
