Volume 12, Number 48

Well Ive Never Been to Heaven, But Ive Been to ...

2 Corinthians 12:4 he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. A few years ago, a preacher friend wrote an article about heaven and dogs. It stirred a bit of controversy. I think he likes to stir the pot a bit from time to time. Anyway, confronted with the question of whether there will be dogs in heaven (a common question asked by fanatic dog lovers), he offered a possibly affirmative reply. The theology of the question and an affirmative answer gets a bit murky. So, hearing some of the criticism, I took the opportunity to call my friend and ask him about the message. He said, Brother Dyer, you and I dont really know what heaven is like, but we know it will be what brings us joy. He wasnt saying that dogs will inherit eternal life in heaven; just that heavens life will bring us joy. I think he has a point that strikes home. After all, many of the pictures we have been given are intended to impress us with a sense of wonder and beauty. They are not intended to be literal, but to elevate our desire to be there. Heaven is comfort, security, and perfection in every way. It is the place of God. I think of heaven in the likeness of Thanksgiving. When I was a young boy, Thanksgiving was the most special holiday of the year. For days, Mother would be preparing some of the food. Pies would be baked. Dressing would be prepared. We would all be excited. Then when the day arrived, there would be all the activity of getting ready. There might be a football game in the yard with friends, or a little watching of professionals on television. Shortly after noon, the meal would be placed on the table, and it would be a banquet of sights, smells, and tastes. Just before the meal, my father would put-on a record of Christmas music, by the Percy Faith Orchestra. Then we would sit to eat that great meal. Putting it all together, there was warmth, security, love, and abundance of the best. So, there it is. I know it is just family and a meal on one day. Still, it has so much, and those are the qualities that draw us to heaven. Russ
