In 1620, a group of people who were called the Pilgrims sailed from England to America.

They travelled on a ship called the Mayflower. These people had decided to start a new life in America. They arrived at a place on the north-east coast of America. They called this place Plymouth. However, life was not easy at first. They were very far from home and knew very little about the new land. To make things worse, the first winter was terribly cold. Many of the pilgrims got sick and died. Fortunately, the Native Americans who lived there were very kind and helped them. They taught them how to grow corn and other plants. Besides, they gave them medicine to treat and cure their illnesses. They also taught them how to hunt for food and showed them how they could build better houses. The pilgrims worked very hard and their crops grew. In November 1621, all the pilgrims had food and a home. To show their gratitude, they decided to invite the Native Americans to a dinner. That dinner lasted for three days and was the first Thanksgiving. Nowadays, Thanksgiving is an annual holiday celebrated in the U.S.A. on the 4th Thursday of November.
