QUESTION 4 A water turbine is to develop 5 MW at 120 rpm using a head of 32 m from a hydro dam. A scale model test conducted at 210 rpm with head of 3.6 m uses a flow of 0.22 m 3/s at the point of maximum efficiency. Determine the following,

Question 5 A metal pipe of 50 mm diameter has a wall thickness of 25 mm, it is insulated by a 13 mm thick insulation material. The pipe metal material has thermal conductivity of 52 w/mK while the insulation material thermal conductivity is 0.04 w/mK. The pipe carries steam at 180 deg C and the outside air ambient temperature is 18 deg C. The surface heat transfer coefficient on the inside of the pipe is 15 w/m2K and on the outside of the insulation material is 10 w/m2K. Calculate (a) all the thermal resistances of the pipe. (12marks) (b) the heat loss rate per unit length of pipe. (8 marks)
