Signals and Systems (CEN-311) FALL 2012

Description:

Bahria University, Islamabad

'Signals and Systems,' aims to prepare students with the instinctive and conventional skills needed for evaluating signals and systems. Students will not only develop an understanding of the principles of LTI continuous-time and discrete-time systems and its association with signals, but they will also study the mathematical representations and methods for analyzing signals and systems. The course combines lectures and Matlab simulation exercises to expose students to the theories and concepts of both continuous-time and discrete-time forms of signals and systems. Topics include types of Signals and Systems, Impulse response / Differential equation models of Continuous-time (CT) systems, CT and Discrete-time (DT) Convolution, CT Fourier Series, CT Fourier Transform (CTFT), DT signals and systems, z-Transform. The students will be required to hand in regular assignments and attend quizzes (announced/unannounced) throughout the semester.

Goals/Objectives:

To understand the characteristics of continuous time and discrete-time signals and systems, and the various methods and approaches used to analyze signals and systems To understand the fundamental characteristics of LTI continuous-time and discrete-time systems and their effect on signals. To analyze CT signals and systems in time-domain using models of Impulse response, and Differential Equation e.g. calculate output for given input and system information, To analyze CT signals and systems in frequency-domain To develop the mathematical skills to analyze signals and systems using the Fourier and z transforms. To prepare students for upper-level courses in communication systems, control systems, and digital signal processing To enable the students to have a sufficient experience in utilizing MATLAB to simulate and solve problems relating to signals and systems
