Lesson Plans for Using UDL Book in Class as Instruction

The UDL book can be used either as a standalone module for a student to do on his or her own and filling in the questions or by a teacher as support material in teaching about the benefits of student organizations. If you use this module as support material, there are places built in where you can have students answer the questions within the book and then print the notes out at the end. If you prefer for the students to write the notes, however, the notes sheet is attached to this document. Following are the notes on how I envision this module being used in class: Page 1. This is the title page; there is a 1 minute audio file that has calming music if you would like to play it to get things started. Page 2. Table of contents Page 3. Standards and Objectives for Day One. Have the standards and Objectives read aloud to the students Page 4. Let the students watch this 5 minute video and then moderate a class discussion that allows students to discuss the organizations they belong to now and how they feel they benefit from these organizations. You should also offer benefits you see them. Page 5. Allow students to watch the video on FBLA. As they watch, they should write down three things they saw in the video that looks interesting or that they were surprised about. Page 6. Students should read the embedded document and think about how FBLA compares with other organizations they are familiar with. Feel free to print this document to make it easier for students to read. It should be updated yearly. Page 7. Students will create a Venn Diagram on their note sheet or used the one on the Notesheet below to compare and contrast FBLA with other organizations they are familiar with or that they saw in the video. Page 8. End of Day One. Student should reflect on what they learned today and write down 3 things they learned about being in a student organization in complete sentences.

Page 9. Standards and Objectives for Day Two. Have the standards and Objectives read aloud to the students Page 10. This should be a quick review of the benefits students glean from being a part of a student organization. Page 11. Students should watch the video about SC FBLA to learn more about being a part of FBLA in South Carolina. Page 12. Moderate a classroom discussion about the video. What did the students find most interesting? What do they have questions about? Do they think this organization would meet their needs? Page 13. Pass out applications for FBLA to the students and encourage them to join. Page 14. Discuss the membership Dues and why they are important. Focus on the how the local dues help the chapter accomplish their goals. Inform the students what the local dues are so that they can add that to what they need to have to join. Allow students to look at and fill out the membership forms if they are interested in joining. Let students know when and where the meetings will be held. Page 15. This is your question and answer page.

Suggested Culminating Activity:

Have the students create posters (in groups or individually) that describe the benefits of either student organizations in general or FBLA in specific. This allows students the ability to focus on FBLA if they are interested or focus on student organizations in general if FBLA is not for them. Also, this allows you to use the student generated posters as membership drive posters.
