MAT 100 - Intermediate Algebra AC2 3 Credits Fall 2012 Instructor: Brandon Dougherty Email: bdougher@mc3.edu Phone: 215-619-7441 Office: Parkhouse 8 Office Hours: Tuesday 9:45am to 11:15am, Thursday 9:45am to 11:15am Textbook: MAT 100 Intermediate Algebra Fourth Custom Edition for Montgomery County Community College by Richard Kern. Room and Time: Parkhouse 119, MWF 8:00am to 8:55am Course Description: This intermediate algebra course reviews and extends the material taught in MAT 011. It is appropriate for students who have taken MAT 011 or who have had an elementary algebra course in high school. It will prepare students for MAT 125, MAT 131, MAT 140 and/or MAT 161. Topics include a brief review of introductory algebra, introduction to functions, factoring, algebraic fractions, radicals, fractional exponents, the Pythagorean theorem, functional notation, graphing, quadratic equations, logarithms, systems of linear equations, and word problems applications. A graphing calculator is required. Instruction will be presented using a TI-84+. Prerequisite: Math placement test recommendation of "UND 116" (under MAT 116 or MAT 011, with a minimum grade of "C".) Learning Objectives: To obtain a knowledge of basic algebraic operations. To understand the concepts of function, domain, range, and inverse. To be able to graph linear functions and evaluate function notation. To be able to factor and to both simplify expressions and solve equations by factoring. To be able to simplify rational expressions and solve rational equations. To be able to solve quadratic equations and graph quadratic functions. To be able to simplify radicals, solve radical equations, and interpret i-notation. To be able to solve systems of linear equations. To be able to graph exponential and logarithmic functions and solve associated equations. To be able to solve word problems involving distance, rate, time, variation, investment, Pythagorean Theorem, and regression. To be able to use the TI-84+ graphing calculator on relevant concepts.

Determination of Grade: There will be four in-class Chapter tests plus a cumulative final exam. The average of the four chapter tests will count as 72% of your grade. There will also be four Quizzes. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. The average of the other three Quiz grades will count as 9% of your grade. The final exam will count as 15% of your grade. Attendance and participation will count for the final 4% of your grade. Letter grades are determined from the weighted average as follows: A 93-100 C+ 77-79 A- 90-92 C 70-76 B+ 87-89 D 60-69 B 83-86 F below 60 B- 80-82

Blackboard: You are expected to access blackboard. Lecture notes will be posted in COURSE DOCUMENTS, homework assignments along with quiz and exam information and dates to be given will be posted in ASSIGNMENTS, and your grades will be recorded in the CHECK GRADE area. If you miss class, I will check blackboard to see if you have logged in to keep current with the lecture and assignments. Test Make-up Policy: There will be no make-up exams. The first missed test is not made up but is replaced with the final exam grade; any succeeding missed test is a zero. The lowest quiz grade is dropped so a missed quiz will be the one that is dropped; any succeeding missed quiz is a zero. Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend all classes and arrive on time. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what was covered. You will be held responsible for learning the material that was missed. If you know that you will be unable to attend a class, please notify me by email. While in class, please put your phones away and turn them on silent. If you need to use your phone for any reason, please step outside so to not disrupt any other students. Withdrawal Policy: I will not sign a withdrawal form beyond the date when an instructors signature becomes required unless written permission to do so has been granted previous to that deadline. The opportunity to withdraw beyond the official deadline is a privilege for students who are working hard and do not know if they will pass at the official deadline or are faced with unexpected circumstances beyond that deadline which prevent them from completing the course. I will not sign a form for any student that does not regularly attend class. Under no circumstances will I sign a withdrawal form for a student who has taken the final exam. Audit Policy: Students who wish to audit this course must see me by Wednesday September 5th.
