This Quick start guide contains an abbreviated set of setup instructions designed to
help you quickly unpack and set up a standard system. Users unfamiliar with this IBM
hardware should use the fully detailed setup instructions found in the IBM Systems
Hardware Information Center. For details about how to access the information center,
see task 9 Finish your system setup.
Note: The fully populated enclosure weighs in excess of 51 lbs. (23 kg).
You should have at least two people available to lift and install the server
into the rack.
Tools needed
Flathead screwdriver
2 Inventory
5 screws
If you are installing your system unit into a new rack, ensure you have
3.1 completed the unpacking instructions that were provided with the rack.
If your system unit is already installed in a rack, skip to task 7 Cable the
HMC and the system unit.
Use the wrench that was provided with your rack to level the rack by raising
3.3 or lowering the front and back leveling feet A.

4 Install the system rail assemblies
If you do not have enough space around your rack to open the front and back
doors completely, remove the doors before starting this task to allow adequate
access.
Determine where in the rack to place the system unit. This system unit
4.1 occupies two EIA units. Remove any filler panels necessary to allow
adequate access to the location where you will install your system unit.

2. From the back of the rack, place the front rack flange E between the
front rail flange F and the retracted front alignment pins D. Press the
release tab A to extend the pins D into the holes.
3. Align the back alignment pins with the correct holes in the back rack-
flange E and press the latch assembly release tab A to extend the pins
into the back of the rack.
4. Ensure that the pins D are in the correct holes and that the system rail
assembly is level.

5.2 Lift the system unit, and position it over the extended rails.
5.3 Align the slots B on the system unit chassis with the tabs A on the rails.
Lower the system unit onto the rails, ensuring that the slots B and tabs A
5.4
align correctly, and the system unit is securely seated onto the rails.

Tip: If space is limited inside the rack, slide the system unit out partway to
install the cable-management arm.
From the back of the rack, use pin A to affix the cable-management arm E
6.2 to the left rail-management arm flange attached to the rack frame D.
Use the second pin A to affix the other end of the cable-management arm E
6.3 to the flange C attached to the sliding portion of the left system rail
assembly B.
7 Cable the HMC and the system unit
If you are using a rack-mounted HMC, these steps assume that it is already
installed in the rack.
If you need to install the HMC into the rack, follow the instructions in the IBM
Systems Hardware Information Center, and return to this guide when you are ready
to begin cabling your HMC. For details about how to access the information center,
see task 9 Finish your system setup.
If you are using any optional adapters for the HMC, connect the cables to
7.1 the appropriate adapter connectors in the PCI slots of your system unit
and HMC.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the HMC and to
7.6 the Ethernet port labeled HMC1 on the system unit.
Note: For a stand-alone HMC, use the integrated Ethernet port. For the 7310-
CR2 rack-mounted HMC, use the bottom-right Ethernet port. For the 7310-CR3
rack-mounted HMC, use the left port of the two planar board Ethernet ports.
7.7 If using an external modem, plug the power cord into the modem.
Plug the power cords for the monitor, HMC, and external modem into a
7.8 power source. Do not connect the system unit to a power source until
instructed to do so.
Attention: You must start and configure your HMC before you connect
your system unit to a power source.
Route the cables through the cable-management arm on the system unit and
7.9 secure the cables with the straps provided.
You have completed the basic setup. Go to task 9 Finish your system setup.
8 Cable the system unit and access the ASMI
If you are using an HMC, you can access the Advanced System Management
Interface (ASMI) through the HMC. Do not complete the steps in this task. Continue to
task 9 Finish your system setup.
The ASMI is an interface to the service processor that is required in order to perform
general and administrator-level service tasks, such as reading service processor error
logs, reading vital product data, setting up the service processor, and controlling the
system power.
Cabling the ASMI is not required at this time. However, to perform the service tasks
listed above, you will need to complete this task.
This task assumes that you are using a PC to access the ASMI through a Web
browser. If you are using an ASCII terminal, see the instructions in the IBM Systems
Hardware Information Center. For details about how to access the information center,
see task 9 Finish your system setup.
Connect the power cord from the system unit to a power source, and wait
8.1 for the control panel on the front of the server to display 01.
(R)
Using a PC that has Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, Netscape 7.1, or Opera
8.2 7.23 installed, connect an Ethernet cable from the PC to the port labeled
HMC1 on the back of the system unit. If HMC1 is occupied, use the port
labeled HMC2.
Note: If you do not know how to do this, see the instructions in the IBM
Systems Hardware Information Center. For details about how to access the
information center, see task 9 Finish system setup.
When the login dialog box is displayed, enter either one of the default user
8.5 IDs and passwords:
User ID Password
general general
admin admin
If you are using any optional adapters, connect the cables to the appropriate
8.7 adapter connectors in the PCI slots of your system unit and PC.
Route the cables through the cable-management arm and secure the
8.8 cables with the straps provided.
9 Finish your system setup
You should now access the IBM Systems Hardware Information Center. Follow these
steps to create a customized checklist that will help you configure your server and
console, install software, apply fixes, and establish connections with your service
provider:
From the navigation bar, click IBM Systems Hardware Information Center >
9.3 Initial server setup > Create a customized initial server setup checklist.
Answer the questions in the interactive interview, and follow the procedures in
9.4 the resulting checklist.
If you cannot access the online version of the information center, it is also provided
on a CD with your system (SK3T-8159).
