CHAPTER – 01

INTRODUCTION TO
FRONT OFFICE

1
In a hotel, the department, where guests are checked in and out, payments on accounts are

made and messages are exchanged is known as FRONT OFFICE. It is the department,

which is responsible for the sale of hotel rooms through systematic method of

reservation, the front office in a hotel holds prime importance in a view of the basic

nature of business of a hotel, i.e. to sell rooms. Followed by registration and assigning

rooms to the guests. Nearly 70% of revenue is form front office. The term sale of rooms

means the use of hotel rooms at a price. A room is termed “sold” for the day when a guest

leases the rooms for the stay in a hotel.

The front office in a hotel holds prime importance in view of the basic nature of the

business of a hotel to sell rooms. Revenue collected from the sales of rooms contributes

more than 50 % of the total hotel sales. This department has the prime role of image

building, which is the first and last point of contract of every guest. If one looks in each

component of the front office one could have a better perception of this department.

Thus, the role of front office is to reserve, receive, register, and assign rooms to guests

and act as a continuous source of information to guest during their stay of the hotel.

Front office is an important administrative department of a hotel. The whole image of the

hotel depends mainly on this department. It acts as the first point of contract with the

guests and deals with varied information regarding position of accommodation, other

facilities, the programme of the hotel etc. From the guest’s point of view, on arriving the

guests receive all possible help from the staff of this department. During the stay, the

guest receive and leave room keys, mails or information and any other services

concerning, this particular department. At the time of departure the guest closes his

account wit the hotel in collaboration with the front office staff who closes the guest’s

2
bill, collect the due and offer services till the guest leaves the hotel along with a cordial

invitation for his next arrival with the phrases like ‘Thank you very much, Sir/Madam’

for visit, see you again.

From the hotel point of view front office is the main selling point and responsible for

higher occupancy. The profitability of the front office is the major percentage of profit of

the whole hotel. It is the front office where all charges of the guest are posted to proper

accounts. In doing so it has to deal with many other formalities like credit card, foreign

exchange, traveling cheque, traveling agents’ coupons etc.

AREAS OF FRONT OFFICE

RESERVATION

The Reservation section of the Front Office enables the hotels to improve Room Sales by

offering ‘’Reservations’’ to the perspective guests. Reservation is a process by which a

reservationist offers future accommodation to the guest after matching the guest

requirements with the availability. The fact that Room is a highly perishable commodity

should always be kept in mind while refusing booking. An endeavor of this is to have

100% occupancy on a day-to-day basis.

REGISTRATION

Registration of guests is an essential task of front office. In this job the full name and

nationality and some other information’s are to be filled in a form. If the guest is from

overseas, then they have to fill in an additional form. A few hotels requests more

information from guest such as purpose of visit, occupation, proposed method of payment

3
and so on. They fill in such types of information to ensure the smooth, efficient running

of the operation and marketing. The section called ‘Reception’ handles this task.

RECEPTION

Reception is a counter in the Front Office that registers guests. The Hotel Reception plays

a very important role in establishing a good relationship between the Hotel and the Guest.

Some of the duties performed by the Receptionist are- to welcome all the guests and give

them the desired information, to allocate rooms for the guests. Gives the 1st impression to

the guest as to how he would be taken care of during his stay. Proper attention to the

guest is a must. No guest would tolerate negligence towards him at any cost. He ensures

that the Registration card has been duly filled and signed by the guest. To handle special

requests of the guests, handle all complaints in a diplomatic and tactful style and last but

not the least, to handle departures and record no shows.

CASHIER

A cashier is a person who handles all cash or credit transactions for a guest. Some of the

duties performed by a Cashier are-

Presents the bill to the Guest for settlement.

 Handles the safe locker.

Handles Credit cards- both Indian and International.

Ensures safe custody of all cash payments.

He must likewise be well versed with the exchange rates of all currencies and

must be well versed about encashing of foreign currency and travelers checks.

Above all he should be polite and courteous.

4
BELL DESK

Bell desk is situated in the lobby where all Bellboys are positioned and briefing and

debriefing may be conducted. The bell desk is mainly responsible for handling the guest

luggage at the time of guest arrival and departure.

The main functions performed by this section of the Front desk are-

 Continuously update the guest rack.

Provide information to all regarding the hotel and the city.

Receives messages for guests and forward them to the required destination

correctly and quickly.

Handle paging, guest mails, cables, and telegrams.

LOBBY

This area of the Front desk is an area furnished with seating arrangements and is a

meeting place for people common to the hotel is they hotel guests or walk-in. The Front

Office is located within the premises of the Lobby. The Lobby assumes Importance, as it

is the first area of contact of the guest with the hotel.

TELEPHONE EXCHANGE (PBAX)

The operator of the telephone exchange should connect all the incoming as well as

outgoing calls immediately. He/she should control the telephone traffic with patience.

The telephone plays a very important role in running the hotel smoothly and

systematically. Quick And efficient service depends on the mental and physical alertness

of the telephone operator. The PABX operator not only deals with in the hotel but also

5
from outside the hotel. The basic function is not only to provide assistance to the guest

but also attending to the complaints, booking calls to the concerned person and

maintaining records and bills. Once the guest is in the room he is closely associated with

PABX. The importance of telephone is the fact that almost all the departments pass a

large number of messages to different places and people so as to allow the smooth

functioning of the hotel. Thus telephones are also a profit earning department but on a

comparatively smaller scale.

CHAPTER - 3

INTRODUCTION TO
BOTELS

12
INTRODUCTION TO BOTELS

A Botel is a boat that has been designed or modified to be used primarily as a human

dwelling.Botels are referred as houseboats across the world. Some houseboats are not

motorized, because they are usually moored, kept stationary at a fixed point.

The main idea behind the concept of a houseboat is the fact it provides a haven for those

who like to spend a quite holiday, away from the noise and bustle of the cities.

USE OF BOTELS/ HOUSEBOATS

Houseboats are common as permanent dwellings in Southeast Asia; in some other areas,

they may serve more frequently as secondary or vacation homes or for tourism.

AS RECREATION

Houseboating is a very popular recreational activity for groups of people of all ages

aboard houseboats of all varieties ranging from more modest 30-40 foot boats to 70 foot-

plus luxury houseboat models. Houseboating is an appealing and rewarding outdoor

experience for many reasons:

Great variety of beautiful terrain depending on lake and time of year. See the

houseboating lake section below to learn more about some of the larger houseboat lakes.

A multitude of water-based recreation options are at your fingertips when you choose to

embark on a houseboating trip. Camping, hiking, fishing, waterskiing, powerboating,

exploring, sunbathing and plain old relaxing are some of the things you can do. The more

13
affordable houseboats offer a more traditional, camping like outdoor experience, where

fishing, camping and closer quarters offer more opportunities for families or small groups

to experience the lake in a Huck Finn manner that offers its own quaint rewards. Another

benefit of a smaller houseboat is its ability to navigate lakes with much more agility,

leading to more secluded areas. With a more luxury houseboat model, you can expect

amenities equal to a very posh hotel such as hottubs, big-screen TVs, fireplaces, DVD

players, and deluxe accommodations in private staterooms.

Very affordable prices for the economy houseboats whereas luxury accommodations can

be had for a few thousand dollars. Houseboats accommodate from 4 to 15 or more

people, so it's very common to split the cost of a houseboat vacation up between multiple

families or groups.

Houseboating is a vacation lifestyle like no other. No where else can you have 360

degrees of lakefront property with all the amenities on board of a luxurious

condominium. And, if you get tired of the scenery out your window, all you have to do is

move to a different cove. You can rent a houseboat at over 300 locations across the U.S.

and beyond. Discover houseboating and you’ll discover a whole level of fun and

relaxation.

14
TYPES

Botels usually differ on construction at different regions of the world

There are three types of houseboats—fiberglass, pontoon and custom. Each has it

benefits. Houseboat Magazine’s Buyer’s Guide is an excellent source for understanding

each type. Basically however, a houseboat is a motorized craft on which you can live or

recreate. Most come fully equipped with everything you would find in an upscale

condominium. Full kitchens, bedrooms, fully operational bathrooms, TVs, dining areas

and hot tubs are just a few. The list could go on and on. And, for when you are away

from the slip (parking spot at the dock) houseboats come equipped with generators to

“keep the lights on.”

Houseboats range in length from 30 feet to 120 feet. Widths range from 8 feet to 22 feet

wide. The most luxurious houseboats can have three levels! Most rental houseboats are in

the 40 to 70 foot length range and can either be powered by a single outboard, dual

outboards or a single I/O or dual I/Os. Mandatory familiarization and captaining briefings

are provided to renters before they leave the marina. Houseboats are surprisingly easy to

operate. Thousands of first-time houseboaters experience the joys of houseboating every

year.

The interior of a houseboat consists of a large and open kitchen/dining room/family room

area measuring anywhere from 20 to 40 feet or more, depending on the size of the boat.

Moving back towards the rear of the boat you generally find a few bedrooms and a

couple of bathrooms. The master bedroom is usually the one located farthest back next to

15
the sliding class patio doors which access the rear deck and swim platform. There is also

a front deck as well. Generally there are two sets of stairs accessing the top deck, a spiral

set in the back and a straight set hugging the side in the front. Fiberglass houseboats

generally only have one set of stairs accessing the top deck from the rear of the craft.

Houseboats are powered by motors, out drives, and propellers. They also most likely

have a generator on board. All this and more are connected via wiring and cable to the

helm (driver’s console) at the front of the boat. Then you’ve got electronics on top of

that. Fortunately for houseboat renters, the rental operator takes all the steps necessary to

ensure your houseboat is in ship shape. And should an “issue” occur while away from the

dock, most operators don’t hesitate to zip right out to where you are with a certified

marine mechanic and a boat load of tools. If you own a houseboat you have two choices.

Learn all there is about your boat mechanically speaking, or hire it out. Houseboat

owners of both ends of the spectrum and everywhere in between are very common.

BOTELS IN INDIA

In India, houseboats are common on the backwaters of Kerala and on the Dal Lake near

Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. The houseboats in Kerala, south India, are huge, slow-

moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips. The houseboats in Srinagar, Jammu &

Kashmir are usually stationary. They are usually moored at the edges of the Dal and

Nageen lakes.

INDIA’S FIRST FLOATING HOTEL

Calcutta has become the country's first city to have a floating hotel and in turn joined

cities like Moscow, St. Petersberg, Vienna, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Phnom Phen, Hong

Kong where `Floatels' are the major tourist and business attractions.

The four-storied Floatel in Calcutta has been built according to international four-star

standards and was under construction for the past four and half years at the Kidderpore

docks.

The Floatel has a 24-hour coffee shop capable of accommodating 110 guests and

speciality restaurant and is centrally air-conditioned with 73 rooms and three suites with

attached marble and ceramic bathrooms

21
FLOATING HOTEL IN GUJARAT

Gujarat is all set to get a luxury floating hotel that would include an international marina,

a golf course and conference centres. This mega tourism project would also see two

passenger luxury ships with five-star facilities, houseboats available on hire, yachts and

amphibious buses. The MoU for the Rs 5,000 crore project was signed between Captain

Savio De Silva Furtado, chairman and managing director of the Singapore-based

Seaways Maritime and state principal secretary (tourism), R M Patel.

For the floating hotel project, the group is keen for a location around Surat, with the

international marina also at the same place. The project is set to roll in the next six

months, said Furtado. He further added that two luxury cruise ships would start plying in

the next six months along the Gujarat coast.

"Our aim is to offer a new kind of lifestyle options to the people of India. Many other

states were in the running but the Gujarat government was very quick with its support.

We need to create a berthing infrastructure for the floating hotel. This might take some

time. But the roll-on-roll-off (RO-RO) luxury passenger ships will start in next six to

eight months," Furtado said. The international marina would be a complete world-class

recreational harbour with houseboats, yachts, hotels, restaurants, and other facilities

geared for a complete outing experience. The company would set up the floating hotel at

a cost of Rs 1,700 crore, the passenger RO-RO luxury ship at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore, a

22
five star deluxe cruise liner at a cost of Rs 1,900 crore and a dozen houseboats for another

Rs 191 crore.

KASHMIR HOUSEBOATS

Floating on a postcard lake in one of Kashmir's famous houseboats is the way to see how

this place earned the name, "The Venice of the East". Water - powered peddlers sell

everything from saffron to paper mache deer to the houseboat door.

A BRIEF HISTORY

"Kashmir is a garden of eternal spring, a delightful flower bed, and heart expanding of

heritage for dervishes. Its pleasant meads and enchanting cascades are beyond all

description".

(By Mughal Emperor--Jehangir)

The houseboats of Kashmir's Dal Lake have been famous since they were first built by

the British during the latter decades of the last century. Prevented by the Maharaja from

24
buying land in Kashmir to build their houses, the British came up with the solution, as

only they could, and built their houseboats-little bits of the "old country" floating on the

serene, crystal clear waters of the Dal and Nagin Lakes in Srinagar. Used in those days by

only their owners and their friends, the houseboats and Kashmir's wonderful climate were

both an escape from the heat of the plains and welcome respite from the rigours of life in

Delhi. Over the years, the houseboats have become more and more elaborate and

luxurious in response to market demands, to reach their present heights of opulence.

This unique Kashmiri tradition of gracious waterside living originated with the first

British residents of Kashmir. In order to prevent them from assuming power, the

Maharaja of Kashmir forbade the British to own land; their solution was to build their

residences on water, with the houseboats evolving from modest floating homes to

veritable floating palaces. These hand-built houseboats, boasting all the amenities of 5-

star hotels, are one of Srinagar's stellar attractions.

25
INTRODUCTION

"Houseboat Neil Armstrong Group " are large boats, constructed of cedar wood- the scent

from which gently pervades all the rooms with a soft subtle frangrance-with elaborately

carved walls and ceilings, hung with glittering cascades of crystal chandeliers. The boats

have large verandas, sitting rooms, dining rooms, twin bedrooms, each with its own fully

fitted bathroom and an enormous sun decks, where you can sunbathe away from the gaze

of others and also escape the attentions of the Shikara traders, selling their goods and

hailing you as they glide up to the houseboats.

Here one can relax and unwind as your every need is taken care of by the houseboat boys

and the rest of the expert staff. Your Shikara is always at your command to paddle you,

unhurriedly, across the waters of the Lake, to go shopping in the city, or, just for a trip

around the sights of Dal Lake and its backwaters of floating gardens.

Many excursions can be arranged from the houseboat, to places like Sonamarg, Gulmarg,

Pahalgam, the Mughal Gardens of Shalimar and Nishat, or to the top of Shankaracharya

Hill, with its Hindu temple dedicated to the lord Shiva and with a stunning vista of the

vale of Kashmir stretching out below. A visit to the old city situated on the river Jhelum

is very enriching to see its old mosques, traditional houses and charming people.

A houseboat holiday is one during which you relax and unwind and is certainly not for

those looking for a "busy" holiday. There are many walks and rides one can take through

the hills and valleys in this area and all this can be arranged locally.

27
Besides the homely comforts and delicacies of the houseboat and the famous Shikara

31
SRINAGAR

Unlike their counterparts in Kerala, the houseboats in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir are

usually stationary. They are usually moored at the edges of the Dal and Nageen lakes.

Some of the houseboats there have been built in the early 1900's, and are still being

rented out to tourists. These houseboats are made of wood, and usually have intricately

carved wood panelling. The houseboats are of different sizes, some having up to three

bedrooms apart from a living room and kitchen.

Floating on a picture perfect lake or moored by the edge of Srinagar's lakes, Kashmir's

famous houseboats is the way to see how this place earned the name, "The Venice of the

East". The silent atmosphere, breathtaking view and homely comfort gives freshness and

renewed energy to any exhausted traveler.

A houseboat holiday is also an unusual gourmet experience. Our chefs will prepare the

finest Kashmiri dishes, including barbecued lamb kabobs marinated in fragrant herbs),

Rista (juicy, delicately seasoned lamb meatballs), Tabaq maz, fresh saffron rice and

Goshtaba, dishes typically prepared only as part of the special Wazwan celebrations. Our

chef will also prepare Western style meals to order. Every meal is a festive occasion with

the finest local dishes served in classic British style - on linen and lace, with silver and

china. Sit back and enjoy desert, firni(a special dessert pudding made of rice, raisins,

nuts, saffron and milk) and a pot of Kahwa (our local green tea).

Many tourists are attracted to Srinagar by the charm of staying on a houseboat, which

provides the unique experience of living on the water in a cedar-paneled elegant

bedroom, with all the conveniences of a luxury hotel. Srinagar's thousand or so

32
houseboats are moored along sections of the Dal and Nagin Lakes and river Jhelum, each

decorated fancifully and named romantically and even whimsically. Like hotels,

houseboats vary in degree of luxury and have been accordingly graded by the Department

of Tourism. A luxury houseboat, like a luxury hotel has fine furniture, good carpets and

modern bathroom fittings, while the ‘D category’ (the lowest category) of houseboats,

like low-budget hotels, is spartanly furnished. Like hotels too, houseboats vary widely in

their locations. Some overlook the main road, others look out onto lotus gardens and yet

others face tiny local markets and villages, all right in the middle of the lake! All

houseboats, regardless of category, have highly personalized service. Not only is there

always a "houseboy" for every boat, but the owner and his family are never far away. The

cost per day of hiring a houseboat includes all meals and free rides from the houseboat to

the nearest jetty and back, as no houseboat on the lakes is directly accessible from the

banks.

Every standard houseboat provides a balcony in the front, a lounge, dining room, pantry

and 3 or more bedrooms with attached bathrooms. All houseboats not moored to the bank

of the river or lakes provide a shikara as a free service from the houseboat to the nearest

Ghat (jetty). Virtually every houseboat in Srinagar has been provided with a municipal

water connection.

The soft murmur of the river Jhelum gives us a glimpse of the easy-paced lifestyle of

Srinagar. Its waters have moved gently for 1400 years through the center of the Kashmiri

capital. Each morning the light splashing of the river vendors selling flowers, fruits, and

vegetables announce the beginning of daily business. Dal lake, in the early sunshine,

reflects the gaily decorated houseboats; smells of Kashmiri tea and biscuits drift across

33
the lake, and all the delights of a holiday in Srinagar are fully awakened. The city's

bazaars are opened and shopkeepers show their handicrafts. The shikaras, (Kashmiri style

gondolas) Glide smoothly through the Jhelum, under nine picturesque bridges, each a

rainbow of colorful people; women in brightly embroided skirts, jeweled in silver and

gold, others in somber black or brown and heavily veiled, men in vivid caps and turbans.

The rippling waters of the lake reflect the magnificent terraced gardens around it.

Connected to a network of canals and the river Jhelum, the Dal is the main thoroughfare

for luxury boats. Further down is Nagin Lake, popular for its water-skiing, swimming,

diving and sailing. It is on these enchanting lakes that our houseboats are moored. Here

vendors glide up to your front doorstep with floating stores of fruit, flowers, shawls,

jewelry, carpets, etc.

The tourist can choose from the wide variety of houseboats according to their needs &

requirements. The grand "Firdous" has three double bedrooms with attached bathrooms,

hot and cold water, living room. "Khushal" has two double bedrooms and all other

desired comforts as above. "Nishat" and "Kushdil" are both the favorites of newly

wedded honeymooners, as they have one double bedroom and all the comforts of privacy,

facing the lake with it's beauty.

The Dal Lake is famous for the comfortable houseboats as well as the Shikaras. Each

houseboat has anything between two and four bedrooms in it with attached bathrooms

and a common sitting and dining room. The charges of a houseboat always include all

meals and a certain number of crossings by shikara to and from the houseboat.

Water - powered peddlers sell everything from saffron to paper mache deer to the

houseboat door. Ride a Shikara - a Kashmiri gondola - to the watery vegetable markets

and see the mountains mirrored in the lakes.

The wonderful houseboat provide the homely comfort, food of your taste and has many

options open to your choice such as a shikara ride, sunbathing on the houseboats top-

deck, shopping, trekking, relaxing, reading and just being served whatever desired.

This unique Kashmiri tradition of gracious waterside living originated with the first

British residents of Kashmir. In order to prevent them from assuming power, the

Maharaja of Kashmir forbade the British to own land; their solution was to build their

35
residences on water, with the houseboats evolving from modest floating homes to

veritable floating palaces. These hand-built houseboats, boasting all the amenities of 5-

star hotels, are one of Srinagar's stellar attractions.

These enchanting residences range from 60 to 150 ft. long, are 15 to 20 ft. wide and each

is unique. There are spacious four-bedroom boats and cozy two-bedrooms; all feature

attached bathrooms, electricity and modern plumbing. The cedar interiors are intricately

carved and display the consummate artistry of Kashmiri craftsmen. The furnishings

include embroidered native rugs and fabrics, local objects d'art, and solidly comfortable

Victorian and Edwardian furniture. These luxurious boats also feature rooftop sundecks

from which to take in the Himalayan views and enjoy the brisk fresh air.

36
MEALS

A houseboat holiday is also an unusual gourmet experience. Chefs will prepare the finest

Kashmiri dishes, including barbecued lamb kabobs marinated in fragrant herbs), Rista

(juicy, delicately seasoned lamb meatballs), Tabaq maz, fresh saffron rice and Goshtaba,

dishes typically prepared only as part of the special Wazwan celebrations. Our chef will

also prepare Western style meals to order. Every meal is a festive occasion with the finest

local dishes served in classic British style - on linen and lace, with silver and china. Sit

back and enjoy desert, firni(a special dessert pudding made of rice, raisins, nuts, saffron

and milk) and a pot of Kahwa (our local green tea). Rich and redolent with the flavour of

the spices used –cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, saffron, etc. -- Kashmiri food can be the

simple meal of a family, or a 36-course wedding banquet called Wazawan. The staple

diet of every Kashmiri is rice, the most preferred being the dense, slightly sticky grained

Kashmir variety, which is prized in the Valley.

Mutton, chicken or fish are of prime importance in Kashmiri meal and everyday cooking

often combines vegetable and meat in the same dish. Mutton and turnips, chicken and

spinach, fish and lotus root are also very popular combinations. Pure vegetarian dishes

include dum-aloo - roasted potatoes in curd-based gravy, and chaman- fried paneer

(cottage cheese), in a thick sauce. Non-vegetarian dishes are considered in Kashmir to be

a sign of lavish hospitality and at a Wazwan or banquet, not more than one or two

vegetarian dishes are served. Sweets do not play an important role in Kashmiri cuisine.

Instead Kahva or green tea is used to wash down a meal.

39
KERALA - KETTUVALLOMS

Backwaters in Kerala is a network of 1500 kms of canals both manmade and natural, 38

rivers and 5 big lakes extending from one end of Kerala to the other.

Before the trucks became popular, the main cargo transportation was through backwaters

by 'Kettuvalloms'. Kettuvallom means, ‘stitched boat’. They are 70 foot long, 30 tons

capacity, made with wooden planks joined and stitched together with coconut ropes and

painted with cashew nut oil outside.

Kettuvalloms or Houseboats (Riceboats) are country boats that were used in the early

days for the transport of goods from the isolated interior villages to the towns. With the

advent of roads, bridges and ferry services, gradually the Kettuvalloms went off the

scene. Now these kettuvalloms are back again as a major tourist attraction. A ride on a

Kettuvallom is a fabulous way to explore the fascinating beauty of the backwaters.

40
A house boat is about 67 feet in length and has a width of around 13 feet in the middle.

The materials that go into the making are all local and Eco friendly bamboo poles,

coconut fiber ropes, bamboo mats, coir carpets etc. The main wood used is "Anjili". The

house boats have fully furnished single and double rooms with sundeck, private balcony

with comfortable chairs, kitchen and toilet with WC. In addition there is also separate rest

room for the crew. Traditional lanterns are used as lights. The crew includes a chef and

two oarsmen. The cuisine is traditional Kerala flavour with the local specialities;

delicious fish and prawns. There are single bedroom houseboats for two people and two

bedroom houseboats for four people.

PALACE ON WATER (STATIC HOUSEBOATS)

This static luxury houseboat has two bedrooms which can accommodate four persons.

There is a balcony on top quite convenient to get a feel of the panoramic nature around. A

similar balcony is also there below. Another feature is the sundeck for sunbaths. Canoes

are always connected to the static houseboat which takes the visitors for backwater

cruises.

The houseboats in Kerala, are huge, slow-moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips.

They are a reworked model of Kettuvallams (in the Malayalam language, Kettu means

"tied with ropes", and vallam means "boat"), which, in earlier times, were used to carry

rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochi port. Kerala houseboats were considered a

convenient means of transportation.

41
The popularity of Kettuvalloms has returned in the function as major tourist attractions.

Many find the Kettuvallom an ideal means of exploring the beauty of the Kerala

backwaters.

Such a houseboat is about 60 to 70 feet (about 18 to 21 meters) long and about 15 feet

(about 5 meters) wide at the middle. The hull is made of wooden planks that are held

together by ropes of coconut fiber; the usual wood is 'Anjili'. The roof is made of bamboo

poles and palm leaves. The exterior of the boat is painted with protective coats of cashew

nut oil.

42
LAYOUT AND WORKING

Houseboats are converted ‘kettuvalloms’. They are designed for comfortable cruise and

overnight stay. The boat has one / two / three bath attached double bedrooms with

modern comforts, a very spacious living cum dining room, sundeck and a kitchen. The

boat has solar lamps and fans. The Houseboats are of premium category (Golden Star -

approved by Department of Tourism, Kerala State). We do not hesitate to mention that

our houseboats are the best in the backwaters. When you stay in our houseboat, you

would not find a better boat in the backwaters.

In the one bedroom boat the living cum dining room is bigger in size. This boat can

accommodate two persons.

The two bedroom boat also has a spacious living cum dining room. This boat can

accommodate four persons.

The boat is constructed by Eco-friendly materials like bamboo mat, Arecanut trees and

coir. A distinctive feature of the kettuvallom is the design suggesting the possible

Chinese influence. The canopy’s sides can be lifted. Traditionally, the boat only had a

single such opening on either side. But our houseboats have three, thus ensuring plenty of

shade, cool breeze, and a better view of the passing scenery.

The boat moves by an out board engine of 25 HP (which do not make much noise),

enroute visiting villages to see coir making, tea shops, paddy fields, temples, beaches etc

till sunset.

43
MEALS

In earlier days, boatmen rarely stopped along the waterways for meals. Their diet

consisted of freshly caught backwater fish, like karimeen (pearlspot) and kalangi

(barramundi, an estuarial and fresh water game fish found also in Australia),

nonperishable staples such as lentils and local large grain "red" rice, and inexpensive

spices - coriander, ginger, dried chillies, turmeric, and black mustard seeds. These they

carried in ungrounded form to retain their freshness, crushing them into a spice paste with

a stone "rolling pin" on a matching flat stone plate. Added into the paste was a liberal

measure of grated coconut, which was also the source of the boatmen’s cooking oil.

Meals were prepared on an earthen stove, fuelled by coconut shells, at the stern of the

Kettuvallom, with the spice paste roasted slowly in earthen pots. The fish was added only

in the later stages of preparation

Their vegetable and fruit diet consisted on the few things available such as yam,

breadfruit, raw mango, and jackfruit (and its seeds), which grow in great abundance along

the waterways.

Though based on the tradition of fish and vegetables, in keeping with the demands of a

cosmopolitan clientele, the cuisine served aboard our houseboats features a far more

sophisticated menu than a kettuvallom.

44
The ethnic meals are prepared on board by a personal cook and fish delicacies like white

prawns, pearl spotted fish, crabs and mussels are the specialties. The meals include lunch,

evening coffee or tea with snacks, dinner and breakfast.

STAFF

In our each houseboat total three staff which includes a cook and two crews. The cook

will also act as the captain of the house boat and the tour escort.

CHAPTER – 5

BOTELS IN OTHER
PARTS OF THE
WORLD

54
BOTELS ACROSS THE WORLD

A houseboat is a boat that has been designed or modified to be used primarily as a human

dwelling. Some houseboats are not motorized, because they are usually moored, kept

stationary at a fixed point.

The more

affordable houseboats offer a more traditional, camping like outdoor experience, where

fishing, camping and closer quarters offer more opportunities for families or small groups

to experience the lake in a Huck Finn manner that offers its own quaint rewards. Another

benefit of a smaller houseboat is its ability to navigate lakes with much more agility,

leading to more secluded areas. With a more luxury houseboat model, you can expect

amenities equal to a very posh hotel such as hottubs, big-screen TVs, fireplaces, DVD

players, and deluxe accommodations in private staterooms.

55
FLOATING HOTELS AND CRUISERS

The Diamond Princess (Cruiseliner)

The Diamond Princess, one of the largest passenger liners in the world with a gross

weight of 116,000 tons, set out on its maiden voyage from Los Angeles to Mexico and

back on March 13 after being completed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., at the

Nagasaki Shipyard and handed over to its owner, P&O Princess Cruises.

Different from Existing Passenger Ships

The Diamond Princess differs from existing passenger ships, first of all, in the fact that

when cruising it uses a diesel engine and when moving at high speed it employs a

CODAG-configuration power system, which combines the diesel engine and a gas

turbine. While providing strong output, the gas turbine, which utilizes airplane

technology, produces little noise and little vibration. Though rooms right above the

propeller would normally be quite noisy and subject to vibration, it would be possible to

put luxury suites in this location on the Diamond Princess. At the same time, the

positioning of the gas turbine behind the funnel gives the ship more inner space.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries developed the design for the ship through repeated research

in its water tank experiment laboratory. For example, in order to prevent the smell of

exhaust gas from the funnel and sewage tanks from reaching the open deck or cabin

balconies, the company carried out wind tunnel tests repeatedly for about half a year

before deciding on the shape of the funnel surroundings and the distribution of exhaust

pipes.

56
WORKING TECHNOLOGY

As environmental technology, meanwhile, the Diamond Princess uses the world's first

low-exhaust diesel engine, along with a smoke-extraction apparatus for garbage

incineration and a sewage processing apparatus developed from next-generation

biotechnology. Through the utilization of garbage for power generation, the secondary

use of processed waste water, and so on, the ship processes all of the large amount of

waste produced during a voyage on board and discards absolutely nothing into the ocean.

In addition, when anchored in port, the Diamond Princess receives power supply from

land instead of its own engines, thereby reducing exhaust to zero at such times.

The Diamond Princess measures 290 meters in length and 37.5 meters in width and rises

54 meters above water level, the height of an 18-story building. The ship has 1,339 cabins

for 2,670 passengers (calculated as two persons per cabin) and a crew of about 1,200. The

magnificent facilities on board include a dance hall, three show lounges, five swimming

pools, a miniature golf course, a tennis court, three main dining rooms, and two

subrestaurants.

Denmark’s first floating hotel, Copenhagen Living, will open its gangway for guests in

the summer of 2007. The hotel will be located in the inner harbour just ten minutes walk

from central Copenhagen and is operated by the company Waterliving. The well reputed,

neighbouring restaurant ship, VIVA, will handle the hotel catering and room service for

guests in the 12 exclusively decorated hotel rooms. The interior of the hotel will blend

57
design classics with bespoke furniture specially made for the hotel, while the panoramic

widows will offer a great view of the harbour and city. The rooms will be decorated by

some of the most talented young artists in Denmark. Just around the corner form the hotel

is one of the city’s open-air harbour swimming pools, open to the public from June to the

end of August.

AUSTRALIA

In Australia, especially on the Murray River and the sunny coastline of Queensland, there

are many motorised, pontoon-based houseboats with two or more bedrooms; some of

these houseboats have levels or storeys. Some are privately owned as either a primary

residence or a holiday shack. Many are also available for hire (rent) as self-driven holiday

destinations with accommodation for four to perhaps a dozen persons. Many males enjoy

gathering together to fish and drink alcohol in the safe passages of the Coomera River

and The Great Sandy Straits near the World's largest sand island - Fraser Island. A

renowned cruising destination for Queensland houseboaters is the Isle of Barri - a unique,

peaceful location sought by many, but only found by a dedicated few.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

In USA, houseboats are gaining in popularity. Houseboating in the United States started

in the late 1940s when people were looking for the ability to stay on the water for longer

periods of time. Lake Cumberland in Kentucky, is considered the birthplace of

houseboating in the USA. Today one can find motorized houseboats with over 2000 sq.

ft. of living space. Seattle is home to a relatively large collection of floating houseboat

neighborhoods, particularly in Lake Union and Portage Bay. Most houseboats are

designed and built for inland lakes and waterways only. Renting houseboats has also

become a popular vacation idea for Americans. In addition, houseboats have been used

for commerce; on the Northern Neck of Virginia, Chesapeake National Bank at one time

had a floating bank branch called the Boat 'n Bank that provided bank services to

watermen.

FOR RECREATION

The more

affordable houseboats offer a more traditional, camping like outdoor experience, where

fishing, camping and closer quarters offer more opportunities for families or small groups

to experience the lake in a Huck Finn manner that offers its own quaint rewards. Another

benefit of a smaller houseboat is its ability to navigate lakes with much more agility,

leading to more secluded areas. With a more luxury houseboat model, you can expect

66
amenities equal to a very posh hotel such as hottubs, big-screen TVs, fireplaces, DVD

players, and deluxe accommodations in private staterooms.

Very affordable prices for the economy houseboats whereas luxury accommodations can

be had for a few thousand dollars.

Houseboats accommodate from 4 to 15 or more people, so it's very common to split the

cost of a houseboat vacation up between multiple families or groups.

HOUSE BOATING LAKES

LAKE POWELL

Lake Powell is a massive primordial red-rock canyon filled with bright blue water and

endless sandstone scenery. Houseboating on Lake Powell is an extremely popular

vacation option for good reason: the imposing Glen Canyon Dam impounds water from

the Colorado River to form almost 2000 miles of shoreline which is more than the entire

West Coast of the United States. Lake Powell also has some of the United States' finest

fishing for bass, bluegill, green sunfish, walleye, black crappie, northern pike, and

catfish.

LAKE MEAD

Lake Mead is the largest man-made lake in North America. Its sandy shores and

welcoming blue hues are perfectly suited to houseboaters, swimmers, sunbathers, and

fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside

sightseers. Located 30 minutes from Las Vegas, Lake Mead is convenient and accessible

by air.

67
LAKE SHASTA

Lake Shasta is located in the mountains just outside of Redding, California, Lake Shasta

presents a scene of clear water surrounded by mountain slopes filled with lush California

foliage. This serpentine lake has hundreds of coves and byways to explore.

LAKE CUMBERLAND

Lake Cumberland is the vacation destination for millions of visitors every year. Because

of the warm weather and relatively long season, visitors have numerous activities to

choose from including houseboating, camping, fishing, canoeing, hiking, and others.

LAKE AMISTAD

Lake Amistad sits on the United States-Mexico border and with over 800 miles of cliffs

and sandy beaches to explore you could visit many times and never see it all. Lake

Amistad is an oasis of color in the south Texas desert.

TRINITY LAKE

Trinity Lake is 20 miles west of Lake Shasta. This lesser known yet equally striking lake

has secluded coves and beaches which make great bases for exploration and fishing

opportunities abound.

LAKE MOHAVE

Lake Mohave's expansive location caters to boaters, swimmers, sunbathers, and

fishermen. Three of America's four desert ecosystems—the Mohave, the Great Basin, and

the Sonoran Deserts—meet in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. As a result, this

seemingly barren area contains a surprising variety of plants and animals, some of which

may be found nowhere else in the world.

BOTELS IN EUROPE

71
In Europe, some of the finest and costliest examples of houseboats can be seen along the

canals of Amsterdam (in the Netherlands), which even has houseboat hotels. Houseboats

are very expensive nowadays in Amsterdam because of the limited number of moorings;

this expense has reduced the likelihood that the approximately 2,400 families that live on

the inner waters of Amsterdam will find themselves confronted by new neighbour boats.

Usually very fancy, yet not as spacious as a conventional hotel, a boatel can be the

perfect choice for those searching for something out of the usual and a perfect romantic

atmosphere.

UNITED KINGDOM

United Kingdom, canal narrowboats are used as homes and also as mobile, rented,

holiday accommodation. Narrowboats were originally used for bulk transport of raw

materials and fuel on canals constructed at the start of the Industrial revolution.

Nowadays, the canal network is mainly used for recreation and is different to typical

holiday locations, which are usually based in coastal or rural areas, because canals are

inland and often pass through many former historical, industrial, urban areas.

In coastal regions of the United Kingdom, the beached hulls of old boats and ships have

been used as homes in the past, for example, Peggotty's houseboat of the 1840s in the

novel David Copperfield. The few that remain today are more likely to be used as holiday

shacks than as homes.

CONCLUSION

78
Tourism industry has been growing at all levels through out the world. With the advent of

new globalised economy during the last decade, the world became more transparent. The

communication revolution also helped the people all over the world to know more about

the various natural and leisure activities around the world. This awareness has infact put

in an uprise in the tourism industry.

Botels and houseboats, thus emerge as a new outlook for the ever changing trends.

Tourism industry had been depending mostly on the rich as its most important customers.

The new global scenario placed the middleclass who has more spendable money and

attitude to spend. This new chunk of population shall determine the fate of industry in

coming years. This is bringing in tough competition among the players of industry. New

arenas for attractions need to be found. The high luxury amenities provided for the rich

upper class has to be provided to the emerging classes also. Thus the house boats, botels,

economic cruisers etc started emerging and still continue to grow more than the

traditional attractions. So as long the globalised economy continues to thrive the tourism

industry will also grow.
