Miguel Montano ENC 1102 Annotated Bibliography The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to collect research and documents

that can help towards providing a conclusive answer to why the implementation of ergonomic measures in the field of engineering is often sporadic. Little to no research exists providing statistic representations of how often ergonomic measures are actually carried out, but by drawing inferences from ergonomic decision-making concepts, as well as by analyzing case-studies, one can draw conclusions as to why an engineer or company might choose not to implement ergonomic measures. Thus all of the sources are of academic nature, with all of the authors having an expected level of expertise in the field of study. This also serves to limit the audience since the material is very technical and not easily accessible. The majority of these articles and books pertain to the various subfields of Human Factors Engineering, which is the application of psychology and engineering design principles to form more efficient systems. The irony behind such a field is that the application of said measures and principles is often sparse within the business and production community, often due to the costly and time consuming nature of HFE research and the relatively low ergonomic knowledge of most engineers and individuals in decision making positions.

Ann-Christine Falck, Mikael Rosenqvist, What are the obstacles and needs of proactive ergonomics measures at early product development stages? An interview study in five Swedish companies, International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, Volume 42, Issue 5, September 2012, Pages 406-415. ScienceDirect. Web, 25 Oct. 2012. Written by researchers at the Department of Product and Production Development at The Chalmers University of Technology, this article describes a study carried out by the authors that surveys 64 engineers in five different Swedish companies on the importance of applying ergonomics into their preproduction designs and decisions. The findings of this survey prove incredibly relevant to my research since it is one of the few that provides statistics as to how many and why engineers and companies choose not to implement ergonomic measures.

Bhattacharya, Amit. Occupational Ergonomics: Theory and Applications, Second Edition Hoboken: CRC Press, 2012. UCF Libraries Catalog. Web, 22 Oct. 2012. This book, a collection of various studies and case studies, was compiled by an environmental health professor at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. It covers the fundamentals of ergonomics and the practical application of those fundamentals in solving ergonomic problems. Its scope is such that it provides real world examples of the effects of ergonomic measures on worker efficiency and health in a multitude of environments and fields, thus providing a great resource for statistical and scientific referencing of ergonomic implementation.

Kroemer, K H. E, H J. Kroemer, and K E. Kroemer-Elbert. Engineering Physiology: Bases of Human Factors Engineering/ergonomics. Berlin: Springer, 2010. Web, 28 Oct. 2012. This text, a fourth edition of Professor Gunther Lehmanns 1952 work Practical Work Physiology, is a collection of biomechanical and psychological data of human workers, along with various case studies and research on the ergonomic principles that can be drawn from said data. It is an incredibly technical work, consisting mainly of physiological diagrams and information on the work capabilities of the human body. The relevance of this book to my research lies within its conclusions on the effect of ergonomic designs on human health and possible costs to employers, allowing for various perspectives of analysis and inferences to be drawn on the plausibility and pragmatism of ergonomic design measures.

Neumann, W.P., Rheta, Rosen, and Katherine Turner. Setting The Scene for Ergonomics. (Cover Story.) Industrial Engineer: IE 44.3(2012): 28-33. Business Source Premier. Web, 6 Oct. 2012. This article, created by Human Factors Engineering researchers at Ryerson University, looks at methods of teaching that demonstrate the importance of communication and interpersonal issues in Industrial Engineering. Most of the study is derived from a program at the Interpersonal Skills Teaching Center at Ryerson University that uses actors and volunteers to simulate typical work situations and issues. This article is very relevant in that it provides data on the applications of behavioral ergonomic decisionmaking in real work situations, in this case infusing ergonomic factors into

developmental processes at a fictitious company, allowing for a conclusion to be drawn as to the possible causes of failed implementation of ergonomic measures.

Philippart, Monica F. Improving Business Performance Through the Integration of Human Factors Engineering into Organizations Using a Systems Engineering Approach. Orlando, Fla: University of Central Florida, 2008. Web, 28 Oct. 2012. This is a dissertation submitted by a PhD in Philosophy at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems at the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida. It details the creation of a concept map that can be used to integrate Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomic Principles into Business. First two ontologies were created; one detailing the domain of HFE/E, and the other one detailing business processes, and concept maps were created and merged under an HFE/E taxonomy, resulting in a detailed process for integrating ergonomic principles and HFE designs into businesses. This source thus proves to be very relevant and useful to my research since it tackles the gap between ergonomic and business principles, discussing the possible benefits and flaws of ergonomic implementation from both engineers and companies perspectives, and allowing for conclusions to be drawn as to why such measures might not be considered or carried out.

Schlick, Christopher, and H.Luczak, Industrial Engineering And Ergonomics[Electronic Resource]: Visions, Concepts, Methods And Tools; Festchrift In Honor Of Professor Holger Luczak/Christopher M. Schlick, Editor. p.p.: Dordrecht; New York; Springer, c2009., 2009. UCF Libraries Catalog. Web, 1 Oct. 2012.

The author, Christopher M. Schlick, a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE), with the help of other experts in the field of other experts in the field of Human Factors and Ergonomics, created a compilation of articles arguing for the implementation of cognitive technical systems in ergonomic human-machine interfaces as a means of promoting a symbiotic relationship between the high levels of human information processing and the data holding abilities of technology. This article also discusses various other applications of ergonomic principles in Industrial Engineering decision-making such as the implementation of more efficient teamwork settings and interactive task management. This book outlines the principles of ergonomic decision-making and its uses, and is thus useful in providing definitions and explanations for various ergonomic concepts.

Valois Robert F., et al. Ergonomic Decision-Making: A Conceptual Framework for Experienced Practitioners From Backgrounds in Industrial Engineering and Physical Therapy. Applied Ergonomics37,(n.d.): 587-598. ScienceDirect. Web, 6 Oct. 2012 The authors of this article are researchers at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina the School of Public Health at the University of TexasHouston, through the analysis of 54 decision-making scenarios and in-depth interviews with 21 practitioners, developed a conceptual framework for ergonomic decision-making by experienced practitioners with backgrounds in Industrial Engineering. This study doesnt hold much in importance towards providing real world examples of the new conceptual ergonomic decision-making present in Industrial Engineering, but it does prove rather useful in conceptually analyzing and outlining the more traditional uses of

ergonomic decision-making thereby allowing for a deeper analysis of the possible factors lead to implementation.
