Rob McConnell To Host 26 Hour Live X Zone Broadcast Special
Continued from Page 1 Over the past 20 years, McConnell has exposed phony psychics, self-proclaimed prophets, fake UFO sightings and Alien Encounters, staged hauntings, and much more. McConnell explains that there are those who have claims of paranormal events and occurrences that defy explanation when investigated by qualified researchers using scientific methodology, but they are the minority and are hesitant to bring forth their stories due to the sensationalistic approach found on television and the internet. When asked about the prophesized end of the world on December 21 2012, McConnell says, For some reason, certain member of society would rather look forward to the end of their existence instead of facing reality and working through their life-challenges. We are talking about a society where people pay their hard earned money psychics to find the answers to whether they will get a new job, find the love of their life or tell them the solution to a crisis that they are having in their life. The answers can only be obtained by the person with the problem. In 20 years of doing The X Zone, I have never had a psychic give me a correct reading, seen a ghost in a haunted house, been visited by extraterrestrials or the Men in Black, received threats form the New World Order, or seen evidence of a UFO not one. Am I a believer or a skeptic? I am a broadcast journalist who is out to find the truth and report it to my listeners, viewers and readers. 2012 Mayan Apocalypse - NASA Warns

2012 Mayan apocalypse rumors have dark side, NASA warns
By Stephanie Pappas Space.com
NASA scientists took time on Wednesday, Nov. 28, to soothe 2012 doomsday fears, warning against the dark side of Mayan apocalypse rumors frightened children and suicidal teens who truly fear the world may come to an end Dec. 21. These fears are based on misinterpretations of the Mayan calendar. On the 21st, the date of the winter solstice, a calendar cycle called the 13th b'ak'tun comes to an end. Although Maya scholars agree that the ancient Maya would not have seen this day as apocalyptic, rumors have spread that a cosmic event may end life on Earth on that day. Thus NASA's involvement. The space agency maintains a 2012 information page debunking popular Mayan apocalypse rumors, such as the idea that a rogue planet will hit Earth on Dec. 21, killing everyone. (In fact, astronomers are quite good at detecting nearEarth objects, and any wandering planet scheduled to collide with Earth in three weeks would be the brightest object in the sky behind the sun and moon by now.) "There is no true issue here," David Morrison, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center, said during a NASA Google+ Hangout event. "This is just a manufactured fantasy."

Real-world consequences
Unfortunately, Morrison said, the fantasy has real-life consequences. As one of NASA's prominent speakers on 2012 doomsday myths, Morrison said, he receives many emails and letters from worried citizens, particularly young people. Some say they can't eat, or are too worried to sleep, Morrison said. Others say they're suicidal. "While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," he said. Not every 2012 apocalypse believer thinks the world will end on Dec. 21. Some, inspired by New Age philosophies, expect a day of universal peace and spiritual transformation. But it's impressionable kids who have NASA officials worried. "I think it's evil for people to propagate rumors on the Internet to frighten children," Morrison said.

navigation systems on Earth, but satellites monitoring the sun give plenty of warning and allow officials to compensate for the extra electromagnetic activity when it hits our atmosphere. What's more, Guhathakurta said, this particular solar maximum is the "wimpiest" in some time scientists have no reason to expect solar storms beyond what our planet has weathered in the past. Nor are any near-Earth objects, planetary or otherwise, threatening to slam into our planet on Dec. 21, said Don Yeomans, a planetary scientist who tracks near-Earth objects at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The only close asteroid approach on the horizon is forecast to occur on Feb. 13, 2013, when an asteroid will pass within 4.5 Earth radii to our planet (for perspective, Earth's radius is 3,963 miles, or 6,378 kilometers). The asteroid is not going to hit Earth, Yeomans said. Other rumors that the Earth's magnetic field will suddenly reverse or that the planet will travel almost 30,000 light-years and fall into the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy were also dismissed. (A lightyear is the distance light travels in one year, or about 6 trillion miles, or 10 trillion km.) One popular rumor that the planet will undergo a complete blackout from Dec. 23 to 25 earned a "What?" and blank looks from the panel of scientists. Ultimately, concerns about Earth's fate would be better focused on slow-acting problems such as climate change rather than some sort of cosmic catastrophe, said Andrew Fraknoi, an astronomer at Foothill College in California. Mitzi Adams, a heliophysicist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, agreed. "The greatest threat to Earth in 2012, at the end of this year and in the future, is just from the human race itself," Adams said. []

Do You Expect the World to End on Dec. 21, 2012?

http://smyrna.patch.com
There are reportedly many parties planned for Dec. 20 or 21 this year, just in case. With the "long count" calendar of the Ancient Mayans coming to an end that day, some people are a little pessimistic about any calendar continuing past that date. Experts on the matter, however, say we've got nothing to worry about. According to an article on nbcnews.com, "Experts estimate the system starts counting at 3114 B.C., and will have run through 13 baktuns, or 5,125 years, around Dec. 21. Experts say 13 was a significant number for the Maya, and the end of that cycle would be a milestone but not an end." Some people believe the Maya may have predicted "impending astronomical disasters that would coincide with 2012, ranging from explosive storms on the surface of the sun that could knock out power grids to a galactic alignment that could trigger a reversal in Earth's magnetic field." But according to the article, that is not the case. In fact Mayan predictions go way past our present-day, indicating that they expected a future to come even after their long count calendar came to an end. There have been several predictions of the end of the world, including the May 21, 2011 biblical prediction by then 89-year-old old "minister" Howard Camping. At that time, Patch columnist Ben Cathey made his own prediction that it would not come to pass. Indeed he was right. On May 22, 2011, the sun rose just as surely as it had the day before. []

Myths and misconceptions

NASA scientists took questions via social media in the hour-long video chat, debunking doomsday myths from the rogue planet Nibiru to the danger of killer solar flares. In fact, said NASA heliophysicist Lika Guhathakurta, it's true that the sun is currently in an active phase of its cycle, meaning electromagnetic energy has picked up. Large solar flares can impact electronics and

Doomsday Preppers Herald End of World

Doomsday Preppers herald end of the world
Canada.com
The worst thing about the end of the world on Dec. 21, 2012 if it does indeed come to pass as the Mayans prophesied is that well be denied the simple pleasures of another season of The Real Housewives of Vancouver, or Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. On the other hand, if the world does end, at least the fun guys and (a few) fun gals in Doomsday Preppers will be prepared. National Geographic Channels fly-onthe-wall docu-reality series dedicated to the idea that not all survivalists are as crazy as (outhouse) rats returns Tuesday for a second season, exclusively on the Canadian National Geographic channel. Its hard to know if the preppers, Canadian hermit Bruce Beach included, are holding out for a third season those residuals! or whether in fact they really do believe this is The End. Either way, at least its entertaining and fun to listen to them ruminate about life and the possibility of an afterlife, as they stock up on guns, ammo and non-perishable food items. Those weenies in Revolution have nothing on these folks, and that show is fiction. Doomsday Preppers is real, or as real as end-of-the-world conspiracy theorists are likely to get, anyway. Beach aside, Doomsday Preppers second season also includes a 14-year-old whos convinced the world is headed for a global economic collapse isnt that Ben Bernankes job? and a Brady Bunch-like family equally convinced that the world is about to suffer a deadly bioterrorism attack. Each weekly episode includes testimony from a supposed expert, who offers such helpful pointers as the occasionally murky line between plausibility and impossibility, and whether the preppers are in fact, nuts. Viewers get to make the ultimate decision, though, and one of the first things that jumps out is how engaging and entertaining Doomsday Preppers is when compared to, say, an average episode of Revolution. Each episode features a disclaimer that states, plainly and simply, that no matter how scary the episode looks, there is no evidence this is actually going to happen. Thats all very well and good, Doomsday producer Matt Sharp was told by reporters recently, but shouldnt the preppers in the show be told that, rather than the viewers watching at home? Its not about getting the last laugh, after all. Its never been our intention to make anyone in the show look foolish and say none of these things could ever happen. I think it would be foolish to say that none of these things could ever happen. We feature many possible scenarios on the show, everything from economic collapse to a polar shift to a bioterrorist attack. These are things weve all read about or heard about. I saw a statistic the other day that said there are three million preppers (in the U.S.), and many of us are a prepper to a certain degree. If youve ever

stored water in your basement; if youve ever set aside $1,000 in your chequing account for a rainy day, thats a form of prepping. Obviously these people have taken it to the next level. At the end of the show, though, its not our intention to pass judgment. There you have it, then. Watch, but dont judge. Doesnt mean you cant have a little vicarious fun along the way, though. Just dont let it get out of hand. (Tuesday, National Geographic Channel, 10 ET/7 PT)

forget that last crummy reality show you watched.

SOME DOOMSDAY PREPPER FACTS

The United States uses an average of 19,148,000 barrels of oil a day While the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve houses the largest stockpile of government-owned crude oil in the world -- a staggering 727 million barrels -- if the US were cut off from foreign oil, this reserve would last less than 38 days. The Earths Magnetic field has weakened 10% since the 19th century. There are more than 12,000 earthquakes recorded each year, varying in destructiveness from minor to catastrophic. The most devastating earthquake in recorded history occurred in Central China in the 16th Century. It killed over 800,000 people and some think it may have even tipped 8.0 on the Richter Scale. On December 26, 2004 Sumatra experienced an Earthquake so powerful, 9.1 on the Richter Scale, that it actually shortened the length of the day by 6.8 microseconds and changed the rotation of the Earths axis by 7 centimeters. The magnetic north pole was first located in 1831 by James Ross, the trip took 4 full years. In 1904 Roald Amundsen make his own trip to find the pole only to realize that it had moved 50KM since Rosss discovery. The Oil Depletion Analysis Center has estimated that since commercial drilling began in the mid 19th century nearly humans have used as much as a trillion barrels of crude oil.from $1.56 to $3.37. In 2001 the price for a gallon of gasoline jumped from $1.56 to $3.37. (Continued on Page 18)

Three to See
Of course, if the world does end on Dec. 21, as the Mayans prophesied, at least the world will be spared another go-round of The Victorias Secret Fashion Show. This sorry excuse for entertainment but a consistent ratingsgrabber gets a fresh airing, if thats the right word, Tuesday, with a guest appearance by the $2.5 million Victorias Secret Fantasy Bra and very special guests Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber. Nuff said. (Tuesday, Global, CBS, 10 ET/PT, 8 MT) Then again, if you need a break from conspicuous consumption and somebody elses ideal of fashion, you can always catch the season finale of the Shakespearean biker drama Sons of Anarchy. The fifth-season finale finds Gemma (Katey Sagal) making a play to protect whats hers, while Jax (Charlie Hunnam) makes a proverbial deal with the devil to secure the clubs future. All that and a Dave Navarro cover of the Rolling Stones Sympathy for the Devil. How can you go wrong? (Tuesday, Super Channel, 10 ET/MT, 9 PT) If Sons of Anarchy is a bit much for you and, really, no one could blame you if it is you could do worse than to treat you and yours to a little pre-holiday treat, with Jim Carreys live-action 2000 adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It wont make you forget the original. But with any luck it will make you

L.A. Survival Group Braces for Dec 21/12

Los Angeles survival groups brace for Dec. 21, 2012 and beyond
www.whittierdailynews.com SAN FERNANDO VALLEY - Inside a used RV that's anything but recreational and loaded with survival equipment, rain has leaked through a wooden overhead bin near a light fixture. A.B. remarks that he'll have to get that fixed, and time is running short. It's now less than one month until his group's "ready" date - December 21, 2012, when the long-predicted doomsday event based on the Mayan long-form calendar could arrive. A Los Angeles-area survival group has actively recruited people with specific skills in the past few months, tying its disaster preparedness effort to Dec. 21. The founder, A.B. (who asked to remain anonymous), doesn't necessarily believe the prediction, but he's certain that something will happen eventually. "There's so many different scenarios, there's so many things that could possibly go wrong," he said. A member of the U.S. Armed Forces, A.B. and several others in the group have military experience that has taught them survival skills. Preparing to survive a catastrophe has become its own culture, popularized by the cable show "Doomsday Preppers" and giving rise to the American Preppers Network, which offers tips and contacts to practice self-reliance during disasters. When it all hits the fan - or SHTF preppers usually have "bug-out" bags and locations ready to go, with means of survival such as food stores, water access and security measures. There are numerous doomsday scenarios: powerful earthquakes, a super volcano at Yellowstone National Park, economic and social collapse, nuclear fallout or a solar storm that destroys satellites and electrical grids. Few preppers rely on the Dec. 21 prediction, however. Experts on Mayan culture say that date, the winter solstice, simply marks the end of a cycle, no different than flipping the calendar to a new year after Dec. 31. Despite assurances by NASA and others that no threat is imminent, the date has still built up its own mythos. "I do have some members who believe, come Dec. 21, 2012, all hell is going to break loose," A.B. said. His survival community is large, with about 65 active members and about 150 when counting spouses, children and other loved ones. A.B. is still willing to take in a few others, but only to fulfill specific functions, such as doctors, engineers and ham radio operators. Other members of the community declined to be interviewed, and other groups in the Los Angeles area also declined. Preppers often like to maintain their privacy, out of concern that outsiders might

A Los Angeles-based survival group is one of many preparing for possible disaster scenarios Dec. 21, 2012. (SGVN/Staff photo by James Figueroa) figure out their bug-out locations and overrun them. A.B.'s group has several places picked out, within California, where there's enough wildlife to live off the land and water sources that could be used to catch fish. One location has a swimming pool where fish can be raised, a technique that A.B. saw on "Doomsday Preppers." Innovation is common among preppers, and others often borrow ideas. The hope is to survive long enough for government and society to stabilize, and A.B. even cautions members to protect against pregnancies until things return to normal. "We hope the government will someday replenish the electricity. Once that's accomplished, then everything else comes back online," he said. "We all believe that life will continue, just not the way we're used to." In the RV, A.B. holds up an ice cream maker. It isn't there for ice cream, but it's an effective way to complete the pasteurization process for milk, which will come from two pygmy goats. He also has five hens for eggs, several potted plants, medical supplies and a kitchen full of dry and canned food that he plans to load up before driving out of L.A. The parts for small wind turbines are stored in the RV, along with two weather stations, a telescope and small game traps. Electricity shouldn't be a problem, with five gas generators, two hydro-electric generators, 10 solar panels and several inverters. There are also two 450-gallon water tanks and A.B.'s homemade water heater, plus a U-haul truck loaded with supplies. And every week, A.B. works to acquire other goods his community might need. Other preppers have criticized him for assembling such a large group and basing it in Los Angeles, often regarded as one of the worst places to be in a disaster. But this is where he lives, where his family lives, and he believes there's safety in numbers, with multiple people capable of providing 24-hour security. A.B. has five children, three of them young adults who live apart from him, and he wants to have the resources to take care of them. "It's a stress on my side, I worry about my family, I worry about people I care about," he said. "But trying to do it all, it's an impossibility." His father doesn't believe in the need for extreme disaster preparedness, and A.B. recognizes that a disaster could force him to make some difficult decisions. "Just leaving my mom behind is something I do not want to think about," he said. The community itself is carefully balanced. Some applicants are rejected, with members providing input about who gets to join. One person, a professional clown, was met with skepticism by the group because no other skills were offered. It was a tough decision, A.B. said, that never had to be made because the person didn't respond to a questionnaire. An astrophysicist also came with some question marks because of clashing personalities, and A.B. wound up agreeing to share some provisions as separate groups. "I think where we're at is a stable operation right now," he said. "I wouldn't want to get anything beyond 150." Matthew Stien - When Disaster Stikes

Disasters often strike without warning and leave a trail of destruction in their wake. Yet armed with the right tools and information, survivors can fend for themselves and get through even the toughest circumstances. Matthew Stein's When Disaster Strikes provides a thorough, practical guide for how to prepare for and react in many of life's most unpredictable scenarios. In this disaster-preparedness manual, he outlines the materials you'll need-from food and water, to shelter and energy, to first-aid and survival skills-to help you safely live through the worst. When Disaster Strikes covers how to find and store food, water, and clothing, as well as the basics of installing back-up power and lights. You'll learn how to gather and sterilize water, build a fire, treat injuries in an emergency, and use alternative medical sources when conventional ones are unavailable. Stein instructs you on the smartest responses to natural disasters-such as fires, earthquakes, hurricanes and floods-how to keep warm during winter storms, even how to protect yourself from attack or other dangerous situations. With this comprehensive guide in hand, you can be sure to respond quickly, correctly, and confidently when a crisis threatens.
Author, engineer, designer, and green builder, Mat Stein was born and raised in Burlington Vermont. His parents started him walking on skis at age three, hiking at age 5, backpacking at age seven, hunting at age 10, rock climbing and extreme skiing at age 11. The Green mountains of Vermont, White mountains of New Hampshire, and the Adirondacks of upstate New York were his four-season childhood play grounds. After graduating from MIT in 1978, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering, the lure of the real mountains of the west drew Mat across the country to California. A thirty year interest in alternative healing got its start while Mat was still a freshman at MIT, when he witnessed the miraculous remote healing of a crippled friend (big shake up to his scientific Billiard Ball Theory of the Universe way of thinking). Over the years, this interest expanded to the use of herbs, homeopathy, and other alternatives to heal medical conditions that werent responding to western style medicine. The engineer, carpenter, and backwoodsman sides of Mat found peace, harmony, and synergy through renewable energy, green building, and self-reliance. Today, Mat owns and operates Stein Design and Construction, providing product design services, engineering analysis, and green building. It was a true epiphany that started Mat firmly on the path of self-reliance, emergency prep, and sustainability. Around Thanksgiving of 1997, during his morning session of prayer and meditation, in answer to a simple request for guidance and inspiration, Mat received a fully developed story board type of pictorial outline that popped into his head instantaneously. It was the outline for a massive handbook to help people be more self-reliant, live more sustainably, and prepare to weather the coming storms as we pass through this age of uncertainty and change. After three years of work, this cosmic download crystallized into his first book, When Technology Fails. Stein has appeared on numerous radio and television programs and is a repeat guest on Fox News, MSNBC, Lionel, The X Zone Radio Show, Coast-to-Coast AM, and the Thom Hartmann Show. DATE: 2240 CLAIMANT: Talmud, Orthodox Judaism EVENT: According to an opinion in the Talmud and mainstream Orthodox Judaism, the Messiah should come within 6000 years from the creation of Adam, and the world could possibly be destroyed 1000 years later. This would put the beginning of the period of desolation in the year 2240 AD and the end of the period of desolation in the year 3240 AD. This is not strictly an "end of the world" scenario as it is cyclical in nature. The nature of the period of desolation is controversial and no one theory is binding. DATE: 2280 CLAIMANT: Rashad Khalifa EVENT: According to Rashad Khalifa's research on the Quran Code, the world will end in this year. Will The World Really End On 2012.21.12?

Will the world end on December 21, 2012? The unsettling evidence behind ancient astrologers' claim and the film they inspired.
Mail Online (Originally Published October 2009)
A tidal wave engulfs the Himalayas. A tsunami scoops up a warship and dumps it on the White House. The Great Wall of China crumbles and thousands of screaming tourists plummet to their deaths. Soon the horrors reach British shores. A massive earthquake sends Big Ben crashing to the ground and destroys the newly-built Olympic stadium, great surges in our rivers drown millions up and down the country, and plunging asteroids turn our towns and cities into smoking ruins. Those who survive the initial onslaught flee in terror, but to run is futile for this is the ultimate catastrophe the end of the world, as predicted by the Hollywood disaster movie 2012, which opens next month. Starring John Cusack and Thandie Newton, 2012 is directed by Roland Emmerich, whose previous films, Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, have conjured up similarly apocalyptic visions with Earth invaded by hostile aliens, or threatened with the sudden onset of a new Ice Age. While these have been dismissed as entertaining bunkum, Emmerichs latest effort is causing rather more of a stir. Its plot revolves around a real-life prediction that the world will end on December 21, 2012, and many doomsayers claim there is evidence to suggest that this prophecy will come true. In America, they include Richard Heene, the Colorado father who created a worldwide frenzy when he claimed, falsely, that his six-year-old son Falcon had floated off in a home-made helium balloon shaped like a UFO. It has since emerged that Heene planned to build an underground bunker to protect his family in the event of the sun exploding in 2012. Whether his strange craft was part of his escape plan has yet to be established, but Heene is far from alone in his fear of this imminent Armageddon. Far-fetched though it sounds, rumours about what might happen in 2012 are fuelling so much hysteria that NASA has had to intervene to allay public fears. Two years ago, I got a question each week about 2012, says David Morrison, director of NASAs Lunar Science Institute in California. Now Im getting a dozen a day and people are really worried. A couple of teenagers over here have told me they were contemplating suicide rather than facing the end of the world and Ive also had quite a few questions from England. One of the saddest inquiries was from a

woman who said her only friend was her cat. She wanted to know if she should have him put down before 2012 so that he wouldnt suffer. Morrison has posted a list of 20 questions and answers on NASAs website to address peoples worries. But fascination with our apparently looming annihilation continues to grow with more than 175 books about it advertised on the Amazon website alone, and some ghoulish entrepreneurs even offering 2012 survival kits. So, what has led to such alarm about 21/12/2012, a date causing panic not seen since fears about the Millennium computer bug in the year 2000? Is it all nonsense or could we really be only three years away from Doomsday? This belief in our imminent demise is based on a calendar produced by the ancient Mayan civilisation, which flourished in the steamy rainforests of central America for nearly 2,000 years until its mysterious collapse around AD900. Today its abandoned temples and palaces have been engulfed by the lush green vegetation of the jungle, their rooms inhabited only by wild animals and birds yet this was once one of the sophisticated societies of its day. Without wheels or metal tools to help them, the Mayans built many splendid stone buildings, including intricately designed observatories in which they developed a highly advanced understanding of astronomy. Scanning the heavens for many centuries and noting any association between the movement of the celestial bodies and events on Earth, they produced complicated almanacs full of horrifying imagery. The rising of the planet Venus in the morning, a sign believed to augur Mayan success in war, was represented by pictures of decapitated heads, while the lunar eclipses were symbolised by drawings of a dead goddess with a rope around her neck. Eclipses were thought to be a time of great danger for women, and a period when many children would be born deaf or blind. For all their gruesome illustrations, these almanacs were remarkably accurate in their astronomical calculations. With neither telescopes nor other equipment at their disposal, the Mayans managed to calculate that a lunar month the period between successive new moons lasted 29.5305 days, just 34 seconds away from what

we now know to be its actual length. They also accurately forecast the movements of planets including Jupiter and Mars, and the occurrence of both solar and lunar eclipses for many centuries to come. Given these very precise predictions, Doomsday theorists are alarmed that the Mayan Long Count Calendar, as it is known, appears to end abruptly on a date they recorded as 13.0.0.0. On the Gregorian calendar which we use today, this corresponds to December 21, 2012. The only clue as to what the Mayans thought might happen on that day comes from an ancient stone tablet, discovered during roadworks in Mexico back in the Sixties. Carved upon it are hieroglyphics that refer to the year 2012 and an event that will involve Bolon Yokte, the Mayan god of war and creation. Weathering and a crack in the stone have made the last part of the inscription illegible, but Mexican archaeologists have interpreted it as saying: He will descend from the sky. Might this be a warning of impending divine wrath? Those who believe so include journalist Michael Drosnin, author of the best-selling book The Bible Code, which describes the work of three Israeli mathematicians who analysed the Book of Genesis using a computer. They supposedly discovered coded references to the names of 66 legendary rabbis who lived and died many centuries after Genesis was written. The text was also said to contain hidden details of the rabbis birth and death dates, and of the towns and cities in which they would live. Continuing this analysis, Drosnin claimed to have found encoded descriptions of the Earth being pounded by comets in the year 2012. Others have suggested that, on the day in question, the winter solstice, the sun will be in exact alignment with the centre of our galaxy. According to Lawrence Joseph, author of a book called Apocalypse 2012, unspecified gravitational and energy forces may be acting on us from the centre of the milky way and, if disrupted, he speculates they would throw our bodies and our planet out of kilter, resulting in catastrophe.

According to Lawrence Joseph, author of a book called Apocalypse 2012, unspecified gravitational and energy forces may be acting on us from the centre of the milky way and, if disrupted, he speculates they would throw our bodies and our planet out of kilter, resulting in catastrophe. He compares this to the way in which even a momentary disruption of electrical power can cause the clocks on DVD players and microwaves to blink meaninglessly. But this theory is debunked by David Morrison of NASA. The galactic centre is very far away, approximately 30,000 light years, so it has negligible effects on the solar system or the Earth, he says. In fact, the sun goes in the general direction of the galaxys centre every December and nothing at all happens. Morrison also refutes a popular internet theory that worldwide devastation will be caused by Earths magnetic polarity suddenly changing and throwing its direction of rotation into The Earth has been rotating in the same direction for the past four billion years, he says. The magnetic polarity does change every few hundred thousand years and the last time was about 400,000 years ago, but there is no evidence to suggest that it will happen again any time soon. Even if it does, it has no bearing on the direction in which the Earth spins, and there is no reason to think it will do any other harm. One idea with at least some credibility is that the Earth will one day be hit by a large extra-terrestrial object. But David Morrison dismisses the idea put forward in the film that this will be a mysterious planet known as Nibiru long the subject of speculation among the gloom-mongers of cyberspace. Niburu was supposedly first identified by the Sumerian people, who lived 5,000 years ago in what is now southern Iraq and it is said to be heading towards Earth at an alarming rate. Astronomers insist that there is no such planet but, much to Morrisons frustration, this only increases suspicion that governments worldwide are concealing its existence to avoid global panic. The simple laws of planetary motion tell you that if this thing really was only three years away from hitting Earth, it would be the brightest thing in the sky apart from the sun and the moon, he says. It would have been tracked by thousands of amateur and professional astronomers all over the world. You just cant hide a planet. Fictitious though planet Nibiru is, the Earth has always been subject to strikes by

comets and asteroids. But to do any real damage, an object would have to be more than a mile wide. Such big hits are rare and the last was 65 million years ago, leading to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Searches of the cosmos for potential collisions up to 100 years into the future by NASAs Near Earth Object Program led to them reporting that there are no serious threats in the offing and, even if a sizeable projectile did hit us, it might not wipe us out altogether. There would be global firestorms and severe acid rain, says Don Yeomans, manager of the programme. But all of these effects are relatively short-term, so the most adaptable species, like cockroaches and humans, would be likely to survive. According to Bill McGuire, Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at University College London, we are 12 times more likely to experience the explosion of a super-volcano defined as an eruption that expels 1,000 cubic kilometres or more of debris, enough to obliterate an area the size of Yorkshire. The site that currently gives most cause for concern is Yellowstone Volcano in the American state of Wyoming, which continues to rumble ominously and could explode with the force of 1,000 Hiroshima bombs and plunge the planet into a nuclear winter. There would be great clouds of sulphur gas that would mix with the water in the atmosphere to form a veil over the Earth, cutting out sunlight and dramatically cooling the Earths surface, says Professor McGuire. Plants would be unable to photosynthesise and there would be widespread crop failures, famine and starvation. A super-volcano probably wouldnt kill all of us, but there would be a devastating impact on our global economy and society. One thing the scientists agree upon is that life on Earth will one day come to an end. The constantly diminishing supplies of hydrogen in the sun, as in all ageing stars, will cause it to swell up and become what astronomers call a red giant. It will then engulf us before collapsing in on itself and becoming a white dwarf. The good news is that this is unlikely to happen for another four billion years or so. And since none of the other aforementioned fates is likely to befall us for a very long time to come, if at all, we are probably safe to get on with our Christmas plans for 2012. We cannot be too complacent about mankinds longevity, however. Quite apart from the much trumpeted

dangers of global warming, some experts suggest that the Earths magnetic field which is crucial for deflecting solar radiation and channelling it into belts that harmlessly circle the planet will diminish to the point where it can no longer protect us from the suns rays. This could lead to an epidemic of cancers and a major disruption of the food chain. Compasses would stop working, animals would be unable to find their way back to breeding grounds, and the weather would become less predictable. The Earth would become unstable, unleashing a series of natural disasters. Such a lingering end to humanitys time on Earth might not be the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters, but it lends a chilling resonance to the final lines of TS Eliots famous poem The Hollow Men, penned in the aftermath of World War One. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper. []

A Few Comments People Are Making About December 21 2012

The major contributors of environmental destruction where raised with the Christian faith. That very religion that was forced into the Americas with fire and blood. And with blood I mean the blood of the native people of this land who treated this earth as a sacred temple gifted by the great spirit. The forests and animal life and nature where and are to be treated with respect because we are all connected because by natural law we need each other. Like a pathogenic infection but with politics and organized religion have humans spread. ToltecEagle501 My hope is that all this Hollywood nonsense eventually inspires people to seek out more of the truth about the Mayan Calendar. Does it end? Yes and No. The cycles and long count continues on and yes, they did make reference to years far in the future. The portion of the calendar that tracks evolutionary consciousness does end. But as usual, Hollywood got it wrong. It's end date is October 28, 2011. But have no fear, it doesn't mean the end of the world. Only the end of the '9 underworlds' of evolution after which many are expected to emerge with a new enlightenment. But just as school gives us the lessons to learn and it's our free will whether we choose to learn or not, the same holds true for a higher level of consciousness. Tiruinks

Doomsday 2012 Fact Sheet

Doomsday 2012 Fact Sheet
David Morrison Director, Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Universe NASA Senior Scientist
There is widespread and unnecessary fear of doomsday on December 21, 2012. Some people worry about a Maya prophesy of the end of the world, others fear a variety of astronomical threats such as collision with a rogue planet. Opinion polls suggest that one in ten Americans worry about whether they will survive past Dec 21 of this year, and middle-school teachers everywhere report that many of their students are fearful of a coming apocalypse. Following are brief facts that address these doomsday fears. Mayan Calendar: The Maya calendar, which is made up different cycles of day counts, does not end this year. Rather, one cycle of 144,000 days (394 years) ends and the next cycle begins. Mayan Prophecy: The ancient Maya did not predict the end of the world or any disaster in December 2012. Such doomsday predictions are a modern hoax. Planet Nibiru: Nibiru is probably the minor name of a god found in ancient Mesopotamian writing. There is no planet named Nibiru, and the fictional books by economist Zecharia Sitchin about a civilization on this planet are a hoax. Rogue Planet Headed for Earth: For the past decade there have been reports of a rogue object (Planet X, or Nibiru, or Hercubolus, or even Comet Elenin) that will collide with Earth in December 2012. These claims are not true. If such a threatening world existed, it would be one of the brightest objects in the sky, and astronomers would have been tracking it for years. If it existed, its gravity would be distorting the orbits of planets, especially Mars and Earth. Astronomers know that it does not exist. Planet Alignments: There is no alignment of planets in Dec 2012. There is an approximate lining up of the Earth and Sun and the center of our Galaxy in late December, but this happens every year. In any case, planet alignments have no effect on the Earth. Pole Shift: There is nothing strange this year about either the magnetic poles or the rotational poles of the Earth. The magnetic polarity changes every million years or so, but that is not happening now, and it probably takes thousands of years when it does happen. A sudden change in the rotational axis has never happened and is not possible. If there were any change in the Earths rotation, it would be instantly apparent by failure of our GPS systems. Increasing Disasters. Our planet is behaving normally in 2012, although we see more and more news stories about natural disasters. There has been no increase in earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. There has been an increase in extreme weather, including both droughts and floods, which are partly

attributable to global warming, but this has nothing to do with a 2012 doomsday. Solar Outbursts: The Suns ongoing 11-year activity cycle is expected to peak in 2013, not 2012. Solar outbursts (flares and CMEs) can damage orbiting satellites but will not hurt us on the surface. The strength of the 2013 solar maximum is predicted to be lower than average, not higher. Bunker Conspiracy: Accusations of a massive government cover-up are nonsense. No government could hide an incoming planet or silence hundreds of thousands of scientists. Rumors that huge bunkers have been built in the U.S. or elsewhere to shelter the elite are lies. Apparently a few people are building private shelters, but their fear of 2012 is misplaced and they are wasting their money. Scaring Children: The group most vulnerable to doomsday claims is children. Teachers report that many of their students are frightened and some are even considering suicide. This is the most tragic consequence of the 2012 hoax. The End of the World: The idea of the sudden end of the world by any cause is absurd. The Earth has been here for more than 4 billion years, and it will be several more billion years before the gradual brightening of the Sun makes our planet unlivable. Meanwhile there is no known astronomical or geological threat that could destroy the Earth. Cosmophobia: Many young people write to me that they are scared of astronomy. When they read about some new discovery, the first thing they think is that it might hurt them, even if it is happening in a distant galaxy. There is no reason for such fears, which I call cosmophobia (fear of the universe). This rash of concern seems to be the result of too many conspiracy theories and sensational stories featured on the Internet and irresponsible news outlets. Astronomical objects are so distant that they cannot threaten the Earth. Please don't be afraid of the Sun or the planets or comets or asteroids. The universe is not your enemy. []

Mayan Elder Tata Pedro Talks About December 21 2012

December 21 2012 has remained a mystery for many people, but not for Mayan Elder, Tata Pedro. His Mayan name is k'u'x'ya, which means heart of the lake. Tata Pedro is the head of the Council of Mayan Elders and believes that in order to come together as a global civilization, we must first come together as individual communities. In regard to December 21, 2012, Tata Pedro stated, People are saying the world is going to end. People are getting sick just thinking about it because they do not want to see the world end. What is going to happen is a change of time, a cycle of time. That is why people around the world are afraid. We will end a baktun in 2012. It is a big change of the time. We have begun a search in 1999, 13 years searching and could be 2012 or 2013. It is important to have people around that know peace and have more light, more illumination. There are people inside the circle and this mission is to spread the word in those moments. If we dont stop now to protect the planet and stop the pollution, there will be some destruction. The world will look the same but we will have more people with consciousness - for those that can see it. The changes of this planet are gradual, not just from one day to another. If we continue doing the ceremonies and opening the portals and the gates, more people will know about what is happening and maybe they will change just because they want to change, not because they are afraid of the destruction of the planet. They will change because they will see more people that are more loving, not just people that dance with death. The energy will be more positive and those that want to come into this envelope of peace and love, are welcome. Those that don't want to come in, they will be out. Now we are receiving the messages for 2012 that we have to change, that we have to open our hearts, that we have to be more conscious. The changes are now, in this moment. It will not be the end of the world. The energy now is very strong. There is much strange weather. The rays of the sun are changing the weather. This is the energy that we are feeling now, these changes in our planet, radical changes in the weather. We must find a equilibrium with the sun and the planet and stop polluting because the rays can give us life or death.

By Damian Ghigliotty
While some are throwing fantastical Doomsday countdown parties, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is issuing grave warnings that 2012 Mayan apocalypse rumors pose a real-life threat to frightened children and depressive teenagers. David Morrison, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center, said on Wednesday that he receives a large number of emails and letters from worried citizens, most often from young people. Some say they can't eat, or are too worried to sleep, while others say they are suicidal, Morrison said. He made that announcement during an online video 'hangout' event hosted by NASA on Google+, calling the propagation of rumors on the Internet to frighten children evil. While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned, Morrison said. NASA, a United States government agency, recently set up an information page on its website explaining why the world is not going to end on December 21, 2012. The apocalypse rumors and fears are based on misinterpretations of the Mayan calendar, as SPACE.com reported. The rumors began with claims that Nibiru, a rogue planet discovered by the Sumerians, will crash into Earth on December 21, killing everyone, according to NASAs website. The origins of those rumors have been linked to the works of the late Azerbaijani-born author Zecharia Sitchin, who wrote in 1976 that he had found and translated Sumerian documents identifying the rogue planet. Sitchin died in 2010 at the age of 90. There is no such planet, scientists say. now to the naked eye, NASA states on its apocalypse fear debunking page. However, the MRE is easily the healthier meal. Since about 1997, MRE cases have also included something called a TTI (time and temperature indicator) on the outside of the box to assist inspectors in determining if MREs are still good. The Federal Gun Control Act of 1968 required ammunition manufacturers and dealers to be licensed and keep records of sales. The act also prohibited mail-order transactions. Yellowstone Park - is one of the largest super volcanoes in the world. The last eruption was 640,000 years ago. The term "super volcano" implies an eruption of magnitude 8 on the Volcano Explosively Index, meaning that more than 1,000 cubic kilometers (250 cubic miles) of magma (partially molten rock) are erupted. The super volcanic crater at Yellowstone is over 80 kilometers long by 45 kilometers wide - large enough to hold the world's biggest city, Tokyo (population 18 million). The disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in March released far more radiation than the Japanese government has claimed Researcher, Boris Borisov, in his article titled The American Famine estimated the victims of the financial crisis in the US are at over seven million people. The financial crisis in the United States has been compared to 1932-1933 with Holodomor, or Famine, in the USSR during 1932-1933. According to Femas evacuation planning steps in order to get out of harms way you may need to go north, south, east or west. Pick a destination in each direction. David Eddies invented the term Y2K in June 1995. It was so feared that Clinton even signed the Y2K Act in 1999 to limit the governments liability. (Contd on Page 24)

SOME DOOMSDAY PREPPER FACTS

Continued from Page 4. The first seismoscope, an instrument used to measure movements of the earths crust, was invented in 132 AD by Chang Hng. The device, which resembled a large wine vessel, had 8 dragons each facing one of the primary directions of the compass, each with a ball in its mouth. Below each dragon was a matching toad with an open mouth. When the device sensed an earthquake the dragon pointing the direction the quake originated would drop its ball. The theory of true polar wander postulates that over time the redistribution of weight on the surface of the earth, (i.e. the continents moving, volcanoes erupting, ice fields melting and reforming elsewhere) eventually cause the Earths rotational axis to change. While some are afraid this will affect modern life the process happens gradually and would take millions of years to complete. FEMA recommends that in the event of an emergency one of the most important steps is keeping a full tank of gas in your car, or having an alternative means of getting out of town. They also recommend having a basic supply of emergency rations as in the event of a major disaster basic necessities will be unavailable. Saudi Arabia produces the most oil of any country in the world at an astonishing 9 million barrels a day. There are over 500,000 detectable earthquakes each year, of that 100,000 can be felt, and only 100 cause actual damage. According to a study at UC Davis we will run out of oil 100 years before a viable alternative energy source is developed, if

Why Do People Believe in 2012 Doomsday?

The world will end in 2012 thats what a growing number of people believe.

Here Nick Pope, an expert on mysteries and conspiracy theories, takes on the doom-mongers.
The Sun
ON December 21, 2012, the Mayan calendar comes to an end and so, fear some, do we. To be more precise, the date marks the end of a 5,125-year cycle of this ancient calendar. Little is known of the Mayans a Central American civilisation skilled in mathematics and astronomy but many believe this ancient culture had secret knowledge that enabled them to predict when the world would end. Google the phrase 2012 end of the world and you will find millions of references to this belief. There are many different and odd theories about what exactly might happen. Some believe a mysterious celestial object known as Planet X, or Nibiru, is returning to our solar system and will bring cosmic catastrophe. Others think a rapid polar shift a sudden reversal of the Earths rotation will bring global destruction. Some theories talk of planetary or galactic alignments, others say there will be a reversal of the Earths magnetic polarity. There are other weird theories doing the rounds about what might happen in 2012 too. As reported in The Sun last summer, former oilfield executive Ian R Crane has predicted that a false flag alien invasion will be staged at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games a faked event that will enable the authorities to declare martial law and usher in a new world order. The New Age community takes a different view of the 2012 predictions. They dont think the world will end in a literal sense, but that there will be a spiritual transformation. The language is woolly and the science decidedly dodgy, but there is talk of a shift in consciousness and the dawning of the Age Of Aquarius. It sounds more fun than the fire and brimstone predicted from some quarters. Unsurprisingly, many academics and sceptics think the whole thing is rubbish. They believe a combination of conspiracy theorists, charlatans and New Age mystics have misrepresented the Mayan writings or misunderstood how this ancient culture thought. They point out that just because any calendar ends, it doesnt follow that the next day is doomsday. The idea 2012 will see the end of the world goes far wider than internet forums, its firmly embedded in popular culture. The 2009 Hollywood blockbuster movie 2012 told the story of people trying to survive global catastrophe. It included references to the Mayan prophesies and among the taglines for the film were We were warned and Find out the truth search 2012. The most amazing example of how widespread beliefs about 2012 have become involves NASA. The space agency got so many questions about it they put extensive material on the Frequently Asked Questions section of their website. Entitled Beginning of the end or why the world wont end?, the section begins by assuring readers nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. NASA debunk the claims about Nibiru and Planet X and quash theories about planetary and galactic alignment. They say no planetary alignments will occur for the next few decades and point out Earth wont cross the galactic plane and even if these events did take place their effects would be negligible. NASA explain that while the Earth and sun align with the approximate centre of our galaxy the Milky Way every December, this is an annual event of no consequence. The polar shift theory is dismissed as being impossible but, intriguingly, the point about the reversal of magnetic polarity is actually TRUE. NASA acknowledge this happens around every 400,000 years but state: As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesnt cause any harm to life on Earth. Such denials are unlikely to convince conspiracy theorists. Many of them believe NASA faked the moon landings and routinely hide evidence of UFOs and alien visitation. There is nothing new about predictions that the world will end. The idea is central to most world religions, with words such as Armageddon, Judgment Day and The End of Days used. Many Christians believed the world would end in 1000AD a millennium after the birth of Christ. More recently there was a surge of interest in French mystic Nostradamus, who predicted the world would end in 1999. Some people linked this with the Y2K problem the Millennium Bug which some experts thought would crash computers around the world when 1999 rolled over into 2000. Earlier this year American Christian radio broadcaster Harold Camping predicted The Rapture when the righteous would be taken to heaven, with everyone else left behind to face death and destruction. When the predicted day May 21 passed without incident, Camping simply picked another day, October 21. As readers will have noticed, the world didnt end then either. The good news is that all previous predictions of the end of the world have proved to be false. So whatever you believe, the odds are in our favour. But that wont stop some preparing for Armageddon. Whether its out of fear or fun, on Facebook and elsewhere, people are beginning to plan end of the world parties for December 21, 2012. I may organise one myself. If the world doesnt end, we can raise our glasses and drink some champagne. And if it does, at least I wont have to do the washing up. []

Terence McKennas Magical 2012

An Insufficiently Advanced Technology For McKennas Magical 2012
By R.U. Sirius
By now, everybody knows that theres a big crowd of folks who think something really big is going to happen this year because the Mayan Calendar allegedly ended in 2012 specifically December 21, 2012 Less well known amongst the masses that are vaguely familiar with the meme is the fact that psychedelic/cyberdelic philosopher Terence McKenna was the original primary source for this notion and for this particular date. (If my memory serves, Jose Arguelles the recently deceased new age guru perhaps best known for 1987s Harmonic Convergence originally set a different date for this Mayaninfluenced ending of all endings, but if you try to google for data at least to the limits of my patience youll find that any notice of this is buried beneath the now unified meme that December 21 is the hot date with destiny.) Both men envisioned not an apocalypse (as per the current dominant meme) but some sort of transmutation of the human condition (a positive apocalypse). While Arguelless perceptions were largely influenced by mystical esoterica, McKennas vision was much more a hybrid of the mystical and the technological. Like Ray Kurzweil, McKenna foresaw a world in which technical evolution (he liked to use the word novelty) would keep doubling at an exponential rate until we would hit a singularity. Only McKenna originally envisioned this constant and ever-quicker exponential doubling not by charting technical evolution but by channeling the logos behind huge quantities of tryptamine hallucinogens in the Amazon. In McKennas singularity, we would unite with the logos, after which all of human history and materiality itself would be seen platonically as an idea space and everything including all proceeding time and human experience would become, in some sense, our plaything. And this would happen on December 21, 2012. While McKenna divined much of his theory from such mystical sources as the i Ching and ideas taken from psychedelic shamanism as practiced in the Amazon, he was also an astute student of developments in hard science, technology and culture and his sense of this drive towards the singularity was at least somewhat grounded in how he saw real material and cultural developments. Thus, when McKenna described his upcoming singularity as a place where the boundary between the exterior and interior collapses and what you imagine simply comes to be, it was not just mystical intuition. He would also be following movements towards technologies that allow us to control other technologies with our minds, he would be getting excited about K. Eric Drexlers

prediction of molecular control of the structure of matter; and he would be thrilling to predictions of desktop manufacturing (If you put those three things together, you get something like a world where what you imagine simply comes to be.). He also jumped on the Virtual Reality train in the early 90s, as that would be a kind of ecology of mind where this vision would be even easier to realize. McKennas technophilia to the extend he was a technophile was not without its ambiguities. He believed technological advance without the intervention of spiritual, psychedelic consciousness and values would be both ugly and lethal. Still, it would probably be a mistake one that seems to be made by many current McKenna-philes to think that Terence would feel confident that this grand transmutation based, only in part, on the Mayan Calendar was going to occur on time despite the fact that the technological training wheels needed to boost us into this platonic state have not yet sufficiently developed (if ever). McKenna never took his role as a prophet as seriously as some of his disciples now appear to. As a self-admitted carnival barker (and how self righteous and humorless have we become that many reading this will find this reason to dismiss him entirely?), theres a pretty good chance that he would have hopped aboard the 2012 circus for purposes of livelihood and as a context for spreading other aspects of his philosophy, and he probably would have been available to be propped up on a hemp-woven throne at the stroke of midnight at the 12.21.12 global rave, but I feel certain that he would have been much more surprised if December 21, 2012 turns out to be a day of magical transmutation than he would have been disappointed if it does not.[]

TERENCE MCKENNAS IDEAS Terence McKenna advocated the exploration of altered states of mind via the ingestion of naturally occurring psychedelic substances. For example, and in particular, as facilitated by the ingestion of high doses of psychedelic mushrooms, and DMT, which he believed was the apotheosis of the psychedelic experience. He spoke of the "jeweled, self-dribbling basketballs" or "self-transforming machine elves" that one encounters in that state. Although he avoided giving his allegiance to any one interpretation (part of his rejection of monotheism), he was open to the idea of psychedelics as being "transdimensional travel"; literally, enabling an individual to encounter what could be ancestors, or spirits of earth. He remained opposed to most forms of organized religion or guru-based forms of spiritual awakening. Either philosophically or religiously, he expressed admiration for Marshall McLuhan, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Gnostic Christianity, Alfred North Whitehead and Alchemy. McKenna always regarded the Greek philosopher Heraclitus as his favorite philosopher. He also expressed admiration for the works of James Joyce (calling Finnegans Wake "the quintessential work of art, or at least work of literature of the 20th century") and Vladimir Nabokov: McKenna once said that he would have become a Nabokov lecturer if he had never encountered psychedelics.
During the final years of his life and career, McKenna became very engaged in the theoretical realm of technology. He has advocated the idea of a technological singularity. In his last recorded public talk, Psychadelics in The Age of Intelligent Machines, he outlined strong ties between psychedelics, computation technology, and humans.

7 Reasons The World Will Not End in 2012

7 Reasons The World Will NOT End On Dec. 21, 2012
Business Insider
It's Nov. 21, 2012. Which means you officially have one month until the end of the world, according to ancient Mayan calendar predictions. If you're the country of Mexico, a 52week campaign has already been launched to profit from the impending apocalypse. Keep in mind that doomsday theorists and religious sects have been predicting The End for thousands of years. Fortunately, all of these dates have come to pass. To maintain your faith that this will also be the case one year from now, we've compiled seven other dates when the world was supposed to end, but didn't. REASON 1: 1000 A.D. Christian authorities believed the new millennium would be the Second Coming of Jesus. In anticipation of his return, many people disposed of their belongings, left their jobs, and abandoned their homes. When the date came and went with no apocalypse, folks who thought the end was near realized they had miscalculated Jesus' age and decided the world would actually end in 1033 A.D. This, as we know, also turned out be a vast miscalculation. REASON 2: 1792 In 1780, a heavy gloom fell over New England prompting a religious group known as the Shakers to believe Judgment Day was coming. Though the unusual blackened sky, later called the "Dark Day," was most likely caused by a mix of smoke from forest fires and heavy fog, it sent the religious sect on a mission to spread their message of celibacy as the path to redemption. We assume this caused a particularly large amount of grief when humanity was not extinguished. REASON 3: March 21, 1843 March 21, 1844 William Miller confused thousands of followers, or Millerites, when he declared that the world would end between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844. When the year rolled over and nothing happened, the date was moved to October 22, 1844. After Jesus failed to arrive for the second time (known as the "Great Disappointment"), some members went on to form the Seventh Day Adventists. REASON 4: 1914 In 1876, Charles Taze Russell, founder of the Jehovah's Witnesses (originally known as Zion's Watch Tower Society), predicted that Christ would return in 1914. Since that prophecy failed, the society has promised at least seven other dates when Armageddon would occur. The world still hasn't ended and the group is now best known for distributing religious pamphlets door-to-door and refusing blood transfusions. REASON 5: March 10, 1982 In 1974, astrophysicists John Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann published The Jupiter Effect, which claimed that on March 10, 1982, the planets would align on the same side of the Sun creating gravitational effects that would lead to catastrophic earthquakes. It goes without saying, the book was eventually followed by The Jupiter Effect Reconsidered. REASON 6: Y2K (January 1, 2000) Nobody was really sure what would happen on January 1, 2000, except that it necessitated stockpiling bottled water, D batteries, and guns. The fear was that computers would not understand the year "00," reading it as 1900 instead of 2000. Presumably, this would cause the technological universe to collapse. The millennium came. Everyone was fine. A few people were disappointed about spending their life-savings on a doomsday bunker. REASON 7: May 21, 2011 Harold Camping, president of the Family Radio Network, created a lot of hoopla last spring when he predicted that world would end in a series of rolling earthquakes known as "The Rapture." After May 21 came and went sans any signs of hell-fire and brimstone, Camping pushed The End back to October 21. No word yet on why we're all still here, although the 90-year-old preacher has decided to stop making predictions, resigning from his post shortly after the second failed doomsday forecast. []

Rented Silence by Lucia Mann

A woman was recently sentenced to 140 months in prison after using two Nigerian immigrants as personal unpaid servants in her luxury home in Atlanta, Georgia. A few days later, two Ukrainian brothers were convicted of smuggling desperate villagers into the United States to work long hours, cleaning retail stores and office buildings at little or no pay. The prosecuting U.S. attorney in Philadelphia, Daniel Velez, said it was modern-day slavery. Its hiding in plain sight. However, according to a woman who lived through the racial prejudice, segregation and slavery in post-World War II Europe, the slavery crisis in the modern world is far greater than that. Anyone who thinks slavery died when America abolished it in the 1800s has a shock coming to them, said Lucia Mann, whose mother was a sex slave and a WWII concentration camp survivor. Mann, a former journalist and author of Rented Silence (www.rentedsilence.com), a novel about slavery and racial prejudice based on her life experiences and those of other persecuted souls she witnessed says, According to the United Nations, there are more than 27 million slaves worldwide, which are more than twice the number of those who were enslaved over the 400 years that transatlantic slavers trafficked humans to work in the Americas. Many are forced into prostitution while others are used as unpaid laborers used to manufacture goods many of us buy in the U.S. In fact, its almost impossible to buy clothes or goods anymore without inadvertently supporting the slave trade. "Rented Silence is a story of human suffering during a brutal period in the British Colonial history. But at the same time it is an inspiration tale of hope and love, but mostly the testimony of the human spirit to survive against the odds. Rented Silence will move you to tears, anger and a wide range of other emotions and will make you ask: Where was God in the midst of this evil? Rented Silence will stay with you long after you've closed the book."

About Lucia Mann : Lucia Man is part Sicilian and part British South African, born in British Colonial South Africa in the wake of WWII. She is a citizen of Britain and Canada who recently applied for a U.S. Green Card because she believes she is an American at heart. She was educated in London, England and retired from freelance journalism in 1998. After suffering from racial prejudice most of her early life because she was part Italian and part South African, she saw and felt firsthand the pain and suffering of those who were thought to be inferior because of the color of their skin. Her mission is to end prejudice and slavery now and in the future.

Super-comet or Super-Dud?
Super-comet or superdud? We'll see
by Alan Boyle
A new comet superstar named C/2012 S1 (ISON) is heading for the spotlight starting in November 2013 but will it perform as some hope it will, or will it be a dud of cosmic proportions? "This is one to watch, definitely," said Karl Battams, a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory who monitors comets for the NASA-supported Sungrazer Comet Project. "But the astronomy community in general tries not to overhype these things. Potentially it will be amazing. Potentially it will be a huge dud." Comet ISON quickly rose to the top of the charts after its discovery, which was based on imagery collected on Friday by the International Scientific Optical Network's 16inch (0.4-meter) Santel reflecting telescope in Russia. The comet, which was described in an IAU circular on Monday, takes its common name from the network's acronym. Since the discovery, astronomers have gone back through their files to find "pre-discovery" images and calculate the comet's orbit. That orbit is due to bring Comet ISON incredibly close to the sun within just 1.1 million miles (1.8 million kilometers) in late November of next year. As a result, current projections suggest it could get very bright. How bright? Various estimates have set the brightest magnitude at -10 to -16. That suggests the comet could become brighter than the full moon which led Astronomy Magazine's Michael E. Bakich to say it "probably will become the brightest comet anyone alive has ever seen." Over the next year, you're going to hear a lot of comparisons to stunners of the past, as long ago as the Great Comet of 1680 and as recent as the Great Comet of 2007. You'll also hear comparisons to past letdowns, ranging from Comet Kohoutek to Comet Elenin. You may also hear a fresh wave of doomsday talk, like the ridiculous rumblings that accompanied Elenin's approach. Don't believe anything you hear about a comet catastrophe and don't get your hopes up just yet for a comet extravaganza. But do make plans to keep an eye on the sky in late 2013. Battams said a lot depends on Comet ISON's composition. "It could turn into a huge letdown if it's a comet that's just too fragile and dissipates as it makes its way into the inner solar system," he told me. That's basically what happened to Comet Elenin. Because ISON appears to be a "new" comet coming in from the far-flung Oort cloud, it's tough to predict how the comet will behave. The comet is currently in the constellation Cancer, as indicated in this star chart from Astronomy Magazine. When the comet hits prime time, a year from now, it should be heading through the constellation Virgo and visible from northern latitudes before sunrise. During the months ahead, astronomers

of all stripes will be keeping a watch on Comet ISON and refining their expectations. "I would imagine that by next summer, we should have a much better handle on it," Battams said. In the meantime, check out the chatter on SpaceWeather.com, the Remanzacco Observatory's comet blog and the Comets Mailing List. Top 10 Facts Surrounfind Comet Elenin 10: What is a Comet? In some rare cases, a Great Comet can form which is brighter than any star in the sky. It has been estimated that one Great Comet will appear every decade. The requirements for a Great Comet include a large and active nucleus, a close approach to the Sun, and a close approach to the Earth. In 1996, Comet Hyakutake, which had a similar sized nucleus as Comet Elenin, made an extremely close approach to Earth. The Ulysses spacecraft

crossed the Hyakutakes tail at a distance of more than 500 million kilometers (3.3 AU or 3108 mi) from the nucleus, showing that Hyakutake had the longest tail known for a comet.

The Spanish flu killed more Americans in one year than WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam combined. Each year, an average of 20,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized because of flu-related complications. Researchers estimate that if everyone routinely washed their hands, a million deaths a year could be prevented. Florida had almost 1.5 billion dollars in flood damage from 1978 to 2011. On December 10, 2010, an amateur Russian astronomer named Leonid Elenin discovered a long-period comet in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The near-earth object was given the name of Elenin and was estimated to be 3-4 km in diameter. Almost immediately after the discovery was announced, articles began to appear on the Internet that claimed the comet was dangerous to Earth. People began to make connections between Elenin and extinction level events. It was originally estimated that the comet would pass within .24 Au (Astronomical Units) of the Earth, which is pretty close. The distance is closer than the Hale-Bopp Comet of 1997, which gained more media attention. The story reached a larger audience after it was disclosed that while using the JPL Horizons system with an observed orbital arc of 235 days, the comet shows an orbital period of approximately 11,800 years. In the history of Earth, 12,000 years ago was a sensitive time and the bridge between the Pleistocene and Holocene geological epochs.

astronomer named Leonid Elenin, who was born in 1981 and 17-years-old when Deep Impact came out. It is a coincidence that a man named Elenin discovered a near-earth comet. After the discovery was announced, articles began to appear on the Internet with acronyms for ELENIN, including extinction level event, near impact or extinction level event nine (indicating 9 out of 10 on the danger scale or the end of the ninth wave of the Mayan Calendar). Some said 11/9, as in November 9, when the debris tail of Elenin was predicted to be closest to Earth. In Deep Impact, a black U.S. president decides to send a mission to blow up the comet with nuclear weapons. The mission succeeds and the comet is separated into sections. However, a piece still hits Earth. After the impact, the president declares martial law, and reveals that the government has been building underground shelters. In the end of the movie, humanity is spared after the larger comet is demolished.

6: Hopi Blue Star

In early August of 2011, NASA decided to get a picture of Comet Elenin, so they rotated the STEREO-B spacecraft and photographed it. In the picture, the comet appears to be a deep blue color. The color has caused people to make comparisons between the object and the ancient Hopi Indian prophecy of the blue star. The legend states, When the Blue Star Kachina makes its appearance in the heavens, the Fifth World will emerge. The Maya also have stories of a dangerous blue star. The color of Elenin has caused Richard C Hoagland to suggest it is the Hopi Blue Star, a claim which has spawned a number of articles. A man named Carl Johan Calleman, who is a Swedish toxicologist that specializes in Maya history, also claims that Comet Elenin was the blue star featured in ancient history. Calleman holds a different interpretation of the Maya Calendar all together. He says that the calendar points to the date of October 28, 2011 (not December 21, 2012) as the most important, a day when people will experience a slow transformation of consciousness and reach a higher unity. Before the discovery of Elenin, Calleman identified the time when the comet passed by earth (end of October, 2011) as the critical time. (Continued on Page 27)

7: Predictions
Since Comet Elenin was discovered, NASA was adamant in the fact that the comet would not come close enough to strike or harm the Earth in any way. People responded by using a collection of hypothetical scenarios for disaster. For example, if Elenin was to hit an asteroid while passing through the Main Asteroid Belt, it could have been thrown off its predicted trajectory and pushed toward an imminent crash with Earth. People began to fear the comets massive coma. By August, 2011, Elenins coma exceeded 200,000 km. (124,274 miles). It was predicted that on November 6, 2011, the Earth was going to pass through the comets debris tail. People began to make a connection between the comet and its alignment with the earth, sun, and moon. Some felt that the gravitational pull of Elenin caused a collection of earthquakes and geological events. The story reached a new level of popularity after the March 11 Thoku earthquake and tsunami because a number of websites had published the date of March 15, 2011 as an alignment event. Comet Elenin was predicted to be closest to Earth on October 16, 2011 and the debris field arrived in early November.

8: Deep Impact
One of the reasons Comet Elenin has received so much attention is that it holds similarities to the blockbuster movie Deep Impact (1998). For starters, in the movie, the comet is found by a teenage boy named Leo and referred to as Elle (extinction level event). In reality, it was discovered by a young Russian

Remembrance Day - November 11

by John McCrae, May 1915

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Inspiration for In Flanders Fields

During the early days of the Second Battle of Ypres a young Canadian artillery officer, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, was killed on 2nd May, 1915 in the gun positions near Ypres. An exploding German artillery shell landed near him. He was serving in the same Canadian artillery unit as a friend of his, the Canadian military doctor and artillery commander Major John McCrae. As the brigade doctor, John McCrae was asked to conduct the burial service for Alexis because the chaplain had been called away somewhere else on duty that evening. It is believed that later that evening, after the burial, John began the draft for his now famous poem In Flanders Fields.

10 Facts Surrounding Comet Elenin

Top 10 Facts Surrounding Comet Elenin
Continued from Page 25 5: 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdukov
45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdukov is a short-period comet discovered in 1948. The comet has an elliptical orbit of 5.26 years and a nucleus estimated to be 0.5-1.6 kilometers in diameter. On August 15, 2011, Honda made a close approach of only 0.0600 AU (8,980,000 km; 5,580,000 mi) to Earth. On August 19, the same day that Comet Elenin was destroyed by a coronal mass ejection, Honda was studied by the Goldstone Deep Space Network. The network detected echoes from the nucleus of Honda and it became only the fifteenth comet in history to be detected by radar. After the discovery of Comet Elenin was made public, people began to examine the trajectory of the comet in relation to Honda. It appeared that the two objects would come relatively close to hitting on September 28 or 29 of 2011. For this reason, people began to fear the date and predict earthquakes and disasters for late September. Articles were written that hypothesized that the shifting of Elenins path could push it into Honda. 255P/Levy is another comet that was mentioned with Elenin. Levy came within 0.2359 AU (35,290,000 km; 21,930,000 mi) of Earth on January 26, 2012.

4: 2005 YU55
Meteors are generated when debris enters and burns up in Earths atmosphere. Some astronomers have reported that meteor swarms correspond closely to the orbits of known comets. Meteor showers are not threatening to the Earth because the comets tail usually doesnt hold large objects. On December 28, 2005, a potentially hazardous asteroid was discovered by Robert S. McMillan and named 2005 YU55. It is approximately 400 m (1,312 feet) in diameter and caused concern for NASA. On November 8, 2011, YU55 passed by Earth at a lunar distance of 324,900 kilometers (201,883 miles). It was the closest pass by a large asteroid since 1976. Another object this size in not predicted to come this close to Earth until 2028. After Comet Elenin started to gain attention, people began to connect it with 2005 YU55 because of the date November 9, 2011 (11/9/11). On this date, the tail of Elenin was predicted to be the closest to Earth, along with 2005 YU55. This has caused some people to speculate that a collision between the two objects was possible.

The general rule is that NEOs have an apsis distance of less than 1.3 AU. As of May 2012, 8,971 NEOs have been discovered. Of these, only 91 are near-Earth comets and 8,880 near-Earth Asteroids. This makes the discovery of Comet Elenin rare. Even rarer is how close the remnants of the comet came to Earth on October 16, 2011. It passed at a distance of 0.2338 AU, which is really close in comparison to other famous comets of size. A number of smaller asteroids have made closer approaches. One of importance was asteroid 2010 AL30, which passed by Earth on January 13, 2010 at the distance of 122,000 km (76,000 mi). AL30 was only 10-15 m (33-49 ft) wide, but if the asteroid had entered the Earths atmosphere, it would have created an air burst equivalent to between 50 kT and 100 kT (kilotons of TNT). The Hiroshima Little Boy atom bomb had a yield between 13-18kT. This shows how important it is to keep comets of any size away from the Earths atmosphere. 2: The Destruction of Elenin By August, 2011, the visibility of Comet Elenin was around 8.3. The comet followed the predictions of NASA until August 19, 2011, when it was destroyed by a coronal mass ejection (CME). A coronal mass ejection is a massive burst of solar wind. During the event, Comet Elenin disintegrated and broke apart. According to NASA officials, it was a rare occurrence and only 2% of new comets that approach the sun are destroyed in this manner. By mid-October 2011, Elenin made its closest pass to Earth, but was nothing more than a pile of rubble. The object was not visible by even large ground-based telescopes. The post-disintegration appearance of Elenin was compared to the debris field of Shoemaker-Levy 9, which was abundant. The remnants of the comet will act as other brokenup comets act. They will trail along in a debris cloud that will follow a well-understood path out of the inner solar system. After that, we

wont see the scraps of comet Elenin around these parts for almost 12 millennia. With all the controversy surrounding Elenin, the unusual destruction of the comet has caused a lasting image. In the week prior to the coronal mass ejection, articles were posted online that suggested the European Space Agency had a plan to destroy an asteroid headed toward Earth. Specifically, the website of the Daily Mail posted an article titled Fact following fiction? Scientists plan mission to blow up an asteroid hurtling towards Earth. The article was last updated on August 18, 2011, one day before Elenin was destroyed. It discussed the Don Quijote space probe. The probe could be used to study the effects of crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid.

1: Stance of NASA
NASA has released a collection of statements regarding Comet Elenin. In each case, the organization has downplayed the importance of the object and its potential impact on Earth. After the comet was destroyed in space, Don Yeomans of NASA said: I cannot begin to guess why this little comet became such a big Internet sensation. The scientific reality is this modest-sized icy dirtballs influence upon our planet is so incredibly minuscule that my subcompact automobile exerts a greater gravitational influence on earth than the comet ever would. Yeomans explains how the destruction of the comet was a rare, but possible: comets are fragile and loosely held together like dust balls, so it doesnt take much to get a comet to disintegrate, and with comets, once they break up, there is no hope of reconciliation. The stance of NASA is that they dont want to talk about Elenin because it doesnt deserve mention in comparison to other problems. Yeoman is quoted: Comet Elenin has rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-comet. []

3: General Significance
After Comet Elenin was discovered, many people expected the story to be mentioned in the mainstream U.S. media, but it wasnt. This caused some to suspect that NASA was keeping secrets. The general significance of Comet Elenin was large. In the United States, NASA has a congressional mandate to catalogue all near-Earth objects that are at least 1 kilometer wide. The impact of such an object would be catastrophic to Earth. Studies show that the United States and China are most vulnerable areas to meteor strikes.

Explaining Dec 21 2012 To A Child

How to Talk to Your Child About December 21 2012
by Gregg Prescott, M.S.
www.in5d.com www.maya12-21-2012.com www.HolisticCancerResearch.com
The date December 21 2012 is constantly being portrayed as an apocalyptic doomsday by the main stream media and is reinforced through the plethora of doomsday websites that paint a fearladened view of what the Mayan calendar and 2012 represents. Our children and subject to this brainwashing on a perpetual basis and will most likely follow what theyve heard if their parent(s) dont speak to them about what December 21, 2012 truly represents. Personally, I believe that one should educate his or herself enough in this area before discussing this topic with your children. You wont find any relevant information on the news or on the Discovery Channel. Ive watched the television documentaries and EVERY TIME, they relate 2012 to words such as apocalypse or doomsday. Why? Because its the job of the main stream media to sell FEAR. Thats why you never feel good after watching the 6 oclock news. The movie, 2012, was filled with doom and gloom and did not foretell an accurate picture of what December 21, 2012 really means. While the special effects were amazing, most of the premise behind the movie was flawed. The main issue is that there are no Mayan prophecies in the Popol Vuh (the Mayan Creation Myth), the Dresden Codices or the Chilam Balam that state that 2012 will be an apocalypse or doomsday. This is the real truth. There are many other indigenous civilizations that also have a 2012 end date to their calendar and systems. None of these end dates are apocalyptic or view December 21, 2012 as a doomsday. 2012 represents the end date of the Mayan Long Count calendar, which is an approximate 26,000 year cycle that is broken into 5 equal periods. While it is true that each of the previous periods ended in cataclysm, the 5TH world does not. This is perceived to be the end of the world as we know it. We are currently witnessing a period in time that is unprecedented in earth changes such as tsunamis, 7.0+ earthquakes, sinkholes, massive land cracks, solar flares, mass animal die offs, etc These changes are representing a change in humanity as well. People are standing up to oppressive governments and are discovering the hidden truths behind religion and politics. Were learning information at an exponential rate and this is expanding our consciousness exponentially as well. In alchemy, there is a saying, as above, so below. This can also be internalized as, as on the outside, so within. Our entire solar system is going through dramatic climate changes, and these changes are being reflected in how we perceive ourselves and our surroundings. This is why many people are going through various life changes, such as ending a bad relationship, unemployment,

financial stress, etc This is the time when people need to reflect within versus relying on the opinion of the main stream media for any truth. How we handle this with our children is very subjective, depending on the childs age. A child under 10 years old only needs to know that there are no 2012 prophecies that state the world will end in 2012. Give your child the reassurance that he or she has nothing to worry about and the only thing that important is TODAY. Then ask your child, What would you like to do today? That should get their focus off of 2012 and onto their own needs. We can talk a little more to preteens and teens about 2012, such as discussing how they feel about it and where they gathered their information. Knowledge is they key to this conversation, so be prepared to answer their questions. If you dont know an answer, be honest and say, Im not sure but we can both look into it. This will enhance the bond between parent and child by actively doing this together. Teens can be told how none of the Mayan prophecies state that 2012 will be apocalyptic. It is also important to give your preteen or teen the reassurance that 2012 is not a doomsday event. It is important to see how these occurances are connected to societal changes as well as changes in our solar system. Please use discretion because some teens may seem mature, but are not ready for talking about this type of material. Remember when you were a teenager? We thought we knew everything. Many teens wont talk about this issue to their parents because they either never heard of it or have already formed their conclusions. I wouldnt recommend forcing them to talk about 2012. Theyll talk about it when theyre ready, just be sure youre prepared as a parent to answer their questions. Pope dismisses December doomsday

Pope Benedict XVI has called on Christians not to heed doomsday warnings that the world will end on December 21. During his weekly Angelus address from the window of his Vatican apartments on St Peters Square, Benedict spoke of extracts from the Bible that speak of the sun and moon going out, the stars falling from the sky. Several films and documentaries have promoted the idea that the ancient Mayan calendar predicts that doomsday is next month, on December 21, 2012. But Benedict said that Jesus does not describe the end of the world, and when he uses apocalyptic images, he is not acting the prophet. On the contrary, he wants to stop his disciples of every epoch from being curious over dates, forecasts, and wants to give them the key to ... the right road to walk today and tomorrow to enter into the eternal life, he said. As many as 90,000 people are expected to attend a massive event in Guatemala City on December 21, just in case the world actually does end, while tour groups are promoting doomsday-themed getaways. Debunking the End of the World Myth

Debunking the End of the World Myth
WHSV.com
You have heard the stories, you have seen movie trailers and maybe you even know someone who believes. Did the ancient Maya civilization actually predict the end of the world in December 2012? Shanil Verani, director of the John C Wells Planetarium at James Madison University, said the Maya were very smart. "It's absolutely true that they had a fantastic calendar, said Verani. They were fantastic astronomers. They knew about the position of the planets in the nighttime sky. They could know, they were able to tell when the planets would rise and set, but many cultures did this," Verani said. Verani explained, this is where the facts and the theories start to deviate from the truth. He said people have taken a kernel of truth and exaggerate it. "The kernel in the Maya myth is that they had a calendar and that it's turning over. That's true. Both of those things are true. But, then they extrapolate from it into nonsense," said Verani. The Maya long count calendar started over 5000 years ago and on Dec 21, the calendar does not end. It just marks the end of the 13th cycle. This long cycle is called a Baktun and each one lasts 144,000 days or 394.26 years. Verani said the calendar is really just resetting and not predicting a catastrophe. "This is absolute nonsense, complete rubbish. The calendar comes to an end, our calendar comes to an end every year. It's called December 31. We flip the calendar, or we get a new one I should say, and we throw the old one in the trash can. That's exactly what they would have done. They would have just started a new cycle," said Verani. He said that "massive solar storms," "an alignment of planets," or even an "alignment with the center of our galaxy" do not pose a threat. "These are all scare tactics. These are all meant to either find some way to funnel money from you to these people to come up with some kind of gizmo that they can sell you, or to scare you," said Verani. So who are the believers? It was tough to find anyone in the area who did believe the world would "end" this December, but we did find people preparing for a change. Freda is from the Valley and she has been preparing for the worst. She is preparing, but not for what many people are calling the end of the world. Rather she wanted to prepare for big, world-wide changes. She is stock piling years worth of food, saying that she has just about run out of mason jars. Freda's stock pile also includes weapons and antibiotics. "It could be a situation where somebody's got a wound, and they're getting infections or bronchitis, or pneumonia, or things

that used to kill our forefathers," said Freda. These "preppers," as they are often called, say the Maya calendar may have first incited their curiosity and fear. Further research has led many of them to believe the date may just mark a new era of human history. It is a new era that they believe deems preparation. Freda said preppers simply take a sense of self responsibility to be able to survive as best they can on their own. "I can not express enough my concern about women's hygiene. Get those tampons stacked up and pads," said Freda. Freda has her own YouTube channel and runs her own business to try and help others. If we have a devastating storm, earthquake, economic collapse, viral outbreak or any other disaster, Freda explained she wants to be able to help herself and won't need to rely on anyone else or the government. For those who still may fear the December 2012 apocalypse, Verani said to view the Maya calendar like an odometer in your car. "It's just like your odometer that's at 99,999 miles and the next mile you drive, it turns over to 100,000 miles right? That's exactly what this calendar is going to do," said Verani. Archaeologists also believe as recently as 2010, they found a new Maya calendar that carries on an additional 4,000 years beyond the 21st century. []

Doomsday Facts: Earthquakes and Oil Shortages

National Geographic Society
The United States uses an average of 19,148,000 barrels of oil a day. While the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve houses the largest stockpile of government-owned crude oil in the worlda staggering 727 million barrelsif the U.S. were cut off from foreign oil, this reserve would last less than 38 days. The Earths magnetic field has weakened 10 percent since the 19th century.

There are more than 12,000 earthquakes recorded each year, varying in destructiveness from minor to catastrophic. The most devastating earthquake in recorded history occurred in central China in the 16th century. It killed over 800,000 people, and some think it may have even tipped 8.0 on the Richter scale. On December 26, 2004, Sumatra experienced an earthquake so powerful (9.1 on the Richter scale) that it actually shortened the length of the day by 6.8 microseconds and changed the rotation of the earths axis by 7 centimeters. The north magnetic pole was first located in 1831 by James Ross; the trip took four full years. In 1904, Roald Amundsen made his own trip to the pole only to realize that it had moved 50 kilometers since Rosss discovery. The Oil Depletion Analysis Center has estimated that since commercial drilling began in the mid-19th century, humans have used as much as a trillion barrels of crude oil. The first seismoscope, an instrument used to measure movements of the earth's crust, was invented in A.D. 132 by Chang Hng. The device, which resembled a large wine vessel, had eight dragons each facing one of the primary directions of the compass, each with a ball in its mouth. Below each dragon was a matching toad with an open mouth. When the device sensed an earthquake, the dragon pointing in the direction the quake originated would drop its ball. The theory of true polar wander postulates that over time, the redistribution of weight on the surface of the earth (i.e., the continents moving, volcanoes erupting, ice fields melting and reforming elsewhere) eventually causes the earths rotational axis to change. While some are afraid this will affect modern life, the process happens gradually and would take millions of years to complete. Saudi Arabia produces the most oil of any country in the world at an astonishing nine million barrels a day. There are over 500,000 detectable earthquakes each year. Of that, 100,000 can be felt, and only 100 cause actual damage. []

The Maya Culture

THE MAYA CULTURE
Ancient Mayan culture once stretched from central Mexico to Honduras. It also included parts of what is now Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador. More than 40 cities were founded on the Yuctan Peninsula in Mexico (and elsewhere) where they have now become tourist attractions. The climate here is warm and tropical. Today about 7 million people would call themselves Mayan or would say they have Mayan ancestors. Most of these people live in Mexico. HISTORY Records show that the first people to live on the Yuctan peninsula were hunters and gatherers who were nomads and lived in small family units. These first inhabitants arrived around 9,000 BC. The Maya arrived in the Yuctan area much later, around 2,600 BC. They were heavily influenced by the civilizations before them on the peninsula, such as the Olmec and Izapan. Mayan culture expanded quickly, as they developed new tools and scientific methods. City-states of between 5,000 and 50,000 people were created and large temples resembling pyramids were built to honor the gods. The most famous of these is Chichen Itza in the Yucatan. The height of Mayan civilization was around 250 AD. For reasons still unknown Mayan civilization went into decline around 900 AD. The Maya in the Southern part of their territory left their cities around this time. The Northern Maya, on the other hand, became part of the Toltec society around 1200 AD. This was the end of the powerful Maya city-state civilization, although some Mayan cities survived until the Spanish arrived several hundred years later. After the decline of the great Mayan cities the Maya returned to a simpler way of life, living mostly in villages. The great cities and temples quickly disappeared in the jungle vegetation. The first contact between Europeans and the Maya is mentioned in the journal of Christopher Columbus during his fourth voyage to the Americas in 1502. His ship spotted large canoes in the water that could fit more than 40 people. Many more Spanish arrived throughout the 16th century and tried to completely destroy Mayan culture. In many ways they were successful. Helped by brutal repression, superior weapons, disease, droughts and internal wars, the Spanish quickly defeated the Maya. Most traces of their rich culture were removed. We know, for instance, that the Maya used maps and wrote in books during the Middle Ages, but these were destroyed by the Spanish. Though the Spanish succeeded in destroying most of Mayan culture and converting the Maya to Christianity, resistance continues until today. There have been very recent uprisings in Chiapas (Mexico) by peasants who feel they are being exploited. The Mexican government and the native population are involved in difficult discussions about the future of this area of Mexico. RELIGION The ancient Maya believed that the earth

was flat (like most other civilizations at that time) and that it had four corners. Some Maya believed that the earth was actually the back of a huge crocodile, resting in a pool of water lilies. Heaven was believed to have four layers, and each layer had its own god. The underworld, a cold unhappy place, had nine layers. The Maya believed that when the sun and moon set (helped by the gods) they went through this underworld. The mountains and hills are believed to be the homes of such ancient gods. Mayan priests were in control of education and rituals. Because they could marry, their sons often succeeded them. Priests were also responsible for bloodletting and human sacrifice. Bloodletting was an important part of many rituals. Blood was offered to the gods to please them and to nourish them. Human sacrifice was also quite common. Prisoners, slaves and many children were killed to please the gods. Especially orphans and illegitimate children suffered this fate. The Maya believed that when you died

you entered the underworld through a cave. Kings, however, would be reborn as gods in the sky. Ordinary people who died were buried beneath the floors of their houses, their mouths filled with food for the voyage. Important noblemen, however, were cremated. Maya traditional religion survives until today, but now contains many elements of the Christian faith. Nevertheless, many Mayans today believe, as the original Mayans did, in the influence of the cosmos and the need to pay homage to the gods through rituals. The sun is now associated with the Christian belief in God and Jesus Christ and the moon with the Virgin Mary. The Maya Culture

The Maya Culture
Continued from Page 31
SOCIETY, ECONOMY AND POLITICS The Mayan world consisted of many city-states that shared language, religion and customs. On the whole, despite ritualistic human sacrifices, their culture seemed to be less violent and more artistic than other large civilizations of this period. The ancient Maya used what is called a "slash and burn" technique to clear a forest and to establish agriculture. This allowed them to stop migrating and develop cities. Their main crops were maize, beans, beans, squash and tobacco. Mayan society was arranged according to a strict hierarchy. Nobles and kings had a great deal of power, as did priests. Slave ownership was quite common. Trade was an important feature of Mayan society. The Mayan used the Caribbean to connect one part of their empire to other parts. Around 300 BC the Maya started setting up a large system of trade over water (also using rivers), and developed many sea routes. For centuries after that period in time there were wealthy merchants who used large canoes to trade a variety of goods, such as salt, animal pelts, feathers, cacao, gold, honey, cloth, knives, etc. The merchants even had their own god and protector (Ek Chuah). Those who are descended from the Maya find themselves a minority throughout Central America, and have been subject to much political repression. They are also quite often poor, with few rights. Many Mayans today do not have access to good health care or education. Many Maya from Guatemala have also had to flee the country as refugees during the last decades due to civil wars and conflict. Thousands have died at the hands of killing squads, civil war and other violence. Most have fled to the United States, Mexico and Canada. Many have also had to move from their homes in Guatemala because large logging companies have cut down parts of the rain forest, taking away the livelihood of these people. CULTURE Ancient Mayan culture was one of the most advanced anywhere in the world. The Mayans were skilled potters, weavers, architects, sculptors and painters. Their many temples, pyramids and palaces were beautifully decorated and have survived the test of time. They are now major tourist attractions. Mayan weaving is very popular throughout the world and one can find Mayan blankets, backpacks, purses, wallets, etc. in any country of the Western world. The Maya were one of the most advanced societies anywhere in the world when it came to their scientific developments, especially mathematics, medicine and astronomy. For instance, they developed the concept of the number zero and various other mathematical theories. The Mayan language was also a highly developed form of hieroglyphics, and is still spoken, although Spanish is now the dominant language in the countries where the Maya live. accomplished," Restall said. "But this led to a lot of myth-making and ultimately we lost sight of who the Mayans really are. The idea behind a book like The Maya World is not to romanticize a people, but to see how they truly lived their lives, how they conducted their affairs day in and day out." Besides demystifying the Mayans, Restall said, The Maya World focuses on a period less examined than the pre-Columbian and modern eras of Mayan history. By the time of Spain's conquest of Mexico in the mid-16th century, he said, the Mayans had shifted northward from their earlier, more well-known settlements in Guatemala to the Yucatan peninsula. During this colonial period, the Mayans adapted the Roman alphabet to their own language for keeping legal and other records, and it was this material Restall used as the basis for the book. "The Spanish colonization did have an effect, but this was still very much a Mayan culture," Restall said. "That is why it was so important to look through the records from this period. You see that some terms convey multiple meanings which the colonialists' language simply cannot describe. Using the indigenous language sources and the terminology as it was, you can reconstruct the society and culture." For example, Restall explains, the Mayan word "cah" (which can only be translated loosely as a self-governing community) was critical to describing their community organization, but the term was largely ignored by historians relying on imprecise translations from the Spanish colonists. Similarly, he said, Spaniards did not have a firm understanding of Mayan class structure, thus creating more gaps in their accounts of the period. Restall, however, combed through 65 wills from a Mayan community in the 1760s and was able to identify the socioeconomic classes and their relationships with one another. The class structure was not especially distinct, he said, and rather than resembling "a tidy pyramid was more like a five-story building with a pyramid on top." "There were definitely families that were rich and powerful, but the distribution of wealth was not grossly unequal," Restall said. "There was a lot of intermarrying within class levels and the transition from one level to another was imprecise. This was certainly not a caste society." Restall also found other aspects of Mayan society more elaborate or complex than in previous descriptions. "Mayans were originally depicted as centering their life around religion," he explained. "In fact, their maintaining of saint cults was only one of many ways they affirmed their community. There are a lot of details provided by the Mayan documents which in and of themselves do not fundamentally alter popular views, but together add up to a different picture." Seen this way, he said, Mayans "emerge as a people we can better relate to, more human than before, really. We don't have to view them as especially noble or savage. Looking at a society as they look at themselves gives a far clearer image." []

Myths Of The Maya

Historian Restall says popular image of an exotic and violent society overlooks a rich, complicated culture
By Sean Smith Staff Writer The familiar image of the Mayans as a mysterious, exotic society is cultivated through popular magazine articles and TV documentaries. But, says Asst. Prof. Matthew Restall (History), that image is largely mythical. "Mayans have been thought of as peace-loving 'priest kings' who built pyramids and wrote hieroglyphs," Restall explained, "or violent, war-like people who engaged in human sacrifice. Then, the story goes, suddenly the whole society collapsed and disappeared." Restall tells a far different, and less sensational, story in his forthcoming book The Maya World: Yucatec Culture and Society, 1550-1850 . Translating archival material from original Mayan language, Restall has constructed a social and cultural history of the Mayans during the period they were under Spanish colonial rule. The book describes household and family relations, gender roles, class structures, sociopolitical organization, and other aspects of Mayans' everyday life. The Maya World represents a departure from most traditional approaches to Mayan research, Restall says, and aims to put the Mayans in a more realistic light. Asst. Top 10 Fascinating Mayan Facts

Top 10 Fascinating Facts About The Mayans
The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Many misconceptions about the mayans exist, and this list should put an end to at least one or two of them. In addition, it will introduce you to facts that you never knew about this great ancient civilization.

10. Continuing Culture

The Fact: There are numerous Mayans still living in their home regions In fact, there are over seven million Mayans living in their home regions, many of whom have managed to maintain substantial remnants of their ancient cultural heritage. Some are quite integrated into the modern cultures of the nations in which they reside, while others continue a more traditional culturally distinct life, often speaking one of the Mayan languages as a primary language. The largest populations of contemporary Maya inhabit the Mexican states of Yucatn, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Chiapas, and in the Central American countries of Belize, Guatemala, and the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador. Just as a point of interest, it is very possible that the word shark comes to us from the Mayan languages, as does the word cocoa. To say thank you in Yucatec Maya, you say Jach Dyos bo'otik.

for the purpose of healing, foresight, and control over natural events. Since medicine was so closely related to religion and sorcery, it was essential that Maya shamans had vast medical knowledge and skill. It is known that the Maya sutured wounds with human hair, reduced fractures, and were even skilled dental surgeons, making prostheses from jade and turquoise and filling teeth with iron pyrite.

7. Blood Sacrifice
The Fact: Some Mayans still practice blood sacrifice It is a rather well known fact that the Mayans practiced human sacrifice for religious and medical reasons but what most people dont know is that many Mayans still practice blood sacrifice. But dont get too excited chicken blood has now replaced human blood. Today the Maya keep many of the ritualistic traditions of their ancestors. Elements of prayer, offerings, blood sacrifice (replacing human blood with that of sacrificed chickens), burning of copal incense, dancing, feasting, and ritual drinking continue in traditional ceremonies.

of elite cultural events and ritual activities like musical performances and festivals, and of course, the ballgame. Enclosed on two sides by stepped ramps that led to ceremonial platforms or small temples, the ball court itself was of a capital I shape and could be found in all but the smallest of Maya cities. In Classic Maya, the ballgame was called pitz, and the action of play was ti pitziil. The game was played with a ball roughly the size of a volleyball but made from rubber and heavier. Decapitation is particularly associated with the ballgame severed heads are featured in much Late Classic ballgame art. There has even been speculation that the heads and skulls were used as balls.

4. Saunas
The Fact: The Mayans used saunas An important purification element to the ancient Maya was the sweat bath, or zumpul-ch. Similar to a modern day sauna, sweat baths were constructed of stone walls and ceilings, with a small opening in the top of the ceiling. Water poured onto the hot rocks in the room created steam, offering a setting in which to sweat out impurities. Sweat baths were used for a range of conditions and situations. New mothers who had recently conceived a child would seek revitalization in them, while individuals who were sick could find healing power in sweating. Maya kings made a habit out of visiting the sweat baths as well because it left them feeling refreshed and, as they believed, cleaner. (Continued on Page 37)

9. Mayan Childhood
The Fact: The Mayans enhanced the beauty of their children The Maya desired some unnatural physical characteristics for their children. For instance, at a very young age boards were pressed on babies foreheads to create a flattened surface. This process was widespread among the upper class. Another practice was to cross babies eyes. To do this, objects were dangled in front of a newborns eyes, until the newborns eyes were completely and permanently crossed. Another interesting fact about Mayan children is that most were named according to the day they were born. Every day of the year had a specific name for both boys and girls and parents were expected to follow that practice.

6. Painkillers
The Fact: The Mayans used painkillers The Mayan peoples regularly used hallucinogenic drugs (taken from the natural world) in their religious rituals, but they also used them in day to day life as painkillers. Flora such as peyote, the morning glory, certain mushrooms, tobacco, and plants used to make alcoholic substances, were commonly used. In addition, as depicted in Maya pottery and carvings, ritual enemas were used for a more rapid absorption and effect of the substance. Above is a statue of a Mayan enjoying their enema.

8. Excellent Doctors
The Fact: The Mayans had many excellent medical practices Health and medicine among the ancient Maya was a complex blend of mind, body, religion, ritual, and science. Important to all, medicine was practiced only by a select few who were given an excellent education. These men, called shamans, act as a medium between the physical world and spirit world. They practice sorcery

5. Ball Courts
The Fact: The Mayans built ball courts so they could play games The Mesoamerican ballgame was a sport with ritual associations played for over 3000 years by the pre-Columbian peoples of Mesoamerica. The sport had different versions in different places during the millennia, and a modern version of the game, ulama, is still played in a few places by the local indigenous population. Ballcourts were public spaces used for a variety

3. The Last Maya State
The Fact: The last Maya state existed until 1697 The island city of Tayasal was the last independent Mayan kingdom and some Spanish priests peacefully visited and preached to the last Itza king, Canek, as late as 1696. The Itza kingdom finally submitted to Spanish rule on March 13, 1697, to a force led by Martn de Ursua, governor of Yucatn. The famous archeological site and home to the beautiful monuments we are all familiar with was in Chichen Itza, located in this last independent region. Interestingly, much of the land under the monuments is privately owned by one family, whilst the government owns and administers the monuments themselves. lowland region reached their peak during the Classic Period of Maya civilization (A.D. 250 to 900), and built the great stone cities and monuments that have fascinated explorers and scholars of the region. Early Maya, 1800 B.C. to A.D. 250 The earliest Maya settlements date to around 1800 B.C., or the beginning of what is called the Preclassic or Formative Period. The earliest Maya were agricultural, growing crops such as corn (maize), beans, squash and cassava (manioc). During the Middle Preclassic Period, which lasted until about 300 B.C., Maya farmers began to expand their presence both in the highland and lowland regions. The Middle Preclassic Period also saw the rise of the first major Mesoamerican civilization, the Olmecs. Like other Mesamerican peoples, such as the Zapotec, Totonac, Teotihuacn and Aztec, the Maya derived a number of religious and cultural traits--as well as their number system and their famous calendar--from the Olmec. In addition to agriculture, the Preclassic Maya also displayed more advanced cultural traits like pyramid-building, city construction and the inscribing of stone monuments. The Late Preclassic city of Mirador, in the northern Peten, was one of the greatest cities ever built in the pre-Columbian Americas. Its size dwarfed the Classic Maya capital of Tikal, and its existence proves that the Maya flourished centuries before the Classic Period. Cities of Stone: The Classic Maya, A.D. 250900 The Classic Period, which began around A.D. 250, was the golden age of the Maya Empire. Classic Maya civilization grew to some 40 cities, including Tikal, Uaxactn, Copn, Bonampak, Dos Pilas, Calakmul, Palenque and Ro Bec; each city held a population of between 5,000 and 50,000 people. At its peak, the Maya population may have reached 2,000,000. Excavations of Maya sites have unearthed plazas, palaces, temples and pyramids, as well as courts for playing the ball games that were ritually and politically significant to Maya culture. Maya cities were surrounded and supported by a large population of farmers. Though the Maya practiced a primitive type of "slash-and-burn" agriculture, they also displayed evidence of more advanced farming methods, such as irrigation and terracing. The Maya were deeply religious, and worshiped various gods related to nature, including the gods of the sun, the moon, rain and corn. At the top of Maya society were the kings, or "kuhul ajaw" (holy lords), who claimed to be related to gods and followed a hereditary succession. They were thought to serve as mediators between the gods and people on earth, and performed the elaborate religious ceremonies and rituals so important to the Maya culture. 2. Life Goes On
The Fact: The Mayan Calendar does not predict the end of the world in 2012 First of all, the Mayans dont have a calender they have calendars which often interlocked. The calender that has given rise to the myth of the end of the world is the Mayan long count calendar. According to Mayan Mythology, we are living in the fourth world or creation so to speak. The last creation ended on 12.19.19.17.19 of the long count calendar. That sequence will occur again on December 20, 2012. According to the Mayans this is a time of great celebration for having reached the end of a creation cycle. It does not mean the end of the world but the beginning of a new age. Does the world end every December 31st? No we go on to a new year. This is the same as the Mayan creation periods. In fact, the Mayans make many references to dates that fall beyond 2012. The idea of 2012 being the end of the world was actually first suggested by New Age religionist Jos Argelles in his 1987 book The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology.

megafauna. Some scholars have recently theorized that an intense 200 year drought led to the collapse of Maya civilization.

The Rise and Fall of the Maya Empire

History.com
The Maya Empire, centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now Guatemala, reached the peak of its power and influence around the sixth century A.D. The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar-making and mathematics, and left behind an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork. Most of the great stone cities of the Maya were abandoned by A.D. 900, however, and since the 19th century scholars have debated what might have caused this dramatic decline. Locating the Maya The Maya civilization was one of the most dominant indigenous societies of Mesoamerica (a term used to describe Mexico and Central America before the 16th century Spanish conquest). Unlike other scattered indigenous populations of Mesoamerica, the Maya were centered in one geographical block covering all of the Yucatan Peninsula and modern-day Guatemala; Belize and parts of the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas; and the western part of Honduras and El Salvador. This concentration showed that the Maya remained relatively secure from invasion by other Mesoamerican peoples. Within that expanse, the Maya lived in three separate sub-areas with distinct environmental and cultural differences: the northern Maya lowlands on the Yucatan Peninsula; the southern lowlands in the Peten district of northern Guatemala and adjacent portions of Mexico, Belize and western Honduras; and the southern Maya highlands, in the mountainous region of southern Guatemala. Most famously, the Maya of the southern

1. Ancient Mystery
The Fact: No one really knows what caused the collapse of the Mayan culture For reasons that are still debated, the Maya centers of the southern lowlands went into decline during the 8th and 9th centuries and were abandoned shortly thereafter. This decline was coupled with a cessation of monumental inscriptions and large-scale architectural construction. Non-ecological theories of Maya decline are divided into several subcategories, such as overpopulation, foreign invasion, peasant revolt, and the collapse of key trade routes. Ecological hypotheses include environmental disaster, epidemic disease, and climate change. There is evidence that the Maya population exceeded carrying capacity of the environment including exhaustion of agricultural potential and over-hunting of

ABOUT THIS BOOK : The really extraordinary thing about this book is that it tells the story of how one mother embarked on her feverish course of involvement in the AIDS community, in large part to help herself come to terms with the possibility of her son's death. But all that work really doesn't prepare her. She becomes incredibly intimate with a series of strangers, yet she and her son have more and more trouble talking about HIS illness, which is the reason she is doing all this in the first place. She becomes indispensable at the bedsides of countless other people, but when Gary is dying, she still feels helpless, disconnected and as if she'd never set foot in an AIDS hospital room. What is moving about this book is the fact that all this preparation doesn't prepare, because NOTHING can prepare her. Susan Choi, Pulitzer Prize Finalist, American Woman
Freda Wagman is one of the most sincere and caring persons that I have had the pleasure of interviewing. Freda brings with her honesty, integrity, compassion and love to all those who lives she has touched, especially her late son Gary. - Rob McConnell Host of The X Zone Radio & TV Show This book will make you shake your head, laugh, cry and ponder over what has happened during the last 20 years of the AIDS crisis. It is a story of a mother who has to come to terms not only with her son's illness but her fierce protection of his feelings. Beautifully written, you learn how fragile and random life can be. The strength that grows when you open your heart and mind helps us heal from losses life deals all of us. Revealed is a generous soul who has her prized possession taken from her and can only deal with it by giving back to others around her. - Peter Waterloo, San Francisco I was so very overwhelmed by this compelling narrative of the scourge, AIDS epidemic. I was reminded of the Bubonic Plague and what people suffered in those horrific years. What a wonderful and empathetic soul the author is and so giving to others in desperate need of love and care. The account of the saddening travails of her own son, Gary, brought me to tears. Perhaps only a mother can feel and understand what those people were (and are) going through and what looms in their futures. This is truly an important true story. We have much to learn from Ms. Wagman's wide experiences with a variety of young people who had one tragic thing in common -- a war with AIDS. - Bea and Woody, Michigan

The Rise and Fall of the Maya Empire

The Rise and Fall of the Maya Empire
Continued from Page 37
The Maya were deeply religious, and worshiped various gods related to nature, including the gods of the sun, the moon, rain and corn. At the top of Maya society were the kings, or "kuhul ajaw" (holy lords), who claimed to be related to gods and followed a hereditary succession. They were thought to serve as mediators between the gods and people on earth, and performed the elaborate religious ceremonies and rituals so important to the Maya culture. The Classic Maya built many of their temples and palaces in a stepped pyramid shape, decorating them with elaborate reliefs and inscriptions. These structures have earned the Maya their reputation as the great artists of Mesoamerica. Guided by their religious ritual, the Maya also made significant advances in mathematics and astronomy, including the use of the zero and the development of a complex calendar system based on 365 days. Though early researchers concluded that the Maya were a peaceful society of priests and scribes, later evidence--including a thorough examination of the artwork and inscriptions on their temple walls--showed the less peaceful side of Maya culture, including the war between rival Mayan city-states and the importance of torture and human sacrifice to their religious ritual. Serious exploration of Classic Maya sites began in the 1830s. By the early to mid20th century, a small portion of their system of hieroglyph writing had been deciphered, and more about their history and culture became known. Most of what historians know about the Maya comes from what remains of their architecture and art, including stone carvings and inscriptions on their buildings and monuments. The Maya also made paper from tree bark and wrote in books made from this paper, known as codices; four of these codices are known to have survived. Life in the Rainforest One of the many intriguing things about the Maya was their ability to build a great civilization in a tropical rainforest climate. Traditionally, ancient peoples had flourished in drier climates, where the centralized management of water resources (through irrigation and other techniques) formed the basis of society. (This was the case for the Teotihuacan of highland Mexico, contemporaries of the Classic Maya.) In the southern Maya lowlands, however, there were few navigable rivers for trade and transport, as well as no obvious need for an irrigation system. By the late 20th century, researchers had concluded that the climate of the lowlands was in fact quite environmentally diverse. Though foreign invaders were disappointed by the region's relative lack of silver and gold, the Maya took advantage of the areas many natural resources, including limestone (for construction), the volcanic rock obsidian (for tools and weapons) and salt. The environment also held other treasures for the Maya, including jade, quetzal feathers (used to decorate the elaborate costumes of Maya nobility) and marine shells, which were used as trumpets in ceremonies and warfare. Mysterious Decline of the Maya From the late eighth through the end of the ninth century, something unknown happened to shake the Maya civilization to its foundations. One by one, the Classic cities in the southern lowlands were abandoned, and by A.D. 900, Maya civilization in that region had collapsed. The reason for this mysterious decline is unknown, though scholars have developed several competing theories. Some believe that by the ninth century the Maya had exhausted the environment around them to the point that it could no longer sustain a very large population. Other Maya scholars argue that constant warfare among competing city-states led the complicated military, family (by marriage) and trade alliances between them to break down, along with the traditional system of dynastic power. As the stature of the holy lords diminished, their complex traditions of rituals and ceremonies dissolved into chaos. Finally, some catastrophic environmental change--like an extremely long, intense period of drought--may have wiped out the Classic Maya civilization. Drought would have hit cities like Tikal--where rainwater was necessary for drinking as well as for crop irrigation--especially hard. All three of these factors-overpopulation and overuse of the land, endemic warfare and drought--may have played a part in the downfall of the Maya in the southern lowlands. In the highlands of the Yucatan, a few Maya cities--such as Chichn Itz, Uxmal and Mayapn--continued to flourish in the Post-Classic Period (A.D. 9001500). By the time the Spanish invaders arrived, however, most Maya were living in agricultural villages, their great cities buried under a layer of rainforest green. [] author Benjamin Cook, a climate modeler at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, in a statement. [Dry and Dying: Images of Drought] Using climate-model simulations, he and his colleagues examined how much the switch from forest to crops, such as corn, would alter climate. Their results, detailed online in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, suggested that when deforestation was at its maximum, it could account for up to 60 percent of the drying. (The switch from trees to corn reduces the amount of water transferred from the soil to the atmosphere, which reduces rainfall.) Other recent research takes a more holistic view. "The ninth-century collapse and abandonment of the Central Maya Lowlands in the Yucatn peninsular region were the result of complex humanenvironment interactions," writes this team in a study published Monday (Aug 20) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The team, led by B.L. Turner, a social scientist at Arizona State University, concurs that by clearing the forest, the Mayans may have aggravated a natural drought, which spiked about the time the empire came to an end and population declined dramatically. But this is just one contributing factor to their demise, Turner and colleagues write, pointing out that the reconfiguration of the landscape may also have led to soil degradation. Other archaeological evidence points to a landscape under stress, for instance, the wood of the sapodilla tree, favored as construction beams, was no longer used at the Tikal and Calakmul sites beginning in A.D. 741. Larger mammals, such as white-tailed deer, appear to have declined at the end of empire. Social and economic dynamics also contributed. Trade routes shifted from land transit across the Yucatn Peninsula to sea-born ships. This change may have weakened the city states, which were contending with environmental changes. Faced with mounting challenges, the ruling elites, a very small portion of the population, were no longer capable of delivering what was expected of them, and conflict increased. "The old political and economic structure dominated by semidivine rulers decayed," the team writes. "Peasants, artisan craftsmen, and others apparently abandoned their homes and cities to find better economic opportunities elsewhere in the Maya area." []

What Was Behind Mysterious Collapse of the Mayan Empire?

The city states of the ancient Mayan empire flourished in southern Mexico and northern Central America for about six centuries. Then, around A.D. 900 Mayan civilization disintegrated. Two new studies examine the reasons for the collapse of the Mayan culture, finding the Mayans themselves contributed to the downfall of the empire. Scientists have found that drought played a key role, but the Mayans appear to have exacerbated the problem by cutting down the jungle canopy to make way for cities and crops, according to researchers who used climate-model simulations to see how much deforestation aggravated the drought. "We're not saying deforestation explains the entire drought, but it does explain a substantial portion of the overall drying that is thought to have occurred," said the study's lead

Robert Lamars: Theatre of the Mind

Theatre of the MIND presents a tremendous collection of truly fascinating, yet totally unrehearsed, performances by volunteer audience members under the guidance of Robert LAMAR. These volunteers become the stars of this expertly produced presentation that should not be confused with what many would consider traditional hypnosis. Throughout Theatre of the MIND, LAMAR invites his audience into a world where he encourages volunteers to enter a highly focused state of attention simply through applied suggestion. Perhaps, for the first time in their lives, participants let their hidden creative personalities leap to their full potential as LAMAR masterfully taps into their unexplored creativity. Volunteers may assume the persona of popular cultural icons like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Myley Cyrus or Justin Bieber. All of these pseudo stars may share the stage with another volunteer preoccupied with capturing a six foot grasshopper in one of many hilarious scenes. The performances of the audience volunteers are completely unrehearsed. In fact, as Theatre of the MIND unfolds, it is very difficult to believe the participants are simply audience members. Because of this, each performance of Theatre of the MIND is totally unique. Every show is a one of a kind experience. In addition, a technically clever combination of music, lighting and special effects combine to create a modern show that appeals to today's audiences. Theatre of the MIND is an original and a professional family show. Volunteers are not embarrassed or humiliated in any way, and all in attendance benefit from LAMAR's nearly three decades of study and experience in this specialized art. This is certainly one of Canada's most consistently acclaimed hypnotic attractions. Audiences are certain to be amazed whenever they enter Theatre of the MIND. ABOUT ROBERT LAMAR: Robert LAMAR has devoted much of his life to the study and understanding of magic, hypnosis, memory training and parapsychology. Born in the province of Ontario, Canada, he developed an interest in this specialized field at a very early age. When he was just six he started learning the art of magic through trick packages he ordered from magic catalogues. When he was only twelve he saw one of the world's truly great entertainers, The Impossiblist, Peter Reveen. This event captivated the young Robert and he was further drawn by the power to perform and entertain. He eventually met Reveen and the friendship they established has endured for many years. He has also spent many years studying the allied arts, specifically mesmerism, hypnotism and magic as a performance art. His studies led him to the conclusion that the field he wished to enter was not one of formal hypnotism but that of a highly focused state of attention through which he could tap into a person's natural creativity. This was the formative basis for developing Theatre of the MIND. Robert LAMAR, in addition to more than thirty years devoted to the study of his craft, is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (I.B.M.), a member of the Society of American Magicians and is also a member of the International Magic Society. The I.B.M. is the largest organization of its kind in the world. Membership is achieved only through sponsorship and Robert LAMAR's sponsor into the society was provided by his very good friend and mentor, Peter Reveen. Tens of thousands of Canadians have been amazed and entertained by Theatre of the MIND through live shows and appearances on both CTV and CBC television. This is the signature of the most consistently praised hypnotic attraction.

Invited To The Wedding: Is This A Blessed Photo?

By Rob McConnell In this day and age of photographic hoaxes and photographic manipulation, the displaying and sharing of digitally enhanced and digitally altered photographs are at an all-time high. I myself, have debunked well over 100 such hoaxed and fraudulent photographs both in still and movie format, and yet, a picture that was brought to me for analysis has left me scratching my head and asking the question, Is this the smoking gun that proves the existence of Jesus Christ? The photo, which appears with this article, which has been entrusted to REL-MAR, was taken at a wedding held in Ontario in August 2012. The wedding and reception was held in the backyard of a modest home just west of Hamilton in the community of Mount Hope. This is what is known about the photo: The image in the photograph was immediately noticed after the pictures were developed; The type of camera and film type and speed is not known; The photo was taken by the Mother of the Bride in their backyard during the wedding reception; The photographer of this photograph does not have a direct affiliation with any particular religious organization or religious philosophy; The photographer of this photo

is a down-to-earth, honest, hardworking, dedicated, responsible professional, in her early 50s and well respected in her community. The original photograph, of which there are no copies, has been analyzed by REL-MAR McConnell Media Companys Digital Media Services using several digital enhancinganalysis programs and there were no signs whatsoever of digital manipulation or altering in any manner. The photograph is simply one of those lifes mysteries that truly make us question what we believe to be real or a subliminal suggestion by another. However, the picture seems to speak to those who view it. The photographer believes that her photograph is a message to the newlyweds, that their union has been blessed by a visit from someone who did not receive a written invitation but an invitation from the heart. I am reminded of a Biblical passage, Matthew18:20, Where two or three have come together in my name, I am there among them." Some of the people that have seen this photo, of which you are now seeing publicly for the first time, with the permission of the owner, who wishes to remain anonymous to protect her identity and the privacy of her family, have reported seeing other figures in the photo, including: the Virgin Mary kissing the face of Jesus; the Jesus on the Cross; a blessing from Jesus.

Throughout history there have been visitations of religious figure including Our Lady of Fatima who reportedly appeared in apparitions to three shepherd children at Ftima, Portugal. These occurred on the 13th day of six consecutive months in 1917, starting on May 13. The three children were Lcia dos Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto. A 900-foot-tall Jesus Christ assured Oral Roberts his massive City of Faith project will be built, Roberts said in 1984, in a fund-raising letter recently brought to light by one of his detractors. Roberts said in his letter that on May 25th he spoke to Jesus who said "I told you that I would speak to your partners and, through them, I would build it!" Partners is the term Roberts applies to the donors who have given millions to raise the Tulsa hospital, the tallest building in the city. Other religious visitations and miracles have been reported around the world since the beginning of written history. After viewing the photograph, I would appreciate hearing from you with your observations and comments, by email to robmcconnell@rel-mar.com. In an time when people are seeing UFOs, Ghosts, Bigfoot and other visitations that are broadcast to the masses by the media, I for one find it very refreshing that there are still those simple, yet profound unknowns that give us hope that there will be a better tomorrow based on a promise made so very long ago. For The X Zone Radio/TV Show and The X Chronicles Newspaper, I am, Rob McConnell. []

The Yellowstone Series Born of fire, the untamed Yellowstone wilderness challenges the hearts and minds of all who journey there. First called Wonderland by the awestruck explorers of the nineteenth century, Yellowstone formed in volcanic violence and was sculpted by ice for over fifty million years. America's first national park served as the scene for Indian war, army occupation, and exploitation by the railroads. In 1988, the world watched on the nightly news as over half the park burned. Up to thirty thousand people fought the fires directly, and over a million visited the park during the burning. Each year, over three million people carry away memories that remain long after they return home to Houston, Osaka, or Frankfurt. Her love affair with the Yellowstone region began when she did Geology Field Camp near the park. Linda later returned to Wyoming to do field work for her master's thesis. Since, Linda has visited the park in every season, accessing the archives for the rich history of both the land, and man's brief tenure there. Now, go to one exceptional place, this land of unexpected violence and soothing peace. In each story, the spectacular setting serves as a major character. From the Industrial revolution and onward, the world has become an environment that is overflowing with dangerous toxins. Mass manufacturing has resulted in thousands of chemical pollutants being released in the atmosphere, water, and soil. As well, there has been a widespread increase of chemicals being added to almost every type of food and retail product. With this overwhelming chemical exposure, there has been an increase in research and studies showing the life threatening impacts on our health and well being. In her book, Our Chemical Lives And The Hijacking of Our DNA, author Catherine J Frompovich delves into the effects of a chemical laden world on the body at a cellular level.
ABOUT CATHERINE J FROMPOVICH: As a result of her lifelong interest in nature and the natural way, Catherine J. Frompovich matriculated in holistic modalities and natural nutrition. During her studies that led to advanced degrees in Nutrition and Holistic Health Sciences and a Certification in Orthomolecular Theory and Practice, she came to realize how important it is to follow the "owner's manual" that comes with the human body - Nature's intended way of life, living, and healthcare. She spent numerous years in practice as a consulting nutritionist. Realizing there virtually were no interactive books on nutrition, she wrote several for children and adults. Some still are offered and available on amazon.com as "collectors items." In the late 1970s and early 1980s, her books were used by teachers in elementary schools to teach nutrition, a subject - and lifestyle - that she feels truly is imperative in maintaining one's health from its prenatal stage and throughout life. At one point in her career during the 1980s, she had a cooking show on cable TV. Of course, it was devoted to the natural way of preparing food. For years she worked as a healthcare rights advocate to ensure that the "powers to be" would not have their way in destroying alternative healthcare and its modalities as "quackery." For five years, she was the editor of The Healthcare Rights Advocate, a 32 page quarterly newsletter centered on the politics of healthcare in the 1980s. In the 1990s she represented alternative healthcare interests on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. Writing always has been in her genes, so when Catherine's husband became ill, she worked from home as a freelance journalist. As such she wrote and produced two TV shows. One, Turn Off The Violence, was nominated for the 1996 Telly Award. Her work has been published in The Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine and other alternative healthcare journals, airline travel magazines, community newspapers, and national magazines.

UFOs In The News

Doomsday French mountain to be closed 'on day the world ends'
The Telegraph
A mountain in the French Pyrenees that doomsday cultists claim will be the only place still standing after the end of the world, slated December 21, is to be closed to visitors to avoid pandemonium on its peak. New Agers and UFO watchers will be barred access to the flat-top mount outside Bugarach, population 179, during a four-day period around the date they are convinced represents Armageddon. Harbingers of doom base their apocalyptic prediction on an ancient Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world will happen on the night of December 21, 2012. They believe the Pic de Bugarach is an "alien garage" and that extraterrestrials are quietly waiting in a massive cavity beneath the rock for the world to end, at which point they will leave, taking, it is hoped, a lucky few humans with them. To avoid a sudden, massive influx of esoteric outsiders, the mayor has banned gatherings of any sort, and anyone landing in a light aircraft will be arrested. But some from among the end-of-theworld crowd claim the real reason authorities are shutting down the area is that they are really there to investigate dozens of recent UFO sightings. Local police are also clamping down on those hoping to cash in on doomsday fever by selling end-of-the-world memorabilia at out of this world prices. Local press reports say one landowner is offering to rent out his four-bedroom house on the slopes of Bugarach for 1500 euros a night next month, or an empty field for those wishing to camp at 400 euros. "I possess a rare asset, the land of immortality," the owner is cited as claiming in La Depeche du Midi. Intergalactic hitchhikers can book a place in a bed and breakfast room 19km away on December 21 for the cut price of 500 euros, even though it is outside the "pick up zone". A local winemaker is even marketing an End of the World vintage and a Survival Vintage next year for those who make through to the other side. Eric Freysselinard, the prefect of the Aude department, or county, which comprises Bugarach, expressed outrage over the trade last week. "I find it really outrageous to abuse the naivety of people and rush into commerce that defies common sense," he said. With the clock ticking, a governmentbacked anti-cult watchdog is warning against a repeat of the 1995 mass suicides by the Order of the Solar Temple sect in the Alps when their predicted Doomsday failed to take place. French village which will 'survive 2012 Armageddon' plagued by visitors

The Telegraph
The mayor of a picturesque French village has threatened to call in the army to seal it off from a tide of New Age fanatics and UFO watchers, who are convinced it is the only place on Earth to be spared Armageddon in 2012. Bugarach, population 189, is a peaceful farming village in the Aude region, southwestern France and sits at the foot of the Pic de Bugarach, the highest mountain in the Corbires wine-growing area. But in the past few months, the quiet village has been inundated by groups of esoteric outsiders who believe the peak is an "alien garage". According to them, extraterrestrials are quietly waiting in a massive cavity beneath the rock for the world to end, at which point they will leave, taking, it is hoped, a lucky few humans with them. Most believe Armageddon will take place on December 21, 2012, the end date of the ancient Maya calendar, at which point they predict human civilisation will come to an end. Another favourite date mentioned is 12, December, 2012. They see Bugarach as one of perhaps several "sacred mountains" sheltered from the cataclysm. "This is no laughing matter," JeanPierre Delord, the mayor, told The Daily Telegraph. "If tomorrow 10,000 people turn up, as a village of 200 people we will not be able to cope. I have informed the regional authorities of our concerns and want the army to be at hand if necessary come December 2012." Mr Delord said people had been coming to the village for the past 10 years or so in search of alien life following a post in an UFO review by a local man, who has since died. "He claimed he had seen aliens and heard the humming of their spacecraft under the mountain," he said. The internet abounds with tales of the late President Franois Mitterrand being curiously heliported on to the peak, of mysterious digs conducted by the Nazis and

later Mossad, the Israeli secret services. A visit to Bugarach is said to have inspired Steven Spielberg in his film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind although the actual mountain he used is Devil's Tower in Wyoming. It is also where Jules Verne found the entrance and the inspiration for A Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Recently, however, interest in the site had skyrocketed, said the mayor, with online UFO websites, many in the US, advising people to seek shelter in Bugarach as the countdown to Armageddon commences. "Many come and pray on the mountainside. I've even seen one man doing some ritual totally nude up there," said Mr Delord. Sigrid Benard, who runs the Maison de la Nature guesthouse, said UFO tourists were taking over. "At first, my clientele was 72 per cent ramblers. Today, I have 68 per cent 'esoteric visitors'," he said. Several "Ufologists" have bought up properties in the small hamlet of Le Linas, in the mountain's shadow for "extortionate" prices, and locals have complained they are being priced out of the market. Strange sect-like courses are held for up to 800 a week. "For this price, you are introduced to a guru, made to go on a procession, offered a christening and other rubbish, all payable in cash," said Mr Delord. Valerie Austin, a retired Briton from Newcastle who settled in Bugarach 22 years ago who said the alien watchers were spoiling the village atmosphere. "You can't go for a peaceful walk anymore. It's a beautiful area, but now you find people chanting lying around meditating. Everybody has the right to their own beliefs, but the place no longer feels like ours." She said alien watchers planted strange objects on the mountainside. Recently she found a black virgin statuette cemented to the rock face. Although she described the alien claims as "total rubbish", she said there was nevertheless something special about the place. "It has a magnetic force in the scientific sense of the word. There is a special feeling here, but if I really believed the world were about to end, I'd have a whale of a time over the next two years" rather than look for salvation, she said. []

Number of UFO Sightings Across the US Decreases

Gather.com
The National UFO Alert Rating System was updated on December 1 with California, Florida, Michigan, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Arizona moving to an Unidentified Flying Object Alert 3 level. These states reported the most unidentified flying object sightings during the month of November 2012. California leads the list with 53 sightings reported in November, down from 83 sightings in October, 69 sightings in September, and 75 in August. States in the Alert 4 level with 13 or more sightings are Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, North Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado, and New York. The rest of the states moved to an Alert 5 level with lower numbers of flying craft activity. Watch states with ten or more sightings are Georgia, Washington, New Jersey, and Indiana. Even though there seems to be many flying object sightings reported each day, according to the Examiner, the entire country was moved back to the lowest level, an Alert 5. California has the most reported sightings with 53 cases; Florida, 37; Michigan, 37; Texas, 36; Pennsylvania, 30; Arizona, 25 cases. Alert 4 level states with 13 or more sightings are Ohio, 22; Missouri, 21; Illinois, 20; North Carolina, 16; Tennessee, 16; Colorado, 15; and New York, 14. Watch states with ten sightings or more are Georgia, 12; Washington, 12; New Jersey, 11; and Indiana with 10 cases. But what do these flying crafts reportedly look like? The sphere remains the most reported shape with 168 in November down from 161 in October. There were 117 sightings of flying objects that look like a circle; 100 reported the craft looking like a triangle; 83 sightings said it looked like a fireball; 82 reports were of a star shape; 71 as a disc, 67 reports couldn't explain what the object looked like; oval shapes, 58; cylinder shaped, 33; boomerang, 32; flash, 29; square or a rectangle, 22; cigar, 18; teardrop, 15; cone, 12; diamond, 12; bullet or a missile, 10; egg shaped, 9; blimp, 8; chevron, 8; Saturn like, 4; and 1 looked like a cross. Additionally, there were 22 landings, hovering, or takeoffs reported but no alien life forms were seen. Each day there are numerous reports of flying objects skirting about the skies yet the US was lowered to the lowest Alert level, a 5. Does this mean that aliens are no longer as interested in the planet as they once were or could it mean that less people are reporting their encounters because they're afraid that they won't be believed? Popular television programs like "Chasing UFOs" that follow experts on unidentified flying objects have also been ridiculed during the series. If experts are laughed at who would believe the average person who might have spotted an actual alien craft? Yet, even NASA has spoken about odd

flying objects floating around the space station, Mars, and another heading toward the sun. Maybe the people who are ridiculing others are using that as a shield because they're afraid that there just might be alien life studying the planet. Keep those eyes to the skies because something could be flying above. []

they have the mystery figured out. One guy says the object is an insect. Another says secret military drone being tested by the government. Everybody has an answer for what it is. But are any of them correct? []

Chinese UFO linked to rocket

Alan Boyle
Chinese skywatchers marveled this month over mysterious rays of light in the night sky, and now sharp-eyed analysts are saying those UFO sightings were sparked by a European Ariane 5 rocket that launched two telecommunication satellites from French Guiana. Amateur astronomers in China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces reported seeing the weird phenomenon on Nov. 11. They watched as a luminous object moved through the heavens, shimmering with rays or rings of light. The reports made a splash on Chinese news websites such as Sina.com, as well as the Astronomy.com.cn discussion forum. "It is certainly a UFO," one forum poster wrote in Chinese. Another wrote that the UFO was a "blessing from another planet." (I couldn't determine how that comment was meant, because my machine-translation software doesn't have a sarcasm filter.) For a while, Chinese experts speculated that the object might have been a comet but skywatchers soon figured out that the sightings occurred less than an hour after Arianespace sent the Eutelsat 21B and Star One C3 satellites into orbit (from the European Space Agency's South American spaceport, where it was still Nov. 10). "The detailed analysis of the height of the UFO and the timing of observation leads me to conclude that this was the ESC-A upper stage, 30 minutes after all the fuel leaked out via passification," a Hong Kong observer known as Galactic Penguin SST reported last week on the NASASpaceflight.com forum. Today, Want China Times said that the Beijing UFO Research Society has reached a similar conclusion. "The 'rays' were most likely the rocket jettisoning boosters or other parts and entering low Earth orbit after being launched 30 minutes previously," the Taiwan-based online publication reported. It's also possible that the swirls of light came from fuel or vapor emanating from the upper stage. Such explanations are consistent with a host of other rocket-related UFO sightings over the years, including Russian rocket stages that have been spotted over the Middle East and Scandinavia. []

THAT DENVER UFO Flying insects? Secret military drone?

The Valley Chronicle
(MONROE, WA) -- Okay so whats the deal with this thing that supposedly is flying around the skies in Denver so fast that you cant see it with the naked eye but you can see it on a video tape that has been slowed down to a frame-byframe speed? An aviation expert says its not a plane or a helicopter. Denver TV station KDVR did a story on it not long back and the news staff found out what all newsies learn eventually and that is that you can report all manner of serious, somber important stories with the best elbow grease journalistic flourishes available, and not blow the doors off in terns of viewer interest like one simple UFO story. Fair disclosure: almost every news operation including this one publishes one of these eye candy pieces every so often because quite frankly it juices our readership numbers like crazy. We could break a new Watergate quality political scandal after six months of grueling work, sweat, tears and hours and hours of reporters getting paid time and a half and paying for outside research help...and not get the numbers jumps we get from one of these UFO from outer space pieces. People come out of the woodwork to read this stuff. Dont ask us why as we have not a clue but it happens all the time, every time and we just have to thank the big guy above for small favors now and then. Call us shallow if you will but were just like Sixty Minutes and the ABC Evening News aint above juicing the old numbers now and then. Squeeze-squeeze, Juice-juice. Thats us. So the update on the Denver UFO piece is that the reporter who did the first story has been inundated by people calling and emailing them from all around the world telling them

NASA Downplays Rumors on Mars

NASA downplays rumors of major Mars rover discovery
NASA's Curiosity Mars rover has sparked the curiosity of the media and the blogosphere, with widespread speculation as to whether one of its laboratory instruments has made a major discovery in the quest to find out if the red planet ever hosted a habitable environment. NASA officials, however, are downplaying the speculation, saying the results, expected to be presented Monday at the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting in San Francisco, are scientifically interesting, but not in and of themselves "earthshaking." "The rumors about what the results are from the SAM instrument on Curiosity are quite overblown," Guy Webster, a spokesman for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., told CBS News Wednesday. "There's nothing earthshaking. The news conference next week will be one in a series trying to keep people up to date about the rover's progress and findings." For his part, John Grotzinger, the Mars Science Laboratory's project scientist, won't talk about whatever the rover has discovered, telling reporters the science team wants to make sure the data are fully understood and that no mistakes are made interpreting the results. That's not unusual, researchers say, and reflects sound scientific practice. But when it comes to speculation about life on Mars, rumors can be hard to avoid, especially when the data are from an instrument designed to look for the carbon compounds essential to life as it is known on Earth. The instrument package in question is known as SAM, which stands for Surface Analysis at Mars. The compact laboratory, about the size of a microwave oven, uses a mass spectrometer, a tunable laser spectrometer and a gas chromatograph to look for organic compounds in samples of the red planet's soil and atmosphere. Two small ovens are used to heat samples to some 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. The mass spectrometer can detect nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, oxygen, hydrogen and carbon and other elements. The tunable laser spectrometer measures concentrations of methane, carbon dioxide and water vapor, along with various isotopes. The gas chromatograph identifies organic compounds using a different technique. SAM's first soil sample, collected from a sand dune in an area near Curiosity's landing site known as Glenelg, was processed about two weeks ago. At that time, deputy project scientist Ashwin Vasavada said the SAM team decided to repeat the sample run based on a quick-look assessment. "Based on a very brief look at that data, the team decided to run a couple of more SAM experiments, which are customized to this particular soil and we're currently in the midst of getting those results back," Vasavada said. Reporters assumed the team found the initial data suspect for some reason. But no one asked any follow-up questions about the additional sample analysis. Curiosity landed in Gale Crater on Aug. 6 to kick off a planned two-year mission. The

initial months of the mission have been devoted to checking out and calibrating its scientific instruments before the rover makes its way to its ultimate target, the base of a central 3-mile-high mound of layered terrain known as Mount Sharp. For the past several weeks, Curiosity has been working at the Glenelg site where orbital photographs show three types of rock and soil coming together. Most recently, the rover's robot arm has been put through its paces scooping up sandy soil samples from low dunes and depositing them into a pair of on-board mini laboratories, SAM and another known as CheMin, for Chemistry and Mineralogy. The rover recently moved to a new area, known as Point Lake, while the team looks for suitable rocks to serve as test subjects for a powerful drill mounted on Curiosity's robot arm. The drill, intended to provide pristine samples from the interior of targeted rocks, is the final major component of the science package to be tested. The nuclear-powered rover was not designed to look for signs of past or present life. Rather, its instruments were built to look for the chemical traces of past or present habitability. SAM plays a central role in that quest as it looks for organic compounds that are essential to life as it is known on Earth. As such, rumors about a significant discovery in the SAM data triggered widespread interest, prompted in part by a National Public Radio story last week that raised the possibility of an "earthshaking" result. Since then, project officials at JPL have been bombarded with media queries. Webster says the results Monday will be "interesting" and "not insignificant." But he warns they likely will not live up to uninformed speculation. []

Bigfoot DNA Discovered? Study Claims To Have Proven Sasquatchs Existence

Bigfoot's DNA has apparently been discovered, according to a press release from DNA Diagnostics. The organization claims that a five-year study has determined that a Sasquatch does in

fact exist and is in fact a hybrid of Homo Sapiens (humans) and primates. "Sasquatch nuclear DNA is incredibly novel and not at all what we had expected," said Dr. Melba S. Ketchum, leader of the study, in the press release. "While it has human nuclear DNA within its genome, there are also distinctly non-human, non-archaic hominin, and non-ape sequences. We describe it as a mosaic of human and novel non-human sequence. Further study is needed and is ongoing to better characterize and understand Sasquatch nuclear DNA." It sounds exciting, but just how legit are Ketchum's claims? According to several reports, the idea that Bigfoot's DNA has been discovered is dubious, at best. As Benjamin Radford, the deputy editor of Skeptical Inquirer, notes, this study has not yet appeared in any peer-reviewed journal. He also notes that it is doubtful that Bigfoot's mitochondrial DNA is identical to human's as Ketchum's study claims. The only way this would be possible, Radford says, is if Sasquatches reproduced with women over 15,000 years ago (when this Bigfoot supposedly existed), or, the samples were contaminated. While Ketchum believes the former scenario, Radford (and isciencetimes) thinks the latter is more likely. There are plenty of other issues with this supposed Bigfoot DNA discovery, as the Houston Chronicle points out. First of all, nowhere in the press release does anyone from DNA Diagnostics state where this supposed Bigfoot DNA came from. You would think that would be a major part of the story that the scientists would want to tell. Also, the Chronicle story notes that the scientists in question announced their findings before they had been published or even vetted by others. This is rarely done in the scientific community, according to the article. Finally, DNA Diagnostics has been given an "F" grade by the Better Business Bureau, and over two dozen people have complained about its services. It's fun to think about the idea that Bigfoot's DNA has been discovered. But, unfortunately, this story is about as difficult to believe as all the other previous Sasquatch sightings. []
